Emergency Drill Hones Response Skills in North Berkshire

A Berkshire Regional Transit Authority bus collided with a dump truck on June 16th, resulting in

numerous casualties, including fatalities, and presented a challenge to the cadre of emergency response agencies that rushed to the scene. While this scenario can happen anytime, the incident at an empty parking lot on the Curran Highway in North Adams was actually an emergency drill, giving police, fire and ambulance crews, and the North Adams Campus of Berkshire Medical Center a taste of what an actual mass casualty incident would look like.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel from North Adams, Adams and Williamstown participated, as did the staff of the North Adams Campus of BMC. The mock crash, depicted with a great deal of realism using an actual out-of-use BRTA bus and a city truck, also featured volunteer ‘victims’ and drill mannekins. They were tended to by the emergency personnel on-scene before some were transported to the Satellite Emergency Facility at the North Adams Campus. The Command Center was also activated at BMC to coordinate the hospital’s response.

These community drills are invaluable in helping responders and hospital personnel to hone their skills in the event of a real incident.

Below: The North Adams Campus of BMC was filled with activity during the drill, as staff responded using protocols that would be used if a real incident was to take place.

A bus and dump truck crash was the scenario for the June 16th emergency drill in North Adams, where drill planners were able to procure an out-of-use bus and a city truck to make the situation more realistic.

Personnel from the North Adams Campus of BMC participated in the drill, as ‘victims’ were transported by ambulance to the Satellite Emergency Facility for treatment.

While mannekins were used for some ‘victims,’ volunteers from the community made up the bulk of those ‘injured’ during the incident.

A subcommittee of the Leadership and Management Development

Program (LMDP) of the BHS Institute for Organizational Learning helped to bring some wellness education to students, staff and their families at the Conte Community School. The LMDP committee held a Wellness Picnic at Conte on May 31st, providing information and activities on posture and backpack safety, blood pressure screenings, concussion awareness, smoking cessation, Internet safety and some fun games.

The committee members were John Gable, Bretta Karp, Tim Korte, Kelly McCarthy and Kathy McNinch. Lorraine Mancuso from the BHS Education Department was also involved, as Conte is a Partner in Education with BHS. Other LMDP participants included Sean Livey, Matt Painter, Judy Jansen and Deborah Renzi.

Conte staff was very appreciative of the event. They sent several comments to the organizers, including, “Words cannot express the high that I am still on as I sit at home right now, reflecting on the Conte Family Picnic event tonight. What an amazing turnout and what a positive way to end the year. Even more important, this was a great event for the entire community. A huge thank you for making this event so successful.”

Participation in several activities allowed those at the picnic to be part of the prize drawings, which included girls and boys bicycles with helmets, donated by the Radiologists of Advanced Berkshire Medical Imaging, an adult mountain biking helmet, donated by John Gable, two printers donated by BHS Information Systems and a Big Y gift certificate. Teachers and school staff assisted with the event.

On May 31st, members of the BHS Leadership and Managing Development Program, in concert with BHS Education, held a Wellness Picnic at Conte Community School.

In Memoriam• Ruth M. Ditore, who worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the ICU/CCU at the former Pittsfield General Hospital, now Berkshire Medical Center, died on June 23rd at the age of 89.

• Carol A. Doucette, a medical secretary at Berkshire Medical Center for the past 13 years, died on July 25th at the age of 58.

The staff of Berkshire Health Systems offers its deepest condolences to their friends and family.

“My mother and I wish to express our gratitude to all members of my father’s team for their clinical excellence and immense kindness. His physicians and nurses were very aware of them and sensitive to his extreme anxiety regarding procedures. They were very reassuring. He was taken in immediately for registration and his preparation and procedure followed without delay. We are so pleased to have this Campus and to have the benefit of such an excellent medical staff. It was also a relief to receive the results in such a timely manner. We express our appreciation to the staff and hope they learn of our gratitude.” – Comment from a North Adams Campus of BMC patient

“Most excellent care and treatment during my hospitalization and follow-up treatment at the Wound Center. Memorable doctors and nursing staff.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“It was a very good experience. There is nothing to complain about even if I searched for something.” – Comment from a BMC Surgical Services patient

“The therapist was excellent. I progressed further then I thought I would. She explained everything and made me feel comfortable about the progress.” – Comment from a BMC Center for Rehabilitation patient

“If a hospital experience can be great, this was a wonderful experience at BMC. Everyone, from rehab unit to ortho unit, doctors, nurses, aides, social workers, food servers, maintenance were all great.” – Comment from a BMC Orthopedic Unit patient

“Every visit to Fairview has been a very good experience. Everyone is so caring and supportive and cares for us in a timely manner. Also, the cardiology rehab is great too.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“My experience with cancer has been a learning experience of the goodness of doctors and professional nurses. Yes, I will recommend your facility to other people. God bless you. Much love. “ – Comment from a BMC Radiation Oncology patient

“Everyone was fantastic. They made me feel welcomed, relaxed, we even made jokes. Everyone was very congenial. I would definitely recommend the center to anyone.” – Comment from a North Adams Campus of BMC patient

“My experience was excellent. I came to the emergency room with a stroke and your team reacted very well. CT scan and TPA rapidly administered giving me a very successful 100% recovery.” – Comment from a BMC Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit patient

“I was very well treated. Everyone I came into contact with was kind, considerate and helpful. Attitude makes a huge difference at times of illness. I appreciate the help I was given, and the way it was given. Thank you all.” – Comment from a BMC Telemetry Unit patient

“I was referred by a friend who had nothing but praise for the program and staff. I can now echo those sentiments.” – Comment from a BMC Cardiac Rehabilitation patient
