Berkshire Medical Center Breast Program Approved by National Accreditation Organization

Berkshire Medical Center’s Breast Program has been granted

a three-year/Full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. The BMC program was also cited by the NAPBC in four areas for Best Practice designation.

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement.

“A breast program that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease,” according to the NAPBC.

“This remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication of our entire Breast Program team at BMC to provide our patients with the highest quality of care,” said Diane Kelly, RN, BMC Chief Operating Officer. “It’s critically important that we provide these comprehensive breast care services, giving our community access to multi-disciplinary, state-of-the-art care, close to home.”

The NAPBC cited BMC’s Breast Program in four areas for providing Best Practice services, including breast conservation, breast cancer staging, pathology reports and

nursing. BMC’s work in those areas will be included in NAPBC’s national database of information that can be used by other programs to help meet NAPBC standards of care.

The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. This mission is pursued through standard-setting, scientific validation, and patient and professional education. Its board membership includes professionals from 20 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that there will be 232,670 patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2014. In addition, hundreds of thousands of women who will deal with benign breast disease this year will require medical evaluation for treatment options.

TaoismSince the earliest recorded times, Chinese thought has been characterized by an awareness of man’s close relationship with nature and the universe. Two basic distinctions in nature are symbolized by the Yin and Yang (sun and moon, heaven and earth, dark and light, chaos and order, etc.) Taoism sees balance as the basic characteristic underlying these distinctions.

Traditional Chinese medicine includes herbal treatments, diet therapy, use of animal secretions and organs, and folk methods. Chinese women, because they are modest about their bodies, believe in proactive healthcare. At the end of life on earth, Chinese perceive death as natural, an extension of life.

Generosity from Community Apparent at Cancer Center

The community is embracing the new BMC Cancer Center, as

has become clear in recent months with several touching donations from various individuals and groups. A group called the Red Hot Damsels of Dalton created a handmade shawl for a patient, in memory of one of their own, Barbara Rupprecht. The St. Stanislau’s Caring Hands organization followed in that same vein by donating over 20 handmade prayer shawls to the Cancer Center for its patients.

“One of the most heartfelt donations came from a 9-year-old boy and his mother,” said Sue Duncan, RN, BSN, CRNI, Administrative Director. “Mace Donahue and his mother, Meagheanne, came in with 20 large gift bags, filled with supplies that a cancer patient might need during treatment. This included water bottles, lotions, lip balm, Gatorade, tissues and more. He said he did this for his grandfather and an uncle, both who had cancer.”

Duncan said the family did not have a lot of money, but they wanted to make a difference. They and the many other people and organizations that have supported the Cancer Center have, and will continue to make a difference.

Sue Duncan, RN, Administrative Director of the Cancer Center, right, accepts one of the prayer shawls made by the St. Stan’s Caring Hands group. The shawls are being given to patients at the Cancer Center. Numerous other creative and touching donations have been made recently by members of the community to the new Cancer Center.

BHS Accepting New

Applications for Critical Shortage

Radiologic Technologist

Program

Berkshire Medical Center, Fairview Hospital, BMC and Fairview Physician Practice and Berkshire Health Systems

Management Company employees who are interested in joining the ranks of Radiologic Technologists will have the opportunity to receive training free of charge, if eligible. Similar in nature to BHS programs that provide educational assistance in Nursing, the Radiology Training Program is open to employees with one year or more of service. The program provides 100% coverage of tuition, books, fees and uniforms for the Radiologic Technologist training.

To qualify for the program, interested employees must complete an application process which includes: verification of qualifications for admission into the program, submission of transcripts from past academic institutions (such as high school or college), completion of an application form, submission of a letter of recommendation from his/her supervisor and an essay identifying why you want to enter the program. Applications for the program are available through the Berkshire Health Systems Education Department.

There are a limited number of positions available in all Radiology Technology Programs, which require a minimum 2-year educational commitment. The successful applicants will be selected based on documentation submitted in the application process, attendance records, performance evaluations, overall work record and discussion with their supervisor(s).

BHS is again offering an opportunity for employees interested in training to become Radiologic Technologists to do so through the organization’s unique Critical Shortage program, which pays all tuition and fees for the training for eligible applicants.

Acceptance into the Radiology Critical Shortage Program does not guarantee acceptance into the school. Employees must also complete all application processes required by the school, as well as, all prerequisites. Application to the school must be made one year before admission. It may take up to two years to complete prerequisites and other requirements before being accepted into the school.

Completion of these requirements is considered to be a part of the Critical Shortage Program; and expenses for this are covered under the plan. Through a cooperative effort among Western Massachusetts community colleges, courses for these schools may be completed at any local community college, such as Berkshire Community College. There is an academic advisor appointed at each of these institutions to assist in identifying each applicants specific learning needs. Other specific criteria will be reviewed with the applicants who are accepted into the program.

Upon completion of the program, participants must agree to work a minimum of two years at an assigned entity of BHS. Employees who choose not to work for BHS during the program are committed to three years employment.

If you are interested in applying for this program, please complete the application appearing in this issue of The Scope and send it to the BHS education department by August 16, 2014.QuestionsmayalsobereferredtoBettyKirbyintheEducation Department at Ext. 2132.

United Way Corner

Berkshire United Way is helping families maximize their income by increasing their tax refunds? For the 2013 tax year, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, supported by Berkshire United Way, secured over $1.3

million in tax refunds to 985 Berkshire County low-income working families; half a million dollars more than in 2012. The county’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) return increased to $559,912 in 2013, and studies show that the EITC encourages work, reduces poverty, and also improves child health and academic achievement, increasing the likelihood of college attendance and improving the prospects for higher earnings when children become adults.

Consider donating today – your community depends on it! Visit the BHS United Way portal page or contact your BHS United Way Co-Chairs ([email protected] or [email protected]) to learn more.

Chaplain’s Corner God As Coach, Continued By The Reverend Art Kaufman, BMC Chaplain

I’m continuing a theme that I started a few issues ago, of thinking about God (Higher Power, Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh, the Force, etc.) as the world’s best coach, as a coach whose motto isn’t, “winning is everything,” but rather it’s how you play the

game that really matters.

One of the most important things every coach, including this one, does is let us know when the rules of the game change (and they are constantly changing). Bare Knuckles boxing is now outlawed; flagrant fouls are no longer ignored (or used by coaches as part of their strategy). In the game of life discriminating against people because of their culture, color, religion, sexual identity or preference is no longer tolerated, and no religion is considered to be any better (or any worse) than any other.

It is a certainty that yet more changes are on the way and our coach will help us to accept these changes because they are for our own good and for the good of those we live with in this ever-changing world.

“I’ve never had a single problem with any staff through many stays. The whole group, including doctors, nurses, food service, housekeeping, are terrific and top notch head to toe. You’ve all saved my life more than once.” – Comment from a BMC Surgical Services patient

“You have a great hospital, we are lucky to have you in our community.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“The staff I dealt with was awesome. My nurse was kind and compassionate, very quick to respond with the outcome of my test.” – Comment from a BMC Cardiovascular Center patient

“It’s always quick and easy here. I come in, wait a few minutes, get (my blood work done) and off I go.” – Comment from a BMC Laboratory Services patient

“I had a wonderful experience. Found a lump, and I was seen immediately for a mammography, went to ultra sound, where cysts were found. I was at work by 11:00 am when mammography was at 9:00 am. Dr. Lisa Loring was amazing as well as the clinician/nurse assisting. Thank you.” – Comment from a BMC Women’s Imaging Center patient

As a retired physician and an Emergency Department, I judge the Fairview Hospital physicians and care and facilities to be outstanding.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“The nurses and other staff on the 3rd floor were so kind, compassionate and caring. I found that the entire staff at BMC is just exceptional. For a hospital stay I found it to be very nice and comfortable.” – Comment from a BMC Orthopaedic Unit patient

“Best program I've ever been involved in. Great caring, helpful staff.” – Comment from a BMC Cardiac Rehabilitation Program patient

“My medical, physical, and emotional needs were respected and addressed in a very professional manner.” – Comment from a BMC Oncology patient

“The lady who conducted my MRI was extremely kind and sensitive. Her attitude was very helpful to me.” – Comment from a BMC Radiology Services patient
