Bio-Degradable Track Mat
Original Concept:
Is there a cheaper, easier, and environmentally sound method available to provide the same petroleum hydrocarbon protection as the standard track mat?

Bio-Degradable Track Mat
• Bio-Degradable Track Mat (BDTM)• Eliminates the need for railroad track workers to remove old mat,
dispose it, and nail down new mat• Minimizes track down-time• BDTM forms an effective “mat” of protection that replaces standard
track mat

What is BDTM?
• BDTM is a spinoff from a NASA-developed technology• BDTM consists of an engineered blend of waxes processed into
microparticles and mixed with other materials for easy handling• These particles absorb diesel fuel, oil, and grease, thus providing a “green”
barrier layer

What is BDTM?
• Petroleum penetrates the microparticles and the combination is a preferred source of nutrients for existing microbes
• BDTM is oleophilic (clings to petroleum) yet hydrophobic (repels water)• With the specific gravity of BDTM being greater than oil but less than
water, BDTM forms an effective barrier between the ballast and the impact of normal operations
