Every Friday since November 2012, we’ve been
keeping you up-to-date with project goings-on
via the weekly update.
From our humble beginnings with a map and a
picture of roadwork (that’s David on the left
with our first issue) we’ve now reached 250
issues and we couldn’t be prouder.
Thanks to everyone who took part in our special
photo shoot, and to all those who contribute
pics and stories, read, share and love our
update!

A VERY BUZZY CHRISTMAS
SANTA CLAUS HAS BEEN A BUSY BEE: The B2Hub team is celebrating their first
Christmas in an activity-based working space, and even the Christmas cake had
bees on it! It was great to see them using the social space (kitchen, diner and
courtyard) exactly the way we planned. Thanks to Xioli for the wonderful cake,
and Bel and her team of elves for organising the lunch! To share your Christmas
pics, just drop us an email!
GIVING SEASON SAFE AND SECURE
THUMBS UP: It was a big thumbs up for our Security
team this week who inspected their new digs in Building B.
The existing Security office will move early next year to
allow for the acute services building development, and that
means a light, bright new office for our 24/7 team.
BETTER WATCH OUT: Santa has come competition when
it comes to gift giving! The Mount Druitt Auxiliary Ladies
Committee donated over $30,000 of medical equipment to
Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology and the Children’s Ward
at Mount Druitt Hospital this week. Their hard work selling
items at the Hospital Gift Shop, hosting a monthly stand at
Plumpton Marketplace and Bunnings and regular raffles
have enabled them to raise these funds to support their
local hospital. Thank you so much for your support!

HANDS UP FOR VOLUNTEERING A massive thank you to our
wonderful volunteer army
who celebrated with a special
lunch at Rooty Hill RSL this
week.
Our volunteers work in all
kinds of roles n our hospitals,
They raise funds, assist on
wards, and work in meal
programs, wayfinding,
emergency department,
transport and welcome roles.
We can’t begin to tell you
how much we appreciate
you!
WE CARDIOLOGY
RED ROUNDUP: This week our Project RED alert is shining
a spotlight on an incredible initiative making real changes to
our cardiology patients. The daily rounding looks at up to 50
in-patients via the journey board and helps inform clinical
care. For more info, check the attached alert.
Above, NUM Gloria, OT Janet, medical officer Imran, and
cardiology advanced trainee John at the rounding.
And don’t forget our staff pizza lunches - details attached!
HANDS DOWN THE BEST EVER
HANDY WORK: Don’t forget the annual tree decorating
competition is coming up on 20 December at Blacktown and
Mount Druitt. When we said last week that we’re throwing
down the gauntlet and challenging you to tinsel up, we
weren’t kidding. Kristy from our office created her work of
art out of 40 PPE safety gloves. That’s hands down the best
(and safest) wreath we’ve ever seen!

PAEDIATRICS
Every weekday at 8.30am, you will find our
cardiology nursing, medical, allied heath and
support staff in a journey board rounding meeting
in C62, working through the list of every cardiology
in-patient at Blacktown.
Up to 50 patients a day are reviewed by the team
to identify opportunities to enhance their care,
address issues such as extended length of stay or
treatment delays, and facilitate their discharge.
NUM Gloria Miranda said the meeting had
transformed cardiology care simply by asking
‘what’s the best thing we can do for that patient
today?’
“The daily meeting allows us to quickly identify
emerging issues and rapidly intervene. For instance,
what are the key things our patients are waiting for,
and how can we work together as a team to get
those things done?” Gloria said.
“We have the meeting early in the morning so that
from the beginning of the day, we all know the plan
and we are all on the same page.”
Following the rounding, and again regularly during
the day, NUMs Gloria Miranda and Meera Patel
communicate with each other and CNC Leanne
Everist about patients in the Blacktown and Mount
Druitt EDs, and the Cardiac Catheterisation Lab.
They work together to prioritise patients and
streamline flow to the appropriate wards.
“This is called the patient pull model because it
allows us to ‘pull’ all the cardiology patients into
the appropriate setting for care,” Leanne said.
“Together, patient pull and rounding provide our
cardiology clinical leads with a very accurate picture
of transfers, discharges and issues for rapid
escalation.
“A wholistic approach looks at all the systems and
process in the patient journey, and it’s really
changed the experience of care in our units," she
said.
The cardiology rounding has been so successful that
Project RED will now facilitate the rollout of the
model to other units.
“Cardiology has a mature, well-developed and very
effective model for enhancing the patient
experience and improving patient flow,” said Klaus
Engelhardt, Director Innovation and Redesign.
“It’s powerful because it’s clinician-led, and we are
confident other departments will really benefit
from it when we implement it more widely next
year.”
