Kathrine Switzer, the woman who, in 1967, challenged the all-male tradition of the Boston Marathon and became the first woman to officially enter and run, will be the keynote at the Professional Women’s Chamber’s (PWC) luncheon at the Western Mass. Business Expo on November 6, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at the MassMutual Center.
Switzer’s entry into the race created an uproar and worldwide notoriety when a race official tried to remove her from the competition. The photo of this confrontation flashed around the globe and became one of Time-Life’s “100 Photos that Changed the World.” More than 40 years later, Switzer’s story continues to capture the public’s imagination. Today, Switzer is president of Marathon Woman and Atlanta Sports Promotions, Inc.
In addition to her historic run in the Boston Marathon, Switzer has run 39 marathons, won the 1974 New York City Marathon and, in 1975, her two-hour and 51 minute marathon in Boston was ranked sixth in the world and third in the United States in women’s marathons.
In addition to a successful running career, Switzer had a successful tenure in sports marketing, broadcasting and motivational speaking. She is a staunch supporter of creating opportunities for women and created the Avon International Running Circuit and was instrumental in making the women’s marathon an official event in the Olympic Games. She worked for all major television networks, spending much of her time with ABC Wide World of Sports, covered over 200 events

to integrate social media into their marketing activities. The study also noted that 61 percent reported a significant learning curve before truly utilizing social media, with many companies still searching for the best way to demonstrate the impact of social media and the contribution to the bottom line.
The research is clear that businesses are still clamoring for information. The Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield’s (ACCGS) inaugural Lunch ‘n Learn program on October 9, 2013, presented by Six-Point Creative Works, will help businesses learn more about social media.
Meghan Lynch, president and chief executive officer for Six-Point, will take attendees through a review of potential social media strategies, help attendees learn how to determine if social media is appropriate for their brand and examine where deploying resources makes sense and where it could drain human capital.

Local Businesses Strengthen Regional
EconomyThe Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, Inc. (ACCGS) has announced the honorees for its annual Super 60 award.
Now in its 24th year, the program celebrates the success of the fastest-growing and privately-owned businesses in the region which continue to make significant contributions to the strength of the regional economy.
To be considered, companies must be based in Hampden or Hampshire counties or be a member of the ACCGS, have revenues of at least $1 million in the last fiscal year, be an independent and privately-owned company, and be in business at least three full years. Companies are selected based on their percentage of revenue growth over a full three-year period or total revenues for the latest fiscal year.
This year’s winners hail from 13 communities across the region and represent all sectors of the economy, including non-profit, academia, energy, technology, manufacturing, retail and service. Five companies and organizations are members of the ACCGS affiliate, East of the River Chamber of Commerce, and twenty-two companies and organizations are members of the ACCGS affiliate, Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
“Small business is the backbone of our region, and the success of this year’s winners is a clear indication that our regional economy is strong,” said ACCGS President Jeffrey Ciuffreda. He noted that the average revenue of each of the companies in the Total Revenue category exceeded $35 million with a combined revenue of over $1 billion. One-third of the companies in the Revenue Growth category experienced growth in excess of 50 percent with the average growth of all the honorees in that category at more than 49 percent. As well, six honorees in the Total Growth category also qualified for the Revenue Growth category, and eight honorees in the Revenue Growth category also qualified for the Total Revenue category.

Brewer Jim Koch founded The Boston Beer Company in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe uncovered in his father’s attic. After bringing the recipe to life in his kitchen, Koch brought his Samuel Adams beer door-to-door to bars in Boston, convinced that drinkers would appreciate a full-flavored American craft beer.
Koch will be the featured speaker at the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield’s (ACCGS) Business@Breakfast sponsored by the Regional Employment Board of Hampden County, Centerplate and United
Personnel Services and presented at the Western Mass. Business Expo on November 6, 2013 from 7:15 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield.
While Koch’s story is one of success, his journey wasn’t always smooth. His Harvard education and his years as a management consultant really didn’t prepare him for the obstacles that many small businesses struggle with today. No bank would give him a loan. No distributors would carry his beer, making it nearly impossible to get Samuel Adams to bars and to beer drinkers.
For almost 30 years, Koch has creatively overcome the obstacles in his path, and Samuel Adams Boston Lager is widely recognized as the catalyst in the American craft beer revolution.
Today, The Boston Beer Company employs approximately 900 people with breweries in Boston, Cincinnati and Pennsylvania. Its family of beers includes over 50 different styles, with Sam Adams beers available in all 50 states and more than 20 foreign countries.
Koch continues to push the boundaries in brewing and in business and is committed to helping other small business owners live their American dream. In 2008, he started “Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream®” to provide microloans to small business owners who lack access to traditional financing. In 2010, the prestigious Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy gave its small business award to Koch and The Boston Beer Company for it effortswith Brewing the American Dream.
Reservations for the breakfast are $25 per person. Reservations may be made online at www.myonlinechamber.com or by contacting Cecile Larose at [email protected].
