EXPERIENCEAsilia’s ‘Best of the Big Cats’ itinerary takes lion, leopard and cheetah lovers to the very heart of the action—Rekero Camp in the Maasi Mara National Reserve and our new camp, Namiri Plains, in the Serengeti. For twenty years Namiri Plains was closed to tourism and the population of big cats literally exploded. This itinerary offers unparallelled wildlife viewing opportunities.

COUNTRY INFORMATION

Namiri Plains is located where the southern short grass plains meet the acacia woodland. The Ngare Nanyuki underground river creates pockets of permanent water that support year-round game concentrations. With an abundance of prey all around, cheetah, lion, leopard and other predators flock to the area in large numbers and they are frequently seen resting on the rocky kopjes that are dotted over the landscape.

From October to May - the eastern plains adjacent to the volcanic highlands, which are rich in fertile and nutrient-rich soils deposited there millions years ago, are blanketed with newly-sprouted grass that draws wildebeest and other game to Namiri Plains in huge numbers. As far as the eye can see, the plains heave and sway like a grey-black wave as hundreds of thousands of animals come to feast at the lush green banquet.

At the same time, the abundant wildlife provides Namiri Plains’ big cats the opportunity to gorge themselves at will and the opportunities to witness spectacular kills are plentiful.

During the rains this area of the Serengeti is home to some of the highest concentrations of hyena in Africa and clans of up to 30 are regularly spotted scavenging on kills in the wake of the alpha predators. Zebra, Thompson’s gazelle and eland also migrate to Namiri Plains and herds of over a hundred and more are commonplace.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Namiri Plains, in the remote Eastern corner of the Serengeti, is the realisation of a dream for all of us at Asilia. The area, that was closed for 20 years to create a safe haven for cheetah, opens in July 2014 and Asilia has been appointed as its custodian.

This is big cat country and undoubtedly offers East Africa’s best cheetah viewing opportunities. Namiri Plains camp was created for real safari enthusiasts wanting a high level of comfort in secluded surroundings, excellent guiding and a deeper, more intense wildlife experience. Tucked away in a grove of fever trees, this small and very exclusive camp has terrific views over the endless sweeping plains that surround it.

6 traditional safari tents offer more than enough of the creature comforts - crisp linen, spacious verandas and the kind of cooking that, when enjoyed under a glittering canopy of African stars, will remain with you forever.

Explore the Namiri Plains on daily game drives; enjoy sunrise breakfast picnics on top of Soit Le Motonyi rock or sundowners on top of a kopje. With your nearest neighbour over 45 minutes away, you may be excused for thinking that Namiri Plains actually does belong to you.

Visit the Namiri Plains website.

NATIONAL PARKSThe world famous Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR) covers an area of 1510 km2 and is located in southwest Kenya about 280 km west of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. Travelling time to the Mara is approximately 45 minutes by air and scheduled flights depart daily from Wilson airport in Nairobi or, if you choose, you can charter an airplane to take you where you need to go.

The MMNR is named after the traditional inhabitants of the area, the Maasai. The terrain bordering the Serengeti to the south, is primarily open savannah that is periodically broken up by rocky outcrops, small valleys, stands of acacia trees and forests along the river banks.

There are 3 main rivers, Sand River (seasonal), the Talek and the Mara. The Talek and the Mara meet in the middle of the park and their confluence continues as the Mara River. The Mara River is most famous for its spectacular crossing-viewing sites, where wildebeest and zebra, risk their lives, to cross crocodile-infested waters on their never-ending journey to find new pastures. It is unlikely that you will view a crossing spectacle in privacy, since it is one of the primary reasons why visitors flock to the Maasai Mara during migration season. At the same time, larger mammals (elephant, hippo and, if you’re lucky, the elusive black rhino) as well as a variety of plains game species can also be seen.

MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE (MMNR)

The Mara is renowned for its big cats (lion, cheetah and leopard) and of course for ‘The Great Migration’, that involves mixed herds of more than 2 million wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle, making their way northwards from the Serengeti in their annual search for better grazing.

Game drives within the Mara are limited to daylight hours (6.30am –– 7pm). Due to the nature of the area, walking safaris are not permitted within the reserve. Hot air ballooning over the Mara is possible and pre-booking is advised.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

This exclusive 9-tent camp is pitched on the banks of the Talek River. 150 metres away – directly below the dining tent area, is an ancient wildebeest crossing point that offers spectacular views of the migration as it passes Rekero.

The guest tents are beautifully furnished, spacious and comfortable. Each tent has a view of the river from its own veranda as well as an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, a flush toilet and an original safari-style bucket shower.

The area around Rekero is home to extraordinary concentrations and a diversity of wildlife species. The resident big cats, the Marsh pride, are famous throughout the world and even have their own Facebook page.

Rekero’s guides are widely recognised to be among the best in East Africa. While, regularly winning International guiding awards they are also in high sought after by documentary film crews. Rekero is the base of choice for film crews such as the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and Disney’s African Cats.

There is little doubt that Rekero stands out as one of the Mara’s most iconic safari camps.
