TomFeltensteinHostsMarketingandSocialMediaSeminarTom Feltenstein, marketing legend and best selling author, conducted a sold-out workshop “Explode Your Sales with Killer Marketing & Social Media Tactics” at the Chamber this morning. Attendees received Tom’s new book “501 Killer Marketing Tactics” and a wealth of sales secrets during the morning seminar, which is a yearly occurrence. Special thanks to Chick-fil-A for providing breakfast.

Know it or not, like it or not, employment laws effect every employer. “Starting Off on the Right Foot, Staying in Step Along the Way” workshop charts the many federal, state and local employment laws and their impacts so that businesses of all sizes (and ages) may assess- and limit – their risks.

Christine Hanley, Christine D. Hanley & Associates, P.A., a noted employment and labor law attorney, will present this workshop on Tuesday, October 26, 8:30 a.m. in the Chamber Board Room. The workshop is free for members who pre-register and $10 for non-members. Materials will be provided.

ATHENAAWARDSHONORLOCALAREALEADERS,BUSINESSESANDYOUNGPROFESSIONALSLocal area leaders, businesses, and young professionals came together September 17 to honor three exceptional recipients with the 2010 ATHENA award. This year’s recipients are Victoria Chouris, South Florida Fair & Palm Beach County Expositions in the Individual category; The City of West Palm Beach in the Business category and Sarah Alsofrom, State Attorney’s Office in the Young Professional Leadership category.

“The ATHENA Awards recognize truly inspiring women who are active in our community, excel in their professions and take the time to reach out and mentor others. To hear their personal stories, you can’t help but admire what they’ve accomplished as well as what they’ve done to inspire others,” said Don DeWoody, Chairman, Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. “The recipients have shown outstanding leadership and are true role models for the community. The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches is honored to recognize these leaders with the ATHENA Award.”

The ATHENA Awards, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, honors individuals, businesses, and young professionals who have achieved professional excellence, actively served the community, and helped women to reach their leadership potential. The luncheon began with a wonderful video presentation, produced by City of West Palm Beach TV 18, spotlighting all of the award finalists. Tania Rogers of WPTV NewsChannel 5, served as the Master of Ceremonies. Patti Hamilton of SWS/Sun Recycling, and a past ATHENA recipient, was the event’s Chair.

The ATHENA Individual Award, sponsored by SWS/Sun Recycling, was presented to Victoria Chouris, Vice President and Chief

Ms Chouris, who has been with the Fair for 25 years, and has chaired two statewide associations - the Florida Federation of Fairs and Livestock Shows and the Florida Festivals and Events Association. The mission of both is to mentor individuals in the event industry. She is a member of the Miss America scholarship organization, a group that recognizes young women for contributions to their communities.

The Business ATHENA Award, sponsored by Squire, Sanders and Dempsey, was presented to The City of West Palm Beach. The City employs women-friendly business practices in order to attract, promote and retain female employees. Currently 44% of its management positions are occupied by women, including its Mayor.

The Young Professional ATHENA Award, sponsored by CityPlace, was presented to Sarah Alsofrom, Public Information Officer for the State Attorney’s Office. Ms. Alsofrom has been presenting interactive professionalism seminars to university students throughout Florida and is a tireless volunteer for many community organizations. The Guest Speaker was Dr. Mary Jane Saunders, the new President of Florida Atlantic University.

HealthCareCommitteeThanks to Impact Leadership Network/Christ Fellowship Church and Marcia Goodwin, Coordinator, for hosting and sponsoring our Health Care Committee Meeting. Our speakers, Sarah Byrd from the Healthcare Ministry and Nancy Smith from Cancer Support and Deaf Ministry, did a great job informing the group about the assistance and support that is provided to members of the church and the community. The areas of assistance:• Help navigate the healthcare system complete applications for benefits.• Understand insurance• Communicate more effectively with their doctors• Assist in care planning for elderly family members• Access dental and medical careThe Health Care Committee meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month. For more information on the Health Care Committee or to host a luncheon, contact Deborah Drotar, Membership Development at [email protected] or call (561) 833-3711 (ext. 236).

The Women in Business Committee September meeting was graciously hosted by Trish Lowry at the Florida’s Blood Centers offices in North Palm Beach. The FBC provides blood to 70 hospitals throughout the state and is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make sure the blood meets the highest standards. Donations save the lives of trauma patients, premature babies, cancer patients and people needing surgery.

The group welcomed Stacey Branchini, who along with her husband Tom, created It Happened to Alexa Foundation, which honors the courage of their daughter Alexa who survived a traumatic rape by a stranger who broke into her college dormitory the second week of her freshman year. Although the perpetrator was caught the same night, Alexa endured 18 months of court delays and an invasive investigation into her character and reputation. The Foundation was created so that financial limitations would not prevent other families from supporting their loved ones during rail when they need it the most and helps pay the costs of hotels and travel expenses.

WomeninBusinessThe next women in Business Committee meting will be Thursday, October 14, 11:45 a.m. in the Chamber Boardroom. Contact Kelley Burke, [email protected] for information.

It was a wise choice to join the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. Having recently moved from Miami where I successfully ran my company for over ten years, I am enthusiastic about growing my business in the West Palm Beach area. The chamber events have been great venues to network, learn about other local businesses and share information about the services my company provides. I particularly enjoyed the recent power networking event where I made valuable contacts. Suzy WilkoffTasks Unlimitedwww.tasksunlimited.com

Each year the Chamber holds a huge silent auction featuring items donated by our membership. In the past the donations have ranged from goods and services, gift certificates, baskets, tailgate parties, hotel stays, trips and hot air balloon rides.

This year, the auction will be held online like eBay, so that the entire membership can participate in this exciting fund-raiser. By “going digital” the Chamber will be able to accept many more auction items and the bidding will take place over a two week period instead of being restricted to just one evening event.

Members who donate an item will be promoted on flyers as well as articles and updates which will feature key items. To donate an item visit

www.palmbeaches.org and fill out the short form or contact Kelley Burke at (561) 833-3711 ext.231 or [email protected]. The Chamber is a 501(C6) organization and the contributions to Chamber events are tax deductible as an ordinary business expense.

The newly-formed Science and Technology Committee will be offering educational insight as a new benefit to Chamber members. Our first endeavour will be a quarterly-based Educational Series of workshops entitled “Get I.T.?”. Our goal is to provide information, resources, and expertise on hot topics in business technology. These fun and interactive workshops will empower local businesses with the tools and resources to improve their bottom line, and the way their business communicates. Unified Communications? Office to office extension-based dialing? Save money by upgrading our technology? Sharing ideas and material with multiple people, in multiple locations, all at the same time? The Science and Technology Committee will serve as a resource for members to gain knowledge and answers to these questions and more.

FEWER JOBSPassing Amendment 4 will cost Florida tens of thousands of jobs and hurt working families. We’re in the deepest recession in our lifetime and it’s no time to pass an amendment that leading business groups call a “jobs killer.”

WEAKER ECONOMYDuring these difficult economic times, the last thing we need to do is pass Amendment 4; experts say it will raise property taxes, hurt our sluggish economy, and make it more expensive to live in Florida.

HIGHER TAXESAmendment 4 will mean higher taxes in order to pay for more elections, more litigation and more bureaucracy. Property taxes could hit record levels to cover the soaring costs of Amendment 4.

UNWORKABLEAmendment 4 is so extreme and so poorly written that it doesn’t provide exceptions for vital community needs such as hospitals, police stations, fire trucks and new schools.

AMENDMENT 4 HAS ALREADY FAILED

St. Pete Beach has already passed a local version of Amendment 4; it’s been a disaster, costing local taxpayers nearly $1 million in legal fees. Amendment 4 will cost taxpayers millions, hurt working families, and devastate our economy.

A comprehensive economic report on Amendment 4 indicates that this measure will mean fewer jobs and higher costs for all of Florida’s working families. “An estimated 267,247 high-wage jobs for Florida residents are at rick directly or indirectly from the potential adverse impacts associated with the passage of Amendment 4…” writes Professor Tony Villamil, Dean of the School of Business at St. Thomas University and lead economist for The Washington Economics Group (WEG), which conducted the study.

Amendment 4 will impact “the whole economy of Florida,” says WEG. The study goes on to indicate that, under Amendment 4, “Florida’s economic dynamism is lost. [Amendment 4] would permanently impact the economic growth potential for Florida, causing a steady decline in the standard of living of all Florida residents. Further, permanently impacting employment and growth within major industries and job-generating activities.

Ultimately, Amendment 4 would “force local and state governments to either raise taxes or cut services. Public schools, public safety and local health care services would suffer from both the direct impact of Amendment 4 (delay construction until the next election) and the indirect impact of fewer tax revenues from which to fund needed operations and capital investments.”

The study goes on the conclude that “Amendment 4’s passage will have potentially devastating consequences to Florida’s economy at a time when the economic situation at both the state and national levels is uncertain and at a time when attracting new businesses to Florida is essential for the future recovery and prosperity of the state and its residents.”
