A letter from the Pastor My dear People at Blessed Seelos Parish: Matthew 16:18 is best known as the passage that proclaims the primacy of Peter. Jesus tells Peter the Apostle who will he be for the Church. The papacy certainly has had some difficult times historically, but we must never lose sight of the great gift the papacy and the primacy of St. Peter are for the whole Church. Jesus never acted out of whim. Everything he did and said had a purpose and a reason in God’s plan. This means that the passage we proclaim today from the Gospel of Matthew is not simply a human preference for Peter on the part of Jesus, or a general statement about the faith required of every Christian. It is clear that it was a very intentional statement at a very crucial time and also a very direct, specific reference to the Prince of the Apostles as well. Jesus thinks about the future of the way he is presenting to his disciples and followers, and he is also aware that there needs to be a providential order that will help to keep the followers of this new way together. It is in the intersection of these two interests that we find the proclamation we hear today: “You are Peter, the Rock, and upon this rock I will found my Church.” Let us today thank the Lord for the providential gift of the papacy. Let us pray for the successor of St. Peter today, Pope Francis, and let us take time to reflect on why this is so important in the Church. Fr./P. José Ignacio
