A big THANK YOU to all that have embraced our inaugural Christmas in July and Change for Children Campaigns.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1EDITORIAL POLICY

The Columbus Chapter News is published monthly for the educaon and benefit of legal administrators. It is not published for the purpose of rendering legal, accounng, or other professional services or advice. ALA MISSION STATEMENT

The Associaon of Legal Administrators’ (ALA) mission is to promote and enhance the competence and professionalism of all members of the management team; improve the quality of management in law firms and other legal services organizaons; and represent professional legal management and managers to the legal community and to the community at large.

COLUMBUS CHAPTER, ALA MISSION STATEMENT

The Columbus Chapter, Associaon of Legal Administrators, provides educaonal and networking opportunies to administrators with varied legal backgrounds in the Central Ohio area. We are commied to increasing awareness and building relaonships, upholding the integrity of our profession, giving back to our community, contribung to the ongoing training of our membership, and supporng one another in our chosen careers.

of food/beverages, friends and laughter. There will be bowling and other games available for those that wish to parcipate. Hope to see you there!

A big THANK YOU to all that have embraced our inaugural Christmas in July and Change for Children Campaigns. To date, we have raised $180.78 in cash and gi cards with our goal being $400.00. Remember, no amount is too small -- those pennies add up people! There are three more opportunies to make a donaon: the member/business partner event on September 20th; the October 23rd chapter meeng; and the half day educaonal seminar in November. Let’s finish strong to reach our goal and give those less fortunate a happy holiday season.

Finally, congratulaons to Beth Hoe who was our scholarship drawing winner. Beth will be aending the Regional conference in Ausn, Texas in October.

Sincerely,

Debbie Durbin

As many of you know, three years ago for no known reason, my son Billy began having seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. We knew Billy would have to live with this for the rest of his life. We never imagined it would take him from us at such a young age.

Someday I hope to be able to thank each one of you in person, but for now thank you to those who made a donaon to the go fund me account for the benefit of my grandchildren, Will, age 6 and Anna, age 3. Thank you to those who sent flowers, or cards, or came to the funeral home or the service. Thank you to those who have sent your thoughts and prayers. Your kindness has been overwhelming.

Many of you have asked what you can do to help. Two things come to mind. First, please connue to pray for Billy’s wife Kaitlin and their children, Will and Anna, who must now go on without the husband and daddy they loved so much. They were his world. Then if you are so inclined, Billy would be so pleased if you bought a toy for a less fortunate child during the holidays or made a contribuon to one of the above-menoned chapter iniaves. Billy’s employer has an Angel Tree each year, asking employees to provide a gi for a child during the holidays. Billy always adopted four children and bought mulple gis because he couldn’t bear the thought of his children having so much while other children had no gis to open on Christmas morning. This year Billy’s employer is going to name the Angel Tree in his honor and Will, Anna and I will adopt some children in his memory.

When you see me, don’t be afraid to talk about Billy. I might cry, but I will always be his mother and I will love him forever. I am so grateful for all of my ALA friends.

What is your current job tle and major responsibilies? Director of Operaons, Columbus Office. Manage all office staff, coordinate and direct administrave support funcons for local office; administer, support and enforce firm policies and procedures.

Give us an example of a me when you said to yourself, “Is this really in my job descripon?” To some extent I say this almost every day! One of the last things I did that really scks out in my mind was right before the holidays, we were short staffed and I needed to get the Christmas tree put up in the lobby. I dove right in and just imagined myself at home, drinking wine, listening to Christmas carols as I got the job done.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be an elementary school teacher when I was younger.

If you could plan the perfect day, what would it look like? A perfect day would be spent sing in a lounge chair at the beach, reading a good book, watching the waves, sipping some wine, followed by a really nice dinner somewhere with my husband.

What is the best thing that has ever happened to you? The best thing to ever happen to me was having my four children. They are a constant joy in my life.

What was your first job? My very first job was working retail at K-Mart. I took great pride in straightening up clothes!

Who or what had the greatest impact on your life? The person that had the greatest impact on my life was the first aorney assigned to me. He was known as “difficult to work for” and me being green in my new role said yes. He taught me so much about the law and my new job, he helped me become a great legal administrave assistant. Our professional relaonship lasted many, many years and I always look back on our years working together very fondly. I wouldn’t be where I am now without his guidance and confidence in me.

What is your favorite acvity (besides work, of course)? My favorite acvity is reading a good novel and traveling.

What would you do if you had more free me? If I had more free me I would spend it with my grandkids and do more traveling.

If you weren’t working in law firm administraon, what career would you have chosen? If I wasn’t doing what I am now, I would either be a teacher or a beaucian or a prima ballerina. We have to have goals!

Anything else you would like for us to know about you? I am married with four grown children, two grandchildren (with hopefully more in my future), and own two dogs right now (very much a dog lover)!

Innovave Markeng on a Shoestring Budget, connued from page 1

Big law firms across the naon embrace these cost-effecve principles. Whether your office is a bouque-style firm or a mega-one, you can just as easily employ the same pracces and, in turn, stand shoulder-to-shoulder with your largest competors when it comes me to pitch for new business.

Consider the following acvies, which aside from an investment of me can be completed at minimal cost. Plus, they can have a remarkable effect in growing the firm’s brand, increasing its visibility and encouraging new business opportunies.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIPIn legal markeng, demonstrang thought leadership by speaking or publishing arcles on topics that are important to clients’ business connues to be a unique and effecve way to demonstrate experse and industry awareness.

This form of content markeng involves a bit more work than creang messaging for a firm website or brochure, but the me is well spent considering the return on investment.

For instance, in addion to increasing a firm’s visibility among a publicaon’s audience, a published arcle can be leveraged to work double-me as a business development tool within the aorney’s personal network of connecons, clients and exisng markeng materials.

“Aorneys in my firm are frequent authors, and we’re always looking for low-cost opportunies to publish content in local media and relevant trade publicaons,” says Micah Uram, Markeng and Business Development Lead at Phoenix-based Lewis Roca Rothgerber Chrise.

“In addion to being seen by the publicaon’s viewership, these arcles are great sources of content which can be repurposed into blogs, client alert(s) or even talking points for speaking engagements,” says Uram. “Each of these is a great method to portray your aorneys’ experience in their specific area of pracce.”

THIRD-PARTY ENDORSEMENTSThird-party endorsements, rankings and awards can be a subtle yet powerful factor when individuals and companies are evaluang aorneys for hire.

For example, the automove and health care industries commonly run adversements featuring five-star rangs or top hospital honors. Lawyers can also parcipate in a number of rankings and

awards processes. Most don’t cost anything and can result in valuable third-party endorsements for the firm.

TRADE ASSOCIATIONS: A PERFECT “IN”In addion to membership in a local bar associaon, aorneys should consider trade associaons and their local chambers of commerce as a way to break away from the crowd and grow new relaonships with decision-makers in their target markets. However, a membership alone will not likely yield new business. Instead, aorneys should take advantage of all the opportunies that exist with this type of affiliaon, such as networking at events, joining commiees and even looking for ways to earn a leadership posion within the organizaon.

In addion to providing an opportunity to establish new relaonships, many trade associaons invite members as authors in their newsleers and speakers at their events, which are altogether different and valuable ways to make a posive impression.

E-COMMUNICATIONSThere are many ways to leverage electronic markeng materials at lile to no cost to increase a firm’s visibility and demonstrate aorney thought leadership on issues that are relevant to your own network of clients, contacts and connecons.

Among these are e-alerts, which are electronic newsleers that can be created online through one of the various low– to no-cost email markeng services. Similar to a blog, e-alerts allow you the opportunity to provide insights on issues that may be relevant to exisng and prospecve clients.

A key difference between the two, however, is that while a blog is generally a passive form of communicaon—readers must seek it out—e-alerts are proacve and allow you to send the same content by email to make certain it reaches your key audience. Addionally, e-alerts can be used to promote special events and keep your audience up to speed on developments within your firm and pracce area.

WEBSITES: THE NEW STOREFRONTDespite an abundance of opons for websites that can be had for as cheap as free, amazingly there are sll solo praconers who do not have websites. Gone are the days when an aorney’s shingle is hung on the downtown square—websites are the new storefront. Without one, clients are much harder pressed to find an aorney, let alone confirm what they may have heard from a referral source.

If your firm is without a website, seng one up should be a priority.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: BOARDS, VOLUNTEERISM AND VISIBILITYA great way to follow through on a firm’s commitment to civic involvement is by encouraging aorneys—partners and associates alike—to join a nonprofit as a board member or volunteer. Aorneys should first idenfy causes that align with their personal interests. This is a great way not only to give back, but also to create new relaonships with fellow board members in the community.

SOCIAL MEDIA: TODAY’S ROLODEXIt is crical (and completely free) for lawyers and law firms alike to be acvely involved with social media plaorms. An increasing number of consumers and business execuves factor in social media when making buying decisions.

J.D. Power and Associates’ recent finding that “the relaonship between a posive social media experience and consumer purchase intent” only adds to the argument that all lawyers who are targeng consumers should be acvely involved in this way.

If you’re in a corporate law pracce, GreenTarget recently found that “the largest concentraon of lawyers anywhere on the social web today” is found on LinkedIn. A separate Regalixstudy found that 91 percent of business-to-business markeng execuves agreed that LinkedIn was their top choice for social media markeng.

Consider various ways to increase the value of the content aorneys offer through social media plaorms, which involve more than creang an online profile—you have to actually use it, too. Here are a few easy ways to get started:

• Share links to industry media reporng that is considered can’t-miss news for clients.

• Post expert arcles that the firm’s members/partners have published in trade journals and magazines that speak to important issues related to clients’ businesses.

• Keep clients up to speed on important changes to the services the firm provides.

• Convert other valuable content the firm might have available—such as newsleers and client alerts—to blog posts in order to reach clients in a new way.

Too oen, lawyers lose sleep atnight concerned about whether they have adequately invested in markeng and business development efforts. Thankfully, these low-cost markeng techniques instead allow aorneys to invest their me rather than dollars.

These simple strategies can help ensure that exisng and potenal clients keep the firm top-of-mind when it comes me for them to retain counsel.

If the Truth be Told ...

During most all of my employee recruing, selecon, and retenon presentaons at corporate, franchise, and associaon meengs worldwide, I always encourage the aending business owners and hiring managers to create their own list of “The Top 10 Reasons People Want to Work for Us.” “Aer all,” I say, “How are the aplicants going to know why they should want to work for you if you don’t know?”

If you have done your Top 10 list, good for you. I know it gives you a definite advantage over the compeon when it comes to recruing and hiring. However, it’s come to my aenon that there can be a “dark side” to these lists as well. How manyof the following are not on your Top 10 list, but are actually true?

1. We pay as lile as we can get away with, but expect 100% from you.

2. There is no opportunity for promoon (unless you kiss up to the boss).

3. You will get no recognion for doing a great job. If you get any aenon at all, it will be the negave, unwanted kind for something we arbitrarily feel you did wrong.

4. You will be responsible for customer sasfacon and problem resoluon, but have none of the authority needed to actually do it.

5. We don’t want your input; just do as you’re told. I am the boss and I always know best.

6. We will micro manage you because we don’t believe you will do the right thing or do things right.

7. Although we talk about this being a great place to work, we have lots of employee turnover because it really isn’t.

8. This is not a family-friendly environment. Do not ask for any me off because of an important family event or, come to think of it, for any other reason either.

9. Don’t expect to have a great team to work with because, once they find out what it is really like to work here, A-players don’t sck around.

10. Don’t expect any training beyond the basics. We figure, if we train you, you’ll just take your new found learning and find a beer job.

You could use the above list as an excellent self-audit tool; especially if one of your goals is to eliminate your recruing and hiring headaches by becoming an employer-of-choice in your community.
