Domestic cats are the cats that most of the people have. These kind of cats are commonly used as pets in our home. Compare to the big cats domestic cats. The domestic cat (Felis catus or Felis silvestris catus) is a small, usually furry, domesticated, and carnivorous mammal. It is often called the housecat when kept as an indoor pet, or simply the cat when there is no need to distinguish it from other felids and felines. Cats are often valued by humans for companionship and their ability to hunt vermin and household pests.

Domestic Cats

Page 3: Domestic cats and big cats

• This cat is from United States.

• The first wirehair cat appeared as a random cat mutation among a litter of six born to two barn cats.

• This single red and white male had odd wiry fur.

American Wirehair

Page 4: Domestic cats and big cats

• The breed originated in Lakewood, California as the result of a spontaneous mutation.

• In June, 1981, two stray kittens were found and taken in by the Ruga family

American Shorthair

• The breed is believed to be descended from English cats.

• (the forebears of today's British Shorthairs) brought to North America by early European settlers to protect valuable cargo from mice and rats.

• The Balinese was originally registered as a 'longhaired Siamese', and examples were known from the early 1920s.

• The occasional long-haired kittens in a Siamese litter were seen as an oddity, and sold as household pets rather than as show cats

Page 7: Domestic cats and big cats

Felis Catus

• The breed is rare even in its native Russia. A translated breed standard for this and other native breeds was published in the mid 1990s, but nothing has been heard since that time and its breed status is unclear.

American Bobtail

• According to legend, bobtails are the result of a crossbreeding between a domestic tabby cat and a bobcat.

• Yodie, a short-tailed brown tabby male, mated with a seal point Siamese colored (cat) female to create the Bobtail's original bloodline.

Big Cats

Page 48: Domestic cats and big cats

• The term big cat, while not a biological classification, is used informally to distinguish the larger felid species from smaller ones. One definition of "big cat" includes the four members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard. Members of this genus are the only cats able to roar. A more expansive definition of "big cat" also includes the cougar, cheetah, snow leopard, and clouded leopard.

Page 49: Domestic cats and big cats

Cheetah • Cheetahs are big cats,

a bit smaller than lions or tigers. Cheetahs have a yellow to pale brown coat covered with black spots. Their coloring helps them hide in bushes and grass.

• The spots become rings on the cheetah’s long tail.

• Each cheetah’s tail has a different pattern of rings. Scientists use the tails to tell cheetahs apart.

Page 50: Domestic cats and big cats

• Lions are big cats. Along with tigers, lions are the world’s biggest and strongest cats. There are two kinds of lions, African and Asian lions.

• Lions live on grassy plains, savannas, and dry woodlands in Africa and India. They do not like to live in jungles and thick

• Forest.

Page 51: Domestic cats and big cats

• The leopard is a large, spotted cat of Africa and Asia. It hunts alone and at night and often stores its food in trees, away from other hungry animals.

• Tigers are members of the cat family. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and house cats are also members of the cat family.

• Tigers are the largest cats, and the only cats with stripes. They live in large forests in southern and southeastern.
