Open for Transformation - Swarthmore Lecture 2014Ben Pink Dandelion.

Ben has worked at Woodbrooke for twenty years, before which he worked for Britain Yearly Meeting on producing resources for learning. He has written and lectured widely around the world on Quaker topics. Ben currently serves as an elder in Sawley Local Meeting. As well as his Quaker experience Ben also has professional experience of academic study of Quakers with a specialism in the Sociology of Religion. He is currently Honorary Professor and Programmes Leader for the Centre for Postgraduate Quaker Studies at the University of Birmingham and both teaches and supervises postgraduate students in a variety of fields.

Ben’s lecture explores the theme of transformation, ending with a call for us as Quakers to return to a transforming and transformational faith.

Being a Quaker - a guide for newcomers.Geoffrey Durham.

Geoffrey Durham's engaging introduction to the life and faith of Quakers today, with its well-judged balance of information, personal experience, spiritual guidance and practical advice, was warmly welcomed when it first appeared in 2011. It has now been revised and updated to incorporate new developments and fresh thinking.

A Light that is Shining - an Introduction to the Quakers.Harvey Gillman.

If you want to find out more about exactly what Quakers are and what they believe, this little book mostly does that and in a nice, conversational style. Very pragmatic in its approach. Terms are defined, a bit of history is covered, and current types of meetings are described in detail. What is missing is theology. The author states that there really isn't a core theology, but also makes numerous references to Quaker values and lifestyle and these are not clearly defined. Very helpful overall though. This book presents the Religious Society of Friends to the general public or inquirers in a readily understood way and suggests further avenues to explore if one is interested.

A Guide to True Peace - or The Excellency of Inward and Spiritual Prayer.Fenelon, Mme. Guyon and Molinos.

This is a practical book. It is for those who want a hands-on guide to inward prayer. It is not a theological work or abstract or argumentative.

This Quaker devotional will give the reader insight into the early Quaker thought emphasis. Mainly a compilation of the works of Guyon, Fenelon, Molinos, it can serve as help during times of prayer and meditation.

I carry it with me wherever I go. I have found that when I have a free moment I can refresh myself by reading a paragraph or two from this work. This always brings me back to that abiding inward presence.

Revised edition of this comprehensive and thoroughly readable introduction to the history of Quakerism, from It's origins in 17th century England to the development of the differing varieties found around the world today. a standard work.

Christian Faith and Practice in the experience of the Society of Friends.

The contents are not intended to be rules, but rather guides and statements of what is normative. The book starts with the following quote from a Letter from Meeting of Elders at Balby, in Yorkshire, England, 1656:Dearly beloved Friends, these things we do not lay upon you as a rule or form to walk by, but that all, with a measure of light which is pure and holy, may be guided: and so in the light walking and abiding, these things may be fulfilled in the Spirit, not in the letter; for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life.

An amazing book full of the spiritual experiences of Friends (Quakers). I love this book.

Journal of George Fox.Edited by John L. Nickalls.

This is the first person account of the founder of the Quakers (Society of Friends), George Fox, and it is the best resource for the life and testimonies of Quakers. It is an exciting read full of action, truth and common sense living.

I have read and re-read this book since first discovering it last year. Anyone seeking spiritual enlightenment and deeper relationship with the living presence of the divine should read it with an open mind. Seek and you shall find the truth that sets you free. Highly recommended for anyone on the spiritual path

Jung and the Quaker Way.Jack H. Wallis

Very thought-provoking...a worthwhile read that helped me make sense of spiritual/psychological concerns that I had been unclear about.

The World in my Heart.Jo Farrow

This book is about journeys, explorations and homecomings written from the perspective of a latecomer to the Society of Friends. Jo Farrow reflects on the experiences which have shaped her life and led her to value Quaker spirituality and feminism, and to integrate them with what has been important for her in the Christian tradition and the insights of humanistic psychology as a way of coming home to herself.

George Fox and the Children of the Light.Jonathan Fryer

George Fox and the Children of the Light is valuable as an illustration of the amazing religious ferment of the mid seventeenth century, when preachers like George Fox could attract huge crowds in market places and churchyards.17th Century England was torn by political and social conflict. But against this background cacophony a firm, pure voice spoke out, denouncing the ostentations of the rich, and the stranglehold of the Church on people’s lives, declaring that every person could communicate directly with God. Fox’s preaching style was often uncompromising, but in his Journal the reader gets a strong sense of the passion and fortitude of a remarkable man struggling against the odds to get his message heard in a society that had little tolerance of dissent.

Joseph Rowntree.Chris Titley

The Rowntree name is linked to some of the most iconic and well-loved brands of the 20th century, including the KitKat, Aero and Fruit Pastilles. On the way he transformed a small factory in York into a global business. But there is much more to the Joseph Rowntree story than chocolate. A prominent Quaker, social reformer, political campaigner and educationalist, he reshaped his home city and improved the welfare of generations of workers. Rather than diminish with his death in 1925, Rowntree's legacy has grown as the charitable trusts he founded become ever-more influential. This fascinating biography traces Joseph Rowntree's life from grocer's son to great Victorian philanthropist and beyond.

Testimony & Tradition - 1990 Swarthmore Lecture. - two copiesJohn Punshon

Peaceful, truthful and simple living is not easy. This lecture gives a personal view of the way the ethical and political principles of contemporary Quakerism are related to the older spiritual tradition from which they spring, and argues that this tradition is indispensable for their continuing vitality.

The Quakers, Money & MoralsJames Walvin

This text tells the story of the Quakers in Britain and the impact they had on British society. It describes how they gradually came to dominate key 18th century industries from iron-making to chemicals, from pharmaceuticals to banking. It provides an account of how in the 19th century they went on to dominate new industries, whether shoemaking, biscuits or chocolate. Barclays, Lloyds, Price Waterhouse, Swan Hunter, Clarks Shoes, Huntley and Palmer, Cadbury's, Fry's and Rowntree's, discussed in the text, all have Quaker origins - as do a wide range of other household names.

A Faith to call our ownAlex Wildwood

This book provides fresh insights on early Friends and meeting for worship today, through a striking personal journey from institutional Christianity into feminism, therapy and 'green' spirituality, arriving at a re-visionary of our Quaker faith.

Godless for God’s SakeEdited by David Boulton

27 Quakers from 13 Yearly Meetings in four countries tell how they combine committed membership of the Religious Society of Friends with rejection of traditional belief in a transcendent, personal and supernatural God. For some of these 'nontheist' Friends, God is no more (but no less) than a symbol of the wholly human values of 'mercy, pity, peace and love'. For others, the idea of God and 'God-language' has become an archaism and a stumbling-block. Readers who seek a faith or world-view free of supernaturalism, whether they are Friends, members of other traditions or drop-outs from old-time religion, will find themselves in the company of a varied group whose search for an authentic 21st century understanding of religion and spirituality has led them to declare themselves 'Godless - for

God's Sake'.

Listening to the LightJim Pym

Quakerism has been a source of inspiration for over 300 years. Combining spirituality with the practical life, its insights have a universal appeal that is particularly relevant to today's world. Quakers deeply value inner peace and tranquility and believe that there is "that of God" within us all. They also have a compassionate determination to alleviate suffering and a profound commitment to peace and non-violence. Listening to the Light shows us how to incorporate Quaker ideals and practices into our lives—to find our own Light-the Divine-within ourselves, to realise that the everyday is spiritual, to simplify our lives and care for the planet, to bring a sense of commitment and integrity to our actions, and to learn to listen.

Our Quaker IdentityAlastair Heron

This title is the sub-title of an excellent little book by Alastair Heron called “Our Quaker Identity”. The book traces the quest for an answer to an issue about the true nature of Quakerism, in the face of declining membership - minuted by York Monthly Meeting in 1859. Alastair has written convincingly of how the concern has never gone away – rather it has been raised as ‘a concern’ over and over again. If you resonate with the issue, I recommend a re-looking at “Our Quaker Identity”. It looks at the issues as perceived by Quakers for at least 150 years. Clearly the question is still very much alive.

Only One Life; a Quaker’s voyageAlastair Heron

Did you know that Alastair Heron was a stoker in a transatlantic cargo ship and that he drove all the way to a job in Africa? From Scotland to Canada, from Australia to Sheffield, this kaleidoscopic story shows a very human man living with his colleagues, family and God.Autobiography of Professor Heron, University of Melbourne, Australia, Directory of Rhodes-Livingstone Institution Zambia; eminent Quaker author.

Finding the Prophetic Voice for our time.Marion McNaughton and Lizz Roe

Prophecy is the theme and both Marion and Lizz have their own distinctive ways of presenting their material and complement each other. it also fits neatly with the different styles of the Old Testament prophets. The prophets were aware that their words were from God and they must speak it. Finding the prophetic voice in our own time is a challenge for Quakers living in the 21st century.

Confident Quakerism - 2 copiesBen Pink Dandelion

Pendle Hill Pamphlet 410. After a personal crisis shock his confidence in himself, Ben pink dandelion considered seriously the spiritual meaning of confidence. His reflections led him to delve into early Friends’ understandings about spiritual growth and religious development, and to apply those principles to the Community of Friends as we practice our Faith today. His insights are especially meaningful for liberal Friends, and as a society, as we look toward the future.

A book of Quaker saintsL.V. Hodgkin (Mrs John Holdsworth)With illustrations by F. Cayley-Robinson, A.R.A. (Stunning water colours!)

The following stories are intended for children of various ages. The introductory chapter, 'A Talk about Saints,' and the stories marked with an asterisk in the Table of Contents, were written first for an eager listener of nine years old. But as the book has grown longer the age of its readers has grown older because it was necessary to take for granted some knowledge of the course of English History at the period of the Civil Wars. To have re-told the story of the contest between King and Parliament, leading up to the execution of Charles the First and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, would have taken up much of the fresh, undivided attention that I was anxious to focus upon the lives and doings of these 'Quaker Saints.’

Portrait in Grey - two copiesJohn Punshon

Accounts of Quaker history written after about the middle of the twentieth century, and especially those covering Quakerism worldwide, seem to be a rare occurrence. Given this scarcity, Punshon is to be commended for attempting to fill the gap. He is clearly a Quaker himself, which adds relevance and insight into the ways in which the historical currents of the Society have influenced its form and practice While not postured as such, this book might appropriately be called "a personal history of the Quakers" due to the tone and reluctance to present a strong thesis of any sort. The prosaic and structural difficulties make this a less than engaging read, but in an area with few alternatives, Punshon provides an adequate history of Quakerism for the curious.

In Fox’s FootstepsDavid and Anthea Boulton

In Fox's Footsteps is the story of three adventurous journeys. The first is a fresh retelling, with much new material, of George Fox's walk in 1652 from Pendle Hill in Lancashire across the Yorkshire Dales to Swarthmoor in the deep south of England's Lake District. It is the journey by a troublesome missionary-agitator which saw the birth of a radical movement derisively called Quakersim which would permanently mark England's religious, political and social life.

Quakers in Wales Today (1997)Meeting of Friends in Wales

Steps in a large roomChristopher Holdsworth

This book begins by explaining how the author’s own experience led him to become interested in the the monastic tradition, and to spend much of his life learning more about it. He is convinced there are things here which may be useful to some Friends. The book moves from outward things, like stability, humility, obedience and regular attendance at public worship, towards other sides of what the tradition calls the exploration of the heart, which he calls an inner space, namely attentive reading of the Bible and prayer.

Living EldershipJenny Routledge

This book explores the sometimes complex relationship Friends have with the idea of Eldership. Reflecting on parallel of early Friends’ travelling ministry and on the experience of having an accompanying Elder, this book is at once an intimate account of spirit-led discover and a powerful exploration of the meaning of eldership in contemporary Quakerism.

Building the Institutions of PeaceJ Duncan Wood

This lecture is based on the assumption that the tradition of Quaker political thinking that Penn initiated remains a living and vital one, to whose cultivation and renewal Friends rightly devote a measure of their time, their energy and their concern. Of necessity the lecture asks more questions than it can answer.

Broken for LifeS. Jocelyn Burnell

The ambiguity of the title Broken for Life reflects the twin themes of this book: broken-for-the-rest-of-life and broken-in-order-to-give-life. It examines living with wounds that won’t mend (quickly) and the healing that the wounded may bring. It discusses situations where there may not be a happy ending and ends with a consideration of the role of brokenness.
