TAFT — How time flies! Flashback to last year we were thrilled to hear Zack won not one but three JBT (Junior Bowlers Tour) honors—Bowler of the Year (All Conference); Handicap All Star (Mojave Conference); and Handicap Bowler of the Year (Southern CA Conference).

This year the JBT Banquet was held at The Terrace in Las Vegas on Sun., July 10 and since Zack was already in Vegas to compete in the TPC (Touring Players Champion-ships), he attended. Zack, who just turned 17, said he “got an unexpected and very appreciated award” as he was se-lected the Scratch Rookie of the Year for the Mojave Con-ference! This JBT season Long won one title and that was at the Tournament of Non-Champions at Let it Roll Lanes in Phoenix, AZ on June 19th. But, add to that, Zack rolled a 300 game at Antelope Lanes in Prescott, AZ, competing in a JBT tournament on March 27th. So even though he didn’t collect a lot of titles this season, he was making a good showing and obviously noticed! He averaged 195 this season in JBT which has their bowlers bowl on dif-ferent patterns every weekend in competition. In contrast, here locally bowling in his Youth league, he booked 213.

Zack ended with “What an amazing season this has been. Man, I can’t wait for the next one!! Huge thank you to Jeff Hemer and Jerod Florez for all of your hard work throughout every season of JBT. This wouldn’t be pos-sible without you guys!” Congratulations, Zack!

WINNETKA – “I was shocked,” Debbie Stelle said.“I was very surprised,” Richard Melendrez said.To be sure, the two bowlers from Canoga Park were

unlikely champions of a no-tap doubles tournament July 9 at Winnetka Bowl.

They certainly weren’t the most feared pair of bowlers in this event that featured a large assortment of some of the elite players in the San Fernando Valley area.

The 80-year-old Melendrez entered the tournament with a 138 average.

The 69-year-old Stelle carried a 135 average.Yet, they were nothing short of spectacular in this three-

game handicap tournament.Melendrez crushed a 616 series (210, 230, 186) and

Stelle chipped in with a stellar 537 series (145, 154, 238). With their sizable handicap, Melendrez and Stelle

rolled up a huge total of 1,584 that proved too much for the 200-average-plus bowlers to match. The dynamic duo won $446 for its first-place effort, outdistancing teams that boasted such elite bowlers as Tim Tripp, Johnnie Engle-hart, Charles Kenny and Matt Jones.

Melendrez said he had bowled previous 600 series but it was a “long time ago. I had bypass [surgery] three, four years ago. I used to have a 15-pound ball and now I use a nine-pounder.”

Altogether, Melendrez took home more than $350 be-cause of his additional winnings during the day.

This marked the second of three no-tap doubles tourna-ments scheduled for Winnetka Bowl during the summer. A whopping 106 bowlers took part, exceeding last month’s event that drew 76 players.

This month’s participants included a large turnout of top-caliber Valley bowlers on the challenging Professional Bowlers Assn. Viper oil pattern.

Finishing 26 points behind the champs at 1,558 was the team of Bob Englehart and Mark Levine, who won $360 for placing second. Englehart, a Valley legend with his towering left-handed backswing, was at his enthusias-tic best during the event, spurred on by his opening 297 game. He finished with an 812 scratch, adding scores of 276 and 239.

Debbie Stelle and Richard Melendrez Shine Brightest in Winning No-Tap Event

by Fred Eisenhammer

Susan Cortez and Joannie Petiya finished third at 1,513 and won $200. Brad Graeff Jr. and Jim Gibbons took fourth at 1,508 and won $100. Dino Reyes and Jackie Herndon scored 1,505 to claim fourth, winning $60.

Jeff Monzella and Matt Jones were the lone bowlers to rack up perfect games. Jones also recorded a 254 en route to a 752 series.

Johnnie Englehart turned in a solid effort with scores of 250, 210 and 278 for a 738 series.

On the heels of that strong performance, Englehart went on to blister an 818 series (259, 300, 259) during league play at Winnetka Bowl. At one point, Englehart posted 22 strikes in a row.

Tripp recorded one of the top scores of the no-tap tour-nament with a 274 en route to a 735 series (244, 274, 217). Kenny had a 690 series, but his big highlight came a day later when he smashed back-to-back perfect games in an-other no-tap tournament.

Winnetka Bowl will host its third no-tap doubles tour-nament of the summer on Aug. 13.

From left, Richard Melendrez, Carl Comrie, Debbie Stelle and Amy Lew. Melendrez and Stelle defied the odds by winning the no-tap tournament title. Comrie and Lew were the event’s co-directors. Photo by Fred Eesenhammer

Los Angeles may not be the capital of the bowling world, but for many, it’s the center of their bowling universe. So in keeping with that L.A.-doesn’t-get-the-respect-it-deserves theme, we’re dedicating a bowling quiz to Los Angeles and its many talented bowlers.

To get in the mood of taking the Los Angeles Bowling Quiz, here’s some bowling humor:

West Covina Lanes Saturday Qualify 1:00-2:30-4:00 & 6:00 PM Semifinals 8:00PM Single elims FollowMatch Series est $1,000 – Match Game est $1,475 – Mystery Doubles est $900

NORWALK—A light turnout, but lots of fun at Keystone Lanes. Jaimee Pantuan stepped up and won her first ABTA Title taking a sweet $2,500 home to Cerritos by downing top seed Raul Aldaz in the Title game. She won 5 straight matches in the single elimi-nation roll-offs, not an easy task.

Cut scores were on low-er side but fair to all with Men +60 and Ladies +10! Super Seniors added were, two men and one woman, Ed Palma +61, Eric Will +59 and Veronica Boone -3. Top Qualifiers were Tomas Chavez +122 men and Gina Verlarde +88 led the ladies. They receive paid entries to any regular event for the fine bowling.

Tomas and Gina drew for the Match Series worth $485 & drew 692. No Win-ner! The Mystery Doubles 474 also no winner worth $490. They carryover to Action Lanes.

The 3-6-9 Pot carried over as Edmund Del Mundo missed on Shot t# 2 going for $1,000! Edmund got a $100 Consolation so we go for $1,100 Saturday.

The semis began and we saw Raul Aldaz lead the field +113 and in 2nd was Bert Pamintun +99. So Raul will sit out and bowl for the

title with Bert entering the top 16 single elms in round two! Aldaz drew a 107 for the Match Game worth $665 and UN matched. We estimate the Match Game at $1,450 Saturday at West Covina Lanes.

It took only a +29 to make the Single Elim Fi-nals which included 3 la-dies. Glen Tse and his good friend Annie Liao tied at +29. Annie wins the 9-10 frame roll off to advance to to Finals. Glen in 17th place.

Finalists losing in the first round in 10-16th plac-

es were Sierrie Herradura, Tomas Chavez, Danny Eguilos, Mike Moore, Jing Lebaquin, Michael Zhang and the “Pride of Bakers-field” Chris Gregory. They got checks of $100.

6-9th places were Con-rad Amado, Chris Abing Annie Liao and Ferdinand Alarcio! Round 3, being eliminated were Bert Pa-mintuan and Carlos Umana who finished in 4th and 5th.

Now down to top 3! Du Quach vs Jaimee Pamin-tuan for the right to bowl Raul Aldaz for the title!

What a close game. It went to the final ball/pin. DU had some bad Luck as Jai-mee advanced in a big way. A late strike fell for Jaimee and she wins a thriller 247-239 with hcp. to advance to the title game. Mr. Quach was 3rd with nice bowling and $200.

The title game was also higher scoring and close.Jaimee led but Raul stayed with her until he chopped a spare and then split. Jaimee with only one open wins her first ever ABTA Title via 238-212. All scores including handicap and it can’t go to a finer lady. She beat one of the Good Guys. Good things happen to Good People. Congrats Jaimee, title #2 is next.

Jaimee is from Cerritos, used her 900 Global/Re-spect drilled by Ben Mach. $100 BONUS and wants to thank Ed Palma for giving her the ball. She’s single and usually bowls with her Dad, Bert. Her Mom Vir-gie was on hand to see her win her first championship. By the way dad finished 4th at Keystone!

Raul Aldan, a past champion, aka Raz Mataz is from Whittier, used an Alpha/Crux Storm drilled by Roger at Beverly Bowl and he is single. He is a true Premiere Lanes bowler of the past and one of the Good Guys.

Du “Andy” Quach is from Rosemead, used his Storm drilled by Gerard at Action Lanes and wants to thank his bowling buddies for their support. He is a barber, haircutter by trade and a damn good one in San Gabriel. A long time

faithful ABTA Member many years and is also One of the Good guys.

Thank YOU to the fine staff at Keystone and to Randy and Reggie for a tough but very fair shot!! One of the Best, and we re-turn there for sure!

It was good to see our friends from Bakersfield at Keystone. The Curtis’ John and “Iron Mike” along with Chris Gregory and Bob Long! Great People here! Lots of good men in B Field :-)

Los Angeles Clippers all-star point guard Chris Paul has been named ESPN’s second annual Sports Humanitarian of the Year for using the power of sports to make a positive impact on society, ESPN announced Wednesday.

Paul and his family have dedicated themselves to helping children through the Chris Paul Family Foundation. The Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Bowling Invitational, which airs annually on ESPN, is one of the events that contributes to the foundation.

After opening a newly-refurbished Boys & Girls Club in Watts, Paul said, ““It hit me that it’s not fair…that a kid on this side of town doesn’t have the same opportunities as a kid on the other side of town.”

For his work with the Boys & Girls Club and his dedication to helping the commu-nity, Paul received the April 2015 NBA Cares Community Assist Award in recognition of his outstanding charitable contributions and philanthropy, one of three community assist awards he received in his career. Paul and his family foundation have made a $1 million commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, from Los Angeles to his hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C., where he established the Nathaniel Jones Scholar-ship Fund at Wake Forest, providing one athletic and one academic full-ride scholarship to the school.

With charitable efforts such as his annual Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Bowling Invita-tional and his TopSpin Celebrity Ping Pong Tournament in Las Vegas, he’s also found ways to raise money in exciting and fun ways, often bringing in other celebrities to help the cause.

“As a lot of people know, we really focus on putting technology and computer labs in underprivileged schools,” Paul said during his 2016 bowling event. “Events like this, while they’re fun and give people the opportunity to entertain and have a good time, it’s all going to a great cause. It’s always a lot of fun, and it’s good to have some new faces.”

PBA champions Jason Belmonte, Ryan Ciminelli and Anthony Simonsen – three of the four nominees for the “Best Bowler” ESPY award – attended the event (visit the Photo Gallery on pba.com for photos: http://www.pba.com/PhotoGalleries/Details/348). The fourth nominee – Sweden’s Jesper Svensson – was unable to attend. Belmonte won the ESPY for the second year in a row and the third time overall.

Letters To The EditorI just love it when you have articles about the old

days… I graduated from high school in 1959, so all of this info about bowling at that time brings back so many great memories.

You mentioned EASY LANES in Signal Hill, but you never heard of it. If you don’t mind, I can pass along a little of what I remember…I do know that the main prin-cipal of this little 8-lane house was Billy Maglione, and if memory serves me right, he had a partner by the name of Norm Fesler.

Both were in their prime as top SoCal bowlers in 1959, so in an effort to kick-start their new house, they convinced a good number of the big L.A. shooters to come down and bowl a summer open league there as part of their grand opening.

Since I lived over by Cal Bowl, it was only a two or three mile drive south to go watch our great SoCal bowlers without having to drive all the way to Vermont Bowl. My memory is foggy as to whether they were still employing pin boys that summer or not, but it was a real treat having the big boys visit my town.

Keep up the good work…I just love trivia like this.Terry Brent

Editor:Thank you for endorsing Steven Felege’s “The Essen-

tials of Bowling:Approaching the Perfect Game:2nd Edi-tion”.

This book is a must have for every bowler looking for a well illustrated guide to learn, teach, and understand the technique to bowl effectively. Not since the 70’ have I seen such a well-written guide which empowers bowlers to seek out the preferred method of Bowling.

Throughout the 70 page book the author breaks down the basic fundamentals of Bowling into five well written and concise chapters. Each area is well illustrated which facilitates the learning process by demonstrating how each of the five areas ought to be utilized. I simply cannot thank you enough.

Sincerely, Farhod Azarbaydjani

MONTCLAIR — Anne Clifford had been running our Friday Strokers League for over 25 years. It is a desig-nated league for those who have had strokes, heart attacks, debilitating accidents or sicknesses that have limited their ability to bowl or function as they used to. The league consists of a wonderful group of dedicated bowlers who love to bowl. Some of them have been using special con-structed ramps for their use. We have dedicated people and bowlers who move the ramps where they are to be placed at the foul line. And help by placing the bowling balls on the ramps for those that need them. This is a happy league and a very fun loving league. They were previously bowling at Covina Bowl but now have moved it to Bow-lium Lanes in Montclair. They are extending an invitation to anyone who would like to bowl with us and have a won-derful time doing so.

The league also wore red noses shown in the photo on Red Nose Day to raise awareness and funds for helping children and having fun. Proceeds benefitted children and young people in the U.S. and some of the poorest com-munities in the world.

The fees are set at $5.00 and they bowl 2 games per week. This league has started this past Friday. It is a no-tap league with 8 pins on your first ball rolled becoming a strike. The league will be starting in the winter with regu-lation bowling in the fall. Usually about the first week of September. If you are interested in joining the league you may call the association at (626) 337-6270 and ask for Chris Pilios or Linda Johnson-Pilios. We will answer any question you may have. We hope to see you there. Also we have had those who are confined to wheelchairs bowl with you. Sincerely Chris Pilios

BURBANK — I think I can safely say the heat is drag-ging almost all of us down. It’s brutal out there!

The bowling center is usually a “cool” place to hang out in this weather and many take advantage of the AC. However, here’s a word of warning. Most centers do not have air conditioning but have swamp cooling instead. This makes for a humid atmosphere on the lanes and when it’s turned up, the humidity gets even higher. You sweat, your ball sweats, the lane surface sweats. So to speak anyway.

The warning is to watch for lane conditions being differ-ent and the approaches to be a bit damp. Your fingers and thumb may swell and become sticky in the ball. Be prepared. Be sure to have all the things you like to use to combat humid conditions with you, even if you’re not in Louisiana.
