The young boy was watching his father, the rabbi, prepare a sermon. “How do you know what to write?” he asked. The father explained, “after

I think a while, God tells me what to write.” The son scratched his head and then asked: “then why do you keep crossing out so much?” As we prepare for the Days of Awe, perhaps we can provide a clearer answer to the boy’s question. The rabbi crossed out so much because he heard the voice of God not before, but after he had written the original draft. The Almighty gives us the chance to do our thing first; afterwards God moves us to improve the script that we have written.

In Rabbi David Wolpe’s book Healer of the Shattered Hearts, he offers this story. The eminent physicist I. Rabi was asked to name the most significant intellectual influence in his life. The interviewer expected to hear names like “Einstein” or “Newton.” Instead Dr. Rabi replied, “my Mother.” Each day, he explained, when he returned from “cheder,” the Jewish day school, his pious Mother asked him, “Isaac, did you ask any good questions today?” I learned, said Dr. Rabi, that the key to wisdom is to ask good questions. His Mother, growing up in the Eastern European ghetto, had learned a crucial principle of Jewish thought. All things must be weighed, scrutinized and evaluated.

This month of Elul, the period of examination before we celebrate Rosh Hashonah, we have many questions to weigh. Why is the world so much more chaotic than even last year? Why the spread of terrorism across our land, as well as the nations of the Middle East and Africa? Why is Israel living in such a precarious position, as this new U.S.-Iran political agreement is under review by our

Congress? Why the scourge of gun violence that plagues our country?

All of us have read numerous commentators and analysts on the proposed Iran deal.

Thanks to our congregants Phil Goldstone and John Liebman, we listened to an excellent program on this subject, with the support of the local Council of International Relations. Many policy experts claim that this is the “best deal” possible, amidst a host of problematic political solutions. Personally I view this agreement as untenable, and a greater threat to Israel. This deal, in the words of Michael Steinhardt, “will grant Iran unearned international legitimacy along with up to $150 billion in frozen assets. The monies will not go to the Iranian people, but instead bolster the Iranian war machine,

which sponsors Shiite militias in Iraq, Houthi armies in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza and the Assad regime in Syria.” On a grand scale, this deal allows Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. It does not require the dismantling of vast elements of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, including the Natanz uranium enrichment facility and its centrifuges, and the Arak plutonium production plant. I am not willing to hand a blank check to the Iranian government which will enable them to potentially destroy Israel.

To be clear, this is my personal opinion, and as I offer you these thoughts, I do so with humility, knowing that my knowledge is limited. But during this time, as we prepare our families and our congregation for an important High Holiday season, it is vital that we ask tough questions of our legislators, our senators and our congressmen. During the holidays, we yearn for peace, we ask the Almighty to forgive our mistakes and sins, and repair relationships that have been broken. Thus it is our time to ask good questions, and pray that we can strengthen our world, our families, and Beit Tikva.

From my family to yours, I wish you a healthy and contented season, days of blessings and peace.

Shanah tovah,

pReSIdenT’S meSSAge

dear Friends,

gail and I were working on the Rosh Hashanah “Honey Project” a few weeks ago. Our first assignment from our honey chair, Sharon Sorken,

was to update the member list for use by the internet HappyRoshHashanna folks who process all the aspects of this fund raiser. By the way, this was a fabulously successful fund raiser last year yielding over $5.000!

What Gail and I uncovered was that for the year ending June, 13 new member families were added to our roles; a tidy sum. Frankly, this number is expected to increase between now and years’ end. We have an unbeatable team. Success is inevitable. • CantorEphraimHerrerahasbroughtgreatenthusiasm,a fresh musical approach, and duets with our congregants, piano accompaniment and more. Ephraim will be on the pulpit with Rabbi Levy twice monthly at least until the end of the year. • WehaveanenthusiasticfulltimeRabbiwhoisproviding well attended Shabbat services, adult education classes, Shabbat Torah study sessions, a Sunday school beginning in the fall and involvement with the Santa Fe rabbinate and greater Santa Fe clergy. If Rabbi Levy has not personally contacted you please have patience. He will be reaching out to you.• Severaltemplemembershavedonatedtheirtimetodevelop and co-sponsor current events activities. One such program was co-chaired by our Vice President Phil Goldstone and temple member John Liebman along with the Santa Fe Council on International Relations (CIR) on the subject of the proposed Iran/US nuclear agreement. If you were unable to attend I’m sure you have heard how interesting this was. You will have other opportunities going forward.• Thesinglegreatestmembergeneratinggroupisyou;our current membership. Our Shabbat attendance runs approximately 25% of the membership. Turnout is wonderful. Even more than mere numbers, however, is the warmth the attendees show each other, especially to guests and visitors who arrive at our door by finding us on the internet and/or members bringing non-member friends.

Did you know this is the 20th anniversary of Congregation Beit Tikva? The board has been discussing celebrating this one-time event for early November. We need your help. If you would like to be involved in this please call or email me as soon as possible.

Each of you have areas of expertise. Your education and experience potentially provides the temple with successes waiting to happen. You don’t have to be a committee chair. I understand not everyone’s priorities include time to do it all. Think about it. Surely you have performed activities that would be helpful to temple life. This could be as simple as accelerating the payment of your dues. Do I really need to remind you about the problems associated with cash flow. Several of you, for very legitimate reasons, hold off paying your dues until at or near years end. Ouch, that hurts. Most, if not all of you, donated your time to other religious or charitable organizations over the years. Share your experiences. There are openings on the temple board. Step up where you can.

The High Holidays are fast approaching. As I have done each of my years as your President I will be making a Kol Nidre appeal. I don’t do this to annoy you. I do this to convince you that in order to operate the temple and afford its staff we need funds from you in several ways. The flat tax won’t work here. We ask you for annual dues. We ask you to commemorate life cycle events with donations. We sell you bricks. We call upon you for a special year end appeal. We sell you parts of the building. Most are quite attractive: an office, sculpture, decorations, etc. Some are not so nice: a widened driveway (thank you Howard Aronow, of blessed memory). Don’t let your fellow congregants down. Let’s continue to look to the future for growth and success.

this year there will be a congregation Beit tikva high holy days fundraiser that will

be fun and sweet. For our second year

we are still limiting the fundraiser to congregation Beit tikva members.

here is how it works. For just $3 per recipient, you can send a L’Shana Tova honey jar to a member of our congregation. of course, you can send to more than one member. For $180 you would be sending to every Beit tikva member. Members would receive one jar of honey plus a card with the names of their well wishers. the jars of honey and the attached cards would be picked up on rosh hashanah at services.

We are looking forward to all members of our congregation participating in our first L’Shana Tova fund raiser.

L’Shana Tova Honey

By now you have received an email for our Rosh Hashanah L’Shana Tova Honey Project with your personal code and instructions on how to place your order.  for those of you who have placed your order, thank you. the deadline to order is september 1, 2015.

if you need assistance with your order please contact me at [email protected] or 505.471.0527.

Let’s make this L’shana tovah the sweetest ever with your holiday wishes and a jar of honey to members of our congregation.

pilgrimage festivals, Sukkot has an agricultural element. It marks the time of the harvest, of the final ingathering of produce before winter. The most important ritual of Sukkot is “living” in the Sukkah. There is a custom of inviting ushpizin, or symbolic guests, each day to join us in the Sukkah. The other important mitzvah is that of the arba minim, the 4 species, also called the lulav and esrog (palm branch and citron).

Come and enjoy the afternoon and early evening in and around the Sukkah and along our walkway and bench area in our breathtaking outdoor space. Don’t miss this wonderful occasion as we gather as a community to celebrate the fall harvest, and rejoice in God’s blessings.

Santa Fe JFF Opens Season with “Rosenwald”

What does Julius Rosenwald, a son of german-Jewish immigrants who helped build Sears, Roebuck, have in common

with W.e.B. duBois, gordon parks, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, and marian Anderson? Rosenwald’s foundation gave each of these prominent African-Americans a fellowship that enabled them to pursue their fields of interest.

The Rosenwald Fellowships are just part of Julius Rosenwald’s legacy and accomplishments detailed in Aviva Kempner’s newest film, “Rosenwald”. The Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival is opening its sixth season on October 3rd with the new mexico premiere of this acclaimed documentary, with ms. Kempner (“Yoo Hoo mrs. goldberg”) in person.

The season opening continues on October 4th with the screening of another of ms. Kempner’s films, “The Story of Hank greenberg”. described as “a

grand slam” by the Wall Street Journal, the film tells the story of the Jewish Jackie Robinson. greenberg was a quiet hero whose life story is the stuff of legends. Ball park hot dogs (kosher, of course) and other ball park food will be served after the screening.

For more information, visit www.SantaFeJFF.org or call 505.216.0672.

Doris Francis Reports on the Jewish Cemetery Wall ConstructionJeWish coMMunity counciL oF northern neW Mexico (JccnnM)

In 1996 a beautiful stone wall was built along the perimeter of the original dedicated Jewish

area of Santa Fe Memorial Gardens Cemetery. We have outgrown our original cemetery site and have tripled the amount of land for Jewish burial. We now need to extend the wall, which marks our Jewish cemetery area, to shelter and protect the present and future generations. This is the only Jewish cemetery in Santa Fe. Please generously help us with this worthy cause that benefits all the Jews buried in Santa Fe and unites all our traditions together in one cemetery.

No matter what your personal plans are for eternal rest, the Jewish community of Santa Fe needs your help today. 80% ($45,000) of the $65,000 funds needed to complete the beautiful stone wall surrounding the dedicated Santa Fe Jewish Cemetery has been raised. We will start construction on the extension of the existing wall as soon as the remaining $20,000 needed for construction has been raised. We had hoped to start construction and possibly finish before the High Holidays this year. Please help us raise the remaining $20,000. All contributors will be honored at the special Remembrance Event held on September 20, at 1:30 pm at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens. Any amount is most appreciated. It should be noted that donations of $5,000 or more will be included on a stone bench that will be placed in the Jewish Cemetery area for rest and contemplation when visiting this section of the cemetery. Please send your generous contribution to: Jewish Community Council of Northern New Mexico (JCCNNM)1000 Cordova PlaceBox 173Santa Fe, NM 87505Or, contribute on line at Jccnnm.org.
