• Mountains are the most important landform in South Asia. They affect where rain falls--rain that is needed for crops. Think about landforms in your state. Wh0o do you think have the greatest efect on people's lives?

• Discuss movies or stories in which geographic features are an important part of the plot. For example stories of pi8oneers crossing the plains and mountains of the American West. How do people confront the challenges of their environment?

Pangaea

• Pangaea is the name scientists proposed for the huge landmass composed of all the Earth's continents. Scientists think that the area that is now the United States once lay near the Equator. India was near the South Pole. Such locations affected climate. Geological evidence suggests that port of India was once covered by glacier

Climbing Mount Everest

• Tenzing Norgay of Nepal and Edmund Hilary became the first people to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest. Tenzing, a member of the Sherpa ethnic group, was born in a mountainous district of Nepal not far from Everest. Between the 1930s and 1950s, several expeditions made assaults upon Everest's seemingly unreachable peak. Tenzing took part in many of these expeditions and gained recognition as a strong and knowledgeable climber.

• However, it was not until May 29, 1953, that he and Hillary became the first people to stand at the highest point on the Earth. Owing to the scarcity of oxygen at such elevations, the celebration was brief. Tenzing at a piece of cake, took a few photos, and being a dutiful Buddhist, left an offering of food before he descended.

• While the city of Mumbai receives an average of about 85 inches of rain per year, some places in the United States receive more. For example, the wettest community in the continental United States is Quillayute, Washington, which receives more than 104 inches of rain per year.

Another Winter Wind

• West Africans are familiar with a winter wind known as the harmattan, which sweeps out of the Sahara and across the Sahel. Unlike the winter monsoons of South Asia, which bring dry, cold air, the harmattan brings hot, dust laden winds to West Africa. Like the monsoons of Asia, however, local people welcome the harmattan. Although the harmattan causes increased daytime temperatures, it is nicknamed "the doctor" because its dryness brings relief from the heat by evaporating moisture on peoples' skin, which creates a feeling of coolness.
