Learning should be fun. Our BTEC programmes are popular with students all around the world because they make learning enjoyable. Our BTEC programmes tap into what inspires and engages young learners – their passion.

Whether it is music, sport or fashion design, BTECs make students feel good about learning and motivate them to pursue a career in a field they love.

We are all about building students’ confidence. We want to develop students’ skills for their futures by providing them with an education that is relevant and connected to their chosen field. BTECs give learners the self belief and self reliance to chase the job of the dreams – and excel in it once they are there.

Through our 2012 BTEC training programme we want to help you as an instructor, assessor, external verifier or team leader give your students the confidence they need to meet their learning potential. Our training courses are designed to create successful student results, and help your centre flourish.

This year, we are also offering specific marketing and promotions seminars for centres’ senior managers, decision makers and marketing teams. We want to help centres stand out from their competition and assist them in increasing their rates of student recruitment and reten-tion.

BTEC PORTFOLIO BUILDING

A ‘portfolio’ is the collection of work produced by the learner, and the learning materials they have used to complete their course. A portfolio tells a story about the growth of a learner, it documents the process of learning and creating, and any ob-stacles encountered along the way. The challenge to tutors is to design a portfolio programme that works and that:

• encourages the tutor to see the learner as an individual, with his or her unique set of characteristics, needs and strengths

• emphasises the role of the tutor in improving learner achievements through evaluative feedback and self-reflection

• helps tutors standardise and evaluate the skills, knowledge and understanding that learners aim to acquire, without limiting their creativity

• helps learners take more control of the work they do, and enables tutors to adapt their teaching and learning ap-proaches to better engage with a wider range of learners and learning styles

• involves learners in the assessment process, giving them a more meaningful role in their achievements

• invites learners to reflect upon their growth and perfor-mance

Learners need to understand the role and importance of a Port-folio, and the requirements of a unit’s grading criteria. The full portfolio contents should clearly demonstrate those activities that meet the evidence requirements of a unit’s grading criteria.
