Grand Forks briefs

Two Calgary men have been taken into custody for allegedly taking part in robbery and confinement.

Boundary area RCMP detachments were successful in apprehending two men believed to be responsible for a rob-bery with violence at a Greenwood motel early Monday morn-ing.

Infrastructure failure

A collapsed cul-

vert under Boundary Drive in Grand Forks has caused rising wa-ter levels in neigh-bouring homes and concern from city staff.

Officials had been made aware of the problem when af-fected residents ex-pressed concerns about high water tables north of Cen-tral Avenue and along 17th Street in an envi-ronmentally sensitive wetland area.

Chris Buckley has a recipe for a great New Year’s dip: Take a plunge into the near-freezing waters of the Columbia River.

With less than two weeks to work up the courage, Buck-ley, a corporal with the 44th Engineer Squadron, has ex-tended an icy invita-tion for those who are in need of an eye opening event for New Year’s Day with the annual polar bear swim.

Nearly 150 people showed up last year for a dip, said Buck-ley, with almost 500 on the shore huddled near the re. e water will be above freezing, he said, with temperatures expect-ed to be around six degrees C.

e dip started 26 years ago when seven members of the 44 Engineer Squadron decided to jump into the river.

ey kept up the tradition and word of mouth spread while friends and relatives began showing up.

It turned into an annual event, orga-nized by Master War-rant O cer Shar-man omas until

two years ago when Buckley took over.

e community event invites all ages to dive in, although Buckley guarantees there’s no pressure.

“No one’s going to be there to throw you in or anything—if you just want to go up to your ankles, that’s ne too,” he said.

Emergency service workers will be on site, just in case, and the re department will have its rescue boat in the river.

 e 26th annual

Greater Trail Polar Bear Swim occurs on New Year’s Day at Gyro Park, manda-tory registration be-ginning at 10:15 a.m. until 11:50 a.m. that day.

 e swim itself be-gins with a bang at 12 p.m. sharp.

A er the swim, hot chocolate and a bon- re will await par-ticipants along with a pile of prizes to be drawn.

Costumes are op-tional but bathing suits are mandatory.

Footwear and extra warm clothing are advised.

Contact Buckley at [email protected] to register or for more information.

For those about to shiver... TIMOTHY SCHAFERWest Kootenay Advertiser

More than 150 people took the icy plunge at Trail’s Gyro Park on New Year’s Day 2012. Organizers are planning for an even bigger turnout for the 2013 dip.

Trail news

A new provincial cost sharing formu-la for reducing the threat of wildfires has not sparked the in-terest of the regional district.

Larry Gray, chair of the Regional Dis-trict of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board of directors, said the new program does address some funding concerns, but it does not go far enough to deal with the major issue facing governments like the RDKB.

Gray said the for-mula contains no provision for wildfire mitigation on private property and man-aged forest lands.

“And many of our communities are sur-rounded, almost ex-clusively, by privately held lands,” he said.

The new cost-shar-ing formula for oper-ational fuel reduction treatments means the province will pay 90 per cent of the proj-ect cost, with an an-nual cap of $400,000 for municipalities and an annual cap of $600,000 for regional districts.

The remaining 10 per cent of costs can be an in-kind con-tribution (e.g. staff time) or a cash pay-ment from the mu-nicipality or regional district making the application.

Previously, the ini-tiative provided 90 per cent of the proj-ect funding up to $100,000 and 75 per cent of the remaining cost, up to a maxi-mum of $400,000 per year.

Gray was also ada-mant the regional dis-trict taxpayers should not have to pay any of the 10 per cent of the costs for mitigation on Crown land.

“We have some concern about that, that the property re-ally belongs to the government,” he said. “Should the taxpayers be paying money to

do the mitigation on Crown lands when they are really owned by the provincial gov-ernment?”

Game scarce

With the West Kootenay hunting season largely in the bag there wasn’t much in the bag for hunters who trekked out into the backcountry, says the president of the

Trail Wildlife Asso-ciation.

Terry Hanik said a sparse population of deer—both white tail and mule—con-tributed to a lean year for those looking to

put venison into the freezer this winter.

He pointed to a Dec. 2 meeting of the West Kootenay Outdoorsmen—that includes clubs from Castlegar, Nelson,

Nakusp, West Arm, Trail, Creston and Grand Forks—where the tale of the one that never appeared was a common theme as hunters region-wide noted the deer

count was down. The low count is

concerning hunt-ers across the region, said Hanik, as they wonder how to re-establish the natural balance.

What’s New with What’s Old?

Part of an ongo-ing look at local items trading on eBay.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, local sternwheelers issued lithographed Christmas and New Year’s cards, usually with a picture of the boat, list of the crew, and sometimes a poem. Today they’re highly coveted by col-lectors.

A few have sold online in recent years, most recently one this month from the SS Kootenay, dating to 1897, that drew eight bids and went for $162.50 US.

The front bears the CPR’s checkered flag and says “Wishing you a merry Christ-mas and a prosperous new year” in brown lettering. The inside says “With the com-pliments of the cap-

tain and officer on SS Kootenay, Nakusp, BC, Xmas 1897.”

The opposite page lists the crew: Master W.E. Nesbitt, purser

A.W. Shiels, chief en-gineer J.E. Jeffcott, pilot P. Wilson, first

officer E.C. Bridge-man, second engineer J. Johnston, freight clerk Fred B. Wright, steward William Dy-son, express messen-ger J.G. Millard, and bar manager J.S. By-ron.

The seller was in Fort Gratiot, Mich.

A Victoria seller sold three such cards in September 2005. The first, also from the SS Kootenay, but dated 1904, sold for $141 US. An 1898 New Year’s card from the SS Nakusp went for $152.50 US, and a 1902 New Year’s card from the SS Moyie sold for $101 US.

Finally, a 1901 Christmas card from the SS Rossland, signed by first offi-cer Walter H. Wright netted $103.50 US in 2009. It came in its original envelope, which showed it was addressed to an Al-fred Trowbridge of Portland.

• Other old Christ-mas cards of note: one showed a view of Nel-son from across the lake in 1900. It was sent to Maisie Spinks, whose husband Wil-liam was a longtime lawyer and county court judge.

It sold in 2006 for $14.50 US.

Another undated Nelson card with an interesting bird’s eye view of the railway yard came out of an estate sale in Deer Lodge, Montana. It sold in 2005 for $10 US. The inside has a Christmas poem and is signed “Will and Lissie.”

•  An ink blotter that sold in 2006 for $13 US bore a Christ-mas message from Nelson’s J.M. Ludwig, “Harness, saddlery, trunks, suitcases and travelling bags.”

Ludwig’s busi-ness was at 340 Bak-er Street, presently Booksmyth and Koo-tenay Exchange.

It’s a new way of curling - a new way of being able to get involved. Friday morning, December 7, was the rst ever Stick Curling mini spiel in Castlegar.

It is a more inclu-sive way to curl that is hitting rinks across the nation. Although it’s been going on in Ontario for a while, like everything else, it takes a while for new ways of doing things to catch on.

Bob Malo , man-ager of the Castlegar Curling Club, point-ed out the stick curl-ing expert, and long-time curler, Alex Bojey, who is well-versed in the rules. “First of all,” says Bo-jey, “there’re only two players on a team of stick curling, and it’s very popular right through Canada – in fact, there’s a bon-spiel, e Canadian Open Stick Curling in Ontario next April 13th, 2013.” Contin-ues Bojey, “Anybody can join in – it’s quite di erent from the regular game.

“In a regular game you have four play-ers and they all throw two rocks. In this game you only have two players, one at each end; like, ‘the team’ is only two people…and they play against another

couple. “And instead

of throwing two rocks like a regular game, they throw (or push) six rocks and the game lasts six ends. Nobody walks back and forth (between the ends, as in reg-ular curling). e only thing going back and forth is the rock. Also, the game is much faster, but you score the same way.”

And, im-portantly, it’s a much safer way of curling, especially with older people. But, if anyone, young or ex-perienced, has had hip or knee or foot trouble, this is an ex-cellent way to go. As regards equipment, you only need grip-pers on your shoes, no sliders needed, which greatly lessens the chances of drop-ping to the ice.

Says Alex of the game, “We’re actually making history here today in Castlegar.

It’s a better game for people who nd it hard to get down on the ice…and people in wheelchairs can easily play this game – now they’re includ-

ed. So, we’ll try it out and see what hap-pens. Today we have 18 players. If interest continues, we might try to have it one day a week.”

ere are tryouts for B.C. now, too, with this new format - a team from Arm-strong won the Cana-dian Open in 2011.

Just for the record, the game called “Stur-ling” is the same kind of game but slightly

di erent rules, ie, the whole team is not held to everyone us-ing the stick; it can have various com-binations of sticks and regular throw-ing. Also, equipment would be di erent.

Like anything new, people need to try out improved ways and ideas or they won’t continue.

is new way of curling seems like it would be an obvi-

ous way to go. On this morning it was the guys who whole-heartedly showed up – not a gal in sight, but it is very bene -cial for all.

At the moment though, it is the men who largely use the stick, with only one woman preferring it.

Says Alex “I have a sore knee, so that’s why I use the stick – it’s the only way I go now.”

Rossland was in full Christmas cheer last Sunday night, from the brightly lit down-town where snow has been falling, to the ski hill where happy ski-ers are meeting one powder day after an-other. Down the road at the entrance of town, residents were becoming even mer-rier as the monthly Joe Hill Coffeehouse took on a Christ-mas aspect, with acts

ranging from guitar and percussion, to full choir numbers.

Attendance looked to be the best so far in this season for the coffeehouse which started up again in the fall.

The monthly show features a variety of acts, and part of the fun in going is not knowing which lo-cal band or act might show up last minute or what a newcomer might bring to the performance.

Les Carter, who is

organizing the show, said earlier that they had been gearing up for a special show, and it was.

It began with the Rossland Glee Club

doing some Christ-mas-themed songs, followed by No Frets, which includes many young violinists and a chance to see how much they have im-

proved.Next up was the

Foggy Goggle Boys, with some guitar, mandolin and vocals.

Then Paul Bowles read poetry which

related to things like 2012 and his encoun-ter with a bear near Warfield. Bowles fol-lowed each poem with some rhythm playing.

Dawn Graham sang some Christmas-inspired selections, the last of which re-ceived a standing ova-tion.

The night finished off on a lighter note as Wendy Garby on vo-cals, Carter on guitar and Andrew Bennett on fiddle played a few Christmas songs.

Carter said the cof-feehouse is a great venue.

“Musicians who would otherwise be cynical about things like playing at a bar, (enjoy) playing at Joe Hill because the au-dience is appreciative and listens,” he said. “A lot of the audience are musicians. It’s a nice place to play, has great sound.”

The Joe Hill Cof-feehouse is the third Sunday of each month at the Miners’ Hall in Rossland.

A full and festive playbill is played out at Joe Hill CoffeehouseArne PetryshenWest Kootenay Advertiser

Natural Resource Officers (NRO) will assist the current con-servation officer in maintaining environ-mental legislation and public education in Grand Forks.

Due to changes to provincial legislation, Compliance and En-forcement staff have been designated as NROs to help enforce environmental and natural resource laws.

Under the new legislation, the posi-tion of NRO is also designated as Special Conservation Offi-cers, Land Officers, BC Park Rangers and

Fisheries Inspectors, and have the authority to enforce related leg-islation.

NRO Connie Her-man noted there are now two natural re-source officers in the Grand Forks area.

“We will be able to assist the current con-servation officer (Dave Webster) with minor issues such as enforc-ing open burning stat-utes and some water issues,” she said. “We have narrow responsi-

bilities within the new legislation.”

Herman added they are able to deal with issues such as illegal structures or occupa-tion of Crown land, dangerous wildlife and control of animal attractants, and altera-tions to foreshores or riparian areas of lakes and streams.

There are currently 156 NROs working in the field around the province doing inspections and con-ducting various inves-tigations.

For questions or concerns, use the Re-port All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) number at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).

of Learning (NOL) hosted an informa-tion meeting on Dec. 18 to discuss the school closure pro-cess at Rossland Sec-ondary School.

The committee provided details on the process, as well as information on ways get input to the school district.

There will then be the School District Rossland Public Fo-rum on Jan. 15 at the Rossland Secondary gym at 6:30 p.m.

Jennifer Ellis, from the Neighbourhood of Learning commit-tee, said she hopes Rossland can get in-volved, as it is a very important time for the city and there is only a short amount of time to get submis-

sions in. The district will take written sub-missions until Jan. 4.

Winter Carnival With winter here

in full-force, plan-ning for the Rossland Winter Carnival is al-ready well underway. Events are already moving into position on the carnival’s new website, www.ross-landwintercarnival.com. This year is the 116th anniversary of the first carnival, first held in Rossland back in 1897.

Organizer Lisa We-gner said this year will also be special because of the down-town revitalization, which will make more room for both the spectators and participants of events like the Winter Carni-val parade.

Input welcome on Rossland

tions Health Coun-cil, signed a Health Partnership Accord Dec. 17 re-affirming their commitment for a better health sys-tem for First Nations in B.C. The Health

Partnership Accord is a commitment of the British Columbia Tripartite Framework Agreement on First Nation Health Gov-ernance (Framework Agreement) signed by

the parties in October 2011.

The Framework Agreement is guid-ing the transfer of responsibility for de-sign and delivery of all federally funded

Trail Regional PETS on PARADEThe holidays are for sharing, and if you have an animal lover on your gift list, what better way to honour them than with a gift that helps animals in need? The BC SPCA has lots of great gift-giving ideas that will warm the hearts of pet lovers and make a life-saving difference for homeless and abused animals.

Pawsitive Gifts. Give a gift of puppy care, wildlife rescue, cat sheltering or horse rehabilitation – there are many ways to make a big difference. Send your gift with a printable or e-card.

Stocking stuffers and gifts. Visit the Trail Regional BC SPCA for unique clothing, pet gear, calendars and other great merchandise for the animal lover in your life.

Guardian Angel. Become a Guardian Angel to one special animal. With your gift send special requests for belly rubs and other care and help your chosen animal get adopted with your personal message of support.

Kids Club memberships. A BC SPCA Kids Club membership is the perfect gift for children 13 and under and costs just $15. It includes a membership card, activity guide, a subscription to our youth magazine, Bark!, monthly e-newsletters and chances to win prizes and discounts at BC SPCA youth events. Through the Kids Club young people learn about animal care and making a difference for animals.

Cash or Wish List donations. All local shelters except cash donations which can also be made in honour of an individual and a special card will be sent to that person. Also excepted are donations of items on their wish list such as: Towels, wet food, toys, treat, bedding, cleaning supplies, of ce supplies, etc.

From all the staff and animals at the Trail Regional BC SPCA we would like to wish all a special holiday season and best wishes for the New Year.

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASONThe holidays are a time for festive decorations and special treats, but some of these seasonal items can be hazardous for your pets. Here are some tips to keep your pet safe and happy this holiday season:

No Bones Please: Avoid giving bones to your dogs or cats, particularly turkey bones. Poultry bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations; Healthy Treats: Chocolate and other sweets should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs, though not harmful to humans. The best thing you can do for your pets over the holidays is to keep them on their regular diet. Look for special animal treats instead of giving your animals cookies or sweets meant for people; Poisonous Plants: Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals including mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper and Christmas rose. Re-member to keep these plants out of reach of pets - especially birds. Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or people. This has been a long-standing rumour perpetuated for decades. Having said this, some pets, that have a sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant, may get diarrhea or even vomit if they consume parts of a poinsettia;  Avoid Tinsel: If you have a Christmas tree and pets, you have a recipe for trouble. First, make sure the tree is well secured. Try to place decora-tions above paw height and use string to hang the bulbs instead of hooks, which are easily dislodged. If possible, use nonbreakable ornaments. Avoid using tinsel or angel hair. Cats and dogs will ingest both, which can cause intestinal problems. Cords for lights should be made inaccessible to pets - especially from chewing puppies and exploring kittens. Keep in mind that the chemicals added to the water reservoir of your Christmas tree to keep your tree living longer won’t do the same for your pet. The chemicals are toxic to animals, so keep the reservoir covered; Choking Hazards in Toys: Avoid purchasing pet toys with small or soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones. Be sure to inspect pet toys regularly and discard deteriorating ones.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)The time has come for the rock to roll. Okay, bad pun but it serves to illustrate the verb in your vibe. Change is upon you whether you would have it or not! The good news is that, as said you are on a roll. It is time to graduate, to advance to the next level. There is no turning back. Get excited, get creative and get going!

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)Some cycles are bigger, deeper, more intense and or involved and passionate than others, like the current one. A steady deepening of commitments with a long-term focus on the future is featured. Yet rather than feel contracted, you feel expan-sive, exuberant and willing. Yes, the work load is heavier than it used to be but you are okay with that. Go gure!

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)While the focus remains on health and strengthening your overall constitution and/or fortifying your base continues, you want to get out, to play. Meeting new people is in the mix. Experiencing the unexpected with people has been a standing theme for a while and you are ready for a change that way. Expect to take new leads this week.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Oh to be free of fear and worry. It sounds easy, so why isn’t it? Too much thinking is the classic issue. Some would say excess lower mind, that of the ego. Worry can be interpreted as caring, but it actually does not help much, if at all. Practicing being present in the moment with ‘what is’, is the classic solution. Genuine gratitude for life helps and meditation is the real deal.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Your world is opening up in new and exciting ways. With the crack in the door and the light coming in you are wise to do what it takes to swing it wide open. Laying claim to latent gifts and talents meanwhile, is stirring at deeper levels. These require vision and courage. If you are having trouble seeing this light, seek counsel and do it now!

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)A dynamic learning curve continues and the lessons are coming from all angles, some unexpected. The time is right to irt with new possibilities. The tried and true, at least in some areas, is beginning to lie. Since two wrongs don’t equal right, your best option is to redirect your focus towards more truthful, stable and reliable sources.

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)It is said that the karmic lords never sleep and they never forget. Life knows who we are, what is owed to us and what we owe. Graceful acceptance of the dues and penalties as well as the rewards is a sign of true wisdom. Reaction, blame and self-pity only serve to deepen the suffering. Fortunately, the light of a new day is steadily growing.

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)A pioneering mood is lingering. You have been seeking new answers, insights and leads. Now you may have to contend with deciphering which ones are the best. The likely answer is: those that stand to reach furthest into the future. The best choices usually involve a tight weave between health and a genuine sense of service, which is truly a privilege to render.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)You are in the mood to enter new territory. Yet, you may feel both called within and without. To reconcile this con ict consider the famous lyrics, ‘you gotta get in to get out’. Listening to your inner voice and heeding its urgings is the ageless wisdom. Be extra careful of excessive logic now. To trust your feelings, acknowledge them and feel your silent truth.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)The returns for many of your past efforts are rolling in now. Hopefully they are the kind you want. You may feel the need for some time out to manage the ow effectively. Be deliberate and concise with your communications, unless the exchange is deep, sincere and valuable. Your ability to make ne distinctions now is at a peak, make the most of it.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)You are in the mood to cut loose, get away, break free. A creative diversion might help. Yet, you may feel duty bound and restricted. How can you take good care of yourself in this stressful cycle? Patience is one way. The coming New Moon cycle will bring some needed relief. That is in one week. Accept this time as one of building character.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)Getting the attention you feel you want and deserve is a current focus. A learning curve is implied. Perhaps you need to increase your social media skills or learn how to ask for a raise. Either way, it is important that you be pro-active and give to the situation. Your con dence levels should be rising steadily these days so ride that wave!

Horoscope for the Week December 21, 2012Horoscope for theTip of the Week: Happy Solstice, the most celebrated one ever! A new round of the 5125 Year Long Count Calendar begins, and this is the 1st of 5…. Is it any wonder why the Classical Mayan Astronomer/Astrologers Priests, the venerated ‘Keepers of Time’ considered this the ‘most signi cant event in human history’? That this ‘Great Cycle’ begins and ends with Winter solstice is due to the deep respect given to the cycle of the Sun. Though it plays the role of the ‘seconds hand on the clock’, its quality far outweighs its quantity as a measurement of time. Hardly a mere object in the sky, the Sun may best be understood as the nucleus, the brain center, of the ‘galactic cell’ of the solar system. With the Helio Pause and Bow Shock literally forming the skin membrane of the solar system, this is more than a metaphor. From this perspective, we actually live in the expanded body of the sun! This holistic perception of reality reveals wholes within ever greater wholes. From cells to bodies to families, communities, regions, towns, cities, provinces states, countries, continents, planets, solar systems, galaxies, and the universe itself, each level is whole within ever greater wholes. This holistic world view reveals a self-evident order and intelligent design woven into the very fabric of existence. In this regard, we recognize ourselves, humanity, our planet and all the species upon it to be signi cant ‘parts of’ life. This re-wakened realization frees us from the purely linear, materialistic model that sees us as ‘apart from’ life, and therefore separate and vulnerable. The deepest reaches of science have worked hard to prove the timeless postulations of mystics - that division and separation are ultimately illusions of empirical perception. Rejoice, a great new cycle has begun and a new yet ancient world view is born anew. What a wonderful Gift. P.S. Merry Christmas!
