Majolica Frogs
Q: I recently inherit-ed a set of Majol-ica figurines. Although they are rather hideous, I suspect they might be valuable. Accord-ing to the documents I have, they were made by Jerome Massier and are his Singing Frogs. Betty, Westminster, Colo.
A: You are going to croak with joy when I tell you that your figu-rines are valued at $1,200 in Warmans Majolica Identi-fication and Price Guide by Mark F. Moran. According to Moran, the Massier fam-ily began producing ceram-ics in Vallauris, France, dur-ing the mid-18th century.
***
Q: I have a painting by Emmanuel P. Matthews entitled Picnic on the Pond. I was told several years ago by a rep-resentative of a major auc-tion house that it could be worth as much as $10,000, but I would have to bring it to New York for a real appraisal. What is your advice? Samantha, Streator, Ill.
A: If you plan to sell your painting, the first thing you need to do is get an appraisal by a certi-fied expert. This expert isnt a neighbor or some-one who claims to know a little about artwork. To find an appraiser, I suggest you contact one of the associa-tions, namely The Ameri-can Society of Appraisers, P.O. Box 17265, Washing-ton, DC 20005; The Inter-
national Society of Apprais-ers, 1131 SW 7th St., Suite 105, Renton, WA 98055; or The Appraisers Association of America, 386 Park Ave. South, No. 2000, New York, NY 10016.
Experts generally provide two types of appraisals, verbal and written. Written appraisals are especially recommended for insurance purposes. After you have gotten an appraisal, then the time has come to contact some of the larger auction houses. The main thing is to do your homework and rely on experts who are com-petent and knowledgeable about artwork.

Q: I have a creamer and sugar set that I believe is at least 100 years old. I am enclosing pictures of the set, which is marked Germany. Can you help me find out more about it? Sue, Montevideo, Minn.
A: Judging by the pic-tures you sent, I believe your set was made during the 1920s. Similar sets in my area sell in the $25 to $45 range, depend-ing, of course, on condition.

Vetting a Pet-Sitter
DEAR PAWS COR-NER: I recently got a new job, and I need to have someone come and feed my cats and walk the dog because I dont get home until late at night. How can I find a pet sitter I can trust? Missing My Pets Already
DEAR MISSING: Dog-Vacay.com, a pet board-ing service, recently put out a list of five things you should do when considering a potential pet sitter. Hope-fully these will help in your search:
Interview the pet sitter, and have your pet interview him or her as well. See how the sitter and pets interact.
Ask for references at the very least. While pet sitters arent required to be licensed or insured, they should have references you can contact typically other clients. Some pet sitters will have a certification through a pro-fessional organization like Pet Sitters International, meaning they have taken additional pet-sitting and business courses offered by
that organization. Ask basic but important
questions. Nothings too trivial for your pets. What time will the sitter come? Where will your dog be walked? Whats a typical visit like?
Give the sitter as much info as possible about your pets. Once youve decided to take on a sitter, make sure he or she knows your pets particular habits, favorite foods, specific medications and when to take them, etc.
Monitor your pets. When you get home, how do your pets react to you? Do you notice behavioral changes? Are they handling your absence well? Pets might not take to a new sched-ule right away, but if they dont adjust, you may need to consider a new sitter or a different pet-care option.
Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. Did you know mosquitoes can trans-mit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas dont? Find out more in my new book Fighting Fleas, avail-able now on Amazon.

LARGEST GLACIERSBY CONTINENT
North America Hubbard Glacier
Hubbard is the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent. Hubbard has also been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska ever since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895 (Davidson, 1903). And, this is happening despite climate change and the fact that many glaciers are thinning and retreating.
South America Perito Moreno Glacier
90% of the worlds glaciers in Antarctica and Patagonia at the southern tip of South America are melting quickly. Argentinas mighty Perito Moreno glacier is thriving in defiance of the global climate change. University of Alaska Fairbanks experts say the areas heavy precipitation seems to have increased. This combined with strong, cold Patagonian winds has reinforced the glacier.
Europe Vatnajokull Glacier
The Vatnajokull covers about 8% of Iceland with and average thickness of 400meter. Beneath the glacier are active volcanoes. Grimsvoth Volcano is Icelands most active latest eruptions in 1996, 1998, 2004.
Africa Glaciers of Kilimanjaro
These glaciers may not be the biggest on the continent but they are definitely on the highest mountain of the continent. They were also the center of much global warming alarmist hype until it was proven that retreat and advance of glaciers is not caused by climate change as much as it is caused by overall changes in precipitation.
Asia Siachen Glacier
Siachen glacier is the highest battleground on earth. It is a place where India and Pakistan always meet in a frozen standoff. It is the worlds largest non polar glacier, Siachen glacier is sometimes called third pole. This glacier is well known for its scarce population and treacherous climatic conditions. Siachin boasts more than 2 trillion cubic feet of ice, and within 25 kms has 45 peaks which rise up to a height of 18000 feet.
Australia Heard Island Glacier
Australias little know glaciers sit in sub-Antarctic Heard Island in the Indian Ocean. The area was discovered by U.S. Captain William Heard in 1853. Scientists call the area an ideal laboratory for studying climate change at the end of the Polar Zone and isolated from humans.
Antarctica Lambert Glacier
Lambert along with Mellor and Fisher glaciers, which form the upper extension of the Lambert, the ice mass have been measured at 320 mi. long and over 40 mi. wide. The Lambert drains into the massive Amery Ice Shelf at longitude 70 deg. E, almost due south of Bombay and approximately 1,400 mi. from the South Pole.

Wood Deck Stain vs. Water Seal
Q: The house I just bought has a wood-en deck in the back that has turned gray over the years. Its otherwise struc-turally sound. My question is, should I seal the deck against further water dam-age, or just stain it to the color I want and not worry about sealing it? Judy H., Waycross, Ga.
A: Its really up to you. Just staining the deck will give you the color you want, although in high-traf-fic areas the stain could wear away quickly. Many deck companies recommend using a combination stain/sealer product, which is basically a sealer with pigment added. The advantage of this, they say, is the sealer provides additional protection against water and weather damage, while the stain helps reduce fading from UV rays.
Sealers should last at least a year, with some lasting up to three years. You have a choice of either water-based or oil-based sealer; many professionals recommend oil-based products, which last longer.
Since youve just pur-chased the house and might not know when the deck was last maintained, consider having a professional deck contractor inspect it. Find out if there are any hidden issues, whether the deck needs maintenance prior to staining or sealing it. The deck will likely need to be cleaned and may need to be sanded and pressure-washed prior to sealing or staining.
Once youve inspected and cleaned the deck, you can apply a stain or sealer (or both). If you decide to stain,
pick a few sample colors that are a few shades darker or lighter than the shade you want. This is because different types or different conditions of deck wood can cause the color of the stain to appear different from the swatch color. Test each sample in an inconspicuous place and pick the best color for your wood.
Apply the stain or sealer on a dry day when the tempera-ture is above 50 degrees F. Dont apply it in direct sun-light. Ideally, two dry days will help the stain or sealer dry completely and evenly, so check the weather fore-cast and plan accordingly.
Stir the sealer (dont shake it bubbles will form in it) or stain and apply a thin coat to a couple of boards at a time using a long-handled paint roller. Dont overapply the finish will not dry cor-rectly and will feel tacky for days, at least.
If the finish puddles up, use another roller or a broom to spread out the puddles. To stain or seal corners, use a paintbrush. If you feel a sec-ond coat is needed, apply it in the same way, very thinly. Let the finish dry for at least 24 hours.
A note about cleanup: Any rags or cloths used to clean up spills or excess should not be piled up together. The evaporating finish can ignite and cause a fire. Wash rags by hand if you applied a water-based finish, use soapy water; if you applied an oil-based finish, use min-eral spirits or paint thinner, then rinse and hang them outdoors to dry, spaced well apart.

VA Home Loans Are Great Deal
One of the biggest benefits veterans have is the home loan guaranty program. The Department of Veter-ans Affairs website (www.benefits.va.gov) has full details, but here are a few things you need to know if youre considering using it.
Benefits: You usually wont need a down pay-ment, the closing costs are limited and can be paid by the seller, you can pay off the loan early without pen-alty, and you wont be stuck paying private mortgage insurance. The VA doesnt loan you the money, but it stands behind a loan you get from another source. The loan guaranty is insurance to the lender, which can be helpful if youve been turned down by traditional sources.
Eligibility: You must have decent credit, sufficient income and a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). The home must be for you to live in. To obtain a COE, you need to have been dis-charged under other than dishonorable conditions. To apply for the COE, youll need VA Form 26-1880. See
the VA website for a chart showing the qualifying war-time and peacetime periods, the qualifying active dates and the minimum number of service days required.
What You Can Do: Buy a home, build a home, buy and improve a home, install energy-related improve-ments, buy a manufactured home and/or lot to put it on.
Other Types of Loans: Cash-Out Refinance, which allows you to take the equity from your home for paying off debts, financing school or making improvements to your home; and Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL), which is a refinance program for your existing VA loan. Addition-ally, there are housing grants to help disabled veterans buy or modify a home.
If you dont have a com-puter, call the VA for more information about the home loan guaranty program at 1-800-827-1000.

Storage Tips for Organizing and Clearing Your Homes Clutter
(NewsUSA) - Regardless of how big or small a home may be, many of us are faced with too much clutter and too little storage space. A lack of organization can make even the largest space seem small.
With some innovation and a little effort, you can save or even create storage space in any home. Keep these tips in mind the next time that youre getting organized and in need of all the storage space you can get:
* Dont get boxed in. Too often, people use space-eating boxes to store their linens, clothing or holiday decorations. For a less bulky storage option, use large, sealable plastic bags. Their flexibility makes them easy to fit into tight spaces where rigid boxes may not fit, such as under the bed or inside smaller cabinets. And because the bags are clear, you can see the contents inside, making it much easier to find a specific item that is stored away.
* Find new uses for common things. Think outside an items intended purpose. Egg cartons, for instance, can make excellent drawer organizers. Shoe organizers that hang over doors can be placed in bathrooms and used to store shampoo, soap or other bathroom products. This will clear up valuable cabinet space.
* Buy multipurpose furniture. For instance, instead of a regular ottoman, buy one that has a hollow interior for storing magazines or other items.
You could also buy a storage trunk, drape a cloth over it and use it as a coffee table. Whatever the case, if you have to buy new pieces of furniture, make sure that they double as storage units.
* Decorate with storage in mind. Many homes feature flat surface space on top of kitchen cabinets, and you can fill this space with items that double as both decorations and storage containers.
For example, baskets can add a charming touch to your kitchen, while providing a place to store extra dishes. Decorative pots can hold kitchen gadgets.
* Stop toying around with messiness. In a house with children, scattered toys are often the most prevailing items of clutter.
Consider moving your childrens toys into rotation, bringing out a few toys at a time and storing the rest away.

Baby robins eat 14 feet of earthworms every day!
Scientific definitions classify green peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes fruit - they develop from the plants flower, and contain seeds. But the Supreme Court decided differently: In the 1893 case of Nix vs. Hedden, the Court categorized tomatoes as vegetables, making them subject to the vegetable tariff. The defense for this was that tomatoes must be vegetables, since theyre typically served with dinner, instead of dessert.

CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs) need a little more energy when they are first turned on, but once the electricity starts moving, use about 60-75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. They also last about 10 times longer. Just changing one CFL - replacing a 60-watt bulb - cuts carbon dioxide pollution from coal produced electricity (We get 49% of our electricity from coal!). The pollution equivalent of one million cars would disappear! To get the most out of your CFLs, visit: www.energystar.gov
