This summer season at Cadogan Hall you can look forward to a range of events for everyone – from the one and only Ukulele Orchestra to a fabulous semi-staged performance of Puccini’s Tosca, through Grammy-award winning US country music artist, Delbert McClinton, the London Community Gospel Choir and jazz divas Jacqui Dankworth and Clare Teal – we challenge you not to find your perfect performance inside!

ClassicalAmong the highlights of the season is the last in this year’s Zurich series – we are visited by the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra in May. Tickets for the next Zurich series will be available from 1 June (see page 33). The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have a great season coming up including two concerts with a focus on the composer George Gershwin – 24 May and 30 September. The BBC Proms returns to Cadogan Hall for another season of Monday Chamber Music Proms and Saturday Matinees – all details can be found on pages 24 to 29.

London Concert Choir will be performing My Fair Lady in June, Barts Choir will sing Mozart’s Great Mass and for opera fans there is Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Puccini’s Tosca on offer.

ContemporaryThe focus this season is on country and blues music with several American artists making their way to Cadogan Hall beginning with Shelby Lynne on 6 May then Leon Russell, Delbert McClinton, and the Robert Cray Band. A highlight of the summer will be our very own Cadogan Swing Orchestra, performing three feel-good concerts in August with some very talented jazz vocalists – turn to page 31 for all the details.

Out to LunchFrom 21 June through to September Cadogan Hall will come alive on Tuesday and Thursday lunch times with our series of free foyer music and events called Out to Lunch. This year will be more eclectic than ever with a variety of musical genres, talks, workshops and activities. Check our website and posters to find out which artists and ensembles will be performing or just turn up and enjoy a sandwich with us!

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, using instruments bought with loose change, which believes that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the ukulele.

A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the ‘bonsai guitar’ and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies. There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery. Only an astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and singing (and a bit of whistling). Audiences have a good time with the Ukulele Orchestra.

Alternative country songstress, Shelby Lynne, comes to the UK to perform her inspired music spanning the depths of six albums.

The Grammy award winning ‘singer-song writer come actress’ promises to bring a blend of songs from her independence gaining record Tears, Lies and Alibis as well as her Dusty Springfield inspired album Just A Little Lovin. Shelby, who has also appeared as Johnny Cash’s mother in the film Walk the Line, has had her music featured on blockbuster films such as Bridget Jones’s Diary. Not one to be missed!

Nils Lofgren, legendary American songwriter, virtuoso guitarist and pianist, returns to tour the UK. The Shanbehzadeh’s Ensemble offers unique hypnotic dances and traditional music from the Persian Gulf. Saeid is a Neyanban and Neyjofti virtuoso and also an amazing dancer. He is often invited to participate in concerts with recognized artists such as Billy Cobham.

In 2001 he collaborated with the French Montalvo / Hervieu Company, creating and touring with the ‘Babelle Heureuse’ show, which was performed more than 200 times in France, Europe and Brazil.

Founded in 1990, this Ensemble, directed by Saeid Shanbehzadeh, has delighted audiences in Iran, Europe and North America with the hypnotic rhythms and melodies of this amazing music.

schumann Fantasy Pieces, Op. 73 shostakoVich Sonata for cello and piano in D minor, Op. 40 The exciting Russian cellist Boris Andrianov will be giving a rare London recital together with legendary pianist Eleonora Bekova pairing two highlights of romantic music by Rachmaninov and Schumann with two of the pinnacles of 20th century cello composition by Schnittke and Shostakovich. Rachmaninov’s Romances are better known as songs for voice but take on a sublime beauty when performed by cello whilst the Fantasy Pieces are amongst the most loved of all Schumann’s writing. Many 19th-century musicians either supported Wagner’s innovations, or favoured the more traditional Brahms, but tonight we can simply bask in the brilliance of both. The Prelude to Act 1 of Lohengrin is an exquisite example of Wagner’s shimmering, spine-tingling orchestration and slowly unfolding harmonies, reaching heights of sublime beauty. Brahms’s Violin Concerto is another treat, with a particularly delectable slow movement. Belgian composer Franck combined French ‘cyclic’ form, in which certain phrases recur through-out, with a more Germanic style – like Wagner, Franck revelled in lush orchestral sounds.

Greek-born, Paris-based Georges Aperghis is intimately involved with French musical theatre but his new piece takes its title from cinematic techniques of cutting and continuity. Sir Harrison Birtwistle refl ects on more ancient traditions in Angel Fighter, a pocket oratorio for voices and ensemble in the tradition of his previous examinations of pivotal myths that resonate down the ages. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s Il rozzo martello, a contemplation on a sonnet by Michelangelo, was composed for the BBC Singers in 1997.

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, one of Britain’s most respected and versatile musicians, turned 75 this year and the fi rst of this season’s contemporary music matinees pays tribute to his distinctive creative voice and its French connections. His sensuous, Debussy-inspired Dream Dancing was written for the London Sinfonietta in the mid-1980s. Dutilleux is one of the living composers he most admires, while Elizabeth Maconchy, impulsively contacted when he was still a schoolboy, would later become a friend. Her Romanza is quietly tough-minded, though not too tough to disturb its prevailing mood of gentle soulfulness. Starting life as a BBC commission for an extended jazz composition, Jazz Calendar was developed into a Frederick Ashton ballet, starrily cast and with designs by the young Derek Jarman.

The Piano Variations, composed while Britten was still a student, looks forward to his celebrated Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, that masterpiece for string orchestra to be performed on Sunday 21 August at the Royal Albert Hall. Today’s concert begins with a striking composition from the young Britten in which the oboist is Nicholas Daniel, past winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Bridge’s Piano Quintet comes from relatively early in his own career, before the events of the First World War cast a dark shadow on his creative outlook.

Christophe Rousset’s supremely elegant ensemble, which has been breathing new life into the rich legacy of the French Baroque for more than 20 years, presents a programme squarely in the Gallic tradition but with infl uences from across the Alps. The programme includes a selection from Couperin’s colourful Les nations and Rameau’s delicately poised Pièces en concerts. Less familiar may be the eloquent cantata by Michel Pignolet de Montéclair, an important musical fi gure in the period between Lully and Rameau, who counted Couperin’s daughters among his pupils. The story of Lucretia and her suicide is taken up by a young soprano who has been making quite a name for herself since abandoning a career in medicine for the healing balm of music.

This concert explores material sung, inspired or composed by women and pays tribute to the music of Hildegard of Bingen ending with four new songs based on her texts. ‘For Hildegard, it seems music was a way for mortals to experience something of heavenly or spiritual ecstasy,’ says Stevie Wishart, ‘and it is perhaps this desire which we can most clearly empathise with today.’ As a centrepiece, two British settings of medieval texts express visionary fervour through the sound-worlds of the second half of the 20th century.

Gershwin was a true original, his unique sound blending classical finesse with the freedom of jazz. This programme features Gershwin’s masterpiece for piano and orchestra, Rhapsody in Blue, as well as his witty, evocative portrait of An American in Paris. Gershwin’s last concert piece, the fascinating Variations on I Got Rhythm of 1934, was dedicated to his brother and lyricist, Ira. The Gershwins’ song is showcased in an array of styles, including Oriental and even atonal. The jaunty Three Preludes are bursting with the vitality of jazz and blues, while the Lullaby is one of Gershwin’s gentlest works, full of graceful charm.

Impressionist Alistair McGowan and musical actress Charlotte Page, bring the songs poems and prose of Noël Coward to life in Sincerely Noël. Directed by Brendan O’Hea and ably accompanied by George Dyer on the piano, the show opens with impersonations from McGowan, then moves swiftly into the flow of the evening with the pair splitting lines of dialogue and songs between them. Together they whirl through insights into the lives of both everyday people and the upper classes with many tales of the endless capacity of love to confuse, wound, amuse and capture hearts and minds alike. With new musical arrangements by Warren Wills, the pair present songs including Mad About The Boy, Never Again and Alice Is At It Again as well as dramatised poems such as Honeymoon 1905.

Wheelchair usersIf you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

The GalleryPlease note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time.

Customers with hearing requirementsThe Box Office counter is fitted with a loop system to aid customers with any hearing impairment. The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. First opened in 1907 as a New Christian Science Church designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm, the hall hosted congregations of 1600 in its heyday, however, like most other churches there was a decline in attendances. In the 1980s there was a congregation of barely 150. By 1996 the congregation was no longer able to cope and sold the building, which then fell into disuse.

Cadogan Estate purchased the hall in 2000 to safeguard its future. Through their connection with Opera Holland Park, Cadogan discovered that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was looking for a permanent base in London. Cadogan Hall was an excellent opportunity for the orchestra to benefit from Cadogan’s aim to bring the former church back into useful life in a manner befitting its character and civic presence.

On one level the conversion of this large relatively modern listed building into a performance space seems straightforward. After all, there was a ready-made auditorium with a raked floor, a stage, a proscenium and a gallery. Unfortunately modern expectations of comfort and facilities let alone the requirements of building and licensing regulations meant extensive and fundamental changes had to be made.

The acoustics of the building were a big issue both in terms of environmental acoustics – the control of sound break-out from the building – and performance acoustics within the auditorium. The ceiling and the roof had to be re-detailed to provide acoustic insulation. Tuned resonator tubes were installed on the main ceiling and the walls under the gallery and the undersides of the tip-up seats in the stalls also have a pattern of absorption holes to retain the hall’s acoustic character.

The new performance lighting and sound systems in the auditorium include the computer controlled theatrical lights on the ceiling. These provide lighting for rehearsals but really come into their own when they are programmed to rotate, change light beam colours and patterns and provide other special effects for performances. A large screen for films and visual presentations can be lowered and allows performances elsewhere to be relayed live by satellite or the internet.

The organ installed in 1911 was carefully dismantled and put into store to await re-installation in its new home in a church in the Midlands. The organ casing, an integral part of the character of the Auditorium along with timber panelling and balustrading from the platform, was also put into store. When the organ screen was re-assembled and nearly a century of dirt was removed it was found that each of the column capitals and each of the carvings around the arching balustrade are unique – a surprise discovery that added to the richness of the building.

Despite the scale of the auditorium the combined effects of the stage, the steeply raked stalls and the low gallery create a surprisingly intimate venue where the audience experiences a very real feeling of being part of the performance.

The stained glass was designed by a Danish nobleman. Baron Arild Rosenkrantz, had learnt the art of stained glass whilst working with Tiffany in New York. The designs for Cadogan Hall were said to exhibit “artistic simplicity of patterning and to provide efficiency of lighting and economy consistent with dignity”. There are no allegorical images and only one window has text. All the windows were removed and taken by a specialist to workshops for painstaking restoration. Although the Celtic knot motifs are simple and the use of colour restrained, the dramatic effect of the restored glass was another pleasant surprise during the refurbishment process.
