June is Women in Business Month at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, with most of this month’s Chamber events focused on promoting, as well as educating, women in business. Preparation for these seminars, webinars, workshops and panels, breakfasts and mixers lead to an investigation of the changing role of women in the workforce over the last few decades.

According to a 2011 report ordered by the White House Council on Women and Girls, the percentage of women that are working or looking for work rose from 33% to 61% between 1950 and 1999. In recent years, that percentage has stayed about the same. Furthermore, the report showed that while women are still less active in the labor force than men, in 2009, 51% of positions in professional, management and related occupations were held by women. However, the majority of female employees tend to work in traditionally female fields. With these numbers in mind, we asked a few Orange County businesswomen about their experiences, the changes that are taking place, and the work that remains to be done.

My friend and colleague, Glenn Shepard, is a firm believer in the fact that hard work pays off. He has developed a set of “Rules of Work,” which I’m so impressed with, I’m sharing them here:

GLENN SHEPARD’S RuLES OF WORk

1. Work’s tough. That’s why you get paid for it.

2. Raises are earned, not given.

3. Leave your home life at home.

4. If you’d wear it to the state fair, don’t wear it to work.

5. If you wouldn’t say it to people’s faces, don’t say it behind their backs.

6. Do not read your text messages while a customer is talking to you.

7. If you can’t be on time, be early.

8. Solve your own problems.

9. Finish what you started.

10. Be low-maintenance.

Local Farm Receives Storm Recovery GrantIn June 2013, New York State established the Office of Storm Recovery to centralize recovery and rebuilding efforts in areas of New York State that were impacted by Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee and Superstorm Sandy. Operating under the Office of New York Rising, the Small Business Recovery Program offers two types of assistance: small business grants and small business loans.

Chris and Eve Pawelski, owners of the fourth-generation Pawelski Farms in Goshen, experienced significant losses as a result of Irene and Lee. They contacted Vanessa Primus, Storm Recovery Regional Coordinator for the Mid-Hudson, who operates out of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce Business Center in Montgomery. Primus is also a Certified Business Advisor and Procurement Specialist for the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

As the black dirt growing season begins, the Pawelskis are back on track, armed with a grant from the Office of Storm Recovery. “This money will make a significant difference for us,” said Chris Pawelski. “The help we received from Vanessa in guiding us through the grant application process was tremendous,” he added. “There’s no way we could have done this without her and the SBDC.” Information on how to obtain help from the Office of Storm Recovery is available from Primus at 845-457-9700 or 845-339-0025, ext. 13 (Mid-Hudson SBDC).

I worked as a job coach for an agency for three years. During the third year, two fellow job coaches and I decided to start our own company. We wanted the freedom to implement our own methods and ideas. We work with high school students with special needs. We mentor and coach them at local job sites such as Planet Fitness, Pay Half, C.W. Price and Shoprite.

I did the preliminary steps of forming our company, Students to Work, LLC, through the Nolo web site. We then made an appointment to see Edison Guzman of SCORE to see what other steps we needed to take. He told us about EAP and that a small business class was starting in three days. I signed up and attended the 10-week class. The information was very valuable and the class was well-organized and coordinated by the energetic teacher, Cynthia Marsh-Croll. I would highly recommend EAP to anyone starting or building a small business.

Our company was able to secure a contract with the Beacon City School District for the 2012-2013 school year and renewed for the 2013-2014 school year. We are in the process of proposing a contract with increased services for 2014-2015. We tried contacting another district last year and three more districts this year, but have not secured additional contracts yet. Changes in state educational mandates for school districts have made our services very appealing so we foresee a bright future.

Students to Work, LLC was formed by three retired teachers, each with more than 30 years of experience. We went into this venture knowing we were almost assured of getting the original contract. I won’t feel we are a real success until we are able to expand into more districts, but we are having a great time working with kids and making a difference in their lives.

My secondary reason for taking the small business class was that my wife was retiring from teaching Art in the Newburgh School District. Her lifelong dream was to own her own business where she could teach classes, exhibit artists’ works and sell art and artisan wares. My business was a lemonade stand compared to what she proposed, so I knew I needed to get help if I was going to help her. She opened Artology, LLC in New Windsor in November 2013 and the business is growing each day. The information I got from EAP has made a big difference for both of our companies.

With a mission of “empowering women and eliminating racism,” the YWCA Orange County has decades of experience helping women and their families – they’ve been doing it since 1888. But venturing into the for-profit business world to meet its mission from a different angle was brand new territory. “When the Board of Directors and I first discussed buying a franchise, I don’t think any of us really believed we would do it,” said Christine Sadowski, Executive Director of the YWCA Orange County. “But, we’re fortunate to have a Board that is focused on long range goals and doesn’t shy away from challenge. When the franchise consultant we hired told us we’d be ‘defying all odds if we were successful’ the room was extremely quiet; then one of our Board members responded, ‘someone has to be the first!’ and we made the decision to buy that night!”

FISH Window Cleaning at the YWCA will increase the number of local women working in non-traditional jobs by providing them opportunities to work in the window cleaning business, an industry to which they may not otherwise have access. Making resources, information and access to non-traditional fields available to women is a key part of the YWCA’s work of reducing the gender wage gap. The on-site job training will help women enhance their income potential and improve their overall quality of life for themselves and their family.

FISH Window Cleaning at the YWCA is designed with a long-term vision. Short-term education without case management or follow-up has been proven to be unsuccessful, so support and resources for workers need to be accessible throughout the work development experience. Statistically, households headed by single mothers are the poorest. While this statistic is the result of many factors, one of the most significant is that access to jobs is often based on gender.

For many women who choose not to attend college or who cannot afford higher education, the traditional job route takes them to women-occupied jobs (e.g., childcare, home health care aide) paying minimum wage. Men who do not attend college, however, most often opt for traditionally male-dominated skilled labor jobs with starting pay as high as $20-$30 an hour. By helping women gain the skills to compete in these higher paying fields through their training with FISH Window Cleaning, the YWCA aims to help them enhance their long-term income potential.

Chamber Celebrates

“I see a rise in females as part of pitch teams, which in the past were generally male-dominant,” said Kelley Briggs, founder and owner of DesignWorks NY, LLC, a marketing and design firm serving the area. “To me, that is

a positive signal that the industry acknowledges that females bring unique experiences, communication skills and multi-tasking talent to the table that are valuable assets to both business development and business operations.”

“There’s been a significant growth in the number of women-owned businesses in recent years,” said Niki Jones, founder and CEO of Niki Jones Agency, a integrated marketing agency. “I got my start during a time when the industry was considered to be a man’s marketplace and had to work very hard to assert myself in the industry.”

Charlene Finerty, founder and owner of Plans and Profits, LLC, also reflects on her entrepreneurial start.

“Decades ago, only boys were allowed to take mechanical drawing in high school,” she said, looking back on her education and the paths then available to women. “My high school guidance teacher said my aptitude test did not work because my mechanical aptitude came out on top. She said my choice was teacher, nurse, [or] secretary.”

Finerty, however, did not accept her teacher’s advice. When her family moved to Ohio, she began seeking managerial work, only to find that there were no such positions available for women. Consequently, she decided to create her own management position by starting her first business in 1988. Today, Finerty draws on her experiences at a Fortune 500, owning two small businesses, helping grow a business to $10 million, working as an assistant to a CPA, and working in office management to guide new and potential small business owners.

While Briggs, Finerty’s and Jones’ experiences are, in many ways, in keeping with national statistics, their career paths are not. Both women thrive in jobs that the White House Council on Women and Girls would not consider “traditional female occupations.”

creative writing. He is currently working part-time at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce.

All three credit the Chamber with helping them succeed. “When I moved into Orange County, I knew no one in the business community, not one soul,” Briggs said. “The Business Council of Westchester was always a source of networking and community for me prior to moving here, so I immediately joined the Orange County Chamber of Commerce thinking it would be similar,” she continued. “As I got more familiar, I began attending breakfasts, mixers and events that exposed me to people I had never met before, perfect for networking and building relationships!”

Briggs feels that the benefits of her Chamber membership have also been industry specific. “I joined the Marketing Committee so that we, the collective creative and marketing agencies in Orange County, could support the Chamber and its members though our collective experience, expertise and wisdom. Joining the Chamber has been an integral part of DesignWorks NY’s marketing mix, an excellent value and an incalculable return on our investment,” she said.

Finerty agrees that the Chamber has been a valuable resource. “Some of the individuals I met at committee meetings have provided referrals or hired my company to write plans or teach classes,” she said.

Jones thanks the Chamber for allowing her business to grow, but advises that being a member is not enough. “You need to actively participate in the events the Chamber offers in order to excel,” she said. “The continued growth of women-owned and women led businesses are accelerated through these tools that allow them to start their business, grow it and create more jobs.”

Jones credits much of her business success to consistent networking. “Through networking, I was able to demonstrate my passion and knowledge,” Jones said.

Briggs, Finerty and Jones, like many businesswomen in the U.S., still see room for improvement.

“Women have proven themselves to be assets, but still face adversity,” said Jones.

Finerty feels likewise. “The USA has come a long way, but [there is still further to go].”

The Orange County Chamber of Commerce seeks to promote such continued improvement and is looking forward to working with women – and men – to enhance the position – and maximize the talent -- of women in business during Women in Business Month.

Breakfast to Focus on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Projects Energize NY Finance is an innovative product that enables eligible commercially owned buildings in New York State to secure financing for deep energy upgrades and renewable energy projects.

Two of Energize NY’s professionals will be the guest speakers at the Chamber’s Thursday, July 10 membership breakfast, which will begin at 7:27 a.m. at West Hills Country Club in Middletown.

Tom Bregman is Director of Energize NY. He has led the DOE-NYSERDA funded residential energy efficiency program since its inception in 2010. A 20-year resident of Orange County, he has been involved in local land preservation and sustainability projects in New York State for more than two decades.

Energize NY’s Community Outreach Director, Heather Flournoy, will be the other breakfast speaker. She has 20 years of experience working with mission-driven businesses, entrepreneurs and non-profits to build their community presence, strengthen existing relationships, build their following and loyalty, and create internal enthusiasm.

Attitude. Presentation. Message. Courage.As a professional creative who made the decision early in his career to focus on business communications, I’d like to address the art of advertising. Is that too pretentious, do you think? Categorizing advertising as an art form? Are we getting a little too carried away here?

From the moment we wake we are inundated with visual imagery; billboards, brochures, posters, newspapers, magazines, television, business cards, games, computers, junk mail, the internet, sides of buses, e-mail. Sophisticated computer art and hundreds of high-impact graphics call to us every day. It’s no wonder we, as a society, have hardened ourselves to virtually ignore what we don’t wish to see.

Unfortunately for the average marketer, this means that bad advertising is a waste of money and adequate advertising becomes lost in the masses. But there are ways to get the most out of your advertising if you keep a few key thoughts in mind.

IT IS A MATTER OF ATTITuDE.

As we glance through a newspaper or magazine, how many ads really grab us? How many reach out and force us to notice them? To remember them? To respect them?

An effective ad will disrupt casual skimming through hundreds of attention-begging graphics and headlines. It will grab attention by message or visual impact or placement for that split second necessary to implant a brand or call-to-action in our conscious, or subconscious, thoughts. Remember, “safe” rarely increases sales. At best, it maintains – at worst, it bores.

IT IS A MATTER OF PRESENTATION.

To disturb someone’s sense of normalcy is not at all the same thing as to offend them. Here’s an experiment to try in your business. Hang a competent, but boring, poster on a prominent wall for two weeks. Count the number of comments it receives from visitors, if any. Now replace it with something bold and unusual, maybe even a little bit crazy. Count those comments. Welcome to the art of advertising.

Consider a small retailer with a limited budget who’s one print ad in a weekly paper always read, “$10 off WITH THIS AD.” Now, consider her surprise as responses doubled when the same ad was run upside down with the new headline, “What’s wrong with this ad?” and the promise, “$10 off if you guess right.”

IT IS A MATTER OF MESSAGE.

A local home builder was putting up a development of townhouses in a glutted market. As he leafed through the real estate section, page after page of developers’ ads screamed at him,

promising everything from image enhancement to a better sex life. How could he compete with them? His ad? An ultra-realistic hand reaching down from the sky tearing townhouses out of the ground. Tiny people surrounded this spectacle, gawking in disbelief. The headline? They’re Moving Fast…GRAB ONE WHILE YOU CAN! Guess who sold all of his townhouses.

IT IS A MATTER OF COuRAGE.

I’d like to tip my hat to the brave clients through the years who have been willing to try something different. Something that stood them apart.

Yes, I conceived and pitched the upside down “What’s wrong?” ad, but it was the client who said, “Okay, let’s give it a shot.” And, yes, I labored as hard and as long on the pencil illustration of townhouses torn from the ground as on any canvas I’ve ever painted. But it was the client with the courage to say, “Let’s not settle for something that looks as good as theirs. Let’s try something different than everybody else. Let’s BE different than everybody else.”

CONNECT wITH TECHNOLOGY AT THE ALL-NEw ORANGE COUNTY CHAMBER EXPO

If you’re a buyer, seller or just a user of technology – and who isn’t? – ExPO 2014 at Anthony’s Pier 9 is where you should be on Wednesday, September 10.

In addition to being the largest and most comprehensive business trade show in the region for more than 20 years, the Orange County Chamber ExPO this year will have a special section focused exclusively on technology: what’s new, what’s exciting, and what’s available from our very own Chamber members.

As always, ExPO will showcase nearly 200 local businesses and organizations. But exciting new vendors, displays, demonstrations and just plain fun await the thousands of visitors who will pass through the doors of Anthony’s Pier 9 on September 10.

The visitor-friendly ExPO layout once again will make it much easier to navigate the venue, enhancing access for both exhibitors and visitors. Last year’s popular Business Hub will be back, with enhanced wifi, so visitors and vendors not only can meet with clients and customers, but will also be able to do business comfortably all day, taking advantage of a wireless system installed specifically for ExPO.

Also new this year will be a pre-show breakfast get-together for ExPO exhibitors to make it as easy as possible for vendors to network with one another before the crowds arrive and they have to staff their booths. This will truly maximize the exhibitor investment. A variety of exhibitor rates are available, ranging from $325 for a tabletop display, to $550 for a single booth and $1,100 for a double booth.
