Carols at the CrossTuesday 23rd December 2014: 6.30pm: Old Ryton Village Green: with a local Brass Band and the singers of the Caedmon Choir. The local Bell ringers peel the bells from 6pm to welcome everyone and there is a great singsong in the Old Cross afterwards starting at about 7.30pm. There will be a collection, song sheets are provided.

This is a celebration of traditional carol singing held on Ryton Village Green each year on the last Tuesday before Christmas Eve. It Started nearly 30 years ago with a group of brass players from the Ryton based ceilidh band 'Brass Neck' playing some carols under the street lamp by the old village cross.

Each event starts with a welcoming peal of bells from the new bells in Ryton Church Tower at around six o'clock. At six-thirty the Brass Band strikes up with a short overture and then a plays a set of carols for everyone to join in. Song sheets are provided. All profits made go to St Oswald's Hospice.

Everyone is welcome

Visit: www.carolsatthecross.org.uk to download a poster for and the song sheet for this years carols.

HEALTH & FITNESS4. Cut out processed junk

This is one of the easiest ways to quickly and effectively reduce body fat, and yet it is met with such resistance. Why? Why is it so difficult for us to give up our packaged, processed snacks and treats? This is one obstacle that prevents most people from achieving the body that they want. The best tip for successfully getting processed junk food out of your life is to have wholesome alternatives on hand while removing the junk food from your home. If you are a late night snacker, then be prepared by having fresh fruit, sliced veggies, plain Greek yogurt or other wholesome snack replacements on hand. When your belly is full of wholesome snacks, it’s hard to care too much about the processed junk you missed out on. And soon you’ll learn to love how lean and energetic these healthier foods make you feel.

5. Lift weightsYou might consider this to be pretty obvious, but many people are still resistant to the idea that resistance training leads to fat loss. If you find yourself puzzled by the idea that lifting heavy things will reduce the layer of fat on your body, allow me to explain. The act of lifting weights causes those targeted muscles to stimulate new muscle tissue growth. Now this doesn’t mean that your muscles are going to get noticeably larger (relax, ladies!) but it does mean that your muscle tissue will become tighter and more toned. The increase in muscle translates to a higher metabolism, which means that your body will naturally burn fat faster and more efficiently.

6. Use HIITHigh Intensity Interval Training is a method that has been quite popular in the past decade – and for good reason. This advanced form of aerobics, when done correctly, is one of the most effective methods for burning fat. HIIT is achieved by performing short, intense burst of aerobic intervals between less intense bouts of aerobics. For example, 2 minutes of walking followed by a 30 second sprint, done for 20 minutes.

Got body fat?Today I have 6 simple ways for you to shed that unwanted body fat. While fat loss can be quite frustrating, these 7 strategies are proven to help slim down fast:

1. Drink 2-3 litres of waterWater is a crucial element for proper bodily functions, and even more so when fat loss is your goal. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver, and this process requires that you be well hydrated. Drinking water over the course of your day is a wonderful goal to aim for. This goal is easily met when you get into the habit of sipping water throughout the day, coupled with drinking a full glass before meals, upon waking and before bed.

2. Cut out alcoholThis fat loss tip is always met with groans, but despite its unpopularity it remains one of the most effective. The first reason that alcohol should be cut out in order to lose fat is that it’s filled with empty calories. These are simple sugars that taste great but add up quickly as stored fat in all the wrong places. The second reason that alcohol should be cut out is that the simple energy that your body derives from the alcohol will be used as energy long before your fat stores are tapped, making it impossible to reduce body fat on days when alcohol is consumed. That should be incentive enough for you to put down your glass and reach for some water.

3. Do a variety of aerobicsVariety is key when it comes to the aerobics side of your routine. Getting in calorie-burning activities is crucial to quickly eliminating fat stores. We no longer believe that long cardio sessions are the holy grail of fat loss – but getting your body moving with calorie-burning activities is a wonderful way to intensify your fat loss results. The great thing about aerobic activities is that these can and should be fun! Hiking, biking, swimming, surfing, jogging, brisk walking – any activity that requires you to move your body for a decent duration of time and break a nice sweat in the process.

REVIEWSCinemaDUMB & DUMBER TOReleased 19/12/14Older but none the wiser: Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return in a long-awaited sequel to the comedy classic. It’s been 20 years since Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) spoke to one another. They haven’t fallen out. It’s just that Lloyd has been playing a typically stupid prank with a very drawn-out idiotic punchline. But no matter.

The dimwit duo are back together and they’re embarking on an important quest. Harry’s discovered that he has a long-lost daughter by Fraida Felcher (Kathleen Turner).

What’s more, he needs a new kidney - which gives him another good reason for tracking her down. Trouble is that as soon as Lloyd claps eyes on a photo of Harry’s lovely daughter, he falls in love! The stage is set for another hilarious feast of numbskullery.

PENGUINS OF MADAGASGARReleased 05/12/14Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private return in ‘Penguins of Madagascar’, spinning off from the hugely successful ‘Madagascar’ series and finally giving these breakout characters their own movie.

After the events of ‘Madagascar 3’, the four Penguins are recruited by the North Wind, an elite task force dedicated to helping animals who can’t help themselves. Working with specialist undercover agents, they must stop evil octopus Dr. Octavius Brine from taking over the world.

In addition to the cast returning from previous films, ‘Penguins Of Madagascar’ introduces Benedict Cumberbatch, John Malkovich and Werner Herzog to the world of ‘Madagascar’.

DVDHERCULES – 12AReleased 01/12/14

Sword and sandal action epic directed by Brett Ratner and starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular hero. After successfully completing the twelve labours set out for him by King Eurystheus as a means of atoning for previous sinful actions, Hercules is now a legendary mercenary in Greece. Using his reputation and strength to his advantage, he is able to overcome the most powerful of enemies. However, when he is asked by the Thracian King John Hurt and his daughter to defeat a particularly savage warlord, Hercules finds himself having to endure the most difficult task set for him yet.

SPORT

The event, in its 61st year, will take place on Sunday 14 December at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, the city which staged the Commonwealth Games this summer.

Hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan, it will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC One HD.

Last year, the award was won by tennis player Andy Murray following his Wimbledon triumph.

Sports Personality will look back on a year that featured the Winter Olympics, the football World Cup, the women’s Rugby World Cup and the Ryder Cup.

Lineker said: “We had such a fantastic time in Glasgow over the summer at the Commonwealth Games and can’t wait to be back to celebrate, not only the Games, but also the many other sporting achievements that have taken place over the year.

“It’s the perfect way to end what has been an outstanding year in sport and we know that Scotland can certainly host a great celebration.”
