Summertime is here again and the hot tickets in the Burton Taylor Studio are a cool £10 or less.

The Trinity term programme serves up a mixture of classic titles, new writing and comedy sketch shows, all performed, directed and produced by students at the University of Oxford.

For families, we’re producing a brand new show What To Do When You Find a Dinosaur that is perfect for young (and not so young) explorers and adventurers.

The wonderful Eyestrings, who brought The Duchess of Malfi to the BT in 2012, returns with See What I See, while Francesca Millican-Slater examines her perfect home in The Forensics of a Flat (and other stories).

There’s loads more to watch, so enjoy looking through our brochure and we hope to see you in the BT soon.

BANKSY: THE ROOM IN THE ELEPHANT

In 2011, UK graffiti artist Banksy spray painted ‘This Looks A Bit Like An Elephant ’ on the side of an old water tank in Los Angeles. The disused tank was home to a man called Tachowa Covington who had furnished it with carpets, a stove and even CCTV. The tank instantly became a work of art and was taken away to be sold. By making a statement did Banksy end up making a man homeless?

Vladimir and Estragon have been waiting for days, months, possibly years. But for whom exactly? They have been told to expect a man called Godot, but when?

Curious Incident Productions presents Samuel Beckett’s brilliant tragi-comedy, named ‘the most important play of the 20th Century ’ by the New York Times. Immerse yourself in the intimate and strange world of Vladimir and Estragon as they reflect on the absurd and the macabre with lightning wit.

Robin and Jacqui suffer from keraunothnetophobia, a chronic fear of falling satellites. Both are confined to their homes, with little contact to the outside world.

After meeting online, they connect and slowly fall in love – but is there any meaning in their relationship if they have never met face-to-face?

This insightful piece by James Graham enjoyed a hugely popular professional tour in 2009, and now comes to Oxford for the first time.

I know what it’s like. Screaming at your subconscious to make it stop asking questions. I know, doctor. You can’t hide from me.

Welcome to the world of Vico, a darkly humorous sociopath obsessed with the cycles and circles that permeate life. Vico enters the office of Finn, one of the most renowned psychologists in London and attempts to drive her to the edge in a desperate bid to fulfil her own cyclical philosophy.

Set to an electronic soundscape, this witty piece of new writing promises an intimate, innovative and unsettling evening of dark comedy.

Hilary is a fifty year-old on the edge.

A former Greenham Common protestor, she now battles with her teenage daughter’s sexual experiences, the breakdown of a lonely marriage, and the onset of menopause without losing her sense of humour.

First performed at the Royal Court in 2011, this play will lead you through the lands of middle age with plenty of rude comedy and frank emotion.

Josh Kendall is a good man, says the student who slept with him. And who are we to sayotherwise?

What’s the boundary between a man and a monster? And what evidence do we need to decide?

Role Call tells the story of a man who destroys himself by crossing the line between teacher and companion, and of a girl ’s battle to make contact with a kindred spirit. A sharp, insightful and entertaining new play.

But that means we’re gonna be stuck in the past...forever!

Join sketch comedy group Look and Learn as they traverse the tropes of time travel in what some critics are already calling the must-see show about time travel at the BT Studio this term.

How will the hot tub come into it? Where on earth will they end up? Or, more importantly, when? It could be different every night (but it probably won’t)! So sit back, relax, and let the hot, time-travelly goodness flow.

WEEK 8

Four voices call out from the stage. Their words layer over each other and mingle into a pained and lyrical cry for love in a barren world.

Hypnotist Theatre presents Sarah Kane’s fiercely emotive and innovatively freeform play, Crave: an intensely poetic portrayal of love and suffering, elevating the beauty of language above all.

CRAVEBy Sarah Kane

This original comedy piece from In Medias Crazed Productions stars Mortimer and Charles, a pair of upper class inmates arrested for the heinous crimes of fixing Crufts and public school sports days.

The show follows the duo’s desperate attempts to put on a sketch show for the rest of their all-male prison to convince the warden of their eligibility for parole. However, as the production spirals out of control the audience may be left wondering whether the real crime was letting these two anywhere near a stage...

UNCHAINED FELONYBy Tommy Jolowicz & Jordan Reed

Two women sit side by side. Communication is fragmented, confused. One cries out to the image of an unborn child, the other tries to understand where she is. In another world, two women struggle with womanhood, fertility and patriarchal rule.

This original piece of theatre immerses its audience in the harrowing tale of life, death and what happens in between.

Jack Barry and Annie McGrath are a unique young double act whose curious sketches are filled with flights of fancy and offbeat charm. They’re also completely identical twins.

Catch this preview of their delightfully deadpan sketch comedy show before it heads to the Edinburgh Fringe for their debut hour.

Jack Barry and Annie McGrath have undeniable comic chemistry, bouncing off each other with a genuine ease and charm. Fest

See What I See is a bold dissection of the notion of sanity within Shakespeare.

Set within the confines of a mental hospital, Owen Horsley (Assistant Director for the RSC and Associate Director with Cheek by Jowl) takes many of Shakespeare’s most memorable scenes and characters and presents them as a visceral examination of the ways madness lies.

Eyestrings presents striking new interpretations of classic texts and was last at the BT with the acclaimed The Duchess of Malfi.

This sort of daring, intelligent work is what fringe theatre should be all about.Stage on Eyestrings’ The Duchess of Malfi

This production will be accompanied by a workshop. See page 14 for more details.

Join MCS for a romp through Chekhov’s lighter side, as they present four of his popular farces in a fast-paced evening of refined absurdity, Russian style. The Bear, The Dangers of Tobacco, The Proposal and The Wedding Party are all at once grandly melodramatic and bitingly comic, with a parody of Russian angst as the common theme.

Directed and performed by Sixth Formers from Magdalen College School, catch this show before it transfers to the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

Everybody likes digging, right? Maybe you use a spade, or just your hands. Sand or earth fly everywhere until you discover something. Perhaps it’s a stone, or an old toy, or that biscuit you’d been saving. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s …a dinosaur! In 1824 an eccentric Oxford scientist, William Buckland, discovered a bone from a creature that no one had ever seen before. He named it the Megalosaurus, and he was desperate to tell the world about it. Are you ready to join him when the amazing dinosaur story first begins?

Oxford Playhouse presents Oxford’s very own pre-historic story in this bone-shaking, music-making, belly-aching show for everyone aged 4 to 8 years and their families.

On the evenings of Wed 17, Thu 18 and Fri 19 September we will be holding a series of talks for adults. Please check oxfordplayhouse.com or call the Ticket Office on 01865 305 305 for more information.

I WISH I WAS LONELY

When We Embraced is a playful and charming show about two people. Actually, it’s about you. In fact it’s about everyone, but really it’s about two people, one of which may be you.

It’s about the connections we make and all the little nooks and crannies in life that we mistake for things that are utterly insignificant, simply because we can’t describe it, or that it doesn’t fit into one of our neatly constructed categories.

This is a show about experiencing the best bits and the worst bits in equal measure. It’s a show about embracing things you’ve not embraced before.

I Wish I Was Lonely is an interactive show about contactability. A show in which the audience commit to leaving their phones on. A show investigating what it means to participate in communication – or not. There will be poems, there will be stories and there will be conversation.

The new show from Fringe First winners Hannah Jane Walker and Chris Thorpe, who brought The Oh F*ck Moment to Oxford last year, I Wish I Was Lonely asks how much of ourselves we’ve given up to the new gods in our pockets.

An excellently crafted piece, both thoughtful and relevant, which challenges us to take a step back from our technology-obsessed lives. HHHH Time Out

Shoe Baby is a magical puppet show! A fantastical sing-a-long adventure with a baby who takes to the sea, to the air, to the zoo all in a shoe!

Adapted from the book by Joyce Dunbar, this charming story is mixed with music from Tom Gray of the award-winning band Gomez and was awarded Best Children’s Show of Brighton Festival 2006.

Absolutely fantastic.Guardian

I live in a flat made of wooden walls, 70’s carpet and doors that are locked from the other side. In the dark of the night, I listen to the building. It tells of finger prints on door handles, skin cells in the carpet, ghosts in the plumbing.

Francesca tells stories about her beloved flat, the area it stands in, what it used to be, what it will become and the people that have populated it. It’s a bit stand up, a bit biography, a bit documentation – a love affair with a local area to the tune of bad Karaoke.

Clever and touching.Guardian on Me, Myself and Mrs Gibbs

Created in association with Birmingham REP.

Didn’t there come a point when you thought enough was enough?

Yes. There did.

Rebekah is back at her parents’ house, holed up with her old university essays and family records.

Determined to move on with her life, she begins writing the story of her great-grandfather, a World War One conscientious objector. But each page brings the events she is trying to outrun even closer. Rebekah‘s own story needs to be told.

This gripping new play asks us to consider what we’d do if pushed to the edge.

Are you ready to create a brand new play in a week?

This high-energy summer holiday workshop will dive in to the depths of your imaginations exploring fairy tales, folklore, beasts and beauties as you create a show in just one week! Using storytelling, improvisation and drama games and inspired by the story of this year’s pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, the workshop will build towards a performance for friends and family at the end of the week. A brilliant opportunity to make friends, build your confidence and have bags of fun.

Eyestrings Artistic Director Owen Horsley delivers a practical and fun workshop that delves deep into the psychology of Shakespeare’s text, using a mix of acting, verse and movement exercises to get into the heart and head of his most complex characters. By examining Shakespeare’s rich text in the light of modern psychology this workshop will drag the issues that haunt characters such as Ophelia, Lady Macbeth and The Jailer’s Daughter out into the open, while developing practical acting skills along the way.
