THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a MOSES SAID TO the people: “Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep his commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers, in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.

“Do not forget the LORD, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery; who guided you through the vast and terrible desert with its saraph serpents and scorpions, its parched and waterless ground; who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock and fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your fathers.”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL Psalm 147: 12-13, 14-15, 19-20, Marier

Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. O Jerusalem, glorify the Lord! O Zion, praise your God! He has strengthened your gates; he has blessed your children within you. He established peace on your borders; He gives you your fill of finest wheat. He sends out his word to the earth, and swiftly runs his command. He reveals his word to Jacob; To Israel, his decrees and judgments. He has not dealt thus with other nations; He has not taught them his judgments.

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 10: 16-17 BROTHERS AND SISTERS: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE Ecce Panis Angelorum, Mode VII Text: Verses from Lauda Sion by St. Thomas Aquinas, +1274

Behold this Bread of Angels which hath become food for us on our pilgrimage; it is truly the bread of God’s children, let it ne’er be thrown to dogs. Scripture announced it figuratively by Isaac’s sacrifice, by the paschal lamb and by the manna given to our ancestors. O Good Shepherd and most true bread of life, Lord Jesus, have mercy on us; feed and protect us, bring us to the vision of eternal riches in the land of the living. Thou who knowest and canst accomplish all things, who dost feed us in this mortal life, make us thy chosen guests, the co-heirs and companions of thy saints in the heavenly city.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, Mode VIII V. I AM THE LIVING BREAD that came down from heaven, says the Lord;

Whoever eats this bread will live forever.

GOSPEL John 6:51-58 JESUS SAID TO the Jewish crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Grant, O Lord, we pray, that we may delight for all eternity in that share in your divine life, which is foreshadowed in the present age by our reception of your precious Body and Blood. Who live and reign for ever and ever.

BENEDICTION

Pange Lingua / Tantum Ergo Sacramentum, Mode III St. Thomas Aquinas, 1225–1274

Sing, O my tongue, and praise the mystery of the glorious body and the most precious blood, shed to save the world by the King of the nations, the fruit of a noble womb.

In the face of so great a mystery, therefore, let us bow down and worship; let precepts of the Ancient Law give way to the new Gospel rite; and let faith assist us and help us make up for what senses fail to perceive.

Unto the Father and the Son, our praise and our joyful singing; unto whom saving power, honour and might, and every holy blessing; and to the Spirit who proceeds from both, an equal tribute of glory

THE DIVINE PRAISES

Blessed be God. Blessed be his Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man. Blessed be the Name of Jesus. Blessed be his most Sacred Heart. Blessed be his most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.
