Fresh food, friendly faces puts Friesen’s on top

YUSEONG JEONStaff Writer

Friesen’s Bakery and Soup Bar is the winner of the very first Best New Business award for Best of Mankato 2015.

Opening this past May, Friesen’s Bakery is a fam-ily bistro, known for serving baked goods, including cook-ies, breads, pastries, cakes, muffins, bars and candies, as well as soup. However, there is one more thing that makes this restaurant popular and special -- it is also a vegan/vegetarian restaurant.

On its Facebook page, Fri-esen’s has almost 4,000 likes and around 400 people who says they have they have visited the store.

The posts are also be-ing updated regularly on its Facebook page, mainly pro-moting its deals and today’s menu. One of Friesen’s most recent offers has been “Buy five fresh cookies and get one for free.”

For its menu, the shop serves fresh and nutritional-ly-balanced soups, like clam chowder with no bacon, Cre-ole fish and rice, aloo gobi or soups with chicken dump-lings, West African peanut stew, turkey and smoked sausage gumbo.

The regular favorites of the restaurant’s menu are tuna salad sandwiches, clam chowder and Creole fish and rice.

Zorba Rolls, a popular menu item, are made with an

egg chop dough with green onions, cheddar cheese and garlic. Friesen’s Bakery promotes the Zorba Rolls as something that goes great with their soups and ham-burger buns.

Many have said that Fri-esen’s muffins are very soft and fresh. It also often offers “buy any three fresh baked muffins and get one for free’ deal for ‘muffin manias.’”

Friesen’s has received praise on its Yelp page for its good service and fresh bakery items.

It is located at 515 N. Riverfront Drive, Mankato. It opens from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday through Saturday, and from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Contact Friesen’s Bakery and Soup

facebook.com/FriesensbakeryWhile known for their soups and sandwiches, Friesen’s also has great bak-ery items like cookies, muffins and cakes.

The Y’s goal is to provide a safe, clean and cheerful environment for children so families can gather at the Y and parents have time to work out without worry. Parents can view the Child Watch room from a special monitor in the Life Center.

For decades, YMCA has offered programs that help kids reach their potential, that help families and indi-viduals achieve better health outcomes, and that encour-age everyone to get involved and make their community a better place. YMCA aims to bring more services to more people in these key areas.

Assistance is also avail-able for those who meet income requirements.

The Runners Up: Coming in close for best

workout facilities were Planet Fitness leading the way, and

Fitness for $10 following right behind: both are very afford-able facilities.

Planet Fitness is open and staffed 24 hours Monday through Friday and until 8 p.m. on the weekends, mak-ing it easy and flexible to work out - despite what your schedule may be. It’s located right by Riverhills Mall. It’s

very affordable, offering unlimited access and fitness training for just 10 bucks a month and no commitment. For an additional $10, Planet Fitness unlimited offers include: tanning, Hydro-massages, haircuts, total body enhancements, guest privileges, and access to other Planet Fitness facilities

nationwide. Fitness for $10 is very

similar to Planet Fitness offerings, located right off of Madison Avenue - right next to Busters Bar & Grill. Unlike Planet Fitness, Fitness for $10 requires an annual commitment for 10 bucks a month which includes ac-cess to cardio and weight

equipment, a free fitness evaluation, and group fitness classes. On Wednesday’s, Hatha Yoga is offered for free. For $19 a month, a member additionally receives unlimit-ed tanning, Hydro-massages, free guests privileges, and fitness on Demand Virtual Classes.

Pagliai’s lunch a simple, sweet successPRATAKSHYA BHANDARIStaff Writer

Mankato has spoken, and voted for the best of every-thing for the annual Best of Mankato. Meanwhile, best lunch special is one that pro-vides comfort food and best value for the least price. The winner for the best lunch special is Pagliais pizza, run-ner ups are Jake’s pizza and Tavern of the Avenue.

Mankato’s oldest pizzeria, Pagliais, located in down-town Mankato, is a classic for its tasteful menu. It is a household name in Mankato, and still attracts alumni spread all over the country who come back for a slice of memory and to relieve their years at MSU. Established in 1969, it offers a wide variety of Italian menu items but pizza has always been the favorite here. The menu is

moderately priced, enough to be a favorite and stay that way for so many years.

As for current students, it provides the best lunch deal. The lunch special is simple and effective - a one topping pizza with a drink for $6.47 and two topping for $7.82. The offer is for dine-in only, but who wants to leave the comfort of an old hangout to venture out into the cold?

Jake’s pizza, another col-

lege favorite, not only offers the convenience of being close to MSU campus, but a moderately priced menu and great tasting food as well. It is the runner-up for best lunch special: A Poorboy and drink combo for $5.00; a small, one topping pizza and drink combo for $6.50; or a medium pizza and drink combo for $9.50. It also offers plenty of happy hour specials and coupons to attract stu-dents for a quick lunch trip or

an elaborate dinner.

In third place for best lunch special is Tavern on the Avenue, a favorite sports bar in town. It offers a wide variety of specials and places due to its popularity as a lunch hangout. Included are Mingle Mondays, with $6.95 wraps and roll-ups and discounted appetizers later in the afternoon.

Great items goingtowards a great cause

NICOLE SCHMIDTStaff Writer

Congratulations to MRCI Thrift Shop for being voted the best thrift store in Mankato! MRCI Thrift Shop offers a variety of new and slightly-used donated items at great rates, including clothing, houseware, holiday specials, books, jewelry, lin-ens, crafts and fabrics, and furniture. It also strives to “provide a clean, organized and attractive retail store where slightly used clothing and household goods can be recycled”, as stated as one of its top goals.

MRCI also offers great deals on top of already low prices, such as 50 percent off Tuesday’s and Thursday’s on selected items.

MRCI began as a small rummage sale in Mankato in

1964. A year later on June 15, the first shop was opened, where only 30 volunteers helped operate the new busi-ness. Today, more than 150 people volunteer regularly in tasks such as sorting, pric-ing, and selling items (yet they could always use more volunteers if interested!).

Not only does MRCI Thrift Shop let you buy great items at even better prices, it also makes it easy for someone to make donations. It offers car-side service, making it easy for donors to quickly stop by and offer his/her donations without even having to leave the car.

MRCI Thrift Shop operates under the main organization called MRCI WorkSource, or Mankato Rehabilitation Cen-ter Incorporated. MRCI is a private, non-profit organiza-tion that was established in

1953, right here in Mankato. It seeks to raise money for people with disabilities and aid in their rehabilita-tion. Money raised by MRCI Thrift Shop goes towards MRCI WorkSource. Its long-standing mission statement is “creating innovative and genuine opportunities for people with disabilities or disadvantages to support their community participa-tion.”

MRCI is located on Sioux Road, located just off of Madison Avenue, around Red Lobster, Plato’s Closet, and Shopko. Its exact address for the GPS users out there (there are probably a few) is 111 Sioux Road, Mankato, MN.

‘Buffet’ often comes to mind when stomachs are rumbling. Luckily, Mankato has a wide selection of buffets. Congratulations to Pizza Ranch for securing the top spot for best buffet in Mankato! Pizza Ranch’s “Buffet Your Way” will leave you full, yet wanting to come back again soon.

I guess if we are talk-ing about Pizza Ranch, we should probably mention the pizza! Pizza Ranch of-fers 18 different set options like the Chicken Broccoli Alfredo, the Tuscan Roma, the Prairie (veggie), and the all-meat Bronco. If one of the 18 pizzas doesn’t sound like the right combination of topping you would prefer, simply build your own pizza. Choose from thin, original, or skillet crust, original or zesty Alfredo sauce, and the abun-dance of fresh toppings.

Not only does Pizza Ranch

offer the surplus of food listed above, it also serves chicken, hot mashed pota-toes and gravy, vegetables, salads, and potato wedges. Even more, it serves chicken fries, hot wings, and let’s not forget the addicting Cactus Bread and dessert pizza (a personal favorite of mine) to finish the meal right. Another unique feature is the gluten-free options, where cooks pay special attention to making sure the pizza is prepared, made, and baked in separate areas from the regular pizzas. If you want your gluten-free pizza or other foods in the comfort of your own home, Pizza Ranch also delivers and carries out.

Pizza Ranch is relatively inexpensive as well. An adult lunch is $8.69, while the eve-ning and weekend is $10.09. The buffet includes all you can eat and a cup for your beverage of choice.

While the food is deli-cious, you may find that the atmosphere is even better.

Pizza Ranch is a great place to gather with family or bring the sports team after a game or tournament. It is sure to satisfy every member of the family, team, or friend group.

If you have a just little over ten dollars, head to 1551 Tullamore St., Mankato and enjoy eating at Pizza Ranch.

Asiana Buffet and Grill came in second place of the top buffets in Mankato. Asiana serves a variety of sushi and seafood, along with appetizers and desserts. You can find Asiana at 1010 Raintree Rd, Mankato.

In third place was Hy-Vee, located on 2010 Adams Street. From seafood, to Ital-ian, to the classic salad bar, Hy-Vee is yet another great buffet to stop at when you need to grab a bite to eat.

I know you’re feeling hungry now. So what are you waiting for? Try the top rated buffets in Mankato -- Pizza Ranch, Asiana, or Hy-Vee buffets -- and eat to your heart’s desire.

Most of us are familiar with the popular Mexican grill Chipotle. Not only does it have two convenient loca-tions in Mankato (one right next to campus), this is the third year in a row that the popular chain has taken the award for Best Chain Restau-rant.

Chipotle has a long his-tory, starting in 1993 when the first restaurant opened its doors to an excited public. The majority of Chipotle’s food is not premade, and in fact arrives at the store, uncooked, fresh, and whole. The skilled staff prepares the food with special cooking methods and techniques to help maintain the freshness and quality of the customer’s delicious meal. Chipotle’s founder, Chairman, and co-CEO, Steve Ells, speaks pub-licly about the importance of the freshness in the ingredi-ents he chooses for his res-taurants and how much that improves the overall taste of their food.

Chipotle chooses its ingredients very carefully. They choose to purchase their pork from farmers who raise their pigs outdoors or in

deeply bedded pens. These pigs are never given antibiot-ics, unlike most pigs raised for the same reason who are given an excess amount to keep the confinement-raised pigs from getting sick. An-other detail they make sure of is that the pigs are fed a vegetarian diet. It is for these reasons that Chipotle be-lieves the pigs they are pur-chasing have lived healthy and happy lives. Since 2001, these are the guidelines that Chipotle follows when pur-chasing pork from their pro-ducers. Chipotle also seeks beef producers that meet or exceed all of their natu-rally raised standards, dairy products from pasture-raised cows, and chickens who are raised without added growth hormones (as stated by U.S. law), without antibiotics, and without additional additives in food commonly used to encourage faster growth in chickens (such as arsenic). These high standards have left Chipotle with the deli-cious ingredients they use in your favorite taco, burrito, and so much more.

Boulder Tap House, com-ing in second, definitely has variety in their menu. From crunchy fried pickles

to chicken quesadillas and sun dried tomato artichoke dip, this restaurant is perfect for when you can’t decide between tacos and burgers. A relatively new addition to the Mankato scene, their leg-endary boneless wings and specialty burgers are enough to win this restaurant a place on the Best of Mankato’s list of best chain restaurants.

Buffalo Wild Wings, fol-lowing in third place, is known best for its wings, beer, and sports. B-Dubs, as it’s known, may be down to only one location in Mankato until the closed downtown location resituates in the near future, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less popular. Fans still flock to the St. Andrews Drive location, now more than ever. This fun atmosphere would not be complete without their mouthwatering sauces, one of a kind appetizers, and of course their beefy burgers. Salads, wraps, kids’ meals, and deserts confirm that this restaurant definitely has something for everyone. For a complete menu, visit their official site and look for the Mankato location.

The famed Tavern on the Avenue (Madison Ave., if you were wondering) has endeared itself to Mankato patrons for many things, but takes the gold in this poll for its excellent Happy Hour specials. Along with free popcorn, friendly staff, and a fantastic atmosphere, Tav on the Ave provides great deals for diners every night of the week. Weekday afternoon specials are avail-able 2-6 p.m. for customers who would like to relax with a glass of wine for $5, score a cold Coors for $3, or start off the night with $3 rails. Later in the evening, every evening, Tav offers $3 Coors and rails so you don’t have to spend all your cash to have a great time.

A staple for every visi-tor to Mankato’s bar scene, Rounders Sports Bar has been offering a fun and ca-sual atmosphere that brings in patrons every night of the week. Their weekday Happy Hour offers $2 domestic bottles, $1 off taps, $2 rail drinks and select appetiz-ers for $5, and a weekend deal from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. that offers 16oz bloody

marys, screwdrivers, and mimosas for $2.50. No matter when you arrive, there’s al-ways a great deal to be found at Rounders.

Blue Bricks, located in the heart of downtown, is an un-derstated gem popular with a down-to-earth crowd and anyone who is looking for a cozy bar with great drinks, billiards, and space to relax with friends. Every weekday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and all day on Monday you can

get domestic bottles for $1.75 and $0.50 off drinks. Come in Tuesdays for $2.50 bottles, Wednesdays for 7 to 11 p.m. two-for-ones, and Thursdays for $2.50 talls and $0.75 off taps. Weekends offer great Happy Hour deals from 3 to 7 p.m. on Fridays and 12 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Blue Bricks has created so many deals it’s difficult to list them all, so stop in anytime for a drink that’s a steal in one of Mankato’s best.

High-quality hair care at Liv Aveda Kato coffee hot spot returns to the topAMANDA HINDEStaff Writer

If the friendly faces man-ning the espresso machines at the Coffee Hag don’t make you happy every time you walk into the shop, the smell of recently ground coffee beans and sugar will. The array of coffee and teas will take you to caffeine seekers nirvana. Not only are all the tea and coffee drinks deli-cious and affordable but they are organic and fair trade. Which makes giving up a couple of bucks for a cup of coffee a little easier.

Called “the Hag” by regulars, the atmosphere of this Mankato-based shop is casual, open and homey. Almost like “Central Perk” from Friends, but more awe-some. Get ready to relax and have some great conversa-tions with those who you love. Not only is the coffee great, but the food is as well. The Hag’s kitchen offers vegetarian cuisine and vegan

food. Their food will make the most carnivorous person slam their empty “Hag Tie Pasta” bowl on the table and holler for more!

A local theme seems to permeate even the brick walls. Not only is there local artwork from area artists showcased monthly, but even live music from local bands is featured at the Hag on Fridays and Saturdays.

This is the second time The Coffee Hag has taken first place in the Best of Mankato, though it has al-ways placed in the top two.

Having a ferociously faithful following, when you walk into the shop you will immediately understand their love for the place. Estab-lished in 1992, The Hag has been a hot spot for locals to go for a quick cup of cof-fee or a pleasant meeting with friends for more than 20 years. Whether you are studying or just surfing the Internet the Coffee Hag is the way to go.

Known for their fun, energetic workers and happy atmosphere, Caribou Coffee took the second place spot for this category. A Minneso-ta-based company, Caribou’s fun, woodsy motif welcomes coffee addicts towards their loving caffeine god like a cozy snowdrift cabin to a mountain man. But do not be fooled, they are serious about their coffee. As their slogan says, “Life is short. Stay awake for it” and they mean it.

If the previous two coffee shops weren’t tempting for you maybe Tandem Bagels will be more your cup of cof-fee. Not only are their bagels homemade, but all of their baked goods are too. If you are even a little bit hungrier than just a cup of coffee can satisfy, look no further! There are a handful of different kinds of sandwiches to tempt anyone. Their roast beef is even roasted in the shop!

Not only are they very conscientious of their coffee

The second runner-up for thrift shops was Goodwill. Goodwill is also a non-profit organization that offers job training, employment place-ment services, and other programs for people who have disabilities. Goodwill is located at 2024 Adams Street, Mankato, MN.

In third is Plato’s Closet. Plato’s Closet primarily targets people in their teens and twenties, offering name brands and styles, along with buying used clothes for cash on the spot. You can find Plato’s Closet on 1878 Madi-son Avenue, Mankato, MN, next to MRCI.

Congratulations to MRCI, Goodwill, and Plato’s Closet for being voted as the top three thrift shops in the Mankato area for continu-ally offering quality used items and working for a good cause.

to’s downtown strip, Blue Bricks is a bar that offers a mellowed out scene without sacrificing a great social at-mosphere. The cozy couches are the first seats to go, but seating at the bar, high tops and booths means that there’s always somewhere to relax with a drink from the main or cash only bar in the back. Music, billiards, and a patio out front all make Blue Bricks a great downtown destination.

On Madison Avenue, Tavern on the Avenue is an upscale bar that offers big drinks and bigger smiles. Whether you’re enjoying one of the signature dishes from the Tav’s kitchen or watching the game after work, people know to hit up Tav if you’re looking for a local favorite with a great staff.

Pub 500 has made a name in Mankato as a relaxed bar

that is packed to the raf-ters with character, music, and great beer. Boasting an impressive list of frothy libations that has come to be known as the “Beer Cruise,” Pub has become a beer-lover’s paradise (you can check out a complete list at pub500.com/beermenu.pdf). For some, Pub’s long beer list, engaging menu and rustic atmosphere is enough, but that’s not all it has to offer. A cozy stage area has become a haven for musical talent, welcoming events that range from Halloween par-ties to Minneapolis jazz act Davina and the Vagabonds, who packed the house last semester for her sassy and rip-roaring show. Pub 500 walks the line between a quiet and relaxing pub and an entertainment destination that keeps bar hoppers com-ing back for more.

As a resident of Mankato for almost 10 years, I can’t claim to know everything there is to know about this fine river valley town. Mankato and North Mankato have gone through numerous changes over the years, from urban renew-al to recent expansion. Towns change just about as much as they stay the same. However, it’s the memories one makes in these towns that are everlasting.

I want to congratulate and thank each and every nominee in this year’s Best of Mankato. Whether you know it or not, you are the memory makers. It’s thanks in part to you that alumni return years later to reminisce about the great times they had here and locals make you part of their everyday lives. See, whether you’re staying in Mankato for a day, several months, four years, a decade or a lifetime, it’s the people and, in this case, places you will re-member long after life has taken you off to whatever is in store.

Like I said, I may not know everything about Mankato (despite descending from a family that helped found it) but what I do know is that I will always remember meeting up with fellow musicians after a concert to grab wings and beer at BWW, laughing ‘til it hurt with friends at Perkins one July at 3 a.m., navigating the chaos of downtown during graduation weekend, picking your favorite eatery to go to on your birthday, enjoying some local music tal-ent at Pub 500 and The Coffee Hag, and stopping in to grab a pizza at any number of great places after a late night at work.

On behalf of anyone who may have similarly fond memories tied to this place, or just fond memories period, thank you again. Thank you for helping to make Mankato what it is, what is has been and what it will ultimately be.

“Come to Pappa” for exquisitely prepared meals and local flavor

LOREIN MEGILLStaff Writer

Jay Pappas, owner of Pap-pageorge, has the distinction of being a fourth generation restaurateur. With more than half a century of restaurant experience to his family’s name, that distinction has paid off for Pappageorge, which has dramatically risen through the ranks and taken the title of Mankato’s Best Local Restaurant this year. Originally opened in

2007, Pappageorge’s menu features substantial steaks and seafood in addition to sandwiches and salads for a lighter meal. Any of those items coupled with one of the many wine or beer op-tions is sure to be a winner. Pappageorge also offers suc-culent specials such as the $5 burger and fries on Mon-days after 4 p.m. The variety of handmade desserts adds a potential fun surprise to each visit to this family favorite.

“Come to Pappa” for exquisitely prepared meals and local flavor

Tav on the Ave has a solid and delicious menu of the food traditionally associated with a sports bar or tavern. It’s worth a trip to Tav for the Famous Super Fries alone, and once there you’ll dis-cover that the menu con-tains much more than just these decadent fries. From a variety of different burgers to massive gourmet salads, and from beer and wine to sweet cocktails like the “Lizard Lotion,” “Bulldog Margarita,” and “Rubber Ducky ‘You’re the One’” this menu is sure to have something for everyone. The atmosphere is cheerful and inviting, full of laughing groups and friendly waitstaff. With plenty of TVs and lots of tables this is an excellent place to catch whatever the big game may be or just to enjoy a meal

with friends or family.

Number 4 seeks to pull together the four elements, or in this case, tastes from all four cardinal directions, and ingredients from each of the four seasons in their food. The menu features pub favor-ites such as traditional burg-ers and fish and chips, but also branches away from the food some would associate with pub fare with entrees such as Prime Beef Filet and Lobster Bisque. In addition to the variety of food, Num-ber 4 also hosts “Bubbles & Brushes” painting nights, a chance for anyone to try their hand at painting under the tutelage of an experienced leader. Number 4 offers the opportunity for a fun, upscale eating experience here in Mankato.

Local treasure serves up breakfast perfection for fourth consecutive time

CHELSEY DIVELY A & E Editor

The Wagon Wheel Café once again takes center stage at the best place to grab breakfast in Mankato, four years in a row. It’s your home cooked meal away from home. Wagon Wheel complete with a comfortable, old-style layout and tunes on their retro jukebox for you to jam out to. The pancakes are perfectly fluffed and the eggs are simmered to perfection, all at an insanely affordable price. A casual, welcoming experience awaits for any set of taste buds. The prices leave your wallet breathing a steady sigh of relief. Wagon Wheel is located on 609 S Front St and is open from 6 a.m.- 4 p.m.

For a quaint and bustling experience close to campus, Weggy’s is your one stop

shop. It’s a great spot for a breakfast with your family, or nursing an active stom-ach early in the morning. It has perfected the art of Belgian Waffles, and “hang over specials” like $3 Bloody Mary’s. They offer various specials every week to keep your taste buds demanding for more. It’s no wonder why Weggy’s has returned to our top three this year, as it’s quick to claim the hearts of many locals with its home-town dining feel. Weggy’s is located in University Square and is open from 6 a.m.- 11 p.m.

Coming in at third place for the second year in a row, Perkins takes the cake, or rather pancake. Perkins pro-vides breakfast at any time of the day or night, if you’re hankering for a breakfast at 3 a.m. (depending on location). A national chain, Perkins

has the advantage of hav-ing a variety of great, hearty meals, from their array of awesome omelets, griddle greats, and cracked clas-

sics to their country sausage biscuit and gravy platters. Mankato has two Perkins locations, one on Madison Avenue, which closes at

midnight, and one in North Mankato on Highway 169, which is open 24/7.

Number 4 offers a variety of foods which draw influ-ence from around the world and form the four seasons, hence the name. It thrives on a cozy atmosphere with warm lighting to create a unique experience. It offers unique sides like truffle fries, a true delicacy, small plates, entrees, soups, sandwiches, burgers, and distinct beers on tap. Some notable small plates include DL lipsmack-ers, which are truffle tater-tots with Parmesan cheese and Eliot Ness beer cheese sauce sprinkled on top. Some notable soups and salads include the Lobster Bisque

and the coconut chicken salad. There is a great selec-tion of diverse entrees with everyone from roasted duck to barramundi. The also offer one-of-a-kind burgers like the Compton or the Full Monty. Some notable sandwiches include the kg2014 and The Big Easy. It’s a very ambi-tious restaurant with reason-able prices that defy your traditional restaurant meals. While it didn’t make last years top three, it made great strides this past year to win over the people of Mankato. Tav on the Ave contin-ues to dominate as best bar food for two years in a row, while it makes the top three in several other lists, like Best Local Restaurant, Best Restaurant, and Best Happy Hour. Tav on the Ave has ev-erything you need for a good experience out on the town complete with unique burg-ers, fries, wings, sandwiches, and rolls. It’s got a great social atmosphere where you can mix and match different sides. If you’re looking for a lively time with bar food classics, you needn’t look any further.

For those seeking a more sporty experience and smoky flavors, Rounders is the place to be. This year, Round-ers rises from third place into second in the category of Best Bar Food, and with good reason.

The grilled burgers are grilled to perfection with your choice of seasoned ket-

tle chips or seasoned waffle fries. They even offer a Black Bean Veggie Burger for any vegetarians. If you’re look-ing for something zesty and unique, you can’t go wrong with the Hot and Spicy, which is topped with jalape-nos, bacon, Chipotle Tabas-co, Pepper Jack cheese, and hot buffalo sauce.

It also offers your tradi-tional appetizers like moz-zarella sticks, sliders, and onion rings, and wings with eleven flavors to choose from.

There’s also non-traditional appetizers for those looking to experiment like reuben balls which are bite-sized balls filled with Swiss, corned beef, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing on the side, and ham and pickle bites. The pickle bites con-tain cream cheese, pickles, and ham wrapped in bread-crumbs.

This year Boulder Tap House graces the top three by being known for it’s ex-cellent beer, space to venture in comfortably without being cramped, and of course it’s extensive bar food menu complete with wings, home-made French fries, tap house burgers, malts, and tacos. There’s something here for everyone at a price that rests well with your wallet. Out of the legendary wings, the Bourbon Peach BBQ is to die for. You can also build your own custom burger, and choose from 11 different sides.

Try it “Mike’s Way” -- Jersey Mike’s tops sub shops

JENNA VAGLEStaff Writer

If you’re looking for a slice of the Jersey Shore, head on over to Jersey Mike’s sub shop at one of their two Mankato locations. Their gourmet sub sandwiches are sure to curve your appetite piled high with freshly sliced meat and fluffy bread baked in house daily. Then, get it topped “Mike’s Way” which is a combination of onions, lettuce, tomatoes, juices and spices. The blend of juices and spices are what makes them a sub above the rest! Try one of their Club’s, the

#8 or #9, garnished with mayo and bacon. If you’re feeling a hot sub, get the #43, the Chipotle Chees-esteak. Their new Chicken Cheesesteaks are featured this month. The Chicken Bacon Ranch and California Chicken Cheesesteak melt in your mouth with veggies, chicken and cheese. Go to their downtown location on Riverfront Drive, or uptown on Adams Street to try one of these fantastic subs today!

Jimmy John’s has a wide variety of options for any sub lover. Whether you’re out and about or hibernat-ing from the bitter cold, Jimmy Johns’ staff will get you what you need in a jiffy. Their menu includes Plain Slims with just meat and cheese, 8” Club Sandwiches topped with meat, cheese and veggies, and their Giant Club Sandwiches with extra meat, cheese, veggies and signature items like avocado.

Mankato has two locations, one by campus and one located on Victory Drive.

Soup and a sandwich go together like peanut butter and jelly, which is an item on the Erbert and Gerberts menu! Their soup menu includes classics like Chicken Noodle and Chili, and spe-cialties like Wisconsin Beer Cheese and Cheesy Enchi-lada. Pair it with a signature sub and dunk away!

El Mazatlán is a reigning champion in the Mankato Mexican scene, with four first place wins for Best Mexican food. Located at 1525 Tullamore St., Mazatlan has over 20 appetizers to sat-isfy the lightest of appetites. Some of those appetizers are nacho dishes, usually with gooey Monterey Jack cheese and a meat on top, rang-ing from Mexican chorizo, to steak, to chicken. When drinks have been ordered you get complimentary chips and salsa, as is traditional with many authentic Mexican restaurants. The dinner menu is enormous compared to the lunch menu, available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Mon-day through Saturday; the dinner menu is available at any time. The dinner menu has every Mexican dish imaginable. The meat avail-

able ranges from seafood, to chicken, pork and finally steak. The overall atmo-sphere is perfectly authentic Mexican, from showcas-ing ESPN Deportes on their television screens to having pure, authentic Mexican music. While you’re there, make sure to enjoy the “best margarita in town.” Come early for the hospitality, stay late for the atmosphere. While you’re around town, keep an eye out for their new food truck as well!

La Terraza, located at 1404 Madison Avenue near the Madison East Center, also serves authentic Mexican food. A converted Burger King restaurant, the food can be described as a little bit more expensive compared to El Mazatlán. Appetiz-ers range from simple beefy nachos, to tortilla soup. The most unique appetizer on Terraza’s menu is a Pico

de Gallo salad, with either grilled chicken or shrimp on skewers on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, Pico de Gallo and avocado slices. For when Minnesota tones itself down, prepare to enjoy La Terraza’s Mexican cuisine on their out-door patio.

Chipotle Mexican Grill has two places in the Mankato area, one located near the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus in the University Square area off of Warren Street, and at 1851 Madison Avenue, next door to a Verizon Wireless store. Chipotle proudly uses fresh, homegrown ingredients in their famous burritos and burrito bowls, imbuing their meals with authentic flavor and merging quality cuisine with fast food expediency.

B-Dubs’ wings soarNICOLE SCHMIDTStaff Writer

Whether it’s game day or a just night out, wings are a classic go-to for a deli-cious, relatively inexpensive meal. If you are looking for the perfect spot, we have just the recommendations for you. Congratulations to Buffalo Wild Wings for being voted the best wing joint in Mankato!

Buffalo Wild Wings is well-deserving of the title of top wing joint. BWW has a variety of options for wings. The first choice made after your choice of beverage is between traditional wings or boneless (made with all white meat chicken) along

with the desired number of wings. Then follows the epic 21 options for sauces. Even the pickiest eater may find the perfect sauce, with the range of the Sweet Salt and Vinegar Seasoning, to Spicy Garlic, to the sauce imported from the flames of hell: Blazin’. You are sure to find a sauce that will soon become your favorite, as well as have many options when you feel like mixing it up.

Not only are the wings ex-cellent, BWW also has other food options that are appe-tizing. Other dining options include flatbreads like the Spinach Artichoke Chicken Flatbread, onion rings, and cheese burger Slammers. BWW also has salads, wraps,

King of college housing complexes

LUKE LARSONStaff Writer

This year’s Best of Mankato Best Apartment award goes to College Town. College Town offers a unique housing experience. On its website, it prides itself as being “Mankato’s first gated community for adults.” It offers students plenty of amenities including a pool, an exercise room, a volley-ball court, a game room, and bus service, to name a few. The College Town website says that “if you can’t have any fun here, you’re prob-ably dead.” The complex is designed like a neighborhood with individual cottages available for leasing. Cot-tages are outfitted with free internet, kitchen appliances, and a washer/dryer. There are seven cottage styles to choose from, each with “contemporary design [and]

traditional small town flavor.” “I would say the big-

gest advantage is that you rent your own house, not an apartment,” says Landon Smith, the College Town leasing director. “They are free-standing independent units.”

Smith cites the spacious-ness of the units as a key advantage over other hous-ing options near campus. All units are multi-level and the bedrooms, up to 180 square feet in size, each come with a full bathroom. College Town is located off of Pohl Road to the southeast of campus. Monthly rent ranges from $450-$535 a bed.

Second place goes to University Square. University Square is located off of War-ren St. right next to campus. It is conveniently located next to restaurants like Chi-potle, Leeann Chin, Pieology,

and Insomnia Cookies, as well as the Carmike Stadium Cinema. Its website boasts that it is the “nicest, closest to campus, and competitively priced.”

Coming in third place are the Sibley Park Apartments, a relatively new addition to the Mankato. They are situ-ated next to the river off of Sibley Parkway. Its website cites its location as a key benefit. It is close to down-town, Sibley Park, and a bike trail and offers a scenic view of the river. Monthly rent prices range from $540 for a one-bedroom unit to $940 for a three-bedroom. Amenities include an exercise room, laundry facilities, and an underground parking garage. Kitchen appliances are also included.

It also offers various seafood options like fish and chips, walleye, and jumbo shrimp. Each of the desserts are handmade and vary depending on the season. The restaurant even features craft beers from the Kato Brewery on tap. The part that really stands out for the menu are the starters, like the Fresh Fried Cauliflower, which comes with served with a unique cheese sauce made from scratch. For a special affordable treat, on Monday’s after 4 p.m. a burger and fries only costs $5.00. Pap-pageorge is open Mon-day’s from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., and Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
