An unknown author, but a saying that captures the

importance of smiling. The smile is the most beautiful

part of someones face, telling a million stories. They say

that everyone smiles in the same language, and that the

shortest distance between two people is a smile. Mother

Theresa said "Every time you smile at someone, it is an

action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. We

so easily stop smiling and the main reason is the way in

which we feel about our teeth.

The Dr Grant cosmetic dentistry brand stands for excellence.

Nervous and embarrassed patients are treated sympathetically.

He believes in progressive cosmetic dentistry, a caring and

ethical concept. Lets go back to basics. Is it the colour of your

teeth, is it the shape, or is it your lips? There are so many basic

procedures that can be carried out that can transform your

smile. Dr Grant says, I provide the possibilities, you simply

    make the choice.

The Whyte House Facial and Dental Cosmetic Clinic provides

cosmetic dentistry to patients from all over the world. Dr Grant,

the owner and principle is the only provider of the speed brace

in this area, as well as the leading provider of Invisalign. "I feel

that if I can move beautiful teeth into position we avoid the

need for destructive procedures. Lets get back to basics, let us

keep the teeth you have and build on them. Teeth are a natural

beautiful creation, lets not destroy it unless absolutely

necessary. Keep it simple keep it affordable"

Dr Grant treats patients from all over the world. A member of

the Academy of Advanced Facial Aesthetics and the only

cosmetic dentist in the region to be granted practising

I've never seen a smiling face that was not beautiful." ~ Author Unknown.

place for learning, where children come to find out about science

sustainabiity, history, geography, farming and more. And businesses

  • Its been a great year, muses Ben Hall, owner and chef ofThe Bathwick Boatman. But we are always thinking of waysto build on what we are doing. Creating new partnerships withhotels, for example, would be wonderful.

Ben and his wife Rosy have run this delightful restaurant aboveBaths historic boating station on the banks of the River Avon fornearly five years.

The venues uniquely beautiful location makes it a favourite forparties and just about any special occasion: weddings, birthdays, corporate dinners, christenings and anniversaries, wine dinnersand book launches. Rosy works closely with customers to ensurethat the event theyve dreamed of goes exactly as planned.

We offer exclusive use of the restaurant to parties of more than 40without a hire charge, says Rosy. As well as all the functions, theBoatman is a lovely restaurant for a romantic dinner or a small familygroup.

It really is a family run business husband in the kitchen, wife waitingthe tables. The abundant fresh cut flowers on each table are lovinglygrown by Bens dad, while Rosys dad helps with the books.

They rely on high quality local suppliers, from the brilliant BathButcher, Terry & Son, to ever dependable Bristol-based coffeeexperts Roy Ireland Espresso Services, and ultra-efficient GillianAusten Associates for marketing and editorial. When the suppliersare reliable, we are reliable so we continue to use their excellent services! says Rosy.

We have a high proportion of repeat customers because we are sohidden from the road that any passing trade wouldnt know we arehere, she says, adding: Were a favourite secret restaurant formany Bathonians!

In fact, the Bathwick Boatman is only a ten-minute stroll from thecentre of Bath. Once discovered, such is the popularity of the coupleand the restaurant-in-a-boathouse, people are prepared to travel along way to enjoy good old-fashioned hospitality and value for money - resulting in a varied and loyal client base.

We have great affection for a Parisian car club Morgan Francewho drive over three times a year to have lunch and stroll into Bath, reveals Rosy. The car park looks amazing with 20 Morgans lined up!

Then theres Iris who lives down the road and scoots in for fish andchips. Shes as special to us as the dignitaries at a corporate do,flanked by diners from the local rugby team. Every customer is reallyimportant to us.

Fully licensed, the Bathwick Boatman serves lunch and dinner fromTuesday to Saturday and traditional lunches on Sunday. There are always vegetarian and gluten-free choices on the menu.

With Christmas on the horizon, Rosy and Ben are already temptingdiners with a festive menu promising sumptuous food at very reasonable prices.

Choose two courses (17.75) or three (23.50) and select thetraditional turkey and Christmas pudding, or choose from a wealth ofother indulgences, such as home-smoked salmon, kettle-cookedgammon with mustard cheese sauce, and blackcurrant and clottedcream ice-cream with shortbread - all accompanied by friendly service, Christmas crackers and atmospheric candlelight.

As Ben says, Our restaurant is more than a business, it is a way oflife. Our staff and our suppliers are so important to us because theyenable us to provide the top quality service that makes our customers happy."

  • NAUGHTY but n-ice - people cant get enough of award-

    winning Yarde Farm ice cream.

The indulgent flavours, such as Choc Noisette & Tia Maria,

Rhubarb and Ginger, White Chocolate and Lemon Crunch and

Raspberry Pavlova are just the coolest thing with ice cream

connoisseurs at events and locations across the country.

    No wonder demand is heating

up; this year saw Yarde Farm

    report a 6.5% increase on

    turnover and an 11% increase

    on production.This is a

company that really has got a

    chilly summer and a severe

    economic downturn licked.

It was in 1987 that Yarde Farm

    was founded. A time, says

    managing director Garry Buller,

    when the icy confectionery

    was not being taken seriously

as a desert, being frozen out

by the likes of jam roly poly,

    syrup sponge and Black

    Forest Gateaux.

Serious about providing a creamy indulgent dessert choice,

packed only with the freshest of natural ingredients, the

company founders set about re-educating the regions

tastebuds when it came to high-class second courses.

Now, nearly 25 years and more than 60 mouth-watering

flavours later, Yarde Farm has certainly become the hottest

provider of quality ice cream, not just becoming the West

Countrys first choice for the frozen dessert, but having its

range sold in restaurants, at National Trust properties, kiosks,

clubs, pubs, cafes and ice cream parlours, across the country.

And it wasnt long before the awards started coming along,

    with accolades including a much-coveted grade A

accreditation from the British Retail Consortium for food

    manufacturing.

The icing - or ice cream - on the cake, however, came in 2002

when the company was crowned Ice Cream Alliance

    Champions of Champions.

That is akin to winning the ice cream equivalent of an Olympic

    Gold medal, explains Garry proudly.

The loyal team of 12, many of whom have been with the

company since the start, are based at the modern purpose-

built factory in Plymouth, which was built in response to Yarde

    Farms success.

It produces more than 1.5million litres a year with the ice cream

sold in a range of quantities, from 120ml tubs, popular at

locations and events, to catering packs for those requiring large

    quantities.

We appreciate that the quality of the product is the root of

long-term success and guarantees customers will come back

time and time again, says Garry.

Our luxury range is made with nothing but fresh cream, real

fruit and, of course, the best quality ingredients including

    clotted cream in selected flavours.

The soft scoop selection is pretty sumptuous too - look out for

English Toffee or Banana- while the 12 different varieties,

including Chilled Champagne, Crisp Apple and Cool Mojito, in

the refreshing luxury sorbet selection are destined to get the

    tastebuds tingling.

  • The Green family at West Pennard are very proud of their traditional style of farmhouse cheese making; for over 100years and through 4 generations Greens has been producingaward winning Cheddar Cheese.

Run by Lloyd Green and the great team in the dairy, they makeaward-winning Farmhouse Cheddar and Double Gloucesterespecially for the West Country range. Their beautiful 600 acre farmlies at the foot of Glastonbury Tor and supports a herd of 750 cowsof which about a quarter are reared organically. The milk theyproduce cant be beaten for cheese making and ensures thatGreens Farmhouse Cheddar has a unique character and awonderful flavour.

Their cheeses are produced in the traditional way to give time for thetrue flavour of real cheddar to develop, and they are best known fortheir Traditional Mature Cheddar, which has a strong and powerfulflavour, typical of a true West Country Cheddar resulting from 12months maturing.

However, Greens produce a range of other cheeses well worth a try.Among the Cheddars discover the range of flavours produced by differing maturing times. Mild Cheddar has a lovely moist creamyflavour, Organic Cheddar where the cows have an all grass diet has asofter, buttery flavour, rich and full bodied, Vintage Cheddar, is a

tangy cheese where the flavour has been developed over 18months, or try the uniquely nutty flavour of Greens UnpasteurisedCheddar.

Greens also produce two types of Double Gloucester, Organic andstandard with a distinctively rich and creamy flavour and texture, anda fresh light Goats Cheese made Cheddar style.

They are now making a delicious oak chip smoked Cheddar and aCows milk Mozzarella which is proving very popular.

  • Jonathan Baileys teenage culinary experiment hasdeveloped into a popular and successful business thatsnot only a hit throughout the West Country, its destined totempt the tastebuds of the rest of the country as well.

Hes about to see his products go onto the shelves of a nationalsupermarket chain, and while contractual obligations mean hecant reveal which store itll be just yet, hes delighted to haveachieved one of his original business goals. The new venturemarks the end of an exciting year which saw no fewer than threesupermarket giants offering to stock his range of the very bestpotted Devon crab.

We have been working very hard in order to reach the goal I setfor the company when we first started, to have our products soldon a national scale in a high end supermarket chain, he says.

This year has been a very progressive one. We had thee offersand finally signed up with one of the supermarkets. Our launchis now imminent and we are already working on new recipes fornew products, ready for the beginning of 2012.

We have exciting times ahead and are looking forward todeveloping a excellent quality fish brand that retains its corevalues and at a price bracket to fit most peoples budget.

The latest events are the continuation of a success story thatbegan when then teenager Jonathan was wondering what to dowith a large brown Devon crab hed been given. He and hisfriend Naomi decided to mix the shellfish with butter and a secret blend of spices and then served up the result to hisfriends - who all loved it.

The rest, as they say is history and, now in his early 20s,Jonathan, helped by his mum, Jenny, continues to develop new, tasty and exciting recipes using locally sourced, sustainableseafood. Already employing five people at its site at UllacombeFarm, Bovey Tracey, there is every expectation that staffnumbers could grow even further as The Potted Fish Companysrapid rate of expansion continues.

We have always believed that it's important to work withbusinesses that benefit the local community and have alwaysused local supplies and will continue to do so, but are veryexcited about the opportunities ahead, says Jonathan.

His products come in eye-catching, yet tastefully designedpackaging and in a range of flavours. Theres potted crab withchilli, great when added to fresh tagliatelli, suggests Jonathan, smoked mackerel with horseradish, salmon with sesame andginger, prawns with chilli and lime and, his own personalfavourite, Old English potted crab.

Already available in delis and specialist food outlets across theSouth and South West, the Potted Fish Companys tasty productsare soon to be enjoyed by the rest of the country. So its goodnews for the nations foodies and good news for Jonathan, hisbusiness and staff, but thanks to his generosity, its also goodnews for those in need as he donates 5% of his profits to a non-profit organisation, founded by his uncle and aimed at helpingcancer patients and their families and 5% to Project Ocean whichsets out to protect the worlds oceans and their inhabitants.

prize winning pasties from padstow delivereddirect to your door as fresh as possible

Champagne corks are popping at The London Inn in

Padstow. Tim Tutton and his partner Lisa Mc Hardy are

celebrating their first complete year at this attractive

    traditional Cornish pub.

The London Inn, owned by St Austell Brewery, was already a very

busy place when Tim and Lisa took over, so they knew that building

on the strong local reputation was going to be quite a challenge.

However they have more than risen to it and are thrilled to be

attracting rave reviews from their visitors and in the local press.

One of the most popular pubs in

the area, it is a typical Cornish

    fishermans pub, full of charm,

    atmosphere and character with

    its own quirky ambience. The

    London Inn has 3 comfortable

    Bed and Breakfast rooms, and

    was converted from 3

    fishermens cottages, opening

as an Inn in 1803, taking its

name from an old local sloop. It

    is charmingly situated near to

    Padstow harbour.

Tim and Lisa hit the ground

    running and have barely had

time to draw breath since they

    took over. Their menus have

    proved extremely popular and

place a strong emphasis on the

    fantastic range of good fresh

    produce available locally. Tim

    says himself We are very

    passionate about fresh local

food, and try to source as much as possible within the area and use

a great range of suppliers from farm shops to fruiterers. Their

seasonal menus feature a wonderful range of seafood and meat

dishes, which as the season changes; will place more emphasis on

roasts, and warming traditional pies and stews, and of course, a

traditional Sunday Roast right through the winter months. The

delicious menu can be enjoyed in the bar or in The Wheelhouse

Restaurant which has seating for up to 24 people, and is available

fore private parties. They carry a range of St Austell Ales with the

largest selection of cask ales in Padstow, and are holders of the

Cask Marque Certificate of Excellence for real Ale. The well stocked

bar carries an excellent range of wines, ciders and spirits.

October saw the welcome return of their featured seasonal ales

and a regular live music feature from local musicians on Sunday

afternoons. Although their success is very exciting and gratifying,

    Tim and Lisa have another more personal cause for celebration;

they were married in October. Everyone at Bristol Business Post

wishes them every happiness and continued success.

  • The village of Zennor lies on the rocky North Cornish

coast between St Ives and Just between the high rocky

cliffs of the coast and the rugged, boulder strewn, granite

    hills and moors.

The Tinners Arms is the only pub in Zennor and was built in

1271 to accommodate the masons who constructed St.

Senara's Church which is famous for its mermaid.

The pub has changed very little over the years and retains its

stone floors, low beams and open log fires. Walkers on the

South West Coastal Path, or those that follow the more even

Coffin Way across the fields, who come across this peaceful

haven, find a real piece of traditional Cornwall. As they sit

beside the fire with a plate of real Cornish cheeses and a pint

of local ale, or on the sunny terrace looking out over the sea

enjoying some locally caught fish, the present century will seem

to slip away without a TV, jukebox or fruit machine, or even a

mobile phone signal here to interrupt the idyll.

The Tinners Arms serves good local food, sourced as far as

possible from the immediate area, freshly prepared on the

premises. The menu changes daily according to the availability

of the fresh produce and reflects the seasons. They are open

for lunch and supper every day throughout the year including

Sundays. Visit their web-site www.tinnersarms.com to view a

selection of their menus. On every Thursday they have live

music with an occasional local singer or poet.

If you decide to stay on, the White House next door offers

comfortable, modern accommodation. Built in 1838, the White

House was extensively restored and modernised by the present

owners in 2005 to provide two double en-suite rooms and two

single rooms which share a bathroom. All the luxuriously

furnished bedrooms are light and airy with tea and coffee

making facilities. The bathrooms are equipped with powerful

showers, and a selection of soft white towels and toiletries.

Traditional English breakfast using local produce is cooked by

the chef and is served in the farm house style dining room at a

time to suit you from 8.00 to 9.30 a.m.

Slip away this summer to the peace and tranquillity of

Tucked away on a cobbled street under the shadow of

St Thomas Church in Redcliffe, Bristol is the Seven

    Stars Inn.

One of Bristol's oldest character pubs dating back to the late

1600's (the pavement still has the iron-bound edges to prevent

damage by iron cart-wheels), The Seven Stars remains largely

unchanged from its origins in a city now packed with an ever

changing sea of trendy bars and clubs.

A historic building, the Seven Stars has links to the abolition of

the slave trade, its area was a bustling community of seafarers,

traders and residents and was one of the busiest parts of the

city. Bristol had made a fortune from the slave trade, and it was

in the Seven Stars that the anti-slavery campaigner, Reverend

Thomas Clarkson came in 1787 and began to put together

evidence later supplied to his friend William Wilberforce and

used to support the Act for the Abolition of Slavery.

The Seven Stars is located just off Bristol Bridge, close to the

commercial heart of the city, and offers a warm traditional

welcome to customers old and new. Their clientele are as

diverse as the ales they serve, from the pensioner in the corner

enjoying a quiet glass of Scrumpy, to business people dropping

in for a pint at lunchtime or after work. At the weekends the

tempo steps up a gear with regular live acoustic music every

Saturday and Sunday afternoon 3 pm to 6 pm - four acts back

to back, which attract a lively crowd. They hold a Real Ale

Festival every month featuring 20 beers from different counties.

The Seven Stars offers 8 ever changing real ales, as well as a

selection of real ciders and perrys, and has been awarded

CAMRA Bristol and District Pub of the Year in both 2011, and

2010, being the runners up in 2009.

So, if a traditional old fashioned pub with a pool table, dart

board, stories and history are what you are looking for - Come

    and visit.

  • EVERYBODYS clamouring to get a pizza the action at the

    new-look Graylings, near Barnstaple.

Fresh and locally caught fish with the best Devon chips continue to

be at the heart of this family-run eatery, but from a refurbished shop

which is now serving made and baked-to-order pizzas, burgers,

heavenly fresh fruit milkshakes and organic coffees and teas.

Boasting full wheelchair access, easy parking, highchairs and

telephone ordering, no wonder visitors and locals are queuing up to

sample the goodies. Its not the only new thing - Graylings now has

its own website, from where you can order all the latest dishes from

the comfort of home and at your own convenience.

Using lots of different products we have a good menu choice for

customers, says Sarah Grayling. Our fish is sustainable and

cooked in groundnut oil, which is a healthier mono unsaturated oil,

and is a nice chunky piece of fish in a light batter so customers get

a complete fish instead of a load of batter.

We use local potatoes and, when available, our fish specials rock

(huss) and skate are also from the area. They are very popular and

dont stay on the menu board for long!

The Grayling family: Sarah, husband Lee, his brothers John and

Martin and their parents, established their first fish and chip shop in

    1994, in North Tawton.

Also with an adjoining restaurant, business is booming and the

premises are also in line for a facelift. The newly revamped shop, in

Higher Road, Fremington, near Barnstable opened in 1999. The

work, which Sarah says is getting a huge thumbs-up from

customers, has enabled the exciting addition of a pizza oven,

enabling the arrival of freshly made and baked to order 9 and 12

pizzas - but not before some rigorous research.

They took a lot of getting right - we sampled different bases and

toppings untill we did get them right, reveals Sarah. If we are not

happy with something we will not sell it. Another big investment is

the coffee machine and we are now serving morning tea and coffee,

cakes and shakes, which are proving very popular. Our coffee is

organic and our heavenly shakes made with fat-free yogurt and real

fruit in flavours of banana, strawberry and blackcurrant. You can

really indulge with ice cream in choc chip, toffee bean, Smartie and

    mint choc chip flavours.

The recent introduction of fish and chips served in cardboard boxes

    - preventing the fish from sticking to the chips and proving

recyclable - and being able to eat in the restaurant at no extra cost

are just two more ways the family continually strives to better its

    products and service.

Customers always get a warm welcome and smile, says Sarah.

And we pride ourselves on the shops cleanliness and our high

    standards.

Theyre obviously doing something right. Lee has been runner-up

Fish Frier of the Year three years running and runner up three times

in the Best North Devon Traditional Fish & Chip Shop and boasts

    five-star scores on the door.

We are hoping for first place this year, says Sarah. Now that would

    be batter than anything.

Consumers are looking to the internet more and more toresearch potential suppliers and a carefully designed websitehas the ability to convert a user into a customer.

e2 media comprises a small team but its big on collectiveexperience, with more than 17 years in the website industry. For the well-known Surf Life Saving GB, which runs Surf LifeSaving clubs across the country we launched a website whichenables the marketing team to create microsites for their clubson the fly, via the CMS.

Now trading for nearly 18 months, Anne-Marie is proud of thefact that nearly all of e2 medias work has come fromrecommendation and referral.

  • WHEN the Somerville Hotel needed to implement an online booking system, it knew exactly which pioneeringcompany to call on.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in September, Cateractive Ltd was there at the very start of the internet hospitality selling and its CaterBook system is one of the longest serving in the sector.

Devised for efficient management of the booking provisions of guest rooms and hotels of up to 80 rooms, the system is aimed at the hospitality sector and includes a management package on hotel computer(s) and an online booking system that appears on a hostelrys website. The firstsolution in the UK to

provide online booking systems to smaller hotel businesses in2002, CaterBook was developed by Peter Shearn, managingdirector of Cateractive Ltd, in Totnes, Devon.

He was originally involved in hospitality with a diploma course inthe late 1970s and combined that experience with programmingexpertise to create an industry-friendly software solution -industry-friendly being the key, as Peters very aware that noteveryone, is necessarily computer savvy

We take great care to ensure we always communicate clearlyand with an understanding of the hospitality industry, he says.We are a very small team and attention to detail and service isimportant but we are based in technology and our clients are ina non-technical business. Because were not trying to be allthings to all men, CaterBook is very simple to use. It has beencarefully thought out and designed to enable even people withlittle computer-confidence, to work quickly and efficiently.

CaterBook is a commission-free system, so bookings generatedon a hotels own website will not incur charges, and it also delivers detailed reports and financial, domestic and marketingdata, which, says Peter, can be invaluable for generating futurebusiness. Its a system that is proving popular with hoteliers;apart from a packed web page of glowing testimonials,Cateractive has more than 300 clients, mostly in the UK but alsoin Austria, Spain, France and Jersey.

We have several major award-winners in our portfolio and itwould be crass of us to name names as all our clients are important to us, Peter states. However, making an exception, the Somerville is a class leader in what it does. It hasachieved its status through service, attention to detail and plainhard work.

Happy to reflect on a decade of success: The hospitalityindustry has seen a great deal of change over the last 10 yearsand it has been a real privilege to be part of it and grow with it,Peter is excited about the future.

We have now introduced our Apex Channel Managementsystem which provides a total one-stop hotel bookingmanagement package and enables hoteliers to send availabilityand pricing information on to the major reselling agencies in theUK, he reveals.

With an eye on quality we have partnered with big brand namessuch as Booking.com, LateRooms, Lastminute.com, Venere andExpedia along with other major players in other parts of theworld and are adding providers all the time. As a combination ofproperty management system, commission-free own sitebookings and probably the best connected channel managerthere is, I think CaterBook is the UK technology leader whilebeing probably the most affordable. We are very excited.

  • Two years of major development and conservation work

is now completed at St James Priory Bristol, to the

delight of the team and visitors alike.

St James Priory is a very special place, offering healing,

heritage and hospitality in the heart of Bristol,

St James Priory is the oldest building in Bristol and has been a

place of worship offering healing and hospitality, since its

foundation in 1129. It is a monument of immense historical and

    architectural importance.

In the medieval period, St James Priory was home to

Benedictine monks. They lived here as a community of

brothers, devoting their lives to worshipping God and caring for

the poor and the sick. Now, St James Priory provides

residential support and treatment for people suffering from

substance addiction via Walsingham House and St James

House which are adjacent to the church.

    This residential support

    and treatment for

    people with a substance

    dependency is open to

    all in need, whatever

    their background or

    circumstance.

    Like their Benedictine

    predecessors they

    extend a warm welcome

    to all who visit. The

    refectory caf serves

delicious refreshments and the well-equipped meeting rooms

and central locality make St James an ideal venue for

    conferences and community group bookings.

St James is still a place of Christian worship and devotion but is

open to all people from any faith or none. It is a Catholic Church

and is open between 10am and 5pm from Monday to Saturday.

Mass is celebrated each Sunday and Holyday at 8am.

  • 2011 marks the 75th anniversary of Jelf Lampier, one ofBristols leading insurance brokers. As the businesscelebrates its presence in the city since 1936, when itbegan as John Lampier & Son Ltd, Ben Riddell, MarketingDirector recounts five essential facts about the origins ofthe company:

In 1936 in a coffee shop on Baldwin Street, two insuranceinspectors, Ronald Chaffe and Howard Carter decided to start a business to serve the local community. John Lampier & Son Ltd. was born!

There was no Mr. Lampier! Whilst planning their business, one ofChaffe and Carters clients proposed his own Christian namesJohn and Lampier as the company brand.

From 1938 until 1982 John Lampier & Son Ltd. occupiedvarious offices on Baldwin Street before moving into offices onthe first floor of Edgecumbe Hall, Clifton.

In 2007, John Lampier & Son Ltd. was acquired by Jelf. Togetherthe businesses formed the largest Bristol based insurance broker, with an estimated 15 20% share of the local market.

In 2010, Lampier became known as Jelf Lampier. Occupying thewhole of Edgecumbe Hall, it now has 100 members of staff, including a team of 20 sales advisers.

Ben commented further: "75 truly is a landmark for us and weare both delighted and proud to be able to say that we havebeen insuring the city and people of Bristol for such a long time. Here at Jelf Lampier, we are passionate about being, andremaining, a community broker it means a lot to us that we areable to retain our Bristol roots. We would like to say a big thankyou to Bristol for entrusting us with your business and we lookforward to working with the city for the next 75 years!"
