“publishable,” and just truly try to play with the materials and ideas (and A LOT of

flowers and animals!).

Mixed-Media Assignment ________

Your assignment is to do 4-6 paintings illustrating “Blondine, Bonne-Biche, and Beau-

Minon” using watercolor, Yupo paper and pencil. No need to belabor these paintings;

just “play” with texture, line, composition, ideas. Experiment!

NOTE: Though you are welcome to add other media to your experiments, I recommend

limiting your supplies at least for the first few pieces, as we want to limit the variables/

choices so the IDEAS can take center stage.

SUPPLIES- 10-sheet pad of Yupo Paper, 9”x12” (If you were not able to get Yupo, see page 11-14 for tips.) - small watercolor set - assortment of brushes, medium grit sandpaper - pencil with eraser

Video Demo #1

“Ostrich” Techniques

1. Start by mixing up a color using at least two different colors of paint. Your paint should

be really wet.

2. Using a large brush, lay down the shape of your animal. Vary your pressure and move

your brush around (even turning your wrist) to get different textures. Let the Yupo

Paper do most of the work! Let dry completely.

3. Add pencil... lines, shading, etc. Don’t forget the eraser!

4. Try limiting your palette to just one or two different colors.

Tip: Cut out some of your sea flowers and play with adding them into your composition

using the transfer method shown in the video.

When painting, if you think of something to do, try it! This is the week to try things (and

don’t feel you need to show every single experiment if you don’t feel comfortable).

Video Demo #2

“Deer” Techniques

1. Mix up a darker color of paint, like dark brown or black. Paint in a loose shape of your

chosen animal. Let dry completely.

2. Use sandpaper to add fur texture, and/or a slightly damp rag to pull color off the paper

(such as spots).

3. Use a wet rag (not dripping, but wetter than before) and “carve” out your shape more

to your liking.

4. If you would like to pull back areas inside your animal, cut a stencil out of plain

paper, lay it atop your animal, and use your rag to lift off the pigment.

5. Add pencil details.

Video Demo #3

“Flower” Techniques

1. Mix up a very wet color of watercolor and lay down your shapes, either carefully (like

the circles) or more randomly/abstractly.

2. Mix up a second, heavier pigmented color and immediately add it to your first layer

(“wet on wet”). Work quickly, just dot the colors in.

3. “Draw out” some of your wet paint to make little petals and spikes using a sharp tool

such as a needle or even your mechanical pencil.

4. Let dry completely. Go back in with pencil shading and additions, if desired.

Tips for Watercoloring on Vellum Paper

Vellum is not the ideal paper for watercoloring. Vellum reacts very differently than the

Yupo, even though they look similar!

On vellum, when using very wet paint, the paper will “buckle.”

To minimize the buckling, use less water in your paint and try applying very thin strokes.

You can also use a slightly damp rag to soften your edges.

Watercolor Paper

If you only have watercolor paper this month, don’t worry! You can play with the paint

and pencil in the same ways demoed on the video using the Yupo Paper... except the

carving technique.

But here is a way to mimic the carving with white gesso instead of a white rag:

Step 1: Paint randomly on your watercolor paper, wet paint on wet. Remember just to

very quickly dot in those second colors and then leave it alone and let the watercolor

move around. Let dry.

Step 2: Paint on a thick layer of white gesso (or white acrylic paint), leaving some rough

flower shapes in watercolor. Let gesso dry completely.

Extra Credit

If you have extra time, consider one of these extra-credit assignments!

Extra Credit #1 After your first paintings using watercolor and pencil only, do more experiments, but this

time you can add other media such as PanPastels or colored pencils.

So that’s it. Paint and paint a lot. Try different things. Abandon experiments mid-way.
