Overview of BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers

BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers provides the ability to monitor and manage your Microsoft Windows, UNIX®, and Linux® environments, including log files. The product monitors IT infrastructure elements using remote methods such as Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), System Monitor (known as Performance Monitor or Perfmon in earlier versions of Windows), and secure shell (SSH). These methods allow agentless monitoring.

This version of BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers includes the following components:

Table 4 Corrected problems

Tracking ID Description (part 1 of 2)

QM001551267 CPU Usage on AIX solutions using SSH was showing an average in the alarm ranges via profiles, but overall it was reporting on the total values.

QM001568646 On a AIX system, the user was not able to monitor kernel related processes.

QM001572131 Using command shell option, the user was not able to monitor defunct processes using UNIX process.

QM001581034 The memory parameters on HPUX 11.23 Itanium operating system failed to provide data.

QM000540793 Incorrect zero values were reported for Swap parameters when collector could not get data resulting in warning or alarm conditions.

Problems corrected in version 2.7.06

QM001661736 On the monitored element the FileSystem data was not collected automatically even after the ACS error message "BMC-2AL020009E - File Systems application class failed to collect data."issue was resolved.

Problems corrected in version 2.7.05

QM001656277 A monitored server was rebooted and a UNIX Process monitored on the box kept showing up as "down" in BMC Portal even though the process was up.

Problems corrected in version 2.7.04

QM001618833 On a UNIX system, when the polling by BMC Performance Manager Express solution for servers and the increase in uptime hour counter occurred simultaneously, the System Uptime parameter displayed zero.

QM001631932 If you did not have root privileges on HP-UX, the Memory Capacity and the Memory Free parameters displayed the value 0 and No Data respectively.

QM001630501 Command options for determining the paging statistics were incompatible with the Sysstat utility version 9.0.3. This resulted in no collection of data or parameters such as Disks, Paging, and so on.

Problems corrected in version 2.7.03

QM001615708 If a command, executed on an element in a polling cycle, stopped responding, then in every polling cycle, a new process was spawned for the same command.

Problems corrected in version 2.7.02

QM001578729 When the process id for a monitored process was assigned to a different process, you received the following error message:

java.lang.NullPointerException.:DR2AL-processmonitor.

Open issue in BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux

Open issue in BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux

The following issue remains open in the version 2.7.50 of BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux:

Monitoring Large Zone Environments

If you are monitoring an environment that has more than 5 zones, each having 20 projects and each of them is resource-capped with the default collection and reporting interval (that is, 5 minutes), then there might be gaps in reporting the data points. Alarms and warnings may be delayed.

As a workaround for this issue, increase the default collection and reporting interval. Remember that monitoring performance is directly proportional to the number of zones to be monitored, the number of active projects in each zone, and capping assigned to each project.

QM001578815 While monitoring a process with arguments, UNIX Process Monitoring raised a NullPointerException if there were any other instances with the same process name but without any arguments.

QM001576090 If the same process was running with multiple instances created by multiple users, process monitoring did not distinguish between the processes based on the process owner criteria.

QM001619751 When the BMC Performance Manager Express solution for servers was upgraded from version 2.6.30 to version 2.7.00, the Disk Include Regex configuration property used the default value (.*) as well as the override value.

Problems corrected in version 2.7.01

QM001579067QM001551577

On IBM AIX 6.1 TL2 SP2, the Application Collection Status parameter displayed an exception as shown in the following example:

BMC-PM-Express-for-Servers-Unix-Linux.For input string: "2048MB":dr2al_aix_virtual

What’s new in BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Log Management

BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Log Management has been enhanced with the following changes and new features.

Added property

The Matched Content Size property is added to the Log application class. With this property, you can define the size of the matched data in the Matched Content parameter and event.

The default value is 1000.

NOTE If you prefer to monitor using SNMP, use the Performance Manager Editor (PME) to create a custom Performance Manager that uses SNMP for data collection. For more information, see the BMC Performance Manager Portal Monitoring and Management Guide and the BMC Performance Manager Portal online Help.

NOTE If you enter a value exceeding 1000 in the Matched Content Size text box, it will not be reflected on BMC Portal. BMC Portal does not support this property but once supported the value of the Matched Content Size text box can exceed 1000.

1. In the navigation pane on the left side of the Portal page, click the configured Log application under Log Management.

2. Click the Configure tab.

3. Click the Edit button and scroll down to the parameter thresholds that you want to change.

This changes the threshold for all newly discovered log files. To change thresholds for a specific discovered log, click on the discovered log to change its thresholds.

Internationalization or localization information

BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers supports the languages indicated in the following table. Support for a language is indicated by a plus sign (+). A blank cell indicates no support.

Table 7 Open issues and workarounds

Tracking ID Issue

QM001557681 On Windows, a log file with a percent character (%) in the password is not monitored.

QM001529750 If you are monitoring log files that grow by more than the default read limit of 1,000 lines (UNIX) or 98,304 bytes (Windows) during one collection cycle, two issues can occur:

■ If your log files are growing faster than the default read limit during a collection cycle, alarms and warning for matched search strings might be delayed.

■ If your log files are growing faster than the default read limit during a collection cycle and you set Only Monitor Latest File to true, some log file lines might be skipped when transitions from the current log file to the new log file are monitored.

Workaround: Increase the read limit on the RSM computer by following the instructions in “Adjusting the read limit” in the online Help. Alternatively, use an agent-based product.

Prerequisites for installation

Prerequisites for installation

This section describes software, hardware, or other requirements for BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers that are not discussed in the installation guide. For more information about all requirements, see the installation guide.

BMC product requirements

BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers requires the following components:

■ BMC Performance Manager Portal version 2.6 or later■ Remote Service Monitor (RSM) version 2.6 or later

If you are using version 2.6 of BMC Performance Manager Portal,

■ Apply patch version 2.6.00.094 of BMC Performance Manager Portal before you upgrade to version 2.7.50 of BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Windows solution. If you fail to do so, you will not be able to see some of the newly added application classes (for example, VM CPU, VM Memory, and so on) and parameters (for example, Swap Space Utilization, Physical Memory Configured, and so on). This may also create problems for future solution upgrades on the same BMC Performance Manager Portal version. The 2.6.00.094 patch is available at the following location: ftp://ftp.bmc.com/pub/BPMPortal/2.6/2.6.00.094.zip

■ If you have not applied the patch version 2.6.00.060 of BMC Performance Manager Portal, you need to copy the patsdk-wmi-solution-2.6.00.060.par and patsdk-perfmonsolution-2.6.00.060.par files to the RSMInstallationDir\server\rsm\solutions directory on the RSM computer. These files are available in patch version 2.6.00.060 of BMC Performance Manager Portal. If the files are not copied properly, the Application Collection Status parameter displays an error about the WmiCollector. Before you copy the files, stop the RSM service and restart it after copying the files. You can download this patch from the following location: ftp://ftp.bmc.com/pub/BPMPortal/2.6/BPM_Patch_ALL_2600060.zip. The BPM_Patch_ALL_2600060.zip file contains the 2.6.00.060_RSM.zip file, which contains the patsdk-wmi-solution-2.6.00.060.par and patsdk-perfmonsolution-2.6.00.060.par files.
