Safety information

Safety information

GeneralOnly use the power supply includedwith the product. Using anunauthorised power supply willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the telephone. Power supplynumber is M-GA35 - 095130F.

For the handset use only AAA 1.2VNickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)rechargeable batteries with a minimumcapacity of 700 mAh. Never use otherbatteries or conventional alkalinebatteries. They could lead to a shortcircuit or destroy the battery casing.Batteries and accessories are availablefrom www.withandwithoutwires.comor call 0870 240 5522.

If the Keyguard is switched on, it isNOT possible to make calls, includingemergency numbers (999/112).

Do not open the base station or handset(other than to change batteries). Thiscould expose you to high voltages orother risks.

Radio signals transmitted between thehandset and base may cause interferenceto hearing aids.

This product should not be used nearemergency/intensive care medicalequipment and should not be used bypeople with pacemakers.

Never dispose of batteries in a fire. Thereis a serious risk of explosion and/or therelease of highly toxic chemicals.

CleaningSimply clean the handset and base station with a damp (not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never use householdpolish as this will damage the product.Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static shock.

EnvironmentalDo not expose to direct sunlight.

The product may heat up when thebatteries are being recharged. This isnormal. However, we recommend thatyou do not place the product on antique/veneered wood to avoid damage.

Do not stand your product on carpets orother surfaces which generate fibres, orplace it in locations preventing the freeflow of air over its surfaces.

Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it indamp or humid conditions, such asbathrooms.

Do not expose your product to fire,explosive or other hazardous conditions.

There is a slight chance that your phonecould be damaged by an electrical storm.We recommend that you unplug thepower and telephone line cord during anelectrical storm.

1 Connect the base station

Plug the power supply cable into thepower socket on the underside of yourbase.

Plan the location

Situate your product close enough tothe telephone and mains power socketsso that the cables will reach.

Make sure it is at least 1 metre awayfrom other electrical products to avoidinterference.

Do not situate the product in thebathroom or other humid areas.

Setting up

WARNING

Do not connect the telephone line cordto the phone socket until your handsetis fully charged. This will prevent therisk of the phone being answered beforethe battery is charged. Answering thephone before the battery is fully charged may prevent it from reachingits optimum capacity.

Under no circumstances should non-rechargeable batteries be used. Only use AAA 1.2V Nickel MetalHydride (NiMH) rechargeablebatteries with a minimum capacity of700mAh.Using inappropriate batterieswill invalidate your guarantee andmay damage the telephone. 3 Registering and charging the handset

The display is protected by a plasticfilm. Remove the protective plastic filmfrom the display.

To register your handset, place it in thebase station with the display facingupward. After approx. one minute, thehandset’s internal number is displayed(e.g.: 1). Successful registration issignalled by a confirmation tone.

When the handset is registered thedisplay will show:

Insert the batteries

Insert the two batteries supplied, asindicated inside the batterycompartment and slide the batterycompartment cover shut.

The battery cover may be found in thepackaging with the batteries.

Out of range?

If you go out of range of a base stationfor a long time while your handset isswitched ON, it may take more than20 minutes to ‘find’ the base stationagain when you come back withinrange. However, by simply switchingthe handset OFF for a moment, thenON again, it will find the base stationwithin a few seconds.

Battery level icons

When the batteries are almost flat abeep sounds and the display shows theempty battery icon. You will need torecharge your handset before you canuse it. The various states of chargeare shown below:

Battery performance

Batteries and case may become warmduring charging. This is normal.

Under ideal conditions, the handsetbatteries should give about 13 hourstalktime or 170 hours standby timeon a single charge. However, newNiMH batteries do not reach their fullcapacity until they have been innormal use for several days.

The charge capacity of rechargeablebatteries will reduce with time as theywear out, so reducing the talk/standbytime of the handset. Eventually theywill need to be replaced. New batteriesare available fromwww.withandwithoutwires.comor call 0870 240 5522.

If you replace the handset batteries with ones that have been fully charged,the battery indicator will not show fulluntil the next charge cycle has beencompleted. Charge the handset untilthe batteries register full again. Fromthen on the display will be correct.

If the icons on the display flash continuously...

It means that the handset is notregistered with the base station.

Ensure you have correctly carried outstep 3 above. If the product has stillnot registered, please see “Registeringmanually” on page 47.

All additional handsets you purchasewill need to be individually registeredwith the base station before they willwork with the BT Diverse 5310.

Leave the handset for approx. 16 hoursin the base station to charge thebatteries, as they are not charged in thefactory. The battery status icon flasheson the handset to indicate that thebatteries are being charged.

4 Connect the telephoneline cord to the base andplug into the wall socket

Ensure that each end of the line cord isfitted into the correct socket.

Fit the belt clip onto the back of thehandset.

Your BT Diverse 5310 is now ready for use.

Setting the date and time

Press the Menu options button.

Press the DOWN navigationbutton until the display showsCalender/Clock.

Press the OK options button.Set Appointment appears.

Press the DOWN navigationbutton until the display showsDate/Time.

Enter the day/month/year, e.g.05 10 03 for 5th October 2003.


Enter the time – hours/minutes.e.g. 0925 for 9:25am.


Use the UP/DOWN navigationbuttons to select am/pm if in 12hour mode.


Press the DOWN navigationbutton to Time Mode.


Use the UP/DOWN navigationbuttons to select 12 or 24 hourdisplay (12hr is the default).

Note

If you subscribe to a Caller Displayservice the time and date will be setwith the first incoming call. However, the year setting will have tobe changed manually. See opposite.

To make an external call

Ensure the handset isswitched ON.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton. You will hear the dialtone.

Dial the number.

Using the telephone

Enter the phone number first.

If you make a mistake pressthe �C options button toremove any incorrect digits.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to dial the number.

Making and ending calls

To end a call

Press the RED PHONE button.

Note

To exit a menu at any time, press theRED PHONE button. This will takeyou back one step. Keep pressing theRED PHONE button to return to theidle screen.

To switch the handset poweron and off

Press and hold the REDPHONE button to switch thehandset off.

Press and hold the REDPHONE button to switch thehandset on again.

Call timer

Your handset automatically times theduration of all external calls, showing iton the display during your call and for a few seconds after it is finished.

To receive an external call

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to answer the call.

Or

If the handset is on the base,simply lift it up and speak.You do not need to press theGREEN PHONE button.

This is called Autotalk. Youcan switch autotalk off so youalways have to press theGREEN PHONE button toanswer a call, see page 38.

To make a handsfree call

Dial the number

Press the HANDSFREE button.The loudspeaker is switchedon and you hear the numberbeing dialled.

To switch back to using thehandset at any time, press theGREEN PHONE button.

Handsfree

Handsfree allows you to talk to yourcaller without holding the handset andenables other people in the room tolisten to the conversation. Your handsare left free, for example to take notes.

To adjust the handsfreevolume whilst in handsfreemode

Whilst in handsfree mode andyou want to increase ordecrease the handsfree volume.

Press the MENU optionsbutton.

Press the OK options button toselect volume.

Using the LEFT or RIGHTnavigation buttons you caneither increase or decrease thevolume.

Press the OK options button if you want to save the newvolume setting.

If you need to replace the handset inthe base station during a call, forexample, because the battery is flat,hold down the HANDSFREE button.

To switch to handsfree duringa call

During a call you can switch tohandsfree mode:

Press the HANDSFREE button.The call is transferred to theloudspeaker.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to switch back to usingthe handset.

To answer a call in handsfree

When the phone rings:

Press the DIRECTORY button.

Enter the telephone number.

Press the OK options button toenter the name.

Enter the name.

Entering names:Enter the name using the letterson the keypad. For example, toenter the name TOM:

Then press the 6 button todisplay m.

To copy an entry to anotherDiverse 5000 handset

You can copy individualdirectory entries from thedirectory or extra directory to another Diverse 5000handset that is registered tothe same base.

Press the DIRECTORY orEXTRA DIRECTORY button toopen the directory.

Press the DOWN navigationbutton to scroll to the entryyou want to copy.


Press the DOWN navigationbutton until the display showsSend Entry.


Use the DOWN navigationbutton to select the handsetyou wish to copy the entry to.



To edit a directory entry


Use the keypad to enter thefirst letter of the name youwish to edit.

Then press the DOWNnavigation button to scroll tothe exact entry.

Press the MENU options button.

Press the DOWN navigationbutton until Edit Entry isdisplayed.

Press the OK button.

Edit the number, if necessary,using the LEFT/RIGHT andDELETE buttons.

Press the OK button.

The name will be displayed.Edit the name if necessary byusing the LEFT/RIGHT andDELETE buttons as above.

If the name is correct, pressthe MENU button, Save Entry

is displayed.

Extra directory

Your BT Diverse 5310 has anadditional 10 name and numberdirectory. It is recommendedthat this is used for specialnumbers i.e. doctor, dentist,takeaway numbers.

Press the EXTRA DIRECTORYbutton.

The structure of this directoryis the same as the maindirectory. You can follow theinstructions starting on page 16for storing, dialling, viewing,editing and deleting thesenames and numbers.

To dial a number in the redial list

Press the REDIAL optionsbutton. The last numberdialled will be displayed.

Press the DOWN navigationbutton to scroll through theredial list.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to dial the number.

Paging and internal calls

You can alert handset users that theyare wanted, or locate a missing handset.

If you have multiple handsetsregistered to the base you can makeinternal calls between handsets.

Press the INT options button.

A list of all the handsets thatare registered to the base arelisted, you can select any ofthem.

Your handset is identified by INT 1 <.

Press the DOWN navigationbutton to highlight thehandset you want to call andpress the GREEN PHONEbutton.

Or

Press the handset number youwant to call on the keypad.

Or

Select the Call All option to page all the handsetsregistered to the base andpress the GREEN PHONEbutton.

The line will be seized by thefirst handset user to answerthe call.

When on a call you can talk to someonein the same room, without your callerhearing.

To switch secrecy on/off

During a call:

Press the INT options button.The microphone is switchedoff. The caller hears musicaltones.

To put an external call on holdwhile you make an internal call

This enables you to ask anotherhandset user a question andthen get straight back to yourcaller.

During a call:

Press the INT options buttonto display the list of handsets.Your caller hears musicaltones.

Press the UP or DOWNnavigation button to select thehandset you want to call.

Or

Press the handset number youwant to call on the keypad.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to call.

You can now speak with theother handset user.

To return to yourexternal caller:

Press the MENU button andBack will be displayed.

You can forward an externalcall to another handsetregistered to the base.

During an external call:

Press the GREEN PHONEoptions button to call. When theother handset answers you cantell them you are transferringthe call.

Note

You can also put the call throughwithout announcing it by immediatelypressing the RED PHONE button afterdialling the other handset.

To answer a waiting callduring an internal call

If you are making an internalcall and hear the Call Waitingtone you can immediately takethe incoming call.


To accept Call Waiting, pressthe OK options button.

Calls that are ‘withheld’, ‘unavailable’or ‘international’ are not stored in theCalls list, as there is no telephonenumber sent via the Network.

Note

If you have a new call in your Callslist, the icon will flash on thehandset display.

If you subscribe to a Caller DisplayService you can see who is calling youon your handset display, as well as thedate and time of their call (unless thenumber has been withheld).

If you have stored a name to go withthe number in your handset directory,the name will be displayed as well.

Please ensure that you have stored thefull telephone number, including the areacode, otherwise the name will not matchthe number stored in the directory.

If the caller has withheld their number,the display will show WITHHELD.

If you call from another internalhandset, the display shows the handsetnumber and INT.

Calls list

The Calls list contains the telephonenumbers of your last 10 callers.

Whether you take a call or not, thecaller’s details are stored in the Callslist. You can display, scroll through anddial numbers in the list and copy theminto the directory.

If a call is received when the Calls listis full then the oldest entry will bedeleted automatically.

The button lets you open:

• Text messages (SMS).

• Network Mailbox.

• Calls list.

Alarm clock

You can use your handset as an alarmclock. You must set the date and timebefore the alarm will work. The alarm willring daily until the setting is turned off.

To set the alarm

Walk and talk

Please note thatbatteries are used more quickly in walkand talk mode.

• Make sure Call barring is not set.

• Any incoming calls on the handsetbeing used as the room monitor willnot ring at the handset, however, the display will show when you havea call.

• The battery power is used up morequickly. If using for long periods oftime it may be advisable to place thehandset in the base to ensure that thebattery does not run out.

• When an external number is called itwill ring for approximately 90 secondsbut room monitor calls to an internalnumber are unlimited.

If you purchase new handsets to usewith your current BT Diverse 5310,they will not be pre-registered to a basestation. You will need to do this beforeyou can use them.

BT Diverse 5310

Up to six handsets can be registeredand operated from the BT Diverse 5310base station. This allows you to makean internal call between two handsetswhile a third is making an external call.

Generally this telephone may beconnected to switchboards. In the eventof any difficulties please consult yourswitchboard Service Provider.

Technical information

How many telephones can you have onthe line?

All items of equipment have a RingerEquivalence Number (REN) which isused to calculate the number of itemsthat may be connected to any onetelephone line.

The BT Diverse 5310 (with up to 6handsets) has a total REN of 1.

Any other instrument provided by BT may be assumed to have a REN of 1 unless stated otherwise.

A total REN of 4 is allowed per telephoneline. (For example: if the BT Diverse 5310is used in conjunction with threeextension telephones, each with a RENof 1, then the total REN = 4)

R&TTE

This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards.

This equipment complies with theessential requirements for the RadioEquipment and TelecommunicationsTerminal Equipment Directive(1999/5/EC). To set the dialling mode

You need only adjust thissetting if your switchboard doesnot operate with the pre-settone dialling. You can changethe dial mode to pulse dialling.

To set a pause before dialling

You can insert a pause to allowyour switchboard time to get a line before your BT Diverse5310 dials the number.


Press the 8 button.

Press the 9 button.

Press the 1 button.

Press the 1 button.

Enter the number for thecorresponding pause length(e.g. 4 for 6 seconds):

1 = 1 second2 = 2 seconds3 = 3 seconds4 = 6 seconds.
