The flooding that hit the north of Englandlast month (with risks of more from StormFrank as I write this) will emphasise toretailers the importance of being covered forall eventualities.

The experience of fabric group WalkerGreenbank (see p10) shows how importantinsurance is. It expects the Storm Desmonddamage to its Standfast & Barracks premisesin Lancaster to wipe out 15% of annualprofits in the period of about six weeks forthis year and also affect 2016/2017 figures.Thankfully its flooding and businessinterruption insurance policies should fullycover these costs.

Several years ago I remember a retailerwho’s store had burned down telling me thatto save money he had not renewed his

insurance policy, which of course proved tobe a very expensive mistake.

What would happen if your premisesflooded? Would you be able to carry on while the damage was repaired and stockreplaced?

The damage caused to homes will ofcourse provide a silver lining for retailers asconsumers replace their ruined furniture, flooring and furnishings, once their insurancecompany pays out.

But to look forward January is, as ever, packed with exhibitions and judging frommy inbox Frankfurt, Hannover, Cologne,London, Birmingham (with its new JanuaryFlooring Showcase) and Paris will be awashwith new products to entice consumers laterin the year.

Also shaping up to be a success is the newWool Floor Show London, which has sold out in less time than Jose Mourinho’s finalseason at Stamford Bridge (see p10). TheCampaign for Wool/British Wool event inMarch has attracted a Who’s Who of thecountry’s wool carpet companies and looks set to give retailers a fresh way oflooking at carpet, rather than focusing onprice alone.

Last month’s flooding inthe north of Englandserves as a reminder toensure businesses areequipped for all events

Carpetright ‘on track’while Topps sees growthWilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive, says his plan totransform the company is ‘on track’ after like for like salesincreased again.

UK sales were up by 2.6% to £199.2m in the six months to31 October, with like for like sales 3.7% higher. The like forlike rise compares with a 6.5% increase for the same perioda year ago and a 4% rise in the 25 weeks to 24 October.

UK gross margin dropped by 70 basis points to 61% butunderlying profits rose by 28.8% to £9.4m. Like for likeEuropean sales, including the Republic of Ireland, increasedby 3.7% in euro terms, with underlying profits climbingfrom £100,000 to £500,000.

Walsh says it enjoyed strong growth on smooth flooringin the period and plans to update its IFC offer.

‘The group continued its positive like for like salesperformance and grew profits significantly during the firsthalf. In parallel, we made good further progress with a wide-ranging programme of initiatives to extend the appeal ofthe Carpetright brand and address significant legacyproperty issues. The trial of a new retail concept and brandidentity is, as expected, producing much valuable customerinsight. A comprehensive customer research study will becompleted by the end of January 2016, giving us a moredetailed picture, which will inform our decisions on whichelements we will roll out across the existing estate,’ he says.

‘In a retail market which remains very competitive, we are

confident that our plan to build on Carpetright’s strongfoundations, modernise the business, and ensure wecapitalise on our advantages as market leader to the full, ison track. Our full year profit expectations remainunchanged [between £17m-£18m].’

Meanwhile, flooring and tiles chain Topps Tiles has seensales growth continue after achieving record sales in theyear to 3 October. Turnover at the 346-store chain was up8.7% to £212.2m in the year to 3 October. Like for likegrowth was 5.4%. Since then like for like sales haveincreased by 3.3% in the eight week period. Gross marginlifted from 60.9% to 61.2% and pre-tax profits were up19.3% to £20.4m.

The chain says it has achieved its target of having a thirdof the UK tile market a year ahead of target while trade salesrose from 46% to 50% as more consumers turned to usingfitters. There was success with new ranges, with productsintroduced in the past year accounting for 9.3% of sales.

‘Our strategy of “out-specialising the specialists” continuesto be very effective and will remain at the heart of what wedo as we seek to build on these foundations and targetfurther profitable sales growth,’ says Matthew Williams,Topps Tiles ceo.

The chain is to abandon its clearance format stores, withfour being converted to the core Topps format and sevenclosed.

Pre-tax profits have more than doubledfor Sterling Furniture as sales climbedabove £50m. Pre-tax profits increasedfrom £800,000 to £2m in the year to 28February. Sales rose 12% to £50.1m.

Gordon Mearns, Sterling Furniture md,said the company had produced a goodresult in a difficult market, and hadbenefitted from its long-runningmarketing strategy of providingeverything to furnish and finish a home.

‘A mixture of cautious consumersentiment and still relatively low levels ofhousing market activity have an impacton retail sales. Rather than simplysupplying pieces of furniture, the grouphelps customers coordinate a roomproviding both the inspiration and theoverall products and services to supportthe main furniture,’ he said in the nine-store group’s accounts.

Department store and leisure groupLeekes has seen profits leap. EBITDAprofitability rose by £1.6m to £3.8m inthe year to 31 March. Since thenperformance has continued to improve, with EBITDA profits of £4.5m for theeight months to 30 November, a 55%rise.

Its retail business capitalised onimproving consumer confidence andincreased activity in the housing marketto deliver a 6% like for like sales growthleading to ‘substantial improvements inprofits’. Particularly strong performanceswere seen in the larger investmentcategories such as furniture, furnishings, conservatories, windows, doors, kitchens, and bathrooms.

‘We have continued to make asignificant investment in our retailbusiness in recent years with the

opening of our new flagship store inCoventry in 2012, a £1m modernisationprogramme at our Cross Hands store aswell as the refurbishment of our kitchenand bathroom studios in all stores. Weare delighted to see that this continuinginvestment, coupled with the improvingeconomic conditions, is having asignificant effect on both our sales andprofitability,’ says Emma Leeke, LeekesRetail md.

‘Our strong sales performance hascontinued to build this financialyear…which means that we can lookforward to further improvements inprofitability over the remainder of ourfinancial year,’ she adds.

The group also reported record profitsfor its leisure division at The Vale Resort, which is generating its highest profitssince it opened in the 1990s.

End of an era asMacdonalds is setto close in YorkYork furniture retailer Macdonalds isto close in the New Year after ownerMartyn Macdonald accepted an offerfor the 104-year-old building.

‘I always intended to retire at 60,but I was made an offer for thebuilding and it seemed like the righttime to do it. My family and I havetaken this very difficult decision aftermuch thought,’ says Macdonald.

‘I will be very sad when the storecloses but I have to retire some timeand now seems ideal. After 40 years oflong hours and the stress of workingin retail, I am looking forward tospending my time pursuing my realpassion, which is sailing.’

A closing down sale began on 30December.

‘We would like to thank all ourcustomers, some of whom aregrandchildren of the people mygrandfather was serving all thoseyears ago. We hope they will continueto visit us between now and theclosing day. And of course I would liketo sincerely thank all our hardworking staff who have made this

store such a success, despite in recenttimes competition from out of townstores and Internet shopping. Specialthanks goes to my manager, AndyWhiting,’ says Macdonald.

The building has been acquired byFossgate Developments, which plansto refurbish the building and willshortly submit a planning application. In 1911 The Electric Theatre opened asYork’s first purpose-built cinema. When it closed in 1957 Macdonalds, which had opened next door a decadebefore, moved into the building.

London wool show sells outThe first Wool Floor Show London, aconcept from The Campaign for Wooland its major funder, The British WoolMarketing Board, has sold out.

From 23-24 March, the event will hostmore than 20 wool carpet manufacturersincluding Axminster, Brintons, Brockway,Bronte Carpets, Cavalier Carpets, Cormar,Crucial Trading, Jacaranda, Kingsmead,Manx Carpets, Mr Tomkinson, RogerOates, Ulster Carpets and Westex.

The show takes place in the Great Hallat Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium.

A key feature will be a series ofinspirational wool showcase installations, similar to that at The Flooring Show in

Harrogate where The Campaign for Woolhas hosted Wool Trends for the past twoyears.

‘It is the growing interest in the waythat this more stylish approach toflooring has appealed to retailers anddesigners that instigated this event. It isintended to create a really vibrant andstylish showcase that empowers thestory of wool for the floor,’ says BridgetteKelly, The Campaign for Wool consultant.

‘This is a true first for the wool carpetindustry as the visitor to this event willfind the very best offer of wool flooringavailable in one space: not just in the UKbut internationally.’

Flood damageUpholstery manufacturer ValeBridgecraft’s Mytholmroyd, WestYorkshire factory was flooded atChristmas, with water peaking at 7ft.

‘The dedication of the team, many ofwhich gave up their Christmas break tohelp clear up the mess, means we canrespond effectively to customer orders.Although conditions are difficult anddamage extensive, the quick action hasmeant that production will soon restart,’said Stuart Chadwick, Vale Bridgecraftmd, as Interiors Monthly went to press.

‘It would be great if our retailers couldsupport us by placing orders as normal, for fulfilment in around eight weeks.’

Meanwhile, Walker Greenbank faces atleast a four month wait before themajority of fabric printing capacity isback on stream at its Standfast &Barracks facility at the end of April.

The Lancaster facility sufferedsubstantial flooding as Storm Desmondhit the north west of England.

The group, which owns the Sanderson,Morris & Co, Harlequin, Zoffany, Scionand Anthology brands, says thedisruption will see pre-tax profits in theyear to 31 January be about 15% lowerthan current market expectations – itmade a pre-tax profit of £6.33m in2014/2015 – and trading in 2015/2016will be impacted until full capacity isrestored. However, it is covered byinsurance and expects to fully recoverthe shortfalls for both years. It plans tooutsource some fabric printing in theshort term.

Moving onThe Tri21project to get disabled peopleinto the furniture industry is to move toits second phase of developing trainingpackages. Last year the consortium ofassociations in the UK, Italy and Spain, including the BFM, identified the skills, abilities and knowledge for prospectivejob roles for the EU-funded scheme.

Once the training courses have beendeveloped they will be tested in Spainbefore being made available toemployers. There are more than50million people with a disability inEurope and the project has a primaryfocus on individuals with DownsSyndrome (Trisomy21).

Growth continues as Wildingreassures Victoria shareholders Geoff Wilding, Victoria Group executive chairman, has toldshareholders the company will carry on with its acquisitionpolicy and reassured them over its debt level.

Wilding made his comments as underlying pre-tax profitsrose from £2.57m to £5.89m in the 27 weeks to 3 October.Sales rose from £39.9m to £105.6m.

The results are not directly comparable with the sameperiod last year as they reflect the inaugural full first halfcontribution from both Abingdon Flooring and Whitestone, two months’ contribution from Quest Carpets, acquired on 7 August, and some three weeks of Interfloor, acquired on11 September.

‘Nevertheless operational synergies have been a primarydriver of the significantly enhanced performance of thebusinesses that have been part of Victoria since the start ofthe year. Of course, there is much more to achieve – theprocess is never ending – but the benefits of the company’sstrategy of achieving scale through acquisitions arebecoming clear,’ says Wilding.

‘We continue to identify and explore acquisitionopportunities. Our strong positive cashflow, together withsupportive bankers and shareholders, ensure furtheracquisition-based growth can be funded. By maintainingvery strict criteria and strong price discipline, I am confidentacquisitions will continue to be earnings enhancing and auseful tool to both strengthen the group and create wealthfor our shareholders.’

There are four major carpet markets in the world: NorthAmerica, Europe, Australasia, and the UK, and Wilding saysVictoria intends to be the number one or number twobusiness in each market in which it trades as the advantagesof scale – especially in terms of distribution and logistics –are significant. Victoria has had factories in Australia formore than 60 years and the purchase of Quest makes thegroup the number two flooring manufacturer in Australia –it says it is already the largest in the UK.

‘Quest is an outstanding business and I am pleased toreport that it has continued to go from strength to strengthsince acquisition,’ he says.

In mid-September Victoria made its largest acquisition todate, of underlay manufacturer Interfloor, funded by amixture of debt and equity. ‘Two of our senior operationalmanagers have joined the Interfloor board, bringing thebenefit of their entrepreneurial approach to the undoubtedexperience and skill of Interfloor’s management team. Someadjustments have already been made to the cost base ofInterfloor since completion and there are opportunities forconsiderably more,’ says Wilding.

‘It is important to understand that Victoria is a flooringbusiness, not just a carpet business. Whilst historicallyVictoria was a carpet manufacturer, the recent acquisitionsand product initiatives are leveraging our very strongdistribution channels and we now manufacture anddistribute other flooring products such as hard flooring(wood, tiles, LVT) and underlay. Underlay is sold alongsidenearly two-thirds of carpet sales in the UK and hence, withthe potential synergies in distribution, Interfloor was anideal acquisition for Victoria,’ he says.

Over the half year net debt increased from £36.28m to£81.11m, principally as a result of the acquisition of Questand Interfloor.

‘It is important shareholders appreciate that while netdebt has increased, so have the group’s earnings.Furthermore, since the half year, £8.46m was receivedfollowing shareholder approval of the second part of theequity fundraising undertaken at the time of the Interflooracquisition and these monies have been applied to reducedebt. Together with the strong cash generative nature of thegroup’s businesses, our debt to EBITDA ratio for bankcovenant purposes is now less than 2.25 (well within ouragreed bank covenants) and this is expected to continue tofall,’ Wilding adds.

Snoring and stealing the duvet are themost annoying aspects of sharing a bed, according to a survey of 2,000 people foretailer SleepyPeople.

Some 31% said snoring was the mostannoying; for 21% it was stealing theduvet; fidgeting 13%; cold feet 11%;flatulence 8%; talking too much 7%;cuddling 6% and other 3%.

Most of those who voted snoring asthe pet peeve were women aged 55plus.

When sleeping, the tongue relaxes and

can fall to the back of the throat. As thisspace is bigger for men, they are morelikely to snore.

For men, a woman’s inability to sharethe duvet comes top with women aged35plus the serial offenders. Those aged18-35 complained more about theirpartners fidgeting than the olderdemographic. This could be due to usingelectronic devices such as phones beforegoing to bed, which engages the brainwhen it should be shutting down.

SERVICE

24 Interiors Monthly January 2016

If you are easily offended, please don’tread on. I’m going to use the ‘C’ word.

I don’t mean ‘Christmas’, or itsaftermath when all those customers whohave changed their minds want to returnunwanted presents now that the party’sover.

I don’t even mean ‘complaints’. I wasonce asked to speak at a conference onthe subject ‘A complaint is a gift: there’s alot we can learn from the customers wedisappoint,’ so a complaint is not all bad.

But, brace yourself, that most offensiveword is… compensation. Most customersthese days seem to demand it evenwhen the most trivial things have gonewrong. So where do you stand?

If you’ve let a customer down bybreaching a contract and this has causedthe customer extra expense, such asrepainting a wall that got damaged by acareless delivery, the customer is entitledto claim this cost. It’s called damages.

You’ll probably know when you haveto pay damages because the customerwill be able to produce some kind ofquote or receipt to show what they’vehad to spend. It might be the cost ofrepairs, the cost of bringing the product

Mentioning the C word If things go wrong customers often want recompense

Consumers will often want compensation for faulty products and inconvenience

up to satisfactory quality, or otherfinancial outlays that directly resultedbecause you didn’t deliver the rightproduct in the right condition at theright time.

Many customers feel that in additionto these direct costs, they’re entitled tofurther money because of the hassle andinconvenience the problem has caused. They want compensation for this, eventhough they have not been made tospend any extra money.

In legal terms, compensation is usuallymoney paid to people who have beeninjured either in body or in reputation. It’s not possible to put a figure on thepain and suffering caused by a caraccident, nor the loss caused by libel ordefamation of character.

So compensation is paid – a sumdecided by a judge to compensate forthe injury even though it cannot bequantified in financial terms. Let’s behonest, everyone’s pain threshold isdifferent and a court can’t test a person’spain perception and adjust the award totake that into account.

When you sell to customers, damagesmay be payable if you breach the

Richard Renouf

contract of sale but compensation won’tbe. If a district judge were to look at acustomer’s claim they would make sureany direct losses were covered but wouldstop there. Any customer seekingpayments for anxiety, distress, inconvenience or other non-quantifiableissue would be unlikely to find sympathy.

In the real world, taking a hard linewhen you know you’ve caused thecustomer distress and inconvenience willleave the customer unhappy. As well asthe threat of negative online reviews andsocial media comments, there’s also thequestion of whether or not thatcustomer, and their family, friends, neighbours and all, will come back to dobusiness with you.

Perhaps you should think aboutinvestment rather than compensation. Ifwe can address the customer’sdissatisfaction in some way they’re morelikely to be back. And it may only need anice bouquet or a box of chocolates toshow your apology is genuine.Visit: www.richard-renouf.com

Deirdre Dyson’s collectionis named after her book

Using the same name for Deirdre Dyson’slatest collection as the title of her firstbook, Walking on Art: Explorations inCarpet Design, seems to be an obviouschoice.

She says the 2016 collection is anevolution of the 2015 collection Illusion.

‘There are nine designs, which featureblocks of colour grading and chunks ofsilk, integrated in a way that will play onlight. I have combined strong and subtletonal contrasts to create optical illusionsand added drama through splashes ofunexpected colour,’ says Dyson.

Blue is the colour of calmness and serenity and in manycultures blue brings peace and is believed to ward off badspirits. Blue can be strong and steadfast or light andfriendly. Deep blues signify importance and intelligence andcan be used around the home to create a sophisticated andelegant look. Paler shades of blue can be mixed with warmneutrals for a more classic look, perfect for bathrooms.

Yellow is the colour of hope and those who choose yelloware often inviting, warm and welcoming characters. Yellowcan work well on its own or is perfect for creating an invitingand welcoming entrance to a home. Bright yellows can alsobe paired with cool greys for an ultra modern look. Yellow isan appropriate colour for study as it has a stimulating effecton the mind.

Most cream shades have yellow undertones and can beused to expand space to make small rooms appear largerand brighter.

Purple is the colour of drama and luxury, inspiring creativityand imagination – a colour loved by creative minds. Thosewho plump for purple are often full of innovative ideas.Lighter shades of purple have a special, almost sacred placein nature: lavender, orchid, lilac and violet flowers are oftendelicate and considered precious. Paler shades have a softer, more feminine side and are perfect for creating romanticboudoirs.

Red is the colour of love and romance but also danger andanger, and can signify conflicting emotions. Often thosewho pick a red hue can be heated in their temperaments.Deep reds were first used by upper class Victorians to signifygrandeur and prosperity. Use red to create a focal point aswell as adding a touch of luxury to your living room. Redsare also perfect for the kitchen as the colour is said tostimulate the appetite and increase metabolism.

Green is the colourof nature, signifying growthand newbeginnings. It hasboth warming andcooling properties, meaning thosewho opt for thiscolour often have acalming and stableinfluence on thosearound them.Darker greenshades with oliveundertones bringthe outdoors inand produce anunderstated andserene look forliving rooms orbedrooms. Vibrantlime tones addenergy to a roomand bring amodern feel tokitchens andbathrooms.

Mood chartsWhat colours say about personalities

Consumers want to know the impact of colours, according toJohnstone’s Paint, which has a team of colour psychologists to analyse choices.

‘More people are looking to understand the meanings of the shades that they choose, to pick a decor that best reflectstheir personalities, or qualities that they’re looking to bringinto their life,’ says Timothy Hope, Johnstone’s Paint colourpsychologist. ‘While seasonal colour trends come and go, wehave seen our customers asking for specific informationaround what colours represent, to add a more personal touchto their home or garden. Of course, we also take other aspectsinto account when advising on colour, such as the housedimensions and furnishings.’Visit: www.johnstonespaint.com

Spring into shapesFibreline has expanded its cushion offer using springs

Fibreline has always been at the forefront ofcushion technology and its latestinnovation is no exception, according toRichard Prudhoe, Fibreline md.

‘Springcore is a wonderful newdevelopment. Small pocket springs areinserted into a shaped foam core. For thefirst time a spring foam cushion can now bemade in almost any shape or size andwithout the noise of springs movingagainst each other. This is a big advantageover conventional spring cushions and ithas a low, flat profile much requested forsome of today’s retro styles.

‘We developed Springcore as 100% foamseats soften in use by 20%-30%, whichoften results in customer complaints,’ hesays.

Prudhoe explains that traditional springcushions are made in two ways: springunits, where strips of pocket springs gluedtogether to produce a rectangular unit areput inside a foam ‘box’ made by gluing bitsof foam together, or strips of pocket springsare put inside a fabricated foam box.

Both methods have issues: the springscan move against each other which canoften be heard; the foam box containsvertical joins which are not desirable in aseat cushion; and the linear nature of thespring units limits the shape and size of thecushion they can be used in.

Prudhoe says Springcore has four uniqueelements: a solid foam core with no verticaljoins; individual pocket springs workingindependently; an ability to locate theholes/springs in any position within thefoam core; and they can accommodate anysize or shape of cushion.

As with Fibreline’s Encore Feather andFibre ranges, Spingcore has a four-yearguarantee against sagging.Visit: www.fibreline-ltd.co.uk

Opposites attractIndustrial and rustic offer contrasting styles

Who would havethought thatdilapidated factoriesand warehouseswould becomehighly covetedresidentialproperties? Thelarge-scalerelocation of ourmanufacturingindustry hasrendered an ever-increasing numberof industrialbuildings obsolete. These premises arebeing converted into living space, whileretaining their rough, unfinished edges.

Exposed concrete, visible pipes andducts and rough brick walls are put inthe spotlight instead of being covered.Robust, rough and authentic are thekeywords.

The industrial trend is closely linked tothe style that embraces imperfection: aninterior that is unpolished; a home thatexudes character and history. Industrialpremises are interesting because theyalso offer a solution for the housingshortage, particularly in big cities.

Additionally, these buildings arebecoming increasingly comfortable tolive in thanks to the many alternativeheating and insulation solutionsavailable. An industrial interior doesn’tnecessarily have to seem cold; with theright furnishings cosy homes can becreated in a former warehouse. An accentwall and some vintage or brightly

coloured pieces of furniture will warm upthe cool atmosphere.

A red brick wall is a bonus featureregularly encountered in industrialbuildings. Walls like these, with theirauthentic character, are enjoying a hugecomeback and exude a warmatmosphere. Neutral and natural shadeswork best in an industrial interior, while aneutral palette of colours complementsindustrial elements. Black and white aregood options, but softer grey is moretypical to this trend: it emphasises thesteel look of an industrial interior. Finishit with accessories such as copper lampsor a vintage railway station clock, or goall the way with a concrete lampshade orside table to create the atmosphere of aNew York loft.

Four into oneThe Harmony range combines four components to offer a variety of supportSlumberland’s Harmony collection hasfour elements that allow consumers toselect the type of support that suits thembest: Affinitex with Actipro; AffinityFoam; Affinity core pocket springs; andAffinity mini springs.

The Affinitex top layer’s material isbreathable and highly flexible underpressure. It can stretch up to 50% inevery direction and resumes its originalshape, even after constant use. Theinnovative Actipro componentneutralises bad bacteria and allergens forthe lifetime of the mattress.

Affinity foam is more breathable thanmemory foam because its constructionhas an open cell structure that allowsmore air to pass through it. Being porous, the foam allows air and moisture to passfrom the top of the mattress through to

The Harmony collection combinesfour components including pocketsprings (left) that deliverprogressive comfort and Affinityfoam with an open cell structure

the bottom. The end result is a mattressthat provides a healthy, clean and wellventilated sleep environment.

The more pressure put on the Affinitycore pocket springs, the stronger itbecomes as it delivers progressivecomfort. Individual Affinity pocketsprings respond to the sleeper’smovement and distribute weight evenly.Springs retain their individual comfort

and support and are never affected by apartner’s weight and movement.

Affinity mini-pocket springs offersupport to the natural arch of the lumbarregion. As the spring is under tensionwithin the pocket – always pushing backto its original position, it never losesheight or comfort throughout thelifetime of the mattress.Visit: www.slumberland.co.uk

More support packed inThe Supremacy collection boasts models with more than 30,000 springs

Somnus has developed luxury beds witha spring count of more than 30,000 aspart of its Supremacy collection.

The Supremacy range incorporatesSensa Intelligent pocket springs, whichgently respond to the sleeper’s body, dissipating weight and providing betterpostural support. The collection includes12 new models with spring countsranging from 4,550 to 34,500.

With the use of fine wire, drawn by itsin-house experts, each coil is 40% lighterthan the previous generation of Sensasprings, meaning more springs can beadded to the product without themattress becoming heavier. Each layerhas up to 4,000 springs, reducingpressure points and increasing comfort.

Using luxurious fillings throughout thecollection, including new additions treesilk-cotton and alpaca fleece, as well ashand-teased long stranded horsetail, silkand cashmere, the Supremacy collectionalso blends Egyptian cotton with home-grown eco wool for added breathability.

Many of the natural fillings, includingYorkshire Dales eco wool, flax and hemp, have been sourced from the company’sfarm in Yorkshire, and help maintaintemperature control and offer a healthysleeping environment.

The message is:

replace, think big, spend wellThe Sleep Council has helped cut thebed replacement cycle by almost halfand is celebrating its anniversary

In 1995 The Sleep Council launched with a simple mission: toreduce the replacement cycle of new beds. Set up by theNational Bed Federation, it was a consumer-facing organisationwith a healthy marketing budget and almost every bed retailerin the UK behind it as it set out to become the go to place forconsumers looking for everyday information about sleep andbeds.

It was the focus on sleep and the importance of a good bedto a good night’s sleep that really set the media chain inmotion. At last, there was an organisation providing meaningfuland relevant information about a subject in which everyone isinterested: sleep.

The ‘bed stuff’ was sneaked in on the back of wider sleepstories – but the critical thing was that for the first time, messages about the importance of a good bed weren’t beingcommunicated though a plethora of commercially brandedinfomercials. They were set in the context of sleep and the bed’simportance to that.

The Sleep Council has never strayed from this strategy, remaining fiercely independent and providing generic advice. What it has done is wrap up three core messages in storylines. For whatever the headline grabbing copy was, the sub-text hasremained the same: spend as much as you can on a bed; buy asbig a bed as you have space for, and replace your bed everyseven years.

Back in 1995, the replacement cycle was about 17 years. Thenpeople still clung on to the notion that furniture, furnishingsand beds should last a lifetime: most people felt a new bedpurchase wasn’t the most exciting way of spending their hardearned cash compared to other consumer purchases.

The fact that the replacement cycle is now nearer 10

years is testament to the dramatic shift in thinking that TheSleep Council, along with more active members of the industry, has encouraged through marketing campaigns.

More and more people now extol the virtues of their newbed. People have finally cottoned on to the fact that a reallygood comfortable bed can, quite literally, change their lives.

So how has the about turn come?As with anything that requires a shift in cultural mentality, it

has taken many years and scores of marketing campaigns tobring that change about. For sheer spectacle, the 2000 SleepingBeauty campaign takes some beating. It got National BedMonth that year off to a flying start.

Residents in Pillows Green Road, Staunton, Gloucestershirecouldn’t believe their eyes when they woke one March morningto see a woman asleep on a life-sized brass bed, suspended5,000ft high from a giant hot air balloon. The stunt was the firstof its kind in the country and a visual reminder of theimportance of beauty sleep. Of course, TV and newspapersembraced the spectacle and ensured that National Bed Month2000 got its share of media coverage.

As a rule, stunts can be a risky business which is why TheSleep Council has more often opted for PR friendly research –something the media loves, particularly where it generates ahost of juicy stories. These are just some of them:2001: The age of your bed could be a deciding factor indetermining the health of your relationship. The study for NBM2001 found that couples with beds less than two years old werefar more likely to share intimate secrets across the pillows and

to feel more relaxed and secure than couples whose bed waseight or more years old. 2003: Worries about possible war with Iraq kept nearly one infive of us awake at night with almost twice as many women asmen concerned about the situation. The survey behind thisstory for the NBM 2003 was conducted in collaboration withNytol to discover what was keeping people awake at night.2005: Britain’s MPs are burning the candle at both ends – tosuch an extent it could affect their ability to make rationaldecisions. This study – which compared the sleeping patterns ofeight groups of workers – found only on-call hospital doctorsslept less than the nation’s politicians. NBM 2005 revealed thatsome MPs were having as little as five hours sleep per night.2008: Sex drives are being swapped for hard drives as a quarterof British couples admit to regularly sleeping separately.According to the results of the survey for NBM 2008, the Britishbed was in danger of becoming more of a communications hubthan a place for sleep, as eight out of 10 people booted up avariety of high technology gadgets before bedtime.2003: Research for Sleep In day 2003 found that days off in bedcost Britain at least £800m in lost time off work and probablywell over £1bn, according to a top British sleep expert.2012: Lack of sleep among primary school children has adevastating effect in schools with nine out of 10 teachers (92%)complaining that pupils are so tired they are unable to payattention in class. More than a third (38%) said lack of sleepamong youngsters is a daily problem for them, according toNBM 2012.

Research has been carried out with others, including Radox Sharron Davies promoted a bed exercise routine

Page 61: Interiors Monthly January 2016

BEDS AND BEDROOM

www.interiorsmonthly.co.uk 61

2006: Research for Sleep In Day 2006 found that women aregrumpier than men in the morning, and not only are theygrumpier more often than men but they are grumpier forlonger. Some 24% of men say they never wake up in a badmood as opposed to only 14% of women. 2007: The following year sleep problems really made the newswith the Junk Sleep campaign which found that poor or ‘junk’sleep could soon rival junk food as a major lifestyle worryamong parents of teenage children. A survey of 12 to 16 year-olds found the unprecedented boom in teenage-ownedentertainment gadgetry was having a detrimental effect on thelength and quality of their sleep.

The campaign generated major media coverage – ontelevision, radio, national newspapers, regional titles andthrough an online campaign directed at teenagers. In all itachieved more than £500,000 worth of coverage for a budget ofabout £15,000.

Other campaigns have seen The Sleep Council petitionParliament to move sleep up the education agenda; pressurebuilders to build homes with bedrooms big enough to take aking-sized bed; and even harness the public’s obsession withcelebrities. Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies produceda ‘Wind Down and Wake Up’ exercise routine that could be donein bed; and the organisation named and shamed celebritieswho looked well slept – and those who didn’t.

It has run in-school educational packs to encourageyoungsters to understand the importance of a good bed and agood night’s sleep and joined forces with other sleep experts

and organisations to produce transatlantic and internationalstories.

More recently, an ITN news team was hired to compile areport, warning the public of the dangers of buying so-callednew mattresses from van drivers making door to door salescalls.

The Sleep Council has also extended its activities to onlinesocial media where competitions and giveaways prove popular, often working with top brands to do so. It has also introducedspecific online campaigns – such as Sleeptember and May BeTime for a New Bed – which regularly increase the number ofonline followers which now stands at over 11,000 for Twitterand more than 1,900 for Facebook.

Among the many and varied campaigns, one of the mostamusing was a mid-1990s competition asking for people torelate a favourite holiday bed story. It resulted in manyentertaining tales, but the one which capped them all was froma couple who stayed in a B&B in Ireland. When they went topush their suitcase under the bed they discovered the spacewas already taken up – by a dead body. The ‘Body Under theBed’ story prompted huge media interest.

Twenty years on from the launch, many things may havechanged – the fragmentation of media channels and platformsbeing chief among them – but the messages have not. TheSleep Council still – and always will be – encouragingconsumers to buy a new bed every seven years. And buy as bigas they can. And spend as much as they can.Visit: www.sleepcouncil.org.uk

Entrepreneurial visionFabryki Mebli Forte, which trades asForte, will be at the show fresh from itsfounder and ceo Maciej Formanowiczreceiving a special award at the Polandedition of the EY Entrepreneur of TheYear.

This international initiative promotesthe best entrepreneurs in the world andtakes place in 60 countries. The mainobjective of the contest is to awardpeople who are outstandingentrepreneurs, visionaries and businessleaders. EY Entrepreneur of The Year isalso a strong community that promotesthe value of building relations andcompany development in the businessworld.

Formanowicz says he has anentrepreneurial gene and that hissuccess will be measured by theimportance of the company he leavesbehind. He often says that Poland is partof Europe, which means it is crucial tothink in European terms when managinga company, so Forte’s European approachis noticed and appreciated by itsinternational clients.

He could be characterised by threemain strengths he has as a leader.

One is a direct relationship withemployees which allows him to supportthem in ongoing operational work. Heputs ambitious but realistic challenges infront of his team.

Second, he has a unique anddeveloped sense of business, that allowshim to set the future directions of marketdevelopment.

Third, he is in favour of things beingdone correctly and quickly: his favouritemotto is: ‘Faster eats slower and notlarger eats smaller’.

‘I am a furniture maker by profession. My father worked in the furnitureindustry and I followed that direction. The choice of professional path, however, was not easy. I am a humanist. As ayoung boy I wrote poems and I waswondering whether to study Polishliterature. Maybe I’d be the best poetamong wood technologists? From thetime perspective, I guess it was the rightchoice to do what I do. I am quite goodat producing furniture,’ he says.

An importantdate for theflooring industryThere is a great deal on offer at the NEC in January, all fivehalls are in full swing but we are particularly delighted with the response to the SMG coordinated FlooringShowcase: it will be an excellent buying opportunity fordedicated flooring buyers as well as furniture retailers fromacross the UK.

The Showcase sits among what will be by far the biggestUK home furnishings event of 2016 – all the best of Britishand international furniture is on show – top end upholsteryand cabinet right through to volume suppliers, as well as a serious number of accessories, lighting and fabricsuppliers.

The January Furniture Show has increased in size by morethan 25% for 2016, more than any other retail show in theUK, with the opportunity to see over 450 suppliers. Manysuppliers from across the interiors spectrum have takenmore space than last year and a number of manufacturershave come back to the NEC after many years of absence.

The show has always been regarded as the best positioned and most important event in the furniturecalendar – but it’s much more than that – and now with theFlooring Showcase, a Fabric Pavilion and a dedicatedaccessories hall, it is a one stop shop for all furnishingretailers regardless of their retail focus.Visit: www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

Who’s Who of flooring

Mike Symonds, SMG head of group operations

The January Furniture Show promises to be another greatevent that will represent the best of the furnishings industryand will be a massive draw for all professional retailers acrossthe UK. The historic January timing couldn’t be more perfectand being located at the NEC makes it a very easy event toattend, there is even Sunday opening.

The January Furniture Show team has worked incrediblyhard to develop an event that will meet the expectations ofboth exhibitors and visitors alike, which is no mean feat.Having had the privileged opportunity to see this vision over12 months ago it goes without saying that when SMG wasasked to consult on the development of a FlooringShowcase, we jumped at the chance.

At over 500sqm, the Flooring Showcase is now more thandouble its original size and it has become a Who’s Who of thebest manufacturers and suppliers in the UK flooring industry. The success of the Flooring Showcase has also attracted anumber of other flooring suppliers to the show with Hall 2being the focus of this activity.

The quality of the Flooring Showcase exhibitors makesthis an event that is relevant to traditional flooring retailers and furniture retailers with a flooring department. Visitors contemplating flooring as a profitable addition totheir product portfolio will have all that they will need underone roof.

You will see class leading products in carpet, rugs, vinyl, underlay, wood and accessories. Some products will be familiar but I also know that many suppliers will beusing the Flooring Showcase as a springboard for newproducts and this will give visitors a distinct advantage overtheir competitors.

I hope you will join us in making the show a success.Visit: smg-group.co.uk

New Trend Concepts has been designing, develo-ping and manufacturing hand-crafted leather sofas for more than 25 years, bringing together contemporary and traditional styles. Our history tale begins from courage, goes through love, and returns back to courage again. Thanks to his devotion and the contribution of the most valid craftsmen in the region, its founder, Giuseppe Castellano, started manufacturing sofas putting in them all his love for the job and the territory.Nothing has changed from those days. Mr Castellano is still there to pursue his original project of producing sofas conceived to become part of the customers’

lives for a long-lasting time. In fact, our motto is “From our factory to your home, with our passion for your pleasure”.Never forgetting their roots, the people at New Trend Concepts have decided to keep on living and producing in Altamura (BA), in the heart of the sofa district, where they feel they belong to. Attention to detail, raw material search, working method accuracy, a combination that makes our product unique. The design, the comfort and the originality that mark out our products represent their true value.

Price and independenceAchieving the best prices for members is the objective for ACG

‘The main reason why retailers joinAssociated Carpet Group is to enhancetheir overall profitability. At ACG we arededicated to negotiating the mostcompetitive trading terms with the mainindustry suppliers. This comes in theform of exceptional buying prices, annualrebates and promotions,’ says RichardMoore, ACG membership executive.

‘We keep it very simple: if retailerschoose to trade with the main industrysuppliers who are preferred suppliers toACG then as a member they will attractgreater profits. This has been negotiatedfrom a collective strength of 278 memberstores and strong relationships havebeen developed over many years.’

ACG is a low cost buying groupworking as a cooperative run by retailersfor the benefit of retailers. It operates onan annual subscription of £825 whichmeets the group’s running costs.Members can recover the subscriptioncost through the benefits on offer whileat the same time building profits.

The membership is made up of fiercelyindependent flooring retailers, who are

in business to make theirown decisions.

‘Retailers oftenask when they join

do they need toplace orders

with thegroup and

does it

change the way they operate? Membersdo not have to change a thing as theycontinue to trade with suppliers as theydo normally. The only difference isbecause the incentives are greaterretailers become more focused placingbusiness with group suppliers,’ he says.

‘In 2015 one of our members achieveda combined turnover with suppliers of£275,000 and received a rebate of morethan £9,000. Another member achieved aturnover of £150,000 and received arebate of just over £3,500 and a turnoverof £75,000 with suppliers earned amember £1,400. It really is up toindividual members how they usemembership but the bottom line is themore business they place with suppliersthe more rebate they will earn.’

ACG members continue to negotiatetheir own deals but with group supportthis effectively provides a broad umbrellaof benefits so they remain competitivewith all suppliers.

‘In recent years, due mainly to theincreasing over accessibility of product inthe marketplace, many retailers arefeeling threatened and are now activelylooking for protection, particularly fromboth home and online sellers,’ he says.

‘This style of retailing is designed totake away business from bricks andmortar businesses looking to offer highlevels of service. We have the answer aswe continue to invest strongly into ownlabel brands exclusively for members. The demand for this service has

accelerated over recent years and is oneof the main reasons why we areattracting so many new members.’

Members are supported with allaspects of marketing via ACG’s creativeagency including advertising, websites, social media and POS. ‘We areparticularly proud of the creation of ourACG brands which include Smart Choicefor everyday family life carpets; Finesserepresents upmarket high quality carpetsand our Special Edition which representsranges carefully selected for exceptionalvalue and protection To support thesebrands we offer highly professionaldisplay stands exclusively for ourmembers at significantly subsidisedprices. These are regularly updated withcarefully selected new ranges.’

Moore says a real benefit ofmembership is the feeling of being partof something bigger and not being soisolated. ‘As a member retailers are farbetter informed, particularly with regardsto market trends, product development, supplier sales and the general sharing ofinformation with other like-mindedretailers. We believe in goodcommunication channels which is whywe arrange a number of regionalmeetings each year inviting all ourmembers to attend. All our members arefree to do exactly what they want whichmeans they are always in control, choosing the many benefits that theywish to run with,’ he adds.Visit: www.smartercarpets.com

Right first timeConsumer research is helping to deliver a greater focus for Guardsman

Protection plans, guarantees andwarranties can be confusing for both endconsumers and retail staff. With thefurniture sector under increased scrutinyfrom both regulatory bodies andconsumer watchdog groups, it isessential that the industry focuses onproviding their customers with clearlydefined and compliant products andservices.

‘At Guardsman we have been leadingthe way and addressing these challengesthrough extensive research to gaininsight of how the end consumerperceives furniture protection plans andwhat their expectations are in terms ofthe service they will receive,’ says PhilGriffin, Guardsman md.

‘This significant investment hasprovided incredibly rich information tous and our retail partners, for which wewould like to express our thanks to thestores for their fantastic support andallowing us to conduct this at point ofsale.’

The results show that consumers valuegreatly the peace of mind offeredthrough its protection plans because

they provide solutions to damage thatcan occur to their new furniture ineveryday use. But he says the keychallenge is getting this messagethrough at the point of sale without thembeing confused by other add-onwarranty sales such as electrical wherethe cover is typically orientated to aproduct failure.

This insight has enabled the companyto redevelop its training programme andselling materials which its team ofaccount managers use to support retailpartners across the UK and Republic ofIreland.

Guardsman has also been able toidentify key findings relating toregulatory compliance, an area retailersare increasingly concerned about giventhe Financial Conduct Authority spotlighton insurance products.

‘It is essential that consumers areprovided with full and objectiveinformation when purchasing protectionplans, including those transactionscarried out online. With more furniturethan ever before being bought online,Internet sales are a valuable sales

opportunity for retailers which we canhelp them maximise,’ explains Griffin.

He says that through the findings ofthe study it has reviewed retailer websitetransaction processes and adapted itstraining to ensure all retail staff aretrained on FCA compliance and that arecord of that training is kept so that itcontinues to safeguard retailers’ brandreputations.

‘Providing clear and compliantinformation to consumers, backed upwith excellent customer service and anexpert repair service, is what our businessis built on,’ he says.

‘Our team is consistently resolvingchallenging and complex claims, delivering customer service excellenceand deploying the local technician withthe right skillsets for the specific claim, which is why we deliver industry leadingfirst visit fix ratios.

‘It’s what consumers have told us theyexpect and Guardsman works closely inpartnership with retailers and techniciansto ensure it’s what they receive,’ addsGriffin.Visit: www.guardsman.co.uk

A completeservice Castelan hasexpanded its scope

The past 12 months have seen CastelanGroup go from strength to strength andbuild on its business ethos of putting thecustomer at the heart of what it does. This approach has not only helped tocement and grow existing relationshipsbut also attract like-minded businesses.

The group continues to developproducts and services in several sectors, according to Richard Gretton, CastelanGroup commercial director.Protection plans. There are variousschemes to suit retailers’ customers, products and business model that can besold under the PremierCare brand orbespoke to the retailer. In the past yearCastelan has added a large number ofindependent retailers to its client list andlaunched bespoke schemes with Plumbsand Home Retail Group’s Argos,Homebase, Habitat and Schreiber brands.Care products. There is almost certainlya care product or kit within the rangethat will add value to a retailer’sproposition, reckons Gretton, whether it

for building furniture in the home. ‘Thisservice has seen tremendous growthsince inception and demand continuesto be strong,’ says Gretton.

Castelan offers products and servicesthat can be built into an ‘end to end’solution to customer service whichmeans the customer has a smoothjourney from issue to resolution whethervia a care product, plan or repair.

‘This, along with the other services wehave created to support and develop ourclients’ offer, place us in a great positionto own the customer journey from startto finish which is critical to answer thepromises that we make to our retailpartners. That means having strongcommercial and operational knowledge, the correct level of resources in call andclaim handling and, perhaps mostimportant, fully employing our fieldnetworks so as to ensure consistentservice at an extremely high standard,’adds Gretton.Visit: www.castelangroup.com

PROTECTION

It is important that retailers encourage consumers tothink about protection and future cleaning andmaintenance of their new furniture.

Over time, leather and fabric accumulate dirt andunnoticeable oils from skin and hair are transferredthat can cause discolouration and even cracking toleather items.

‘Our aftersales Care Kits are designed to clean andprotect all leather and fabric items. The specialistLeather Protection Cream and Fabric Protector create an invisible barrier, designed to repel all oiland water-based stains. Not only that, once the items have been treated, it retains dirt on the surface, making the leather and fabric easier tomaintain and clean in the future,’ says Ben Staerck,Furniture Clinic md.

It is important to apply a specialist protectioncream to leather as soon as the item is purchasedand every three months thereafter, he adds.

Sitting on leather causes friction, which eventuallywears away the coating causing the item to losecolour and fade. A good protection cream will absorbthis friction and help prevent these problems.

‘We advise cleaning leather once a week by wipingit down with a specialist cleaner and doing a morethorough clean every month,’ he says.

For absorbent leather it is recommended to agitatethe cleaner into a foam and apply with a spongepanel by panel. This will provide a deep clean whilekeeping the leather relatively dry to prevent waterstains. Pigmented leather should be cleaned with anatural bristle brush to deeply clean into valleys ofthe grain to prevent a build-up of dirt on thepigmented surface.

For fabric items, as well as protecting the fabric onarrival, Furniture Clinic recommends applying theFabric Protector once or twice a year on areas of lowto mid levels of use, and four times a year on areas ofhigh use, such as a fabric chair or sofa.

‘Once protected, removing dirt and stubbornstains becomes easy, with the help ofour Fabric Cleaner and Spotter.Educating the consumer on theirpurchase establishes a greater level ofexpertise. Showing aftercare knowledgeconvinces the customer you arecommitted to the longevity of theirpurchase, making it easier to sell add-onextras such as care plans and care kits,’adds Staerck.Furniture Clinic, tel: 0844 879 3691

Maxalto collections havefollowed the evolutionof high end furnituredesign for 40 years

Epitomy ofmodernism

When architects Afra and Tobia Scarpaapproached Piero Ambrogio Busnelli in1975 with the idea of designing afurniture collection, they had alreadybeen working together for almost 10years. The success of the items designedpreviously for C&B and then for B&B Italiastemmed from the collaborativeinteraction between the designers andBusnelli: together, they designedproducts based on genuine industrialcriteria, from the choice of materials tothe creation of components that couldbe assembled by machines.

However, the design culture TobiaScarpa inherited from his father Carlo waspart of his DNA, one in which artisanproduction meant a passion for manualtechniques and quality that can only beattained by processing wood and otherprecious materials by hand. Busnelli, always open to innovations and markets, accepted the proposal.

They subsequently envisaged a newcompany, which they called Maxalto, onScarpa’s suggestion taken from theVenetian Massa Alto, meaning ‘the best’,‘something of superlative quality’.

From a business standpoint, thedecision was against the mainstream ofwhat most companies were following, with artificial materials being popular.Choosing to use a natural material was, instead, reminiscent of the Scandinavianidea of organic design, revisited byScarpa. The wood used to make Maxaltoproducts is a transformer material that isprocessed to show its unexpectedcharacteristics and formal qualities.

The goal, which they achieved withseveral products – such as the Africa chairfrom the Artona collection and the New

Harmony collection – was to create iconicobjects able to stir the imagination of aneducated potential consumer andinfluence their choice of furnishings.

In 1993, Maxalto launched a productstrategy. Antonio Citterio, who haddemonstrated a significant talent forreinventing upholstery for B&B Italia, began contributing to the design of thenew Maxalto collections. For Citterio, itwas initially a study of modern or‘middle-class’ furniture as he woulddescribe the first Modus collection in1993.

Again, the use of wood was preferredfor defined and traditional pieces such asbookcases, chests of drawers, chairs andsmall armchairs.

The quality lay in the details andartisan craftsmanship, but rather thanthe creation of iconic pieces, it was moreimportant to create an atmosphere inspace exuding modern style. In otherwords, a style that does not forgo thegeometric simplification of shapes butalso accompanies it to create a refined, almost imperceptible quality, revisiting –or inventing – strictly artisanalproduction techniques.

As the different collections evolved(Apta, 1996; Simplice, 2000; AC, 2002;Acro, 2010; Lux, 2012), the age thatbecame the cultural reference point forthe new Maxalto was more clearlydefined: that happy but brief period ofabout 20 years that Europe enjoyedbetween the two World Wars. An age inwhich a certain mechanical aspect of

modernist furniture (à la Le Corbusier orMarcel Breuer, for instance) was softenedby the great Art Deco interior designerssuch as Jacques Adnet, Robert Mallet-Stevens and Jean-Michel Frank.

Citterio was particularly clever at thisdifficult task and succeeded in achieving,in later experiments, his goal of creatinga series of pieces that couldcommunicate among themselves in acommon language of shapes andmaterials to make up the entire interiordesign of a home. The product range wasalso expanded with this intention toinclude sofas, armchairs and accessories, creating a catalogue rich in differentshapes, materials and productiontechniques, with elegant and detailedsolutions.

As such Maxalto gradually establishedits unique identity on the market, whichis completely separate from the designand production aims of B&B Italia.Though it uses the same research and

development centre and follows thesame quality standards for materials andproduction processes, Maxalto has itsown factory where it manages theprocessing of woods and other materials.

Forty years after it was founded, thereis still no doubt that the intuition ofMaxalto’s founder, Busnelli, was right toenvisage a new business, a strategy thathas been further developed by his sonGiorgio. Alongside the inventive andexperimental side of the industry, there isa big market segment with a largenumber of consumers who are attractedby the continuity of craft qualitybetween the past and the present inwhich the emphasis remains very muchon modern design.Visit: http://40.maxalto.it/
