Service

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to be present at the 100th birthday ofone of our Chapter Members—our most senior member! The closestcontender for that esteemed position is a young 93 year old WWII sailor— Compatriot William Malicote!

Compatriot Jim Halls was born in 1920—right at the end of the “War toend all Wars”, the end of the “Spanish Flu Pandemic” and right at thebeginning of the “Roaring 20’s”.  Jim’s teenage years were during the"Great Depression" and in the late 30’s and early 40’s while the worldwas preparing for yet another Great War, he became an adult.

World War Two required his service and Jim became an officer in theUS Army and after seemingly endless training, in July of 1944 he landedon Utah Beach in Normandy, France.  About a month later Jim wasevacuated to France with wounds that would end his military servicecareer—but did it?

Jim recovered from his wounds, was married and became a father.  He had a terrific career and becameinvolved with his family and community.  His character and personality along with his proven gift ofleadership made him visible to many and an inspiration to all he meets.

Yesterday, as he enjoyed the accolades and celebrity of being the most senior man in the room, all of his lifewas visible in the faces of his family, friends and compatriots.  Jim has lived a life of Service and Grace thatcontinues into his 101st year!

When one see’s a trait in someone else that they admire, they frequently “wish” it for themselves—at least Ido!  So, standing here at the beginning of the "Roaring 20's Redux", I wonder—with only 30 years to gobefore I catch up with Jim—will I still have a desire to be of Service to others?

Will You?

We were all Blessed to be with Jim on this special day!

Happy Birthday Lt. Halls

When it opened the 340-room hotel located on this site was consideredone of the finest hotels in the world. Abraham Lincoln stayed here onSeptember 17-18, 1859, while campaigning for the Ohio RepublicanParty. Lincoln also stayed at this hotel on February 12, 1861, during hisinaugural journey to Washington, D.C. to be sworn in as the 16thpresident. His speech from the hotel balcony expressed his desire toabide by the Constitution on the issue of slavery. After the Battle ofShiloh (Pittsburgh Landing) in April 1862, the hotel served as a hospitalfor wounded troops nursed by the Cincinnati Sisters of Charity. OnMarch 20th, 1864, Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William TecumsehSherman met in "Parlor A" to coordinate their campaigns againstRichmond, Virginia and Atlanta, Georgia, eventually leading to Federalvictory in the American Civil War. After the American Civil War,"Parlor A" was used by local veterans for the Grand Army of theRepublic meetings. The register of the hotel bears the names of HenryClay, Daniel Webster, James Buchanan, Stephen A. Douglas, Salmon P.Chase, and Horace Greeley. The hotel stopped operations on July 15th,1926.

Chaplain’s Corner

First, God uses common people.  God never looks at anyone and says, “They are just so cool, winsome andspecial — I’ve got to be their friend.”  The Bible reveals that God uses lots of people whose debit side of the pageexceeds the credit side … “For consider your calling brother: not many of you were wise, according to worldlystandards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth, but God chose foolish people, i.e. ordinarypeople, to confound the wise, and He chooses the weak people of the world to confound the mighty.”  Check outthe story of Gideon in Judges 6.  He lacked self-confidence; he was a coward and an idolater, in other words justan ordinary guy; yet God used him.  He really didn’t bring anything to the table, but he did surrender to the call.

Secondly, God uses cleansed people.  James says, “We all sin in many different ways, but there is forgivenesswith God.”  The problem with many believers however, is that they will not forgive themselves.   Put away yourown self atonement kit; shake off that self-deprecating spirit.  If God forgives you and you won’t forgive yourselfthen your standards are higher than that of Christ, and you’re basically saying that the all-sufficient and perfectsacrifice of Christ for sin isn’t sufficient for you!  There is forgiveness with God, and that’s the only forgivenessthat counts.  “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from allunrighteousness.”  Stop remembering what God has forgotten!  Once sin is confessed, He removes it as far as theEast is from the West, and He remembers it no more. When God forgives our sin, He gives Himself a case ofamnesia and He has long forgotten that which may be tormenting you because He forgave the sin you committed.

Thirdly, God uses courageous people.  Being courageous is not the same thing as being hot headed.  Beingcourageous is not the same thing as being hot headed.  Biblical courage is just trusting God’s directives.  Abrahamwas courageous because when God called him in Ur of the Chaldees, he journeyed a thousand miles throughhostile territories in order to be obedient to the Heavenly vision.  The Genesis record says, “He went out notknowing where he was going.” If you’re willing to do what God says then you qualify, because that’s courage.

Fourthly, God also uses cautious people.  People who have courage that is not tempered by wisdom arereckless!  When God whittled down Gideon’s army to 300 men, Gideon was told to watch how the men woulddrink.  Some knelt down putting their mouth to the water lapping like a dog with their neck exposed.  Others kneltdown while looking up at the hills where the enemy was, and they cupped water in their hands and brought it totheir mouth!  Those were the warrior types that were to be selected.  They were courageous yet cautious and actingin wisdom.

Fifthly, God uses confident people.  Confidence is born of worship and from living in God’s Word.  A well-known Chinese evangelist, Leland Wong, put three sentences on the stationary he used for correspondence: “Thesun stood still.” (Joshua 10:13) … “The iron did swim.” (II Kings 6:6) and, “This God is our God.” (Psalm48:14) The juxtaposition of those verses revealed that Wong had confidence that God could do the impossible. We don’t just get up and say, ‘Starting today I’m going to be confident in God!’  But rather slowly as we mature inour relationship with Christ, we begin to realize that He is indeed trustworthy and faithful.  Can we talk?  Is yoursa lackluster Christian life?  Then say to the Father, “Here am I send me!”  Tell the Lord that you want to be usedby Him.  It’ll mess up your whole schedule and you’ll never be the worse for it.  True spirituality is nothing lessthan availability.  Stop demurring and start surrendering.  God uses common people, cleansed people, courageouspeople, cautious people, and confident people.  I’m pretty sure you meet those prerequisites.

Get your boots on solider; God wants to put you into the fray and use you mightily.

You think about that! Amen.

QUIT BELIEVING THE DEVIL’S LIEWho said you’re not good enough, anointed enough, or spiritual enough to beused by God?  Stop thinking you’re just a lowly grunt in the Kingdom.  Here’sthe kind of person God will use.

A conflict between George Washington and Thomas

Jefferson? Most Americans are unaware of this

historical reality. History tends to cast the early years of

America in a glow of camaraderie, but there were many

conflicts between the Founding Fathers-and none more

important than the clash between Washington and

Jefferson. In  The Great Divide, acclaimed historian

Thomas Fleming examines how the differing

temperaments and leadership styles of Washington and

Jefferson shaped two opposing views of the presidency

and the nation, and how this rift profoundly influenced

the next two centuries of America's history and

resonates to the present day.
