The Four - Way TestOf the things we think, say, or do:

* Is it the TRUTH?

*Is it FAIR to all concerned?

*Will it build GOODWILL and

BETTER FRIENDSHIP?

*Will it the BENEFICIAL to all

concerned?

Of the thousands of matters on which [Rotarians] of so diverse a complexion disagree, [on]

one we are in perfect accord. We believe in the brotherhood of man…

Rotary International itself offers a preview of a world at peace.”

Editorial

As we have all noticed, March has arrived and in the cycle of the Rotary theme months, March is Literacy Month. When the concept of theme months commenced back in 1983 literacy was considered so important that it was the theme to start the Rotary year and July was the dedicated month. Along the way, the penny dropped that there was rather a lot happening in July with changes of administration and new club Boards settling in.

Literacy is not only a significant goal for Rotary but it is also a special goal for Rotary because we know that literacy is a key factor in overcoming poverty and all that goes with it. Rotary considers it to be so important that it is one of the 6 areas of focus for The Rotary Foundations six areas of focus, that reflect critical humanitarian needs that club members are addressing. Rotary clubs support literacy and education through local and international service initiatives.

UNESCO notes that literacy contributes to peace as it brings people closer to attaining individual freedoms and better understanding of the world, as well as preventing or resolving conflict. The connection between literacy and peace can be seen in unstable democracies or in conflict-affected countries where it is harder to establish or sustain a literate environment. How appropriate that in this year of Peace through Service we try harder to make a sustainable difference. Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy. There are good reasons why literacy is at the core of education for all.

In this month of LITERACY our beloved District Governor Rtn Mohan Mulherkar has rightly promised us to sanction a number of benches to some of the needy schools and a water filter plant to a school benefitting Seven Hundred plus students. This we feel is the right thing in promoting the Literacy in this Literacy month.

By the time this March issue of FARMAGUDI is published, we already had the District Governors official visit to the club on 10th March 2014 as was postponed two times due to time constraints. Relevant photographs will be given only in the next issue. DG’s visit was much successful and we received lots of appreciations for our work.

I wish you all Happy colour festival Holi and traditional Shigmo.

RI President’s

Message

Growing up in Duncan, Okla., USA, I took it for granted that everyone could read. In my own elementary school, not only were we expected to be reading by the age of seven or eight, we were expected to read upside down. We each took turns reading books to the entire class, and of course, if you want to read out loud to a group while you show them the pictures, you can't do it the right way up. All the way through elementary school, we did that every week, until it didn't really matter to us which way we were holding the book.

I never thought too much about that skill at the time. But a few months ago, on a visit to a Rotary project in Decatur, Ala., I walked into a first-grade classroom and was asked if I would read a book to a class of six-year-olds. Naturally, I was happy to oblige. I sat down, opened the book they had chosen, and started reading to about 30 little kids – upside down, just the way I did it back in second grade.

In a sense, I was doing exactly what I'd learned to do more than half a century earlier. But as an adult, and especially as a Rotarian, I saw that experience in a different way. I was reading to a group of children who were well on their way to literacy themselves. We were sitting in their classroom, in a school where Rotarians came every week to read one-on-one with children who needed a little extra help. There wasn't any question that every child in that room would grow up to be a literate adult. And all of them took that completely for granted – as they took it for granted that adults would care enough to read them a book while showing them the pictures, even if that meant reading upside down.

We all know that millions of children all over the world aren't that lucky. That's why we make basic education and literacy a priority in our Rotary service. As we mark Literacy Month in Rotary, we remind ourselves what a gift we are giving when we help a child to read – whether it's a child on the other side of the world or right in our own hometown.

President Speaks My dear fellow Rotarians, Annes, Annettes & friends of Rotary

Literacy is the Tonic that can transform community with sadness, ill health and poverty into An energetic vibrant force. Hence March month is designated as LITERACY MONTH in Rotary Calendar. Literacy does not mean only three R’s;Reading , wRiting & aRithmatic. It is of course essential to promote Literacy. The Literacy provides you an occupation that ensures financial returns to you as well as community. Therefore stress is always on literacy programs that ensures gainful occupation. Hence in the program of Literacy our focus is not only on Writing and Reading but also to develop the skills that will further develop evolution of Human Race.

If we want to eradicate poverty, if we want better health, if we want our children to grow into more knowledgeable and responsible citizens and to avoid anarchy, the only route available is Literacy. Consequently several ills in the world can be tackled if we eradicate illiteracy from the world. We fought together to eradicate Polio from this planet, now let us fight together to eradicate illiteracy firstly from our country India and from the entire world.

Last month we donated free spectacles to around 100 patients in the areas of Mangeshim, Mardol, Veling, Kuncoliem etc. Thereafter we had 6 days accupressure camp at Ponda in co-ordination with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Hanumangadh Rajasthan wherein around 125 patients availed the treatment. We attended 55th District Conference at Panaji which was very well organized by DG Rtn Mohan Mulherkar. There were galaxy of speakers and a delicious food. Our DG Rtn Mohan deserves bunch of congratulations for organizing grand and meticulously planned conference. Our Rotarians who registered in large numbers cannot be missed out from my gratitudes.

By the time this bulletin is released our DG visited our club on 10th March who was welcomed by all of us. The detailed reports of it will be given in the next issue.

I wish all Rotarians a HAPPY AND COLOURFUL HOLY AND SHIGMO.
