GALLERY 2’S ANNUAL WINE-TASTING EVENT A SELLOUT

The Grand Forks Art Gallery Society’s 24th Annual Wine Tasting was a sell-out as usual, with 225 people vying for tickets to the prestigious event. Fourteen wineries and two breweries were represented this year, along with regional food and coffee presenters. Pictured is a rep-resentative from the Oliver Twist Estate Winery of Oliver, B.C. Harpist Jennifer Fenn performed upstairs in the beautifully decorated gallery, an historical building; a special thank you goes to Bill Fedoriw of Grand Forks, who donated some 50 hours to the gallery creating two vignettes for the stairwells. The event concluded with safe rides home offered by the grad class of 2016.

During rehearsals for Kiesza’s gala perfor-mance at Selkirk College’s Mary Hall this past weekend, the global pop star urged music student Ash Pearce to come forward to the lip of the stage and “own her solo.”

“Kiesza is a great songwriter, she produces great songs, but what really sets her apart is she’s a great person who knows how to relate to people,” Selkirk College’s Bob Hall told the Star.

“And this is what’s going to stick out to me forever: this gal Ash, she seems a little shy. She wants to be in the background and she’s a great guitarist. All of a sudden Kiesza tells her ‘you need to come up front and own this solo’. She told her ‘you have to be a guitar God’.”

When Hall saw the final performance at Mary Hall on Saturday evening, he was thrilled to see Pearce giving it her all.

“She came to tell students how to be suc-cessful and what it’s like. She came to touch lives, and she did that with this individual.”

And Pearce wasn’t the only one who ben-efitted from Kiesza’s personal attention.

“During the rehearsal the band was just

sort of jamming, and suddenly she appeared from backstage while they were performing her song and she joined right in. It was so raucous as soon as she came in, the level of their performance immediately went up, and it was totally improvised. She was singing along, jumping up and down.”

Not only leading by example, on Friday af-ternoon the pop star sat down in Shambhala Hall to talk music along with her dog Ginga, who was startled by the applause and had to wait outside.

“There has never been a better time to make it as a musician,” she said.

“But you have to learn how to really love working hard.”

Selkirk music instructor Gilles Parenteau praised his former student, who he per-formed with on Good Morning America ear-lier this year. He praised Kiesza’s work ethic and encouraged them to follow her example.

“Who here knows who’s charting?” Kiesza asked, to only a smattering of hands. “All of you should know exactly who’s charting at all times. You should be looking at this stuff daily. If you don’t know what’s popular, then how can you hope to be successful?”

She had strong words for anyone who

doesn’t consider pop music “real music”.

“It is real music. And that’s the sort of attitude that will get you nowhere. When you get out into the industry it’s about who will work hard, who will show up for rehearsal on time, and if you go into a room acting like you’re better than everyone you’re not going to make it far.”

Kiesza was in town with her parents, and posted a number of Kootenay images to her Instagram account. She flew in Tuesday from New York City then left again Monday morning.

“A big part of Kiesza’s intent in coming was to reconnect with Nelson,” he said.

Hall was amazed that during an autograph signing Kiesza refused to leave until she’d greeted each and everybody in line.

“She said ‘I’m going to see every single person in this lineup’. For her the last person in the lineup is more important to her than the first person, and she has that same energy from the first person right to the last. She hugged every person, spelled out the kids’ names—correctly—and that’s not easy to do in

Nelson.”T h a t

afternoon she performed her viral single “Hideaway” as well as a rousing cover of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” before inviting two birthday girls on the stage.

“She had identified two birthday girls in the audience and she had everyone sing happy birthday. Those girls will never forget something like that.”

A group of model train afi-cionados are once again putting their passion on display for shop-pers at Trail’s Waneta Plaza.

“The kids love it the first time they see it, and it makes a good babysitter for dads, when the moms are out shopping,” chuck-led Bob Flegel, one of the found-ers of the Golden City Railway Modellers. “But a lot of people are still finding out about our spot in the mall.”

Among the variety of amaz-ing displays is a detailed replica of Rossland during the railroad heydays.

It took plenty of research over four years, steady hands and oc-casionally a magnifying glass be-fore retirees Bob Flegel and Don Young finished the historical model of Rossland and the trains that chugged through town until the 1950s.

Since completing the Alpine City replica in 2010, the model has traveled to Edmonton and Kamloops twice, Calgary, and up

the hill to Rossland three times for the city’s fall fair.

“In Edmonton we won second place twice,” said Flegel. “Lego won first, some of those models are really something to see. But wherever we take it, people love it and it has also won the popular vote.”

The modellers began con-struction of the Rossland replica in the back room of a wine shop. By 2009, business and space be-

came an issue and the project was ready to move.

That’s when Linda McDiarmid, Waneta Mall man-ager, stepped in and made them an offer to use the empty space next to the children’s ballroom.

Since then, the club meets twice a week in the food court to shoot the breeze and maintain the display that is open to the public Wednesday and Saturday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Model railroaders set up in Waneta Plaza

SHERI REGNIERWest Kootenay Advertiser

Bob Flegel, a founding member of the Golden City Railway Modellers, has a keen interest in trains and the history of Rossland. The group’s detailed replica of Rossland and the railroad that chugged through, is on display alongside seasonal 3D vignettes at Waneta Plaza.

The Castlegar and District Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Light Up event on Friday, Dec. 4.

The event will be held at the Castlegar Health Centre from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise money for the centre.

“We’re going to be decorating the main lobby and we’re going to have our gold thermometer up there, and hopefully will be getting it to rise in figures,” said Stefanie Zaytsoff, CDHF office manager.

Money raised will go towards reno-vations to the medication room in the

Emergency Department. The medication room needs to have,

you know, a proper mixing space, it needs to have proper storage, and we haven’t done any renovations to that par-ticular area for a long time,” said Cheryl Whittleton, Interior Health’s community integrated health service administrator. “So you know there’s standards that we have to meet, and you know, recogniz-ing that we’re moving ahead to bring the storage of medications up to that standard.”

Any additional fund raised this year will go towards areas of greatest need.

Directors will be on hand at the event

to chat and there will be examples of pur-chases from previous years’ events.

Last year the foundation raised over $14,000 towards a new VAC Therapy system.

“That’s a machine that helps patients that have complex wounds,” explains Whittleton.

There will be coffee, cider and goodies for those who stop by.

Donations can be made on the spot, online at castlegarhospitalfoundation.org or by mail at 709 10 St., Castlegar, BC, V1N 2H7. The foundation will be col-lecting donations through January and official tax receipts will be issued by mail.

GRADS HOST POPULAR CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR

The Christmas Craft Fair held at Grand Forks Secondary School is Grand Forks’ largest and is a fundraiser for the current graduation class. This year’s event held Saturday was busy from the time the doors opened right through until closing. The Class of 2016 also hosted a large raffle with items donated by vendors. The grads, the vendors, the shoppers—everyone benefited from this popular fundraiser.

The sole aim of the Boundary’s Community Christmas Hamper Program is to make the holiday season just a little bit brighter for families in need.

The program covers an area from Christina Lake to Bridesville. There are pick-up spots in the West Boundary: Evangel Church in Greenwood, The Bridge in Midway and Petro-Can in Rock Creek. The program sets out to provide food for three satisfying holiday meals on Christmas Day, some socks, mitts, hats, toothpaste, toothbrushes and floss for every person who applies for a hamper.

There is no one specific sponsor of this community group. People are invited to be workers on teams that put on fundraisers throughout the year. Businesses gener-ously donate to the cost of purchasing

food for the hampers, and special groups and ordinary people alike donate as well in the spirit of giving. Every cent raised is spent right here in the Boundary.

Volunteers pre-pack vegetables, eggs and margarine and another group of vol-unteers packs the food items into the hamper boxes. The program also provides specialty foods for people with food sen-sitivities so that no one is forgotten. Yet another group of volunteers coordinate the donated toys with the wish list on the hamper sheets. Others aid people in pick-ing up their hampers or delivering those hampers for those who cannot get out to do so.

Many people feel that the Community Christmas Hamper Program is part of the Boundary Community Food Bank and this is not so. People register for the hampers at the food bank and Whispers

of Hope and various service agencies in town, but that is the extent of their in-volvement. The Gospel Chapel generously allows program volunteers to use their kitchen for fundraisers and pre-packing of food, and the use of their fellowship hall to set up foods, pack and then organize the hampers ready for pick up or delivery.

It takes many kind-hearted individuals and groups to oversee and make success-ful the assembling of nearly 300 hampers each year. The Community Christmas Hamper program gets an incredible out-pouring of support from local businesses and individuals to help make these ham-pers the nutritious and fun gifts to families in need.

It truly is a community working to-gether to bring comfort, some tangible love and support to those less fortunate at Christmas time.

Toronto artist shows work from the Boundary

Titled “Before the Fire”, the most recent exhibit of works by Toronto multi-media artist Fred Franzen, opened on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Toronto’s Rebecca Gallery.

Inspired by the Boundary country of British Columbia this exhibition “is dedicated to the people of the val-ley that lost their homes and belonging during August of 2015.” Adds Franzen, “My work reflects what was and what will be again.”

While staying in the Boundary this past summer Franzen, who has, in his extensive ca-reer, worked with many communities in Canada and abroad to create community art, hosted a Painting Party at the Westbridge Community Hall.

A number of resi-dents and summer visitors brought their creative energy and im-mersed themselves in working (and having fun) together making an innovative, abstract community map using a large sheet of recy-cled plywood, smooth creamy-textured dry-wall mud and lots of colour. Every detail was included, particularly locating the homes of everyone from Rock

Creek to Westbridge. The final work was do-nated to the Westbridge Community Hall.

Franzen created many water-colour sketches of the valley and in his Toronto stu-dio he later copied sev-eral of those sketches onto large canvasses. The work titled “Gold Mountain Pink” — a view looking south of Zamora on the Trans Canada Trail towards the Provincial Park — was displayed in the window of the gallery and instantly snapped up.

To coincide with the opening of Franzen’s exhibit in Toronto, his friend and host Rosemary Phillips, now of Grand Forks, pre-sented the Westbridge Community Hall with a series of framed pho-tos of the painting party and of the printed in-vitation to the exhibit which runs from Nov. 21 until Dec. 19.

Says Franzen, “The opening was wonder-ful, a great gathering. Accompanying the ex-hibit there is a portfolio of photos and clippings of before and after the Rock Creek fire. Some people knew of it, some didn’t. The whole event was very worthwhile.”

For more informa-tion about Franzen and the exhibit, visit www.rebeccagallery.com.

One hundred twenty-second in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names

Many theories exist about how Midway got its name.

To begin with, Midway was previ-ously known as Eholt’s, Boundary City, and Boundary Creek. The first of these was in honour of Louis Eholt (1840-1911), who pre-empted the future town-site around 1884 and for whom a Boundary rail-way junction was later named.

Eholt’s was first mentioned in a letter from land surveyor J.P. Burnyeat to the com-missioner of lands and works dated December 1891 and quoted in Grand Forks: The First 100 Years: “A wagon road exists from Eholt’s to Grande Prairie, 25 miles, but on American territory … there is a deep gulch and, in my opinion, affords a good pass for a wagon road, connecting Eholt’s and Osoyoos with Grande Prairie on the Canadian side …”

A post office applica-tion was filed on Sept. 7, 1893 as Boundary City, but when the office opened on Jan. 1, 1894, it was called Boundary Creek.

In 1893, Capt. Robert C. Adams of Montreal purchased the prop-erty and had a town-site laid out. By some accounts, it was called Midway from the get-go while others say it was Boundary City first and renamed Midway the following year.

In any case, Adams’ rationale for the name was explained in the Boundary Creek Times of Dec. 26, 1896, but only rediscovered a few years ago by Al Donnelly of the Boundary Historical Society:

“Capt. Adams … says he puzzled for days thinking of a name that would be both suitable and catching. What he wanted was a name easy to pronounce and easy to remember, but to name a town is not so easy a task after all. Those who know Capt. Adams, however, also know that even in a matter of this kind he would employ origi-nal methods — and he certainly did. He went straight through Webster’s Unabridged till he came to the letter M — how long it took him he does not say — and Midway immedi-ately struck his fancy.

“It was short and had a pleasing sound; moreover it expressed distinctly two ideas topographically and geographically correct; The town is exactly in the centre of the whole district, and is also the midway point be-tween the Rocky and the Selkirk ranges. So the town was called Midway accordingly.”

(This doesn’t make sense, however — Midway is to the west of both the Rockies and the Selkirks.)

A petition was sub-mitted to postal author-ities on April 4, 1894 re-questing the post office be renamed Midway. The change took effect on Nov. 1.

Subsequently, others found additional rea-

sons why Midway was an appropriate name. In a 1905 letter to the Geographic Survey of Canada, postmaster Edward A. Hain sug-gested Midway was named “on account being about as nearly possible halfway, or midway, between the then-nearest point of railway communica-tion, namely Marcus on US side, and Penticton on Canadian side, where early prospectors had to get their sup-plies.”

R.A. Brown in a separate letter to the Geographic Survey sug-gested it was “named on account of it being halfway between Grand Forks and Osoyoos Lake.”

The Midway Advance of Dec. 11, 1899 wrote: “The town was named Boundary City but because of Boundary Falls a new name was required. Capt. Adams eventually decided upon Midway, as the town is approximately midway between the

Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.”

The BC Centennial Directory of 1967 sug-gested: “Being at about the halfway mark on the Dewdney trail passing through it, Boundary City soon was generally referred to as Midway. Eventually the name stuck simply because it avoided confusion with the other smelter town of Boundary Falls …”

According to the 2001 Boundary Visitors Guide: “Generally ac-cepted is the theory that the village lies midway between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. The other is that it’s midway be-tween heaven and hell!”

There’s also the no-tion that Capt. Adams was influenced by Midway Plaisance, the Chicago park at the centre of amusements during the 1893 World’s Fair, which resulted in midway becoming a by-word for fairs and carni-vals. While this sounds plausible, it did not ap-pear in print until 1945

in Rupert W. Haggen’s Origin of Place Names in Boundary District manuscript.

Midway incorporat-ed as a village in 1967.

Holiday shopping can be both fun and hec-tic. While it’s fun to scour stores looking for can’t-miss gifts for your loved ones, shopping amongst the crowds also can prove hectic.

While online shopping has made depart-ment stores somewhat less crowded come the holiday season, the National Retail Federation notes that online shopping dur-ing the 2014 holiday season accounted for just one-sixth of all holiday shopping. The opportunity to see and feel potential gifts in person compels many people to do the majority of their holiday shopping in-store, and there are ways for such shoppers to avoid the holiday shopping rush as they begin their quests for the perfect gifts.

· Shop during off-peak hours. Weekends and weeknight evenings tend to be the busiest times to go holiday shopping. Professionals who have weekends off may put off their shopping during the week, choosing to do so on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when they have extra time to browse and com-parison shop. Shopping off-peak hours, such as during weekday mornings or even early mornings on weekends, is a great way to avoid crowds. Parents of young children might want to take a morning or even a full day off of work to get their holiday shopping done so they can avoid shopping with their kids in tow. You can probably move around more quickly if you choose to shop while the kids are in school, and this also affords you time to find gifts for the kids.

· Make a list. Knowing what you want to buy online can decrease the amount of time you

spend wandering around malls and stores. The longer you linger without an idea of what to buy, the greater the chance you will be joined by fellow shoppers. If possible, call stores before you leave the house to confirm if they have certain items in stock, or buy items online from retailers who offer an in-store pickup option. Checkout lines for in-store pickup items are often separated from more traditional checkout lines, further reducing your risk of waiting in long lines.

· Shop local businesses. Small local busi-nesses may not boast the inventory of larger retailers you’re liable to encounter at the mall, but local small businesses tend to deal with thinner crowds than national stores during the holiday season. Items in such businesses may be more unique than items sold at nationwide retailers, and when you shop at smaller businesses, you likely won’t be forced to hunt for parking spots or wait on long checkout lines.

· Start shopping early. Crowds only grow bigger and more impatient between Black Friday and the final days before Christmas, so shoppers who can find the time to shop before the height of the shopping season might find parking lots and checkout lines more to their liking. In addition, shopping early affords shoppers more time to find the best deals.

The holiday shopping rush hits full swing in the weeks before Christmas Day, but there are many ways shoppers can get their shop-ping done and avoid the crowds at the same time.

How to avoid the holiday shopping rush

Holiday Ideas

Christmas decorations, Christmas Trees, Gi s and MORE!

Mantles adorned with garland and other holiday trinkets make fireplaces come alive for Christmas. That magic is only enhanced by hanging Christmas stockings, which are just waiting to be filled with goodies for good girls and boys. Those without a fireplace often hang stockings from windowsills and stairway banisters.

No written record exists to explain the origin of hanging stockings on fireplace mantles. Despite this, many people link the tradition to a tale about St. Nicholas. As that story goes, St. Nicholas was trav-eling through a village when he over-heard the plight of three women. They were poor, and their father could not af-ford an ample dowry to marry them off. Rather than have them end up spinsters, St. Nicholas secretly tossed bags of coins through a window (or down the chimney, depending on which version of the story you read or hear), and they were captured in the girls’ stockings hanging to dry by the fire. The family was overjoyed to have received such riches.

Soon news traveled about the mysteri-ous money in stockings, and other chil-dren left out stockings for St. Nicholas to capture their own gifts.

The tradition has transformed over the years, and now many children hang stock-ings by the chimney with the expectation that the stockings will be filled with gifts from Santa. Traditions once suggested that only gifts from Santa were left in

stockings, while gifts placed beneath the tree were from family, but that has since changed. Stockings are now meant to hold small gifts while larger items are placed under the tree.

Stockings should be hung away from the flames of the fire as a safety precau-tion. Some children even like to hang indi-vidual stockings on their bedposts instead of on a fireplace mantle.

Hanging stockings with care

WEEKLY

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Aries, you can be quite generous when you choose to be, but sometimes you can overlook the needs of others. Pay as much attention to others’ needs as possible this week.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Little things infl uence how others look at you, Taurus, so make sure you get all of your ducks in a row -- especially at work. Focus on some fi ner details.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21You may not be in a practical mood this week, Gemini. Fortunately for you, there isn’t much of importance that needs to be done, so you are free to let loose a little bit.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22This isn’t a week to take a walk down Memory Lane, Cancer. Focus on the fu-ture rather than getting lost in nostalgia. However, let your past guide your actions a bit.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, your calendar is fi lling up quickly, but you cannot add any days to the calendar. Divide your responsibilities so you can better handle everything on your slate.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Ambivalence will get you nowhere fast, Virgo. It can be diffi cult to make decisions, but that’s something you have to do this week. Once you do, you can forge ahead.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, you are capable of making intelli-gent, objective decisions. Expect to fi nd yourself with a growing list of new friends who want your advice.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Now is not the time to begin a new proj-ect, Scorpio. Rather, keep a low profi le and fi nish up any tasks that you did not get to fi nish last week.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, it’s diffi cult to get a good read on any associates or friends, which could impact your plans moving forward. You may need to make a few assumptions and back track later.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20Capricorn, right now all you can think about is your career and your fi nancial future. That’s okay because you’ve been meaning to give more thought to your fi nances and how to proceed.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, you may feel yourself pulled in two different directions this week. There’s a part of you that is focused on home, and another that knows work beckons. Find a balance.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20It may seem like getting others to open up is a struggle this week. Find a way to communicate as best you can, Pisces.
