Stockbridge, Massachusetts-- The Berkshire Botanical Garden will kick off its 75th anniversary year on Saturday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m. with world-renowned plant explorer, horticulturist, and author, Dan Hinkley, speaking at the 2009 annual winter lecture at Monument Mountain High School in Great Barrington, Ma. A special reception and book sale will follow the lecture. Cost is $30 for Garden members and $35 non-members.

Mr. Hinkley will present “Plants for your 21st Century Garden.” In this intriguing lec-ture, Hinkley will talk about new plants that have been recently introduced, discovered or bred. “The abundant world of plants in which I have invested through-out my life, has paid handsome dividends,” says Hinkley. “I have had the opportunity to be a continuous student in a subject that has no parameters, limit-less mysteries and extraordinary allure.” He will offer the audi-ence his thoughts about the many plants that do not pose a threat to bio-invasion and rec-ommend plants that extend the gardening season, no matter the climate. ”Using the right plants in our gardens in regard to proper cultural requirements should be the universal goal. A plant well grown, on its own, is justification enough for gardening.”

ROCK ON is proud to present a week long course in song writing and contemporary music theory the week of February 16th through the 20th at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsfield. The course will be taught by two of the most talented musicians in the area, Jeff Link, Professional Bassist, song-writer, and former Assistant Professor at Berkley College of Music and Jay Fruet performing Guitarist and coordinator of ROCK ON. The 5 day course will cover the basics of rock and Jazz music theory and original songwriting. Each student will have their song’s performed and recorded with Jeff and Jay. Pittsfield – The City of Pittsfield announced that applications are now available for funding to provide human services to benefit Pittsfield residents. Funding is for the program year July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Annually, the City undertakes a process through the Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC), an 11 member volunteer committee which reviews the proposals and submits its recommendations to the Mayor. Last years recommendations resulted in 36 human service programs receiving a total of $450,000 from the City’s general fund and from the federal Community Development Block Grant Program. The consumers assisted with those funds ranged from infants to the elderly. In addition to submitting a written proposal, applicants will

be invited to come before the HSAC to make a presentation in April. HSAC Chairman Christopher Meehan said, “Again we’re look-ing forward to televising the presentations on Pittsfield Community Television. It provides an excellent opportunity for the pub-lic to learn more about the great work that agencies are doing in Pittsfield, and it also allows the citizens to see a part of our process.” Applications can be obtained at the Pittsfield Dept. of Community Development at Pittsfield City Hall. Valentines Day at Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum will be a family affair on Saturday, February 14th with a variety of activi-ties and events offered throughout the day. The fun begins at 1:00pm when all are invited for free to the mansion’s Great Lawn to enjoy a roar-ing bonfire with free hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows.

Those choosing to move indoors will enjoy a 3:00 pm children’s production of “The Musical Hat” followed by a Victorian Tea for a combined ticket price. An original work of Nutshell Playhouse - writ-ten and directed by Don Jordan – the show features Shmurple and her fellow clowns singing songs from their Musical Hat, when suddenly they discover their music has been stolen. Join them as they try to get

it back, and in the process discover what music is made of. Share their adventures as they follow the Snoof, meet the Ductionary and dance with a clown. Live actors, puppets, mime, music and more - recom-mended for ages 3 to 9.

Don Jordan has performed as a mime and clown throughout Europe and the U.S., has appeared on Broadway with Mummenschanz, and served as Artistic Director of San Francisco’s Pickle Family Circus. He has taught at the Juilliard School, The Instituto De Teatro in Barcelona, Teatro Studio in Rome, Ohio University, Shakespeare and Company and currently teaches at Smith College.

GREAT BARRINGTON, MA. The choir will present a concert in collaboration with the Berkshire South Regional Community Center at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14. It will feature selections from the Magic Tree House: The Musical, based on the popular series of children’s books by Mary Pope Osborne. By special permission from Ms. Pope, the Choir has obtained the rights to perform music from the show, which is currently on a national tour. This will be a premiere performance in Berkshire County. Also on the program is the fairy tale Musicians of Bremen arranged for a cappella choir, and the Never-Ending Song, a Young Person’s Guide to the Choir. Joining the group will be a children’s choir from the Montessori School of the Berkshires.

The Cantilena Chamber Choir is under the artistic direction of Andrea Goodman who is also the Director of the Northern Berkshire Chorale in Williamstown and the Saratoga Choral Festival, an annual summer concert series for chorus and orchestra in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Williams College Department of Music presents MIDWEEKMUSIC

The Pittsfield Department of Community Development is sponsor-ing two Public Input Sessions this year as part of preparing its 2010 Consolidated Annual Action Plan. The purpose of the Public Input Sessions is to obtain public comments and suggestions on how the City’s federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds should be used to improve the quality of life in our community. In-formation gathered from these public input sessions will be used during the preparation of the City’s Consolidated Annual Action Plan. The first public input session will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at Conte Community School, Community Room, located at 200 West Union Street, Pittsfield, MA. The second public input session will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at Morningside Community School, Community Room, located at 100 Burbank Street, Pittsfield, MA. Both public input sessions will be held at the end of the regularly scheduled West Side and Morningside Neighborhood Initiative Steering Committee meetings. The public is also encouraged to attend the Neighborhood Initiative Steering Committee meetings that will be held at 6:30 p.m. prior to each of the public input sessions. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that the City prepare a Consolidated Annual Action Plan each

year. Funded projects included in the Annual Action Plan are required to benefit low and moderate-income people or eliminate slums and blight. Everyone who attends this public input session will be given the oppor-tunity to speak on what community issues are important to them, such as: housing; public facilities; job opportunities; crime; drug and alcohol abuse; childcare; domestic violence; handicapped services; and elderly services. The Consolidated Annual Action Plan will be available in draft form in mid April for the public to review and comment. It will also undergo a formal adoption process, including a formal public hear-ing that will be publicly advertised. The plan will be completed and approved by the middle of May and is due at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) shortly thereafter.
