There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living? .When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father.?? So he got up and went to his father.

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. ? [Then] the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' Luke 15:11ff

How many times in our lives have we thought we could do things on our own? How many times have we put together all we had and left our families, left our friends, left our God . . . just because we thought we had all the answers, all the resources, all the wisdom needed to make it on our own? Many too many times if we are ?normal.?

Most of us have taken the same journey taken by this younger son. We believe that the answers to our lives must l ie somewhere . . . anywhere besides the place that we grew up. And too many times, in our desperation to separate ourselves from everything we once knew . . . we leave God back there with the potluck suppers in that l itt le church of our childhood.

The question is . . . ?have you come to your senses, yet?? Have you realized that ?There?s no place like home!?? Have you been able to put away your pride and to admit that your place is at home? at home with your family, and at home with God?

Have you realized that working in your father?s f ields is more fulf il l ing than struggling to make a name for yourself in a world that doesn?t care whether you

win or lose; that working in your father?s house is ult imately more rewarding than slopping the pigs of this world? God weeps as we attempt to make it on our own; and God?s arms are ever ready to reclaim us as those beloved children that we are. Won?t you ?come home?? I wonder . . .

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Anne

On September 10, Broadmoor Community, UCC wil l celebrate those who have come to their senses and have ?come home.? Who wil l you invite to ?come home? with you? AND . . . Who wil l you welcome with

the open arms and kisses of compassion and grace?

From Head to Heart to Embodied: Study Leave this Month

This past month I took my annual week long ?study leave.? This can mean dif ferent things in dif ferent contexts. For ordained ministers this is usually a week in class or spiritual development. This was my f irst ?study leave? since being ordained a litt le more than a year ago.   I decided that I would take a week off when my three children were away on summer activit ies, stay home and create my own study environment.   I wanted to share with you all some of what I studied and some of what I did.

I read two books, one blog, hiked and went to hot yoga several t imes throughout the week. I read a book called Insurrection, To believe is human, to Doubt, Divine by Peter Rollins, What is the Bible by Rob Bell and the blog Momastery by Glennon Doyle Melton. I l istened to the Bell book on Audible while I hiked and took long walks with my black lab, Gracie Esther and I read the actual book by Rollins.   I woke every morning and over a cup of coffee read Melton?s daily words. I took breaks to awaken by body and get embodied and out of my head- releasing the demons that may lay inside. It was quite a glorious and prayerful experience.   Here is what I learned from Momastery: that pain is our power, a whole lot about women in our culture and the importance of authenticity.

Here is what I learned from: What is the Bible:

* The Old Testament is so much about the next generation, so much about off-spring and making the world better for their children and their children's children.

* The Bible is a human library and human experience. It?s about our present t ime not future.

* We can see so much more about the Bible if we stand thousands of feet above the text, instead of being caught in the depths of the word.

* The people of the Bible used the idea of Covenant as their model of a justice system.

* The exaggerated stories (Noah?s Ark or Jonah and the Whale) mean that there is a much larger idea and wisdom than meets the eye. What is that?

Here is what I learned from: Insurrect ion:

* Invit ing people to open up to the experience of doubt and unknowing is more tricky?

* On the cross, Christ undergoes the deepest, most radical form of divine loss, one that is experienced.

* In the event of the Crucif ixion, we experience the loss of all that once gave us comfort and meaning.

* We need to ritualize the full range of human emotions, bringing radical doubt, ambiguity, mystery, and complexity into the very heart of our community.

* The highest truth is love itself .

Looking forward to using my studies and renewed energy these next few months as we begin the new program year. Please don't forget to check out the Faith Formation brochure if you are a parent or would like to volunteer this program year in children and youth ministry. As always, contact me if you have any questions.
