Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

Learning from the Young Ones

There is a saying “the older, the wiser”.

It is therefore logical that we Rotarians would consider ourselves somewhat “wise” as we are fairly “old” as compared with our Interactors. We

always assume that we are the ones who do the teaching rather than the other way round.

However, on 4 September 2010, at the Semi-Finals of the Interact Elocution Contest, I have learnt from our Interactors.

Generally as we grow older, we tend to settle into a certain comfort zone. We become less energetic and excitable about event and happenings around us. It was therefore a refreshing experience for me to watch and hear the participants articulating their own optimistic views on topics such as “unity in diversity” and “Building 1 Malaysia” with much feelings and enthusiasm. They have transported my thoughts back to my schooling days, when I had big dreams and life ahead was full of adventures.

“I am not Malay, Chinese or Indian. I am Malaysian” said Venessa Pearl Tay, a participant from SMK (perempuan) Pudu, in a strong and certain voice.

At some point, I was moved to tears and I noticed that I was not alone as PP VG Chandran too was trying to hold back his tears.

It will not be too distant in the future that these youths will take over the roles of captain of industries, top professionals, civil servants, law makers etc. etc In short, these bright and intelligent youths will mold our future.

They will become the “leaders” and “teachers”. We’d better get used to the idea of learning from the younger ones…….

In Rotary Service,President RY 2010/2011

ROTARY: IS IT TIME FOR A RE-READ?

“There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.”

-Louis L’Amour, Lonely on the Mountain

English was not my father’s first language

And like a lot of second language learners, he was an avid reader. He especially liked Conrad and Melville and read their bodies of work not once but several times during his life. As a young man, it was not uncommon for him to drop my mother off at her home after a date and head for a neighborhood diner, book in hand, to read and drink coffee until the night waitress closed up and shooed him home.

Later in life, he added Louis L’Amour westerns to his list of favorites. One of the simple and great pleasures of his day was to settle into a comfortable chair in the evening to revisit a favorite read for a second or third time - or more.

Why did he prefer to re-read, rather than switch to something new? I asked him once. His answer, like him, was straightforward but not necessarily simple: it was a good book the last time, and he got something new from a book every time he read it.

Lately it’s occurred to me that my father got something new out of old favorites in part because his insights changed with his life experience. The books weren’t different but what he brought to them each time was.

As we enter a new Rotary year, I’ve been thinking about what we each bring to our Rotary experience, both individually as Rotarians and collectively in our clubs. Beginning a new year brings with it an opportunity for all of us to take a “new read” on Rotary and on our clubs.

Are we truly bringing new perspectives to Service Above Self? Or are we operating from perspectives we’ve always held?

Maybe it’s time for a re-read. To gain something new from being a Rotarian by bringing something new to the experience. And like my father reading in the neighborhood diner, we can change our local perspectives and open ourselves up to a whole new world of possibilities.

(unquote {by PDG Elizabeth})

The above is a selection from the ‘Thought Spot Collection’ available on the site, www.whitespacerevenue.com under Rotary Blog and was submitted by PDG Dr. Paul Lee.

This could just be the right time for us to do a “re-read” of Rotary and for being a Pudu Rotarian. One just need to read and re-read this article to do some soul searching about this whole “business” of being a Rotarian.

President’s Announcement

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE

Hello Rotarians,

It has taken me longer than I would have liked to get around to writing this email, but I suppose that it is better this way, as I have had a chance to experience more.

For anyone who does not know me, my name is Amanda Wilson, and I am participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program for the year 2010-2011, and I am in Bhopal, India.

This email is to tell everyone thank you. Even if we never met, or you didn’t help directly with the exchange, I want to send a thank you to each and every Rotarian, with a special thanks to District 5060 of the United States and Canada, and District 3040 of India, as well as the Club of Downtown Yakima who sponsored me.

Without Rotary, I wouldn’t be in India today. Without Rotary, I wouldn’t be staying with this amazing family who is so kind and welcoming, experiencing a new culture, and beginning the fulfillment of my dream to travel the world. Without Rotary and its supporting Rotarians, this would not have been possible.

India is everything I hoped it would be, and nothing I expected. Everything is so different from America, and that is exactly what I asked for.

I thought this year would be a chance to see another part of the world, another way to live, another culture. It is so much more.

I have only been here 3 weeks, and I already know that India is changing me. This experience is just that, an experience.

I can read about India, I can watch movies and do research, but nothing is like being here, standing in the middle of another way of life, and taking it all in.

So again, I say thank you. Before, India was only a dream, now I have to pinch myself as a reminder that this is real, that I, Amanda Wilson, from the Yakima Valley, in one state, in one country, in a whole wide world, got the chance to live my dream, because Rotary and its Rotarians knew the importance of opening the eyes, minds, and hearts of a generation eager to learn.

I can not say thank you enough or express in words what you have all done for me.

All the best,

-Amanda WILSON

INTER-DISTRICT INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP EVENING District 3300

Organizing Club : RC Danau Desa, Date : 30th September 2010, Venue : Perdana Ballroom - Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Club, Kuala Lumpur

An evening of fellowship, to network, to bridge continents and build communities!

Our District Governor Lim Kok Beng and District Governor Olivannan of District 3230 lead the two districts to an evening of friendship.

About one hundred and fifty Rotarians and spouses of Rotarians from District 3230 would be arriving in Kuala Lumpur on a friendship visit. The District comprises of clubs in and around the city of Chennai (formerly – Madras), South India. If one does not consider the sea in between – they are our neighboring district, geographically. The two districts have planned for a program of forming sister clubs amongst the clubs. With this intention about 40 clubs are expected to be present, and from out of the clubs in our districts many clubs have evinced interest to form sister club arrangement with the clubs from District 3230.

The program on the evening of 30th September will be graced by the presence of Incoming Rotary International Director for Zone 6 A, PDG Shekhar Mehta from the Rotary Club of Calcutta. PDG Shekar Mehta will become the RI Director for Zone 6A, which includes our District 3300, during the years 2011-2013.

There are several Clubs in District 3230 and clubs in our district who have formed sister club links and friendship club links in the past. This will be an opportunity to extend the past relationship and forge new relationships.

With Indian sub-continent becoming a powerhouse for regional and world economic growth this visit of rotarians from various professions and businesses would help forge strong ties with Rotarians with similar vocational interest in our district.

The evening’s program will include a cocktail hour to get acquainted with friends from District 3230, and the main program of signing sister club agreements, words of wisdom from the Chief Guest and the distinguished District Governors of the two districts, followed by a buffet dinner and entertainment program, and an evening of songs, music and dance among friends.

The cost is set at RM 70, with hard drinks available on sale. Details would be sent to the Presidents of the various clubs and the Assistant Governors.

Clubs interested to form sister club arrangement are to contact PP Darul Abdullah at RC Melawati, or through the Organizing Committee co-chair Rtn. Nagarajan of RC Danau Desa.

As this is a family fellowship, members are encouraged to attend with their spouses. Children of any age not permitted due to limited seating available.

More information would be forthcoming and those who need specific details please contact President Lim Poh Huu or PP Shankar of RC Danau Desa.
