Spring DriveSpring shows what god can do with the drab and dirty world. ~ Victor Kraft

I am sure most of us would agree with what this philosopher said... spring certainly does give a new lease of life to this earth. It brings with it colour, freshness and innumerable goodies — from waking up to the tweeting of birds outside the window, to going on for long walks without a shiver, to smiling at the flowers abloom, to watching beautiful butterflies fluttering away happily, to the smell of freshly cut grass…

In India, this is also a season of festivities; the biggest being the festival of colours, Holi. Though we don’t really practice “spring cleaning” in its purest meaning, homes do get beautified during this period. So if you haven’t started adding bursts of bright hues, energetic patterns, and lively springtime motifs to your home to effortlessly transition it in keeping with the season, you better get started on it pronto.

As always, we have a string of articles to guide you on this mission. Get the vibe just right by choosing stylish products listed in our Bazaar section. These feature themes encapsulate every element of spring — winged beauties, textures, solid colours, floral and leaf motifs. What better time than spring to announce the Colour of the Year 2016, thought the biggies at Asian Paints and Kansai Nerolac. Get all the gyan about their colours of the year — Madder Red and Wild Berries — in our Colour & Style section. Don’t miss out the five fantastic barbeque options available in the country (in our High Five) which will not only make you a Masterchef but also add flair to your kitchens and outdoors during those spring parties. Also, check out the exhaustive feature on the latest news and products from the world of home automation and home security in In Focus. Here, we present the finest and most innovative brands in the market and get their top honchos to fill you in on all the dope on this fast growing segment.

So go on, open your curtains, let the sunshine in, dress the house in spring... and let the party begin.

Raw, rustic unpolished... I admit I am a lover of stark spaces too. Therefore, the Factory 2 non-woven wall covering from Marshalls Wallcoverings is definitely coming home soon.

Architect Hiren Patel’s design for a bungalow in Ahmedabad is tailor-made to perfection. This sprawling space is home to four generations of a family, and showcases the architect and his team’s immense attention to details and client needs.

Architects Harsh Chawla and Monica Chawla ensure that the young and urbane clientele easily identify with the designs they rendered for a luxurious show apartment in Wood View Residency, Gurgaon.

Black and colourful... the Sabatini upholstery collection from RR Decor is a steal.

Interior designer Ruchi Sabharwal draws inspiration from the cuts and shapes of a moissanite jewel to lend dynamism to the interiors of moissanite jewellery specialists Fiona Solitaires, in Navi Mumbai.

A result of a neighbourhood initiative, New York’s High Line park was designed keeping in mind the existing landscape and plants that grew across out-of-use elevated rail tracks. With a focus on native species, a combination of perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees were used for their hardiness, sustainability and aesthetic appeal.

Yoga Narashima Temple Hill, Melkote, Tamil Nadu, is a village dedicate to lord Vishnu. Located at the foot of the Yanaimalai Hills, the cave temple Yoga Narasimha Perumal Temple is one of the three shrines dedicated to the deity.

60 kms from Bangalore, the verdant Nandi hills have attracted many, from Indian royalty to members of the British Raj. Its climate has made it conducive to the growth of several species of plants, many rare as well as some endemic to the Western Ghats. The hills are also a haven for birders.

letter of the MonthThe Better Interiors outdoor special has come out at the perfect time. The weather in Bangalore is really lovely and there’s nothing like spending some time outside enjoying the cool breeze and the soft warmth of the sun. What has added to this is the informative and beautiful spread, encouraging people like me to do something wonderful in my terrace. So many amazing ideas, such a varied and exquisite collection of furniture and accessories featured in the Bazaar section. My heart is set on buying the Kobe twin swing chair from Abaca and the adorable bird cage by Wonderland. The article titled Landscapes of Engagement was very interesting and I was fascinated to read about the High Line Park project. I wish we could adopt such community work in India too. All in all, I loved every bit of the magazine. Great stuff!Preeti Leekha, BangaLore

so artyI’m always so impressed with the research your team puts in and finds such talent. An art-admirer, I always look forward to reading the Art Walk section in your magazine. However, I really feel you guys should expand the section or maybe even feature a project where a particular artist has used art in design.

three GeMsA regular reader of the magazine, especially the Habitat segment, I tremendously enjoyed reading

about three different projects from residential, restaurant and office categories. I think it has been really long since Better Interiors published such variety in one issue itself. Lovely spaces, lovely designs and really good write-ups. Please keep doing more of hotels, offices and recreation projects for design enthusiasts like me.gaurav kumar, new DeLhi

Cafe BarMore than anything else, the way the writer explains the design ethos and the thought behind the decor of the Free Flow – Traffic Bar (featured in Space & Spice) is fantastic. I usually end up flipping the pages of the magazine and adoring the pictures, but this write-up grabbed my interest and I read the entire piece. The amalgamation of a Hyderabad-style Irani Cafe and the zesty Bar has been carried out nicely by the Spacefiction Studio. The editorial team, the designers, the writers are all doing fabulous jobs.archit khanna, mumBai

ProduCts PleaseOver the last couple of years, I have read the magazine on a monthly basis and have purchased so many decor pieces and appliances announced in your Swish and Gallery pages. I always find the products to be new and refreshing, and a great value-addition to the whole issue. Small features like these are what home-makers like me are on the lookout for, to make our homes beautiful and functional. Keep up the good work.viDya sen, koLkata

tiMe outThank you so very much for the informative article Infocus on the outdoors. I am in the process of shifting to a new home, that has a small garden as well, and this article will help to a great extent in designing it. From flooring to garden accessories, the writer has explained in detail, the various materials and brands one can opt for. It was also interesting to read about so many different landscape projects by renowned architects and designers from across the globe in the Green Revolution feature. I had no idea that there would be so many little details to worry about while just designing a garden or a lawn.nikita srivastava, BhoPaL

Frida Kahlo’s Garden

ExpEriEncE thE intEnsE colours oF thE GardEns oF casa azul, thE homE oF mExico’s lEadinG artist Frida Kahlo.

ThIS ExuBERANT Book wAS published as a part of an exhibition — Frida Kahlo: art, Garden, life — at The new York Botanical Garden on the life, art and works of one of 20th century’s leading Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo. The book contains a series of articles edited by the guest curator and exhibition coordinators, apart from the marvellous artworks of Frida that were showcased at the exhibition. The gardens at Casa azul (or Blue

house) were a source of study and inspiration for Frida’s paintings. They were also often the subjects of her paintings. “Kahlo’s use of botanical imagery reflected the embrace of the archetypal Mexican indigenous and natural elements that defined post-revolutionary art. But her approach was hers alone. in her paintings, she imbued plant imagery with cultural, spiritual and personal meanings in unexpected ways,” mention

editors adriana Zavala, Mia d’avanza, and Joanna l Groarke in their introductory essay on Frida. a photographic essay by Joanna l Groarke that features photographs by several photojournalists is beautiful. The feature also contains captures by Frida’s father Guillermo Kahlo (whose own photo studio was a part of the house) which showcases the house and gardens in many moods and documents its transformation from the childhood home of Frida at Coyoacan from a functional garden to Casa azul the “living cabinet of curiosities” (filled with the collections of hispanic art, objects, plants and pet animals); a creative refuge for the artist and her husband diego Rivera. adriana Zavala’s wonderful essay provides a background to the book and a lens to view the

garden as a setting for Frida’s art and life. The delight that Frida took in her house observed through a plan sketch is the bonus feature of this essay. The plan vividly captures her delight and joy in her home and garden, and its diverse inhabitants (monkeys and giraffes, amongst other species). The garden reflected the personalities of the artist, a blend of the modern, cosmopolitan approach and a deep love and understanding of the vernacular cultures of Mexico. Changes and upheavals in her life were reflected in the transformation of the house and gardens as well. The plant palette which was largely european, gradually metamorphosing into a native and adapted palette of Mexican nature, towards the end, became a garden comprised of Cactii’s and succulents. Frida’s paintings are known for lush natural imagery, fruits foliage and rich use of colours. The book highlights that the garden was an important part of Frida’s experiments with colour and form; and the natural landscape, found their way into her paintings. The diversity of plants that formed a part of the garden and thereby used in her rich paintings are listed at the end of the book. The exhibition held last year on Frida at the new York Botanical Gardens, was amongst the most well attended shows in the history of the gardens. The sketch observations of Frida’s gardens by award-winning set designer scott Pask whilst recreating her beautiful wonderland (as a part of the exhibition), is also a bonus feature in the book.

BoRN IN EAST AfRIcA, educated in UK, and based in south east asia for the last twenty years, artist Ketna Patel is a product of the indian diaspora. her state of not-belonging and constant travelling has resulted in her having innumerable insights into radically different cultures. she feels that the day-to-day life is taken for granted, and that there is not enough of a formal documentation of a sub-culture, which is fast being replaced by shopping malls and homogenous urbanization. she uses street and pop culture to narrate stories and her work is a collage of underlying themes such as alienation, division and politics imbued with satire and irony. despite living in london and singapore, she has nevertheless remained true to her indian identity, most noticeable in her use of colour and themes. Ketna’s work has been exhibited at museums, galleries and art fairs across the globe. These include a south east asian Festival in london (november 2015), art tour in dubrovnik, Croatia (october 2015); a solo exhibition secretland in singapore (March 2015).

wITh dIgITAlIzATIoN taking place in every sphere of life, physical money as we know it may soon become obsolete. in reality then, bank notes will remain nothing more than a fancy blend of cotton and linen. Commentating on the transitory role of money and the changing state and function of the world economies, london-based product designer angela Mathis decided to deconstruct currency from around the world and turn it into a textile. Commissioned by the national Bank, angela’s project named Value took a variety of international bank notes such as the green american dollar, red Chinese Yuan, purple British pound, and brown indonesian rupee and blended them in different quantities to create different effects, textures and hues. The resulting recycled material was then used to upholster four custom-designed stools. But before one would raise objection over this seemingly reckless waste of money, it is imperative to point out that the textile was made from decommissioned, pre-shredded bank notes that had outlived their usually 18-month-long lifetimes.

on A lighter note...

how do you unwind after a busy, long day? My day is pretty much seamless because i don’t consider work and otherwise. For me, playing the multiple roles i have to play throughout the day keep me busy and after i am done playing those roles, spending some time in solitude helps me anchor myself and relax.

one book you keep going back to?the intelligent investor by Benjamin graham.

if you would be any character in fiction, who would you be, and why?Dogmatix... because i love to be pampered.

given a choice, which country you would shift base to? Why?i would like to shift to the United states of america because it remains the land of opportunity.

if someone were to write your biography, what would the title be?the luckiest Man there ever lived.

When did this passion for architecture engulf you?it was pretty early in my life, thanks to my father, jayant tipnis, who is also an architect.

tell us about the team at JtcPl designs. What is the firm’s design philosophy? do you feel that it has been determined by your collaborative energies?i am extremely grateful to and proud of my team at jtcpl Designs. i believe that they are the cornerstone of all the success we achieve. Before we get to the design philosophy, it is very important to know that our culture flows through the entire team. this allows us to easily implement our ethos, which is defined by these six concepts: partnership, responsiveness, on time, on budget, discipline and teamwork.

Which is that one essential element found across your work?More than a design element, it is worshiping the client’s aspirations all through the journey. What kind of design know-how are clients bringing to the table these days? And how does that impact your work process?since we work with clients who have technical teams running the project, we learn tremendously from them, and we also believe that they enhance our intellectual

growth. Our work process thus undergoes constant revisions, thanks to the technical expertise of our clients.

the big projects keeping you busy these days?Quite a few of them — Deutsche Bank and iDFc Bank, for starters. another project, which is very different from what we do usually, is one for a diamond export house called KBs creations. We are designing their corporate house.

Manufactured by Kent Ro systems ltd, the water purifier has been designed and developed in house; and sees the coming together of digital technology and Kent’s patented mineral Reverse osmosis (Ro) technology. The heart of this appliance is a Ro membrane having capillaries as small as 0.0001 microns, which reduces dissolved impurities (salts and heavy metals) and converts hard water to sweet and pure drinking water. with patented mineral retention system, the device allows a user to control the Total dissolved solids (Tds) level as well. The touch screen of the device is easy to operate with simple navigation tabs (status, service and help tabs) and a smart

microprocessor that has some unique functions. The UV stabilization delay ensures that the UV lamp is pre-heated and is working at its optimum level before it starts disinfecting water. The Purification delay makes sure that the idle water lying in the internal pipes and in the UV chamber is disinfected before being passed into the storage tank; and an alarm to ensure delivery of purer water. The purifier would also inform you when the filter needs replacement; warns you about the Tds in purified water; would announce if there is no water input and would also show you the Ro pump status and Ro flow rates. When two major paint companies in India announce their Colour of the Year 2016 we have to give you a low down on the hues, and their impact on the spaces you decide to introduce them in. Presenting the intense and individualistic Madder Red from Asian

Paints, and the sophisticated and earthy Wild Berries from Kansai Nerolac.

MAdder redFor over a decade, Asian Paints’ esteemed annual colour trends forecast, ColourNext has been supporting creativity in the design industry giving ideas and direction to which colours will be fashionable, favoured and just plain wow in the given year. Now in its 13th edition, Asian Paints’ ColourNext 2016 once again presented an expertly curated colour vocabulary. It unveiled four new colour trends for the year along with a brand new shade, Madder Red as Colour of the Year.

ColourNext is the foremost colour forecast reference tool for Indian interiors designers, architects and other professionals working with colour. “The Colour of the Year and the ColourNext trends are an output of a six-month-long, intense research during which we analyzed and tracked movements from multiple fields — economics, lifestyle, politics, architecture, interior design, communication, multimedia, anthropology and so on. We trace the subtle triggers that sway people, map the possible influences and key in the most impactful trends and their expressions. Madder Red, the Colour of the Year, is the result of this exercise, where, multiple industry experts, along with our in-house experts, participated in the research,” informs Amit Syngle, President-

Sales, Marketing and Technology, Asian Paints Limited. Some of the people who contributed to the research at different points are product designers Karthik Vaidyanathan, Sahil Bagga, Sarthak Sengupta, Gunjan Arora, Chadrashekhar Bheda amongst others.

With a range of possible connotations, from the sacred to the sensual, Madder Red, is intense and individualistic. The very apt name has been derived from the madder plant from which the pigment is distilled. It remains an expression of the indomitable spirit of the individual that unites the varied currents we see in society today. It comes from an intensity of passion and the power of conviction, making it the perfect colour for today’s times.

The trends in ColourNext 2016 trace the emergence of the driven individual. Rekindle is a trend drawn from the living world around us. The lead palette of Madder Red, Grand Grape, Grains of Sand and Green Lawns captures the unwavering trend for the classic where objects, experiences and spaces awaken a deeper emotion. Flock is like a series of open portals that one passes through, weaving a layered tapestry of understanding and experience. Almost white with a hint of purple or a drop of red, mild colours meet dreamy surfaces like marble and iridescent glass — a true exploration of coming together.

Offbeat is the new normal. ColourNext 2016’s third trend, Age of Creators, represents an unbridled freedom of expression and that which is edgy and fresh. Head-turning redefinitions of blue, pink, black and green reflect the polish of Corian and anodized metal, offset by suede and concrete finishes. The fourth trend, The Explorer, sees the beauty of impermanence. It is about seeing the world through a kaleidoscope of experiences, each one intensely lived and deeply observed. The palette is neutral with browns and greys, the perfect background to the theatre of life that unfolds. Joyfully unattached, The Explorer chooses birch over teak, aluminium over iron and wallpapers that feed a whimsical need to move on.

Wild berries In our fast paced lives, we often tend to look for ways to connect with nature. Not only does it help break the monotony of life, it also gives the much needed time and context to connect with ourselves. Even as we keep in sync with the changing times, imbibe the diversity around us and open ourselves to change, there remains an urge to be rooted to our unique identities. And therefore, Kansai Nerolac Paints Limited (KNPL) decided on the one colour which encapsulates these thoughts beautifully — Wild Berries — and crowned it as their Colour of the Year 2016. Wild Berries as a shade lends a distinctive, yet natural element to almost any setting.

Wild Berries, which takes inspiration from the wild fruit Bor, is a variant of the Burnt Brick shade available with KNPL. This hue complements Indian designs and enhances their appeal. Moreover, Wild Berries is grounded in our culture and crafts — from the red soil of the Western Ghats, to traditional Indian pottery and the sloping roofs of South India. The beauty of this shade is its versatility — it works equally well for both interiors and exteriors.

KNPL suggests a few ways you can use Wild Berries to beautify your spaces:

l Paint a wall with the colour and offset it with brightly patterned fabric and neutral flooring. Use it as an accent against lush backgrounds to perk up the space for a nature lover, or as a subtle contrast against old wood, aged metal and pale grey walls in for a luxurious and classic feel.

l Use Wild Berries for furnishings and accessories to give a pop of colour to an otherwise muted interior. Being a warm but robust colour, Wild Berries, when used as a backdrop, can harmonise objects, accessories and furnishings.

l Painting doors in the warm, welcoming colour will uplift the vibe of the entire house. The sophisticated and natural earthiness that this colour exudes makes it a preferred choice for home exteriors, both standalone houses and buildings.

In Focus

We live in a time unlike any other. With so many technological advancements rapidly taking place, our lives are made easier each

day. In recent years, great steps have been taken to make homes a bit more tech savvy as well. Known as home automation, this technology, in short, allows a homeowner to run his home via a remote control, often a smartphone or tablet. The term may be used for isolated programmable devices, like sprinkler systems and thermostats, but it more accurately describes homes in which nearly everything — lights, appliances, electrical outlets, heating and cooling systems — are connected to a remotely controllable network. From a home security perspective, this also includes your alarm system and all of the doors, windows, locks, smoke detectors, surveillance cameras and any other sensors that are linked to it.

Until fairly recently, automated central control of building-wide systems was found only in larger commercial buildings and expensive homes. However, “demand is on a rise due to the increased aspirations of the end-users, increased power to purchase and evolving definitions of comfort and luxury,” says Ashok

Page 51: Better Interiors - March 2016 - اکلیپتیکecliptic.ir/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Better-Interiors-March-2016.pdf · 20 BETTER INTERIORS March 2016 ... and Kansai Nerolac, have

Gangar, Director Sales & Marketing, Anchor, and this has led to the growth in the market and of systems being more affordable. Almost everyone today owns a smart device. In such a scenario, Avinash Gautam, CEO, Silvan Labs, feels that, “the world over, including India, people are asking the next logical question: What else can I do with this device? Can I monitor or control my home with it? That, in essence, sums up the new age — one which is smartphone-centric — and home automation, with systems which companies like ours provide, is a natural progression.”

Despite the segment showing signs of growth, Mehernosh Pithawala, Head-Marketing, Godrej Security Solutions, feels that “there is a fair amount of dissonance in the experience that homeowners are getting because it’s not holistic in nature. When it comes to usage and repeat conscience, it is very low. There is a lot of scope for improvement.” In this respect, Godrej Security Solutions tries to make home automation and security solutions relevant to the modern user and integrated with the Indian ecosystem.

In Focuscomponents. The first, automation, refers to the ability to program and schedule events for the devices on the network. The programming may include time-related commands, such as having your lights turn on or off at specific times each day or non-scheduled events, such as turning on all the lights when your security system alarm is triggered. From programming motorized blinds to close in the afternoon to getting your front door to open and close when the children leave for school, the possibilities are endless. The other main element is remote monitoring and access. With the right home automation system, you can use any internet-connected device to view and control the system as well as any attached devices. For example, you can check whether the lights are on, whether the doors are locked, what the current temperature of your home is and look at real-time video feeds of your home.

is The invesTmenT worTh iT?Apart from the obvious advantage of added convenience, home automation has several benefits. The presence of security cameras, for instance, is likely to deter unwelcome guests from lurking near your house. Security cameras provide safety by monitoring the premises and recording clips when detecting movement or at specific times of the day or night. Parents can ensure their children make it safely into the house each night — they can track their comings and goings and even program foyer lights to switch on when required.

Believe it or not, a home automation system can save you money too. No longer will you be spending money on electricity used by household appliances left on in your family’s absence. You will also save on fuel costs, as you will never need to stop by the house in order to turn something off or on, directly decreasing your utility bills.

Perhaps this benefit will not apply to everyone, but for those who habitually worry about whether or not they have taken care of everything at home before leaving for the day, a home automation system is a perfect investment. The other crucial factor is deciding upon the application points or controls. “In order to offer optimum controls, a greater integration of the system is required. For example, a gas detector or a smoke sensor may be required in the kitchen, while a Passive Infrared-based system may be required in the living room" Ashok points out. Other aspects to be considered include ease of usage, seamless blending into the home interiors and the complexity of the installation process. When it comes to home automation, there are a few steps that must be followed in order to implement the technology effectively. First, you need to plan your automation needs. For example, if you want to improve your security system, then you need to checklist all its requirements and initiate an automation process accordingly. Once you know what your requirements are, decide upon a budget. While complete home automation and integration can be expensive, the market today offers a spectrum of products in various price ranges. If you want to just target a specific space at

(including furniture, lighting, art and accessories) in the flat in question has been designed, manufactured and executed by Essentia Environments.

The duplex apartment, covering an area of 3,400 sq ft, is spread across two levels: the basement and the ground floor, including stilt. The idea was to enhance the existing structure of the house with their design know-how and elevate the look of the space. Numerous meetings were conducted with the client to understand his requirement and the needs of the end-user. This included decorating the space with a modern and youthful vibe without over-spending. “Once we had a fix on that, we consciously tried to resist giving our imagination a free run and tried to amalgamate the client’s wants with our design sensibilities, to make the space alive, original and very importantly, practical,” explains Monica.

After going through the entire built space, Monica and her team decided to make only a few structural changes to the layout since the duplex was newly constructed. An artificial courtyard was created in the basement; the passage leading to the bedrooms on the upper ground floor was made wider, while a few walls were punctuated to create one cohesive, expansive and luxurious space.

A false courtyard has been created in the basement. This space is surrounded by mirrors on all sides with artificial plants to simulate an element of nature. The living area appears larger with the beige Chesterfield sofas kept on the other side of the mirrored walls.

Luxury, elegance and perfection are evident in every home built by the celebrated Ahmedabad-based architectural and interior design firm Hiren Patel Architects. Spearheaded by

architect Hiren Patel, the dedicated design team takes immense pride in creating and developing designs that will become not only homes, but masterpieces. Of course, they have high expectations to match in every single project as their reputation is built on the foundation of quality and service, where the client is the priority. Therefore, be it remodelling an existing home or constructing a new one, the firm ensures that the client is a significant part of the process. It would be right to say here that the clients’ expectations are not only met, but surpassed.

Project Kaanhaa landed on architect Hiren Patel’s table with a similar request — to create something spectacular and unique, but with a competitive budget to meet. “The client wanted us to conceive the interior design of an 8,408 square foot bungalow which was part of a community-kind of living arrangement in a fast developing area in Ahmedabad. This house was part of a complex that had a central courtyard surrounded by built structures,” informs Hiren. “Four generations of a family would be

staying together — the client and his three children, his parents and grandparents. Other than a tight budget and the requirement to place their youngest child’s room next to the master suite, nothing else was dictated to us. Even in terms of design, they gave us a free reign.” Though there were no major structural changes carried out in the building, the basic flow of the spaces, the allocation of the various services and the public and private zones called for detailed attention.

“The building is a ground plus two floors and terrace construction. So, it was practical to keep the public areas of the house on the ground level. Our primary challenge was to allocate and design the private zones in such a way that the connection and interactivity between them was not lost,” says Hiren. Hence, the ground level of the house has the living, dining, kitchen, pooja, and

grandparents’ rooms. The two daughters and the client’s parents occupy the first level, while the master suite and the son’s bedroom is placed close to each other on the second level. The third level has a lavish entertainment room and a terrace space. “In the course of our initial interactions, we realized that the family loves watching television together, hence, the entertainment room is one space they all convene at on a daily basis. It becomes a meeting point and hang-out zone for them and hence, it has been given a prime spot in the entire design,” says the architect.

The next important job in hand was to make this space unique... and therefore, creating bespoke furniture, accessories and artwork was decided on. Interestingly, most of the furniture, some furnishings and artwork were developed in-house by the architect. Hiren tells me the story of how his daughter Anushree Patel always wanted to build a product design line. She gave wings to this dream by creating a few furniture pieces and decided to brand them Waylin. “We received good response from our clients when we showed them some of her designs. That’s when we decided to develop more furniture and accessories under this brand. Some of the important pieces of furniture at Kaanhaa

are Waylin creations,” says the proud father. However, others — like the sofas, some consoles, the mirror frames, lamps, wall pieces and chairs — have been sourced from foreign brands such as Natuzzi and Pottery Barn and homegrown labels like Good Earth.

Another crucial aspect, and definitely a talking point of the house are the innumerable artworks splashed around in all important areas of the house. “Not many people are drawn to art and convincing a client to buy art and educating them on how to choose the right pieces for their spaces are important tasks most architects are carrying out today,” says Hiren. In this project too, the architects went through a similar process, albeit in a long-winded way — from introducing artworks, to understanding the design aesthetics of the client, to suggesting certain pieces, to refining their taste in art. Though Hiren had to start from scratch, the

result of the exercise is evident in the house — there are paintings from artists Apurva Desai, Kailash Desai, Vinod Shah and Bansi, all strategically placed. Amidst this esteemed line-up, water colours from Hiren also find a place of pride in this house. Quiz the architect on his tryst with art and the answer is overwhelming: Hiren loves sketching and watercolours, and has had more than 100 sketch books with him. A curator visited his office sometime ago and was impressed by most of his artworks and expressed his desire to exhibit the same to the public at large. Though it came as a surprise to the architect, he agreed. “I wanted to donate the money from the exhibition to the library of a fine arts college in Ahmedabad. Fortunately, the exhibition was well-received; it was also priced economically, contrary to most artworks,” explains Hiren. “The client also

Though the Kaanhaa project looks simple at first glance, the mystery unfolds layer-by-layer as one discovers the subtle nuances of each and every product, artwork and design element created by the architect. there are enough studies done on the relationship between pleasant store environments and enhanced customer value. And changing brand perception through an altered

retail experience is exactly what Fiona Solitaires sought when they were contemplating opening the 11th store of their moissanite jewellery chain in Navi Mumbai. To a more pragmatic mind, their choice of designer would seem more like a gamble: interior designer Ruchi Sabharwal had no previous experience in retail design, and the promoters had burnt their hands even when they’d roped in more seasoned names. But Ruchi’s passion for work and preoccupation with design excellence — qualities she’d imbibed from ace designer Rajiv Saini under whom she worked for six years — resonated their ambitious plans for the brand. This exacting attitude seems to have done Ruchi a world of good; in the three years that she’s flown solo (Ruchi S Designs set up shop in 2013), the young designer has bagged several high-end apartments and a couple of offices.

The store itself wasn’t very large, and had a typical commercial aura of a small retail establishment nestling cheek by jowl with others, with frontage and no windows. The only solace was its relatively decent height of 12 ft. Ruchi’s immediate — and very natural — response was to turn to the ‘product’ for inspiration. There was no dearth of qualifiers: exclusive, feminine, elegant, faceted… The strategy adopted was to create an air of shuttered sophistication, a ‘by appointment only’ mystique. Therefore, the opaque front elevation was treated to a triangular print rendered on bronzed mirror that was further subjected to three treatments: acid-wash, non-reflective and gloss. Within this plane, insets of clear glass, fitted so precisely and smoothly as to create a feeling of seamlessness, allow passers-by to sample the fire, brilliance and lustre of the rare mineral. The portal itself is bordered by lacquer-coated rose gold finish. If the facade has warm overtones, the interiors are sleek, chic and white — the last a requisite for viewing the gemstone, quite literally, in the right light. Though the internal

configuration needed to toe the line of vastu, Ruchi says it didn’t get too much in the way of pure space-planning. “We needed to be careful about the reflectivity of finishes, and the levels of certain rooms. The powder room and the strong room were raised by six inches, for instance.” Cuts and shapes of a moissanite jewel continue to lend dynamism to the interiors as well. One wall is covered in three-dimensional tessellation rendered in plywood, MDF and white veneer. Small irregular polygonal glass-fronted display niches complete with sliding trays prevent this faceted wall from being a mere decorative element. “This, and the facade, were the most challenging aspects of the project,” reveals the designer. Opposite this wall, is a backlit swathe of stretched Barisol depicting a graphical journey of a moissanite jewel and history of the company. The sales counter sits along the long axis, somewhat in the centre, under the stunning Agnis Light by Roll & Hill. The partition at the far end conceals the back office: the MD’s cabin, pantry, store room and powder room. This plane, too, bears graphical facets, this time realized as wood inlay in veneer and insets of smoky glass that alleviate the starkness of the white engineered wood floor. Ruchi has been entrusted with the task of overhauling all the showrooms of the company, some in locations more prime than this one. The design strategy, she admits, may not be an exact replica of this one. But the one thing that will remain constant is that each retail point will demand its fair share of attention — like the one that started it all.

{Final Take} Pick Apart

Everyone has their favourites and the Better Interiors team is no exception. Sure, we are a bunch of committed ‘unbiased’ folk who report on design trends faithfully... but we also drool and how!

Pg 102 Just about everyone has a dream home tucked away in some happy corner of the mind and and the luxurious house created by Hiren Patel Architects in Ahmedabad (featured in the Habitat section) looks straight out of my dream! If I would have the luxury of living in such a huge house I would look up to these subtle nuances of customizing each and every corner like in the case of this spacious adobe. Even the subtle colour palette on the walls stands out with the rightly placed accessories. The contemporary wall art and wall coverings, playful lighting accessories and chic furniture setting leave an impression of exclusivity and class. According to me, this is what makes for a sophisticated and simple living. Rashmi Karanjekar

Pg 114 I certainly cannot afford jewellery available at Fiona Solitaires’ Navi Mumbai showroom (featured in Off the Shelf segment), but wouldn’t mind entering the store to just gaze at the jewels as well as the store. I’ve never seen such an attractive and inspiring store facade. The triangular prints in shades of shiny grey looks splendid and I cannot imagine how interior designer Ruchi Sabharwal thought of implementing such a complex design and treatment on the wall. The clear glass insets displaying the gorgeous jewelery along with huge moissanite stones make me feel as if I’m looking at the Kohinoor in a museum. Brilliant, glittering and priceless... and definitely unattainable!Alifiya Mehamdabadwala

Pg 63 I always get fascinated with wildlife and its beauty and this metallic Python console (featured in the Bazaar segment) is what captivated my attention. I just can’t take my eyes off it. Apart from its textured look, which exactly resembles the skin of the python, even the finishing done is amazing. Next time I renovate my house, this console would be on top of my must-buy list!
