There was much activity just before andduring the January Furniture Show withsuppliers changing their price lists to reflectthe fact that buying in US dollars was gettingmore expensive – in the past 12 months theamount a pound would get you hasfluctuated between $1.3872 and $1.5879.

But understandably few want to quantifyits impact on the bottom line. DFS hashelpfully put a proper number on how muchexchange rates can cost: for every variationof just 1cent its profits can fall or rise by£500,000.

It has warned that unless the exchangerate heads back in the right direction by thesummer (something it has been doing for thepast couple of weeks as I write) it – andeveryone else buying in US dollars – will have

to consider increasing prices if margins arenot to be hit.

If the rate doesn’t recover quickly enough,or not at all, who will be the first to blink andput up prices?

Steinhoff International walked away frombidding £1.42bn for Argos on bid deadlineday, preferring to pay £673m to expand itspresence in the French furniture andelectrical markets with Darty. Steinhoff saysArgos is a ‘compelling business with uniqueattributes that remains attractive on manyfronts’ but didn’t meet its investment criteria. One of Argos’ attributes is that it has £625mof cash. Sainsbury’s says it has identified£160m of savings: £40m more than it firstthought, so it is effectively only paying£615m. Different criteria?

In the March issue I said a carpetmanufacturer had been bought, but not byVictoria. Now another month has passedwithout a buy (at the time of writing) but notfor the want of Victoria’s trying as GeoffWilding looks to make Lano his firstacquisition in continental Europe. Victoria’sshare price continues to climb with CantorFitzgerald setting a target price of £17.50after upbeat news on profits (see p6).

If the US dollar/poundsterling exchange ratedoesn’t improve, retailersface having to increaseprices to protect margins

DFS profits upas Dreams ‘is ahead of plan’DFS has seen EBITDA profits jump by 12.3% to £31m in the sixmonths to 30 January. Group sales rose by 7% to £461.3m, with 6.2%of that coming from DFS, along with growth from Dwell and SofaWorkshop.

Free cashflow increased by 7.1% to £37.7m, debt was cut by £4.1mto £158.1m and the interim dividend was raised by 12.9% to 3.5p ashare, worth £7.5m.

It is to accelerate its conversion of in-store warehousing to retailspace, which has released 108,000sqft of space across 19 stores. Fivemore regional centres will open before the end of July, increasing thenumber to 12.

A second small format trial store is to open in the Glades shoppingcentre, Bromley, south east London, this month.

It warned that while hedging had protected margins, if the USdollar exchange rate continues it – and other furniture retailers – willhave to consider increasing prices. Every 1cent change costs it£500,000 in profits.

Meanwhile, bed retailer Dreams saw EBITDA profits leap by 207%to £21.1m in the year to 24 December.

Sales rose by 16% to £234.2m, with like for like sales up 19.4%.Online sales increased by 41%.

‘The three-year turnaround strategy we launched in 2014 isprogressing ahead of plan. Every Dreams store has now beenrefurbished, at a total cost of £5m. The positive response from ourcustomers to this investment resulted in sales per square footincreasing 21%,’ says Mike Logue, Dreams ceo.

All home delivery vans have also been replaced and its Oldburyfactory is benefiting from new equipment, a restructured team andmuch simplified processes, which has seen products continuallyimproved resulting in reduced returns.

‘Like for like sales in the second half of the year grew 30% year on year and we have seen that growth rate continue into this year,’Logue adds.

Victoria profits‘materially ahead’Flooring group Victoria says its profits will be‘materially ahead’ of market expectations as talksabout buying Lano continue.

The company says pre-tax and exceptional itemsprofits will be ‘materially ahead of current consensusmarket expectations for the financial year ending 2 April 2016.

‘The group’s recent acquisitions have now beenfully integrated and the associated operationalsynergies have resulted in improved gross profitmargins, which the board anticipates will continueto accrue into 2017. In addition, the group’sbusinesses have seen a strong performance in thekey UK and Australian markets,’ it says.

‘Furthermore, due to the continued focus onimproved cash generation there will be a materialreduction in group net debt and the net debt toEBITDA ratio since the interim results.

‘The discussions regarding the potentialacquisition of Lano Carpets are ongoing and afurther announcement will be made in due course.’

Three times a winner: Dara O Briain (left) presents KitchensInternational with its UK Kitchen Retailer of the Year award atthe KBB Review awards. The chain, which has six stores inScotland, won the award for the third time in eight years.

Storm blows salesThe wet and windy weather brought by Storm Katiekept shoppers away over the Easter weekend.

The fine weather on Good Friday saw shoppersout in force with high street footfall up by 16.4%,according to footfall analyst Springboard. Visitors to retail parks rose by 5.5% and shopping centres by 0.4%.

But on Saturday and Monday numbers droppedby 10.5% for high streets compared with Easter2015. Shopping centre visitors dropped by 6%.

Roche Bobois exceedsexpectations in the UKUpholstery retailer and manufacturer Roche Bobois enjoyeda better than expected UK performance last year, as overallsales reached €437m.

UK sales increased by 6% which, according to MelindaChandler, Roche Bobois UK marketing director, ‘was betterthan expected given that 2014 was a phenomenal year forthe UK with a 15% year on year increase attributed only inpart to the opening of a new showroom in Chelsea in thelast quarter.’

The volume of orders increased in the year but averageorder size dropped after a slight decrease in the number of£200,000-plus projects.

‘In terms of trends and key product types, we’ve seen asignificant increase in the volume of sales of fabric sofas – asopposed to leather – with our Mah Jong and Long Islandmodels being the consistent bestsellers,’ she says.

Overall turnover rose by 7%, with non-French sales risingby 13% to €254m. Exports now account for 58% of sales, upfrom 55% in 2014.

Nineteen stores were opened or relocated during the yearwith at least a further 12 new stores planned for this year.

Special dividend boost forHeadlam shareholdersHeadlam is to return more than £5m to shareholders in aspecial dividend.

The group will make the payment of 6p per share nextmonth after building of its £13.5m distribution centre inIpswich was delayed by planning processes. Work is nowexpected to begin later this year. It will also increase its finaldividend by 19.5% to 14.7p after pre-tax profits rose by17.6% to £35.6m in the year to 31 December.

‘Group revenues were up 3% at £654.1m. In the UK, whichrepresented 88% of group sales, revenues were up 4.9% at£575.3m, reflecting organic and acquisitive growth,’ saysDick Peters, Headlam chairman.

On a like for like basis, UK revenues were up 3.9% at£570m. The growth in the second half was less than the first

half increase of 5.4%, reflecting in part strong second halfcomparatives in 2014.

Tony Brewer, Headlam group chief executive, says: ‘2015was another year of revenue, profit and market sharegrowth at Headlam and a year of significant cash generation[net funds increased by £19.3m to £43.9m]. Given that thecurrent cycle of large capital expenditure is more or lesscomplete, with just the construction of the Ipswichdistribution facility remaining, the board has elected toreturn cash to shareholders.

‘Trading in the current year has started well, with like forlike growth in the UK of 6.3% during the first eight weeks ofthe year. We are confident that the group will continue toperform well during the year ahead,’ he adds.

Bensons and Harveys ownerSteinhoff International hasdecided against bidding forArgos owner Home RetailGroup, instead opting to bidfor French furniture andelectrical chain Darty.

Steinhoff has bid £673m forDarty through its Conforamasubsidiary after saying itwould not go ahead with its£1.42bn offer for HRG.

Sainsbury’s has offered£1.4bn for HRG.

Proposals to build 76 flats in the top fourfloors of department store chain Beales’flagship Bournemouth store would haveno parking and access via existingstairways and lifts, a planning applicationhas revealed.

AEW UK Core Property Fund wants tobuild 65 studio and 11 one bedroomflats. ‘Beales currently occupies six floorsof the building for retail and associateduses and does not have the turnover tocontinue to justify this amount offloorspace, particularly as sales aredeclining. The proposal will enableBeales to consolidate and streamline its

retail space to the basement, ground, first and second floors, with theremaining upper floors converted to 76residential apartments,’ says theapplication. Beales entered a 35-yearlease with Prudential Insurance Companyin January 1988. AEW now has the lease.

Beales objects to the plans and says ithas a series of improvements planned forthe store, on the site of its first whichopened in 1881. Bournemouth BoroughCouncil planning guidelines say thereshould be one parking space per flat andone visitor space for every three flats.

Meanwhile, the chain secured backing

from 90% of its creditors to cut the renton 14 properties. It had warned if thecompany voluntary arrangement was notagreed the 29-store chain was likely togo into administration.

‘This vote gives Beales a uniqueopportunity to restore the group tofinancial health. We are extremelygrateful to our business partners for theiroverwhelming support. These legacyrents have been dragging the groupdown. Our landlords now have theopportunity to restructure them onequitable terms,’ says Stuart Lyons, Bealeschairman.

There are times when a man needs a cupof tea and nothing else will do. It was along journey and I’d stopped at asupermarket cafe.

‘Large tea to take away, please.’‘We only do one size, it’s company

policy, and it’s this small size’ was thedisinterested response.

Three sizes of takeaway cups werestacked by the enormous, expensivecoffee machine. I’d bought large teasfrom this place lots of times previously. But apparently the manager had toldthem they weren’t to serve tea in thelarge cups and they simply had to do asthey had been told.

Their response to my questions was:‘No, the manager’s not here. No, we don’tknow why he’s stopped us serving largeteas, but we got into trouble last time. No, I can’t give you a small tea and then alarge cup with some hot water in it.’

The dead horse remained undisturbed.I took my tea and continued my journey. It didn’t last long, but the bitter taste ofthat experience did.

As I had used my loyalty card that thecomputer recognised, a few days later I

Use data to improveDon’t just collect information, learn from it

Valuable feedback is gained on social media

received an email asking me to reviewmy experience. I did, with relish. I suspectmy response was one of many hundredsreceived that day and that they havedata from tens or hundreds of thousandsof transactions from recent months.Collecting data is easy. Creatingimprovements isn’t.

In our businesses we deal with lessfrequent purchases and bigger pricetickets. For some years now, mysteryshopping has been a great way to assesshow good our shops are and whetherour sales teams are doing their job as weexpect them to.

We get feedback on our websites, onsocial media and on independent reviewsites such as Feefo and Mumsnet. We usesurvey tools with specific questionsfocusing on the key aspects of ourservice so that customers can tell us howit was for them after we’ve deliveredtheir goods.

We may even talk to customers fromtime to time. I’m sorry if that soundscynical, but technology is stealingopportunities and the ability to havemeaningful conversations – how often

Richard Renouf

do you see a salesperson sitting at acomputer when customers are lookingfor help? As I said, collecting data is easy.Creating improvements isn’t.

How do you move from data collectiontowards change? First, data needs to beturned into information. What are thethings that customers find good aboutour service? What frustrates them? Whatproportion of customers raise theseissues? What should we tackle first?

In all of this, however, remember who’sclosest to your customers. I’m sure thetwo sales people in the cafe (for that’sultimately what they were) were nothappy having to respond to frustratedcustomers like me. But their managerwasn’t listening to them or supportingthem as they tried to implement achange they didn’t understand andwhich made their jobs more difficult.

‘From day one leather should beconditioned and protected: it should bethe first thing everyone does uponreceiving their furniture,’ says BenStaerck, Furniture Clinic md.

To help make the leather last longerand to enhance its natural beauty thecompany has created the four seasonsleather care plan. The aim is to remindusers to clean and protect their leatherfour times a year at the start of eachseason.

To maintain leather, Staerckrecommends using its leather care kit. This safely cleans all leather back to a‘new’ condition. After applying theprotection cream, all future dirt is heldon the barrier it creates so wipes off

Sitting on leather causes friction andcontinuous friction will wear away thecoating, causing the leather to becomerough and faded. The colour may evenstart to peel and wear off. The protectioncream adds an invisible barrier andabsorbs all friction and so helps preventthese problems.Visit: www.furnitureclinic.co.uk

Regular treatment helpsleather last longer

easily, helping to stop the leatherabsorbing dirt. It feeds the leather withnatural oils and waxes preventing it fromdrying out and cracking.

Added barrier protection technologyin the cream allows the leather to repeloil and water-based stains, retainingthem on the surface so it can easily bewiped clean.

CommitmentStaingard has turned 10 this year

‘This year marks the 10th anniversary ofthe foundation of Staingard and 10 yearson, the foundation is solid,’ says PaulAiston, Staingard md. ‘The next 10 yearslooks set to be even better on the backof the latest business developments.

‘The unstinting commitment to thedevelopment of the industry’s mostcomprehensive range of furnitureprotection and care products continuesto see Staingard experiencing growth aswe capitalise on our dedicated approachto a very personal, straightforward andflexible approach to the delivery of ourproducts and schemes to the UK’s mostdiscerning of furniture retailers. Growthhas been fuelled by our commitment tothese basic principles and our dedicationto the furniture trade. Future growthlooks assured as we continue to grow onthe strength of the many referrals fromour retail customers.’

Staingard continues to increase itsteam of dedicated furniture professionalswith several key appointments over thelast year covering product development, training and account management. But

family values still underpin the corephilosophy behind the business.

‘Having both my sons working in thebusiness gives us great affinity withmany customers who are themselvesfamily businesses,’ says Aiston.

‘However, having a great team is onlypart of the story and this is where theStaingard proposition makes it the envyof our rivals. The development of theindustry’s best products for theprotection, care and repair of furniture isongoing and our production anddistribution facilities in Chester haverecently undergone significantinvestment and growth enabling them toproduce, package and distribute all ofour products,’ he says.

Aiston says the facility ensures that itcontinues to offer not only the bestproducts but a flexible approach to itsdelivery to market with many retailersbenefiting from bespoke packaging witha modest commitment to stock andleading delivery of order times.

‘Building our production team inChester that shared our vision of the

future and our total focus on being thebest in class has been at the heart of allour investment in people and servicedelivery,’ says James Aiston, Staingardoperations manager.

Strategic relationships are importantwith Leather Master for leather productsand Delis for bedding productsdemonstrating that commitment.

‘Further evidence of this is theenduring and very successful partnershipwith Homeserve Furniture Repairs whichhas created a powerful alliance that seesStaingard working with the UK’s largestindependent team of furniture repairspecialists,’ says Paul Aiston.

This collaboration is now in its seventhyear and has provided a sound basis forthe development of insured furniturecare plans by ensuring that repair costsare controlled. The joint development ofadministration systems and operationalstrength lies at the heart of thispartnership and will continue to providean edge in the growth of Staingard, headds.Visit: www.staingard.co.uk

Going theextra mileGuardsman values its retail partners

Both the retail market and sales offurniture protection plans continue toshow excellent growth, reckons PhilGriffin, Guardsman md. This is despitenervousness of regulatory changesfollowing last year’s Financial ConductAuthority thematic reviews into add-onsand outsourcing.

‘These FCA reports have set out whatwas already one of our core values;putting the consumer at the very heartof everything we do to ensure that theyget best value and positive outcomes. We have consistently invested in researchto gain insight into consumerexpectations of a protection plan. Fromthis we have redeveloped our terms and conditions and selling materials tooffer and clearly set out superiorcoverage without those tricky exclusionsand restrictions which can lead to

consumer disappointment,’ he says.As the sector will continue to be under

close scrutiny of regulators, Guardsmanhas worked with underwriters to developa simple process to implement keycompliance requirements and has rolledout online initiatives to support retailpartners and help protect their brands.

‘We take a responsible but commercialapproach to the ever-changingregulatory environment, and through adedicated team of account managersprovide bespoke training for retailers.Through this programme, both existingand new customers can confidentlycontinue to offer this great proposition totheir customers,’ he says.

The company’s network of skilledspecialist technicians, coupled withcustomer service, allow consumers tofully enjoy their furniture investments.

This creates a positive halo effect for theretailer which in turn builds significantbrand loyalty and future sales, he says.

‘We go the extra mile for our retailpartners. One of our new customers hadfirst-hand experience of just how goodour stain removal specialists are when itsnew London showroom, due to open thenext day, was vandalised with spray paintdamage to virtually every roomset in thestore,’ he explains.

Safeclean by Guardsman technician,Rick Knight, came to the rescue. Using hisexpertise, specialist cleaning fluids andmachinery, he restored the furniture toshowroom condition in two days.

‘This saved several weeks of delayedopening and has demonstrated theadded value that a partnership withGuardsman can deliver,’ adds Griffin.Visit: www.guardsman.co.uk

European indoor heptathlete champion and Olympic 2016hopeful Katarina Johnson-Thompson, is the latest athlete tosupport Slumberland’s Healthy Sleep campaign. In her ownwords, sleeping is something she ‘knows a lot about.’

Johnson-Thompson has a strict training regime, and rest is a vital part of this. ‘The importance of sleep: to me it’s vital. Mycoach has a strong mentality on getting the right recovery. Hesays it’s important to have rest days to make sure my bodyrecoups properly and I’m ready to train the next day. I always tryto get the most sleep I possibly can, I aim for 10 hours,’ she says.

Richard Naylor, Slumberland marketing director, is delightedto have Johnson-Thompson on board raising awareness aboutthe importance of sleep.

‘We have long known the impact that sleep has on healthand wellbeing, yet it can often be neglected. We hope toeducate the nation about healthy sleep habits, and Katarina isthe perfect example of how sleep can be the deciding factor inperformance.’

Former Manchester City head of sports medicine andEngland RFU senior team doctor Phil Batty, now a consultant insports and exercise medicine at Isokinetic Medical Group, supports Johnson-Thompson’s view on the importance of sleepin sport. ‘Sleep is vital and possibly the most important aspectof recovery. Individuals vary in their sleep requirements and this is monitored by daily wellbeing questionnaires that recordthe player’s perception of their sleep and wellness. It is notalways a matter of the amount of sleep, but the quality of thesleep’, he says.

‘The Slumberland Harmony Collection uses a uniquecombination of innovative materials to create a healthy sleepenvironment. By ensuring better air circulation, varying levels ofsupport, and a healthy mattress lifespan, you can enjoy a betternight’s sleep and the health benefits this brings,’ adds Naylor.Visit: www.slumberland.co.uk

Be appyTechnology is makingLVT easier to fit and sell

‘Flooring retailers are becoming muchsavvier when it comes to digitalplatforms, and they can see the benefitsof utilising the right apps and onlinetools to support their business at thepoint of sale,’ says Scott Cochrane,Karndean Designflooring retail salesdirector.

With more than 20,000 downloads inthe UK to date, the Augmented Reality(AR) app is a sophisticated tool forhomeowners to view any Karndean floorin their home, in real time. It allows usersto check out what light wood planks looklike in their kitchen and then swap it for alight stone look tile, or maybe evenparquet. The app is fully integrated withsocial media networks – Facebook andTwitter – so users can easily post theirfavourites online and gain feedback fromfriends and family.

‘It’s proven to be a big success with our

independent retailer network, who verymuch see the app as an extra sales toolto help customers with their decisionmaking process. It’s great to know it isbeing demonstrated and championed instore by our retailers,’ he says.

Karndean has also updated itsinteractive Floorstyle tool offeringinterior design inspiration online. Thisallows retailers to demonstrate individualproducts to customers in a room of theirchoice. With a choice of roomset images, retailers can also showcase floor designsin various interior decor schemes, add indesign strips and compare favouritedesigns side by side.

‘With so many trends, designs andstyles available, the Floorstyle tool givesindependent retailers the ability to goone step further in helping theircustomers choose the right floor designin-store.

‘Alongside the app, our latestFloorstyle update means our retailershave our entire product collectionavailable at their fingertips,’ addsCochrane.

Since Quick-Step began producing LVTin late 2014 it has continually tested itsproducts for stability. LVT floors are madeof thermoplastic materials, which meansthey tend to expand in warm conditions, and shrink in cold environments. This canresult in warping and open joints. Localhotspots, like big, south-facing windows, are critical for most LVT click flooring.

‘Ever since we started producing LVTvarious tests have confirmed that ourproduct is even more stable than initiallyassumed. Today, we can say withcertainty that Quick-Step offers the moststable LVT for floating installation on themarket’, says Laurent Meersseman, Quick-Step research and development director.

‘To achieve this exceptional heatresistance, we have focused on “fourpillars of stability”: in-house research anddevelopment of all the floor’scomponents; full control over theproduction process through verticalintegration; our expertise in developingthe best and most-used click system inthe world; and a clear focus on qualitythrough in-house testing andmeasurement techniques,’ he says.

All raw materials are screened duringthe procurement process and it only usesits own internal waste as recycledcontent for the base layer. The fibreglassfor its LVT is produced in-house,

making it three times stronger than theindustry standard, he says.

The production line at Wielsbeke hasbeen specifically adapted for click LVTs.The flat production process preventscracks in the fibreglass and avoidsputting additional stress in the product. An exceptionally long annealing furnaceline allows it to alternately heat and coolthe LVT to eliminate any remaining stressin the product.

‘All of this results in LVT-flooring withunprecedented stability. For end-users,this means there is no need for transitionprofiles between rooms. Furthermore, unlimited installation is possible both inlength and width without the use ofexpansion profiles. The end result is asleeker finish, and an overall better-looking floor,’ he adds.

Berry Alloc’s Pure LVT has connecting

tabs on all four sides to speed upinstallation. With Dream Click there is noneed to walk back to the other side ofthe room to start the next row. The fittercan start the installation in either cornerof the room and click their way to theother side. The next row can be startedwhere they’ve finished the previous row.As the planks can be clicked together onall sides, installation can be started in anydirection.

Several fitters can work simultaneouslyon the same floor to speed upinstallation further. The tabs also make iteasy to mix and match different decorsand create various patterns. Dream Clickhas a lock strength of 500kg.

Amtico’s Click range has beendesigned to be laid without adhesive:each tile is loose laid and are simplylocked in to one another.

Easy to clean, Amtico Click is warmunderfoot and suitable for a wide rangeof residential and commercial areas –even heavy moisture areas such askitchens or bathrooms.

The range comes in larger sized plankstyles and with abstract designs added tothe collection in recent years – like OxideCopper, Platinum and Iron – the breadthof the colour palette brings new tonalvariations to a whole host of potentialspaces.

Amtico Click can be laid directly overmost hard surface floors, and iscompatible with a variety of underfloorheating systems, ensuring they don’texceed 27degC.Visit: www.amtico.comwww.berryalloc.comwww.karndean.com/floorstyle www.quick-step.co.uk

ROYAL WARRANTS

Mark of recognitionRoyal warrants can be traced back to medieval times

A Royal Warrant of Appointment is amark of recognition of those who havesupplied goods or services to thehouseholds of the Queen, Duke ofEdinburgh or Prince of Wales for at leastfive years, and who have an ongoingtrading arrangement.

It is the Monarch who decides whomay grant royal warrants. These areknown as the Grantors: the Queen, Dukeof Edinburgh and Prince of Wales.

The royal warrant is the document thatappoints the company in its tradingcapacity, and is granted to a namedindividual, known as the Grantee. Theroyal warrant gives the Granteepermission, and responsibility, for thedisplay of the relevant Royal Arms in

government agencies for example – or tonewspapers, magazines, journals, periodicals or similar publications.

Royal warrants are granted for up tofive years.

Their history can be traced back tomedieval times, when competition forroyal favour was intense and theMonarch had the pick of the country’sbest tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord Chamberlain, as head of theroyal household, formally appointedtradespeople with a Royal Warrant ofAppointment – a practice that continuesto this day.

In the 18th century, royal tradesmenbegan displaying the Royal Arms on theirpremises and stationery.

In 1990 the Royal Warrant HoldersAssociation, which represents thewarrant holders and polices how theRoyal Arms are used, set up the QueenElizabeth Scholarship Trust to mark its150th anniversary and the QueenMother’s 90th birthday and earlier thisyear the Queen became patron of QEST.QEST funds the education of talentedcraftspeople through traditional collegecourses, apprenticeships and one-on-onetraining with master artisans. connection with the business. There are about 800 royal warrant

holders representing a huge cross-section of trade and industry, fromindividual craftspeople to multinationals. They are united by a commitment to thehighest standards of service, quality andexcellence.

Companies can apply for the accoladeafter they have supplied the householdsof the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh orPrince of Wales with goods or services forat least five years out of seven (to includeduring the 12 months before applying).

They are not granted for professionalservices – bankers, brokers or agents, solicitors, employment agencies, trainingproviders, veterinary services,

Sign of trustHypnos was first awarded a royal warrant in 1929

‘Being awarded a royal warrant is aprestigious accolade. It’s not just a markof quality, expertise and the best inBritish craftsmanship, but also a sign oftrust: trust from the Royal family inHypnos’ abilities and a level of trust forour customers to buy into. It’s somethingwe don’t take lightly and why we’realways striving to create supremelystylish, comfortable beds,’ says JamesKeen, Hypnos md, and fifth generation ofthe Keen family to work in the business.

‘With over 100 years of experience inhand-crafting bespoke, luxury beds forthe finest houses and hotels around theworld, our royal warrant is as much a partof our history as our beds are,’ he says.

First granted to the Keen family in1929 by King George V and laterrenewed by Queen Elizabeth II, thecompany supplies beds for the royalhouseholds and family. It has also givenpresentations at Buckingham Palace tothe royal households on the importanceof sleep and its impact on health.

‘It is achievements such as this whichhave made the royal warrant an integralpart of the way we operate, becomingpart of who we are as a family-runcompany,’ he explains.

‘Additionally, it acts as a guide in thepursuit of innovation, helping toreinforce the strength of our offering. It’sthis synergy that has assisted us inbreaking international markets and givenour retailers confidence that ourproducts stand out against othermanufacturers.’

The royal warrant challenges thecompany to be innovative andsustainable. Keen says it’s one of thereasons why its divans are made usingFSC or PEFC certified timbers andmattresses are made using natural fibres.

‘This responsible approach meanswe’re the first carbon neutral bed maker in the country, with all beds 100% recyclable at the end of their life. We’re incredibly proud of the royalwarrant, which has become a way of life for us, infiltrating everything we do,’he adds.Visit: www.hypnosbeds.com

Corndell has expanded its Annecy bedroom range into theliving room

Last year it relaunched the Annecy bedroom range to muchacclaim from retailers and strong sales. The relaunch includedthe addition of a number of pieces and, most critically, theextension of the natural paint finish options to seven. Theintroduction of a wider colour choice tapped into consumers’demand for painted furniture and the desire to choose from anextensive palette, and this trend continues to grow.

From its factory in Witney, Oxford, Corndell is able to ensureconsistent painted finish production, providing a look whichhighlights the crisp detailing of the cabinets and a wide rangeof colours supplied to order. This locally managed processallows retailers to offer their customers choice across a range ofcolour, handle and product options.

Now the company has produced Annecy for living anddining, while introducing a pale limed oak top.

Key pieces in the dining range are a cross-backedupholstered dining chair and an extending, limed oak toppedtable which, with its tapered legs and hand-painted finish, has aGustavian character.

The Annecy living dining range is made up of 17 piecesincluding dressers, either open with oak plate racks, drawersand display shelves, or glazed with an oak interior. The dressertops sit upon a choice of sideboards available in 1,040mm and1,475mm widths.

All Annecy products are available in a hand-painted naturallyinspired palette that includes white; pale chalk; cotton – themost popular finish selected for in-store displays with its coolgrey tone; pale taupe, pale blue grey Haze; traditional soft, green grey Ledum; and a deeper, warm grey Fawn. The paintedfinish options tone with the limed oak top, which gives Annecyliving and dining pieces a slightly more contemporary style.

Further personalisation is created by the wide choice

of handles in this range: wooden; nickel twist; a chrome cuphandle with a more classic look; a crystal handle is softer andmore ornate; while the simple chrome button handle has aclean, contemporary style.

Product development continues at a pace, but the companyhasn’t overlooked the importance of the continuingdevelopment of brand, service and communication. If anything, the results and feedback experienced during 2015 haveestablished the relevance of these factors, and in particularbrand development combined with consumer insight.

The company says that the consumer attitudes forecast bytrend specialist Trend Bible will boost its ‘From here…’ brand positioning: consumers are buying better, looking forlongevity and provenance in the products they invest in for the home; the desire to slow down the pace of lifeinfluences a focus on the simple things; and consumers takeback control of their environments and look at ways to invest inlocal concerns.

To enable retailers and consumers to be inspired Corndell haslaunched a raft of social media feeds: @CorndellFurn on Twitterusing #NewAtCorndell; Pinterest.com/corndellfurn;Facebook.com/corndellfurniture and Corndell Furniture onLinkedin.Tel: 01993 776 545

Now she is the award-winning design director for the company,India’s largest manufacturer of hand-woven floorcoverings employing 40,000people in 600 villages.

The Free Verse collection is a moderninterpretation of age-old observations.Rugs can broadly be divided into twogroups – the first is a collection of hand-touched images. Evoking a sense ofnostalgia despite being contemporary, these rugs include age-old rug patternstraced by an inexperienced hand or a cityscape drawn painstakingly andimprecisely by a ‘non-artist’.

Imitation of hand by machine is thesecond mood these rugs capture: thedigital impression of crumpled foil or

SHOW GUIDE

MasterPiece will unveil its latest software for iPad andAndroid tablets at the show. ‘There is a clear attraction herefor those who have already invested in a tablet without thefurther expense of a laptop. However, the new version has afurther benefit by saving jobs to the cloud, so they areimmediately available to colleagues back in the store,’ saysCharles Pearson, MasterPiece md.

The new version has many of the usability benefits oftraditional PC-based MasterPiece, according to Pearson.Drawing and measuring of rooms is done the same way aswhen using paper and pencil. In addition, the new stairwaybuilder provides a significantly faster way of defining thecomponents of a stairway.

The leap forward with MasterPiece is captured by JonEvans, All 4 Floors owner in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

‘If you’re thinking of using estimating software then Iwould certainly give MasterPiece a call as I now wouldn’tuse anything else. After trying several other systems I found

that MasterPiece was simple to use and the online andtelephone support is good. MasterPiece has a very simpledrag and drop system for planning. Being a one-man-bandwith constant measuring every day, I’m now able tocomplete my plans and quotes in minutes. Gone are thedays of sitting down each evening with various pads andgraph paper,’ he says.

The full MasterPiece supports vinyl tile product sets fromsuppliers including Amtico, Karndean, Forbo, Lifestyle,Moduleo and Project Floors. Recent enhancements givecloser alignment with the way UK retailers operate. Forinstance, MasterPiece now directly supports retailers whoprice with underlay and fitting included and also those whoquote ballpark prices without having measurements.

‘MasterPiece’s integration with other UK systems such asSwan Retail is bearing fruit, with more retailers who do bothcarpet and furniture coming on board,’ adds Pearson.Visit: www.masterpiece-system.com

Embracing changeChange can be challenging but, for the most part, we take itin our stride. However, when we have the choice betweenmaking a change and sticking with what we know then wewill usually stick with what we know: habits can be difficultto break.

‘If you want your flooring business to take a significantstep forward then the single best thing that you can doright now is explore electronic measuring and quantifying. However, implementing electronic measuring andquantifying will require a change to how we have beendoing our job. In situations like this we need to break long-standing habits and learn new skills that in time willbecome our new habits’, says Brian Gray, RFMS-UK director.

Managing this change can be a challenge, he says, butthere are a number of things everyone involved in theprocess should understand: a software solution does notreplace good people and it is not a substitute for experienceand common sense; it will not make existing staffredundant but it will make them more professional, quickerand more accurate; and businesses must move with thetimes if they will not just survive, but thrive.

‘Electronic quantifying is notgoing away. Just as the lasermeasuring device is taking overfrom the tape measure, softwaresolutions are taking over from thescale rule and calculator. The earlyadopters are enjoying a competitiveadvantage over their competitorsbecause they have recognised thebenefits and made the change. Indoing so they have overcome thelong established habits of veryexperienced quantifiers: quantifiers

who would now never go back to the traditional methods,’he adds.

IFFS had many new features

Polish designer Katarzyna Kempa wonthe Furniture Design Award at the recentInternational Furniture Fair Singapore, forher Sit stool and worktable. Her prize is£10,300 plus a stand at the 2017 show, while the other 13 finalists will have theirdesigns on display.

‘Sit is a body-minded wooden stooland worktable which together create anactive working environment. It is a freshperspective on the world of officeseating. It is a reevaluation of how tocreate good habits and have the bestworkspace for our body. We are born tomove, movement is what our bodyneeds while we work. This stool presentsa new work height coupled with an

elastomer bushing which keeps usmoving while we sit,’ says Kempa.

These micro-movements activate thelubrication of intervertebral discs, preventing the stiff feeling experiencedfrom sitting in a fixed position for longperiods. The shape and height of thestool puts the body in an optimalposition where the hip, heel, andshoulder are in vertical alignment andweight is spread between feet and back.

‘A small backrest acts to position theback in a good direction while serving adouble function as a handle allowing youto easily move the stool. At a table, youcan work both sitting and standing.Across the base is a rolling bar which

stimulates pressure points in the feetimproving circulation, reducing the painof tired feet, and making the body feelgood overall,’ she says.

The show, which had 423 exhibitorsfrom 29 countries, including participantsfrom Lebanon, Mexico, Republic ofIreland and Russia for the first time, sawseveral design-focused initiatives andprojects promoting the show’s theme ofCelebrate Inspiration. Gamification, aninteractive ‘play area’ dedicated torelaxation that included a shuffleboardtable, ping-pong table, and a foosballtable, was set up in collaboration withDistrict Eight Design.
