Fair Trade USA collects sales reports from partners to ensure each product sold with our logo is a credible Fair Trade product.

Working with Fair Trade USAFair Trade Certified™

Fair Trade USA maintains the integrity of the Fair Trade Certified Label™, which communicates to end buyers that the product being purchased is indeed fairly traded.

The active participation of suppliers is key in the verification process. Producers and exporters selling into Fair Trade USA supply chains must register with Fair Trade USA. Registration is easy and at no additional cost to FLO-Cert Certified organizations.

Here’s how to register and maintain your registration:

Children and Adults Access EducationCommunity, Education Investment

The Union has been able to expand schools, upgrading many to secondary high school levels, and building others closer to town so students wouldn’t have to travel long distances (leaving more time to study and help the family). Miss Likinesh Elias, for example, now only travels 10 minutes to her school:

“Before this school was constructed, I was travelling two hours there and back. I was always late and when it rained it was even more difficult. Since this school has been opened here, I’m on time and have time to study.”

Mr Iyasu Wta, a member of the base- level Kllenso Makon Coffee Cooperative, is attending school with his kids. Prior to the Union, he could not afford to send both of his kids and himself to school; now he can. There is a new kindergarten, seven primary schools (grades 1-6), and two secondary schools. The Union has also provided scholarships to students pursuing higher degree.

The Union has developed 45 spring water wells that can be used for potable water. The Fair Trade premiums have also funded three deep water well extractions, constructed six health posts and one veterinary clinic.

New Bridges Connect Communities Community, Production Investment

Fair Trade Premiums have also contributed to the construction of at least two bridges, providing easier, and safer, routes. “This water stream used to divide people on both sides of the river before it was constructed, especially during rainy seasons,” says Obbo Mitikkuu Damisee; now it links both sides.More information on OCFCU available here.

New Roads Ease Production and Connect Communities Community, Production, Economic Investment

The Shoye Cooperative invested in a road construction and rehabilitation project, which connects residents across five districts to two coffee washing stations, four schools, one health clinic, six healthcare posts, several small markets and religious institutions (approx. 4,500 beneficiaries).

Electricity Line InstallationsCommunity, Social Investment

Two base-level cooperatives, Fero and Homacho Waeno, installed electricity lines from nearby towns to their cooperative areas, providing access to electricity to over 5,000 community members.

Telamo, another base- level cooperative, built a warehouse for coffee collection and storage.

Building Elementary SchoolsEducation Investment

The Shilicho Cooperative constructed three schools, benefitting 1,200 students in the Dara district.

A Private Rural Hospital in Misuku Health, Community Investment

The Misuku Cooperative, the Union’s largest group of producers, earmarked $US 50,000 of their entitled Fair Trade Premium ($US 58,919.96 total) for a health program which includes a Private Rural Hospital for members and communities in the area. The structures shown to the right will be remodeled to host the Misuku Rural Private Hospital.
