Where do volcanoes occur?

Volcanoes often occur when tectonic plates rub together and shoot hot magma from the mantle to the lava dome. They also occur in volcanic hot spots like the Hawaiian islands, Yellowstone and Anchorage, Alaska.

How Often Does A Volcano Blow?

All Volcanos are different, sometimes a volcano will erupt and will sleep for 800 years. But scientists can tell when a volcano will erupt by studying the movement of tectonic plates. A volcano can erupt in any season, it can be hot or cold.

What Earth Features are Involved With Volcanos?

A volcano can form anywhere even underwater. They form when tectonic plates rub and magma comes up from the mantle and hardens creating the volcano. And over time a mountain forms (the volcano) with a Lava dome that holds the lava.

What Usually Happens When A Volcano Blows?

Volcanos usually spit out a cloud of ash and gas that soars into the atmosphere. Then they shot pumice rock out which is hot rocks. By then the ash and gas will start falling and fall down to land. The last step of a volcano blow is the magma and lava. Some volcanos don’t spit out lava they just spit out ash and gas.

The Most Extreme Volcano

The most extreme volcano is the one under Yellowstone the people are living on a time bomb. If that volcano blows almost all of the people that live close will die or be injured.

How do you rate a volcano?

Scientists use VIE scale to measure volcanic eruptions. The VIE scale measures volcanos by if they are explosive or non explosive and how big the explosion was and how much damaged it caused. If a volcano erupted and killed 100 people and destroyed a whole city it would probably be a 6 or 7. A number 8 explosion has never happened.

0 not rated Non explosive 1 >0.0001 gentle 2 >0.001 explosive 3 >0.01 severe 4 >0.10 5 >1 convulsive 6 >10 colossal 7 >100 super colossal 8 >1,000 mega colossal

Aftermath of a Volcano

The aftermath of a volcano can be horrible. The most common aftermath is loss of plants and trees. The seconded is building destruction and the third is loss of humans. Today people usually get warnings to evacuate so the loss of people has gone down a lot.

Key Terms

Pumice Rock: is flaming hot rocks that could burn your skin away.Tectonic Plates: are the plates of rock under us that move and shift creating and destroying our world.Lava Dome: is a dome where lava and magma is stored until an eruption.Lava Tube: is an underground tunnel that use to hold lava but has dried and become a small cave.

Fun Facts

The longest a volcano has slept is 4,000 years.

Mt. Saint Helens destroyed 231 square feet of forest. The ancient Hawaiians buried the dead in lava tubes.Magma comes from the Greek word dough.During volcanic eruptions lighting storms are common.
