FIRST PERFECT GAME IN

Lee Richmond of the Worcester Ruby Legs threw a perfect game against the Cleveland Blues on June 12, 1880, the first in major league history. The game was the only perfect game to feature three outs on “foul bounds,” which were balls caught after bouncing once in foul territory. The foul bounds rule was eliminated after three more seasons. The Ruby Legs won the game, 1-0.

MAJOR LEAGUE HISTORY

Machine-spun cotton candy was invented in 1897 by the dentist William Morrison and confectioner John C. Wharton and first introduced to a wide audience at the 1904 World’s Fair as “Fairy Floss”with great success, selling 68,655 boxes at the then-high price of 25¢, half the cost of admission to the fair.

Joseph Lascaux, a dentist from New Orleans, Louisiana, invented a similar cotton candy machine in 1921. In fact, Lascaux patent named the sweet confection “cotton candy” and the “fairy floss” name faded away, although it retains this name in Australia. In 1916, the company held a contest in which

the winning design would become their brand icon. Young Antonio Gentile submitted a sketch of an anthropomorphicpeanut with arms and crossed legswhich he called "Mr. Peanut." A graphic artist later added a monocle, top hat, white gloves, and a cane to indicate that Planters peanuts were in a class of their own. And Antonio? He won the grand prize...a whole $5!

Mr. Peanut, the mascot for Planters peanuts, was created by a 14-year-old.

PISCES: Transits through the thirty-first indicate a need to stay focused and to allow your self to choose to make decisions with self responsible carry through. The outcome may mean the difference between having what you desire or remain in what appears to be a possible state of confusion. Finances which have long seemed out of reach may arrive in your life on or around the twenty-seventh. Transits indicate making wise use of all monies through month’s duration.ARIES: The Sun; Venus; Mars; and Jupiter are all transiting through your home sign this week creating energies which may open many doors for your inner burning desires. Self Responsibility is indicated here to remain focuses on each of your life’s sectors through the thirty-first in orderto bring fruition to opportunities which may come your way. The twenty-seventh may bring pleasant outcomes to long awaited personal desires and/or goals.

TAURUS: Neptune in Pisces through the thirty-first could lead to success or possible indecision which may keep you from allowing your self to gain your desired outcomes. Self responsibility to allow your self to choose to make the wisest possible decisions is indicated through month’s duration. The Full moon in Libra on the twenty-seventh creates energies which indicate the possibility of great success upon active decision making and balanced carry through. GEMINI: Aries people are indicated to be high lighted in and about all sectors of your life through the thirty-first. Single Gemini may even find the love of your life now; quick decisions and fast action is indicated to insure you do not find your self walking alone when April showers are indicated to begin next week. The Full Moon on the twenty-seventh creates energies which allow you to be indecisive or decisive; self responsible- decisive action is indicated. MOON CHILD: The year- Two thousand and thirteen opens doors to many wonderful transits and aspects which may allow single Moon Children to (re-)discover their Highest Soul Mate and connect with them for a life time. Energies created by current transits this week open the doors fully to this possibility. Immediate and self-responsible action to insure this is indicated. Keepyour eyes wide open for this possibility between the twenty-fourth through the twenty-ninth.LEO: Similar to the other two fire signs- their are many transiting planets along with the Sun traveling through fire signs through the thirty-first. These transits create energies when used wisely may bring about desired outcomes. Using these energies to fuel your Natal (Birth) Sun energy may create a sense of over confidence for self- or you may project an appearance of being over bearing to others within all of life’s sectors. Self responsibility is indicated. VIRGO: Wise and self responsible decision making and action(s) from you are indicated by current transits through the thirty-first in order to insure the highest and best desired outcomes.Transits indicate an inner awareness for remembering we create our own reality through our choices or lack there of ( which is also a choice ). Transits also indicate for those Virgos whose hearth may be “feeling” empty- it is up to our-self to make the final decision to allow another(s) to walk with us. LIBRA: You may feel a great deal of energy on the twenty- four and twenty-fifth. Transits indicate taking self responsible action on theses two days. Self intuition is highlighted for possible direction. Transits from the twenty sixth through the twenty-ninth illuminate your path with the Full Moon occurring during the wee hours of the twenty seventh. Transits indicate keeping a close eye on opportunity around you in order to take possible action through March’s Duration. SCORPIO: Current transits indicate you may act as a catalyst for others around you to become upset with you- without cause or reason. Energies from current transits indicate you may desire to do more listening and less active talking ( especially “rattling” ) through the thirty-first. Self responsibility to project your valid self to others is indicated through month’s completion. This may allow you to connect with your heart’s desire for this life time. SAGITTARIUS: The Full Moon on the twenty-seventh creates “fuel for your fire” from the twenty-fourth through the twenty-ninth. Allow your self to make wise and kind decisions with your self and others in order to allow yourself to receive the Highest and Best from energies created by current aspects and transits. Even with all of the “fire in the sky” through the thirty-first- Saturn Retrograde in Scorpio could rain on your parade if you allow your self to give into toyour critical nature.CAPRICORN: Current transits through the thirty-first create energies which may have your “digging in” to a greater degree through the thirty first. This may allow you to be even less flexible. Transits from the twenty-fifth through the twenty ninth give off energies which may allowyou to be surprisingly more flexible and gentle in thought and action. Self responsible actions from flexibility is indicated through month’s completion. A RARE DEFENSIVE MANEUVER

There is a certain amount of guesswork in bridge, but some of it can be avoided or successfully resolved by tak-ing advantage of the infor-mation available in almost every deal.

For example, take this case where the defense must function perfectly to defeat five clubs. Superficially, it seems that South is a goner from the start, since East-West can collect the first three spade tricks.

But in practice, this is eas-ier said than done. To begin with, West must find the killing spade lead. And even if he does, East must find the right defense or South will

romp home with 11 tricks.Assume you’re East and

partner leads the three of spades following the auction shown. Partner should have the queen of spades, as he would have led “top of noth-ing” with three or four small spades.

Let’s say you win with the king and cash the ace, declarer contributing the 6-4 on the first two tricks.

At this point you have a difficult problem to solve. If South has [S] 64 [H] x [D] AQJxxx [C] AKQx, you must cash the ace of hearts to beat the contract. But if he has [S] 764 [H] — [D] AQJxxx [C] AKQx, you must lead another spade. In this case, the bidding doesn’t provide any helpful clues, because declarer would probably have bid the same way with either hand.

Strangely enough, the problem can be resolved by winning the opening lead with the king and returning the deuce of spades (your original fourth-best spade) at trick two.

If West started with the Q-7-5-3 of spades, he will know that declarer has no more spades and will shift to a heart to sink the con-tract, while if he started with the Q-5-3 of spades, he will return a spade, knowing that declarer has another spade to lose.

Lee Marvin: Point Blankby Dwayne Epstein, after-word by Christopher Marvin(Schaffner Press, $27.95)Reviewed by Larry Cox

Much of what we think we know about Lee Marvin is gleaned from his tough-guy film roles. Some of his per-formances remain as chill-ing as when they were first released. For example, who could forget Marvin in John Ford’s “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” the brutal-ity of “The Big Red One” and his impressive turn in the iconic “The Dirty Doz-en.” Then there’s his Oscar-winning dual role in “Cat Ballou.”

Although his work helped establish Marvin as one of the industry’s most impres-sive actors, not much has been revealed about his personal life, even his com-bat experiences as a Marine during World War II.

What makes this new biography so intriguing is that author Dwayne Epstein researched Marvin for sev-eral years, interviewing doz-ens of members of the acting profession in addition to his closest friends and family members. The result is a bal-anced book with even more

depth than the previous full-length biography of Marvin, which was published before his death in 1987 at age 63.

According to Epstein, more than 100 people were interviewed for this proj-ect. Two standouts include Lee’s brother, Robert, and the actor’s first wife, Betty. Others who offered insight include actors Angie Dick-inson and Jack Palance, and directors John Franken-heimer and Stanley Kramer.

A critic for The New York Times nicknamed Marvin “The Merchant of Men-ace” after seeing him shoot a scene in “The Big Heat.” This film was notable for the scene where Marvin’s character tosses a pot of scalding coffee into Gloria Grahame’s face. It was only a supporting role, but the actor left his indelible mark on the final product. Ironi-cally, it wasn’t feature films that made Marvin a house-hold name, but a TV series, “M Squad,” which debuted in 1957.

“Point Blank” is a rol-licking narrative that comes about as close to the authentic Marvin as we are apt to get.

Perfume Bottles

Q: I am not a collector but have managed

to accumulate several old-er perfume bottles, which I purchased at garage sales in the Chicago area. There are four I think could be valuable: “La Prairie” by Waterstone, “Nanette,” “Aluria” by Lucretia Vanderbilt, and “Paradise for Two.” Are they worth keeping, or just more clutter? I think I probably paid a few dol-lars each for them. — San-dra, Naperville, Ill.

A: I found all of your bottles referenced in

“The Wonderful World of Perfume Bottles: Identifica-tion & Value Guide” by Jane Flanagan and published by Collector Books. Accord-ing to Flanagan, “Paradise for Two” was manufactured in 1908 by Schaefer-Martin Co. and is worth about $50 with its original box. “Atu-ria” is from 1938 and sells in the $45 to $60 range. “Nanette,” your rarest bot-tle, was introduced in 1950 and often sells in the collec-tor’s marketplace for $175. “La Prairie,” launched in 1993, is worth about $60. All things considered, you made four good invest-ments.

***

Q: I purchased a bas-ket for $5 at a flea

market and am enclos-ing a picture of it. I am curious about who made it and what it was used for. — Betty, Jamestown, Tenn.

A: Sometimes a basket is simply a basket.

This is the type of basket often found at import shops. Since they are mass-pro-duced and not signed, your question about who made it is impossible to answer. It is of recent origin, and you probably paid about what it is worth.

***

Q: I have a 5-inch-high pitcher signed

by Hohr Merkel. What can you tell me about it? — Beverly, Lake Lillian, Minn.

A: I examined the pic-tures you sent me,

and your pitcher appears to be from Copenhagen. Pitch-ers and vases of this type generally sell in the $15 to $25 range. I was not able to find the artist in any of my reference books.

***

Q: I have eight Boy’s Life magazines

from the 1960s, and I am wondering if they are worth keeping. — James, Hooksett, N.H.

A: Not really, since most of the copies of this

magazine I’ve seen from this period have been priced for about a dollar an issue.

Icky AlgaeDEAR PAW’S COR-

NER: The water in my aquarium is green! What did I do wrong, and how can I clear up the view? — James, Sarasota, Fla.

DEAR JAMES: The green water is caused by an explo-sive growth of aquarium algae. A small amount of algae is normal in aquari-ums, but too much can cause all sorts of problems.

One of three things — or possibly all three — may have occurred to turn your aquarium water green. You may be overfeeding the fish; the aquarium may not be getting regular mainte-nance (changing the water, etc.); or the unit is sitting in direct sunlight.

The solution to this type of algae, then, is to monitor and adjust the fish’s food supply; stick to a mainte-nance schedule; and move the aquarium out of direct sunlight if needed.

Other types of algae can plague aquarium life and make the tank look just plain ugly. For example, if colonies of brown algae form in a tank, then the

light levels are too low and the water has too many nutrients. Smelly, slimy blue-green algae (actually a bacteria) is caused by insuf-ficient maintenance and is extremely difficult to clear up, but turning off the tank light for up to a week can slow its growth.

Change the water at least every week (two weeks at most), making sure the new water has had its chlorine content neutralized and that its temperature matches the water in the tank. Scrape away excess algae while the water level is low, and wipe the inside of the glass with a clean cloth. Don’t use algaecides to clear up the problem; you’ll clear out the fish population as well. Check all filters and intake tubes to ensure they’re not clogged.

10 ASK PSYCHIC; MEDIUM; ASTROLOGER

I have a mother who is becoming elderly. I have already experienced my father; grand parents; and my spouse passing to the other side of life. Could you please give insight as to the reason she seems upset with me for attempting to make her life comfortable?

Firstly, as I come into your vibration- there are many here giving you a great amount of unconditional Love and God’s Light. Your spirit teachers; guides; and angels appear here for you with love; light; and inspiration. They are relaying- your mother is elderly and at the same time she has her “wits” and “right mind” about her. They go on to relay- this may be related to the times when you observe others who are meeting your mother for the first time- they see her greying to whitening hair and they assume she has less than perfect hearing- as indicated by observing them raising their voice so she can hear them- when in many cases her hearing is better than those doing this with her. They ask me to ask you if you are aware of how someone can tell if anyone having a human experience has completed what they chose to come to the earth plane for. They then relay the answer to you...when a spirit having a human experience continues to walk in body- they have not completed their purpose. They also would like you to become aware of the following- when you treat your mother as a child- by doing things for her which she is capable of doing for herself- often times this makes her feel as if you are taking away her dignity and you are not respecting her as your mother and a fellow spirit having a human experience. They continue on by relaying the following- when your mother tells you she would like to do something and you tell her... you know you are not up to this... you act as a catalyst which allows her to feel less than...versus...feeling you love her and realize she is your mother...and as her child...you would understand and know... not only...how important this is to Her...also- if- you would ask her for the same...your mother would obtain the moon and the stars for you...if...this were your desire. Your father and your spouse are both here now relaying their love for you and asking you to realize deep within your heart and spirit it is they who passed to the other side and not your mother. They are asking you to please consider...if this was you... and someone ( including your mother ) were to be treating you the way you are responding to your mother...how you would feel. Your husband and father’s spirits relay...you are an angel on earth for your mother...as God only tells us... yes...so too... please start listening to your mother’s requests...as God listens to your ( all of our ) prayers... and... please begin acting as a catalyst in order to answer her requests by saying yes and assisting your mother to carry through with her requests. They go forward to relay to you...the reason you have been responding to your mother in the way you have been... is due to your fear of the transition you refer to as “death...” and because you are afraid of her leaving you in order to move on to the other side. All of those from the other side are now asking me to remind you...by keeping someone from living ( in total aliveness ) will not keep them from crossing to the other side. They leave by giving you embraces; hugs; and sending you much love and light.

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive

Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern TierAs we write this, New York’s Governor and Legislature

have yet to announce a final agreement on a budget for the fiscal year that begins April 1. But they have reached a “conceptual agreement” on a $142-billion budget, and it is not necessarily good for business.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says there is a net tax cut by $650-million over several years and added, “This budget is very much about creating jobs and cutting taxes.”

But is it really? The package calls for increasing the minimum wage and for renewing the 18-a energy assessment, which was intended to be a temporary measure to help close deficits in prior budgets but has since turned into a continuous tax on consumers – one that hits businesses particularly hard.

Brian Sampson, executive director of Unshackle Upstate, said, “On the surface we’re disappointed. The (18-a assessment) was due to sunset and you’ve extended it for another few years. Even if you extend it at a lower rate, it is still a tax increase because it was supposed to go away.”

The budget plan calls for raising the state’s minimum wage to $9 an hour by 2016, despite the fact that study after study shows raising the minimum wage will cause a decrease in jobs and will not positively impact the population it is intended to help. A 2008 Cornell University study titled The Effects of Minimum Wage Increases in New York State: Evidence from a Natural Experiment, concludes that the increase is “unlikely to benefit New York’s working poor because most minimum wage workers who will benefit are not poor, many workers who are poor earn wages greater than state or federal minimum wages, and there are substantial adverse employment effects, which fall quite heavily on low-skilled workers living in poor households.

A decision to increase the minimum wage makes New York State less competitive with Pennsylvania for retaining businesses. In addition, businesses will be less likely to add employees or invest in new technology and equipment if they have to allocate additional resources to payroll.

There are alternatives. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program may be a more efficient anti-poverty tool that could help many of New York’s working households without causing adverse employment effects. Another alternative would be to establish a training wage at the current minimum wage, which would benefit businesses that see high turnover rates in the early months of employment.

In the long term the real answer to poverty and underemployment is not wage increases, it is education and training that empowers people with the tools to improve their employment prospects and provide for their families.

Government alone does not create jobs, unless of course they are government jobs. To truly create jobs in this state we must create a fertile, supportive business environment where the private sector can thrive. Venture capital based in New York is investing elsewhere, not because we have too few state run technology hubs, but because it does not make businesses sense. In a State where counties pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation, it is hard to encourage investment.

Each year the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce provides opportunities for its members to have a direct conversation with elected officials from each level of government. This year, the State Legislative Breakfast will be held April 19 at the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. Senator Cathy Young and Assemblyman Andrew Goodell will provide their insights about legislation in Albany, and be available for questions from the audience.

The State Legislative Breakfast is sponsored by Affinity One Federal Credit Union, DFT Communications, Jamestown Community College, Jamestown Mattress Company, KeyBank, Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York, Nestle Purina PetCare, OBSERVER, The Post-Journal, Serta Mattress Company, the State University of New York at Fredonia, WCA Hospital, and WJTN/WWSE/WKSN/WHUG/WQFX.

The State Legislative Breakfast is just $15 per person. You can register online through the Chamber’s web site and online events calendar, or call the Chamber at 366-6200 or 484-1101.

Two weeks ago, the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce asked members to log in on our website and answer a few short survey questions. Many of you did just that and we appreciate your time. 133 Chamber members answered five quick questions on Chamber events and training programs, and we wanted to get back to you with the results.

When asked about the importance of Chamber networking events, 26% of respondents said they are very important, while another 57% said they were somewhat important. 75% said social interaction and meeting new people was the most important aspect of the Chamber’s networking events, while 23% said learning something new was important to them. Thursday evenings are the most popular night for holding Chamber networking events, with 26% of the answers, while another 19% said Wednesdays would be good.

Only 23% of our respondents have ever attended a Business Over Bagels training event. 76% felt Promoting Your Business would be the topic they would most like to learn about in an upcoming session.

These survey results will help the Chamber to better meet the needs of our members in the year ahead. We are planning a number of events to assist our members in their need to improve business connections through networking and to learn more about how to better manage certain aspects of their business. Watch for information coming soon on additional Chamber events for 2013.

Moving your farm & family forward

Our FarmNet worked with us to restructure our finances and implement a plan to

closely monitor our production costs. Thank you FarmNet!

“ “

I was confident about our financial situation on the

farm and started doing some pre-tax planning.

Our accountant suggested buying some crop inputs

for next year. After meeting with our supplier I was

shocked at the projected cost to produce milk and

I started worrying about cash flow.

My fertilizer supplier sensed my concern and

suggested I call FarmNet. A FarmNet financial

consultant came to my farm and helped me

restructure my finances and implement a plan to

more closely monitor my cost of production and

reduce my stress. They did this at no cost.

Thanks FarmNet!

How long is a “jiffy”?

Officially, it’s 1/100th of a second - an actual

unit of time.

Chickens can’t swallow while they are

upside down.

Laughing lowers levels of stress hormones & strengthens the immune system. Six-year-olds laugh an average of 300 times a day. Adults only laugh 15 to 100 times a day.

Robert F. Kennedy

“Only those who dare to

fail greatly can ever achieve

greatly.”

Did you know...

Dinosaur remains have been found on every continent on Earth, including Antarctica.

The term “dinosaur” was coined in 1842 and roughly means “terrible lizard” by English paleontologist Richard Owen. The Chinese word for dinosaur is “konglong” which means “terrible dragon”.

The smallest dinosaurs were about the size of a chicken. The largest dinosaurs were over 50 feet tall and 100 feet long.

33% of Americans talk to their dogs on the phone or leave messages for the dog when they are gone from home.

The original copy of the Declaration of Independence is lost. The copy in

Washington D.C. is a handmade copy. The original was written on hemp paper.

Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, John Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on

August 2nd, but the last signature wasn’t added until five years later.

The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occured in 1804, but it wasn’t until 1941 that Congress declared July 4th a

federal legal holiday.
