3.Listen: “We will have a great time this year in 4th grade!” Yell: “Number 3” Do: Run to the white board and write “Ancient people”. Yell: “Ancient people lived in Utah thousands of years ago.” Do: Spin around one time, then go sit down.

4.Listen: “Ancient people lived in Utah thousands of years ago.” Do: Stand on or next to your chair Yell: “Number 4” Yell: “We will learn about five Indian tribes. Teacher, please write on the board: Navajo, Shoshone, Goshute, Paiute, and Utes”. Do: Climb down and sit in your chair.

5.Listen: “Navajo, Shoshone, Goshute, Paiute, and Utes.” Yell: “Number 5” Do: Skip to the front of the classYell: “Utah’s Indians knew how to use their natural resources to survive”. Do: Go stand in one corner of the room. Stay there until someone tells you to take your seat.

8.Listen: “The people in the corners may all take a bow and sit down.” Yell: “Number 8.” Do: Run to the front of the class and stretch your arms wide in front of you. Yell: “Mountain men crossed the wide continent looking for furs.” Then return to your seat and sit down.

9.Listen: “Mountain men crossed the wide continent looking for furs.” Yell: “Number 9” Do: Pretend to put on a fancy hat, then walk slowly to the front of the class.Yell: “Beaver fur hats were all the rage in the big cities, and mountain men trapped beavers by the thousands.” Do: Pretend to tip your hat, then return to your seat and sit down.

10.Listen: “--mountain men trapped beavers by the thousands.” Yell “Number 10” Do: Walk all the way around the room and stop at the white board like you’ve found something amazing. Write on the board “Jim Bridger”. Yell: “Jim Bridger was the first white man to discover the Great Salt Lake”. Do: Walk back around the room and return to your seat.

11.Listen: “Jim Bridger was the first white man to discover the Great Salt Lake.” Yell: “Number 11” Do: Sit on the groundYell: “But Jim Bridger wasn’t the only person to come to the Salt Lake Valley”. Sit down in your chair.

Yell: “Pioneers traveled more than a thousand miles to Utah. They used covered wagons, handcarts, or walked and walked and walked”. Slowly walk all the way back around the room and sit down again.

15.Listen: “Hip, hip, hooray” Yell: “Number 15”. Do: Walk hunched over, slowly to the front.Yell: “It was hard, tiring work to grow crops in a desert”. Do: Yawn then go lay down in the corner until someone tells you to stand up.

Yell: “Number 17” Do: Make noises like a choo-choo train as you walk up to the front of the class Yell: “Even though they weren’t admitted as a state, many more people came to Utah territory when the transcontinental railroad was completed”. Make more train sounds on your way back to your seat.

There were even conflicts between the Mormons and the US government.” Shake your head slowly and return to your seat.

19.Listen: “…the Mormons and the US government.”Yell: “Number 19” Do: Run to the front of the room and write a number “7” on the white board. Draw a big circle around the number. Yell: “It took seven petitions to the U.S. Congress before Utah was admitted as the 45th state in 1896.” Clap your hands and yell “Everyone stand up and clap your hands! Keep clapping until someone tells you to sit down.”

20.Listen: When you hear everyone start clapping Yell: “Number 20” Do: Stand by the flagYell: “Everyone stop clapping and sit down in your chair”. Wait for all to sit down.Yell: “Some Utahns soon became famous in the country.” Sit down on your chair.
