The Synergy matter that we have been pursuing has gone to the next step. John Taylor and I have met with Geoff Parnell (the Board’s appointee) and HFM the consultants appointed by the Board. The different options available to us were discussed and will be checked out by HFM who will report to the Board for discussion at the October board meeting and with us in November. Our preferred option is to have a specialist company install the panels and batteries at their expense and contract to sell Ocean Gardens power at a reduced rate per kilowatt. This combined with negotiations with Synergy to provide back-up for a run of bad weather when insufficient power is produced or in case of a break down, at a reasonable cost would result in reduced power costs to residents. We will keep you informed.
Lyn Hall and her team of helpers did a magnificent job with the recent Anniversary Dinner. Did you know that Margaret Hainsworth was an original resident – the only one remaining? Margaret and her husband Donald, who became the first president of the Residents’ Committee, moved into the village 33 years ago. Donald is no longer with us but Margaret is still going strong. Daphne and I were living up the road at 21 Kalinda Drive when the village was being constructed but never ever imagined we would be living here. Darren Cooper was the sole representative from the Board but when introduced spoke extremely well and more than made up for not matching the dinner suited residents around him.
Have you visited the Community Garden down beyond the croquet court yet? It is a very pleasant area in the Village and well worth a visit.

Car Safety: A common crime is stealing from cars. New cars have high security, so thieves need to steal the keys from inside your house. Thieves may target high value vehicles.
Online Safety: Online fraud and SCAMS are increasingly common. Many involve fake emails. Never click on a link in an email unless you know the sender and are 100% confident it’s valid. Always check the email address and do not rely on the name from whom it appears to come. Scammers get names of friends and then insert your friend’s name with a different email address. Scams often come from overseas. Scammers even bounce their fake emails through other countries to protect themselves from being found.
Credit Card Safety: ‘Tap-n-go’ is convient but does mean your card can be misused if lost or stolen. Report a lost card immediately. Bank phone APPs can link your phone to your credit card. Any transaction using the credit card comes up on your phone, so you can monitor. Do not carry unnecessary valuables when out. When at home, keep your credit cards secure. Put your handbag/wallet away.
Hand Bag Safety: To avoid bag-snatch, carry your handbag under your arm with the strap over your shoulder. Keep your bag zipped. If you can’t resist the bag snatcher, look carefully at the offender and memorise a description to give police.
Phone Scam Safety: When it is a scam caller, there is usually a gap (silence) before they speak - HANG UP! Do not give any information. The Tax Office, banks and police will never phone you to request payment. These calls are always scammers. Be aware that the number shown as the calling number may not be valid. Scammers have the technology to show fake phone numbers.
Door Knocker Safety: Door knockers can be scam ‘tradies’ who pose as tree loopers, roof repairers or offer some other ‘urgent’ repair. They request up-front payment and then disappear.

On 18 August 1920, the 19th Amendment: Women’s Right to Vote was passed in the United States of America. Just over 100 years, how much has changed.
Wifing tips was taken from an issue of Housekeeping Monthly in 1955.
• Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.
• Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimise all noise. At the time of his
arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.
• Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.
• Listen to him. You may have a dozen of important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first – remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.
• Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.
• A good wife always knows her place.

THE OFFICE BUILDING THAT RON BUILT
History of the AMP Building
The site on the corner of St Georges Terrace and William Street known as “Carr’s Corner” was purchased by AMP in 1910, and in 1915 the AMP Chambers designed by Oldham and Cox were built on the corner. This six-storey building was clad with sandstone, and the interior was decorated with jarrah. Demolition of the building started in May 1972.
Down with the old, up with the new
Ron and Jan Kilcullen moved to Perth from Melbourne to build the AMP building based in the Perth CBD that is currently
wedged between the South 32 building (formerly known as Bankwest Towers) and Central Park building becoming the tallest completed skyscraper in Perth in 1975.
The initial construction of the building started in 1972 and completed in 1974 with the help of two cranes and 400 people working onsite not including consultants, etc. Ron was the Site Construction Manager for the project, his qualification was based on a diploma and extensive work experience as a builder.
Ron explained step by step on how building was constructed from the underground parking to the skyscraping roof. Times were also different back then as the building companies had all of its resources under one roof and acted as one big family and not relying on sub-contractors as they do today.
Ron did recall a few incidents, one of them happened from a 2am phone call, when a wheel of the scaffold dropped onto a car bonnet that happened to be a police vehicle.

WellnessHow lovely has it been to see the sunshine again following our very wet winter.
Warmer days are calling, and we are busily preparing our aqua program that will kick off again in November. Aqua classes are especially good for those with joint problems where you might find exercising on land uncomfortable. If you haven’t tried a class before, or are planning on returning, please come along to our Aqua Clinic, bring your questions and discover the benefits of our aqua classes.
Our next health topic is focussed on sleep: the changes that occur as we age; what stops us from getting a good night’s sleep; and how poor sleep habits affect our mood and mental health, which then
in turn affects our physical health. To help you understand these changes we have engaged a sleep specialist to discuss how we all can improve our sleep health (see below for further information).
Finally, a gentle reminder to please arrive to class on time. An important part of exercise is the warm-up component to ensure muscles and joints are ready to move and avoiding risk of injury.
Stay well.

WellnessCLASS INFORMATION
IN FOCUS Each month we feature one of our regular group classes to provide more detail about what you can expect from that session. This month we are highlighting:
**FunFit** Monday & Wednesday, 8:30am, Function Room
FunFit (short for functional fitness) is for those who are looking to maintain their health and fitness in a slightly more challenging class. We add in a whole lot of fun as well so that you don’t think about the exercise part too much. FunFit:
• Is a 40 minute group exercise format, similar in style to Prime Movers
• Utilises light dumbbells (0.5-1kg) and body weight exercises to provide a light resistance challenge while providing a cardiovascular workout at the same time
• Has great music to encourage you to move, and occasionally sing!
We provide some modification of exercises or alternatives to suit differing limitations, but residents should have good general mobility and be able to transition between exercises without assistance. Of course, the best part of the FunFit class is the coffee catch up afterwards!
Please get in touch with the Wellness Team if you have any questions. We look forward to welcoming you in class soon.
Gym Use Reminder: It’s wonderful to see the gym being used on a regular basis by our residents, but we
do ask that you remember to put away any equipment you use to reduce the risk of trip hazards. For infection control, please make sure you use the disinfectant spray to clean down all the touch points on the equipment you use.
Also, while WA has been fortunate to avoid Covid lockdowns and restrictions, it is still mandatory to use the contact registers. You can either scan in with your phone as you enter the gym or write your name on the contact register. Details of the register are only kept for a three-month period and then discarded securely.
If you’re new to our gym or would like a refresher on how to use the equipment safely, please get in touch and book a gym induction with us. Your safety is our highest priority!
It’s up to all of us to look out for each other and we thank you for your support.
Wednesday Tai Chi: Unfortunately, we are cancelling our 12pm Wednesday Tai Chi classes for October. Renate has a few training events to attend that conflict with classes. Participants are welcome to join us on a Tuesday morning at 9am (on the Gym Deck or in the Ritson Room, depending on the weather).
For the Diary: November will see us move to a summer program, please keep an eye out for the return of aqua classes and some minor time changes to existing classes.
Updated timetables are available from reception.
It’s been a busy couple of months in the culinary hub of the village!
We had a wonderful Anniversary Dinner this year, with a fantastic atmosphere and so much cheer! Thanks to all the ladies that decorate the tables and the room so beautifully! It was certainly a night of glitz and glamor! And all the wonderful feedback was so appreciated.
Our evening meals have been so popular and the Fish and Chips night is packed every month! Please be sure to book early! The sign up sheet is up at the kiosk!
Our home delivery is still going strong!
It’s nice to think you can have a fresh, hot, homemade meal delivered to your door!
Our meals are all made from scratch. If you don’t have a large appetite, we do suggest our homemade soup. All our soups are
made with fresh food and are preservatives free with no artificial ingredients at all! This is served with a bread roll in a convenient container that is microwave friendly!
Our fortnight menu can be found in your letterbox and after ticking your preferences, can be given in at reception for your order to be booked in!
If you haven’t filled out the fortnight menu and you just fancy a one off meal, please leave a message on our phone and will can deliver! As always if you have any dietary restrictions or questions please don’t hesitate to call the kitchen on 92853017. We are ready to help and nothing is a problem!
Look forward to serving you.
