Prof Kaushak explained the importance of trees to the students so that they grasp theimport of the function. Trees besides filtering oxygen from air provide binding to soilagainst erosion. Rtn Bawa also brought out the fact that whilst producing Oxygen, trees remove CO2 from the air which is more harmful as mere concentration of 2percent if enough to harm life and also to reduce carbon signatures.

After l ight refreshments, trees were planted. It was decided that each tree should beput in care of a student with his name displayed prominently. CULTIVATING A POWERFULSOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

By Antoinette Tuscano, Rotary edi tor ial staff

Social media has been a powerful tool in spreading Rotarys

message. When BioMarker conducted a survey this summer ofwhich nonprofits in the Chicago market had made the biggest

impact on social media, Rotary came out on top in our use ofTwitter and Facebook (231,000 Facebook likes and 204,000Twitter followers), second in use of all social media in theChicago area, and 20

    thin the United States.

I was approached by BigMarker to answer a few questions fortheir blog on what it took to cultivate our social media presence.Heres a bit of what I shared.

How important is social media to your online communities?

Social media has become increasingly important for Rotariansand the organization because it allows us to interact and learnfrom one another, which people do on our 40,000 memberLinkedIn group. Ive learned a lot from Rotarians about whatsimportant to them in their communities, and several Rotarianshave told me that LinkedIn has helped them feel the globalreach of an organization that is so much more than their localRotary club.

Social media also has been a great way for Rotarians to bemade aware of the work of other Rotarians around the world. For example, I recently did a Facebook post to let people knowabout flooding in India and how they could help, and I

recognized the work of one of the Rotarians in that effort, Dr.Nischal Pandey. He then went onto Facebook and responded tocomments people had. Its good for people to see that they caninteract with the people were writing about.

What are three important things to maintaining engagementwith followers?

The most important thing for engagement is to listen andrespond. I understand that sometimes people dont like everypolicy about Rotary, and they say so. Thats OK. We listen towhat they say and respect how they feel and think. And itsimportant to always, always be honest with people. On socialmedia, its better to be authentic and not quite perfect than

smoothly polished around the edges but not really sayinganything of value. Your integrity and the care and concern youhave for your members/customers is critical.

What have you learned from working in social media andwhat is your end goal for using social media?

From social media, Ive learned how wonderful the Rotary storyis. It may have different looks and flavors in different parts of theworld, but the heart of it is the same everywhere. Rotariansworldwide want to leave the world a better place than how theyfound it. Were all connected and in this together. Rotarianshave taught me how much we can do when we work together. What I want from social media is to tell the Rotary story and tohelp others tell that story as well.
