Climate: Belek enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. July and August are the hottest months. April to June and September to November are excellent months, climate-wise, for golfers, though it is a year-round golf destination.

this region is one of Europe’s fastest-growing golf destinations. Development is centred on the purpose-built resort of Belek, less than 20 miles from the main regional gateway of Antalya.

In just 15 years Belek has gone from having no golf at all to possessing 11 clubs offering 279 holes on 14 outstanding courses. More than half its new facilities have opened within the last two

years, in an intensive building phase kicked off by the 27-hole, Nick Faldo-designed Cornelia Golf Club. That was swiftly followed by PGA Design Consulting’s 18-hole Sueno Golf Club and the 18-hole Kaya Eagles Golf Club by Irish designer David Jones, who co-designed Belek’s first course, the National.

Championship winner-turned-architect Peter Thomson have added their illustrious names to the region’s designer hall of fame. Their creations are set to take an already-celebrated golf destination – it was named Europe’s Golf Destination of the Year for 2008 in the golf industry’s prestigious annual IAGTO Awards – to a new dimension for quality golf.

The following month saw the long-awaited opening of Belek’s first links course, the classical-styled LykiaLinksGolf layout by Perry Dye, and the Carya Golf Club course by Peter Thomson, of design firm Thomson, Perrett and Lobb. It echoes traditional British heathland courses.

Besides its world-class golf venues, Belek also offers a stunning array of luxury four and five-star resort hotels offering high standards of service and accommodation, many with extensive spa facilities in addition to other leisure activities such as water sports and tennis.

Opened in 2002 and constructed by European Golf Design alongside Irishman David Jones, a consultant designer, the Pasha course is immacu-

lately manicured with four par-fives, undulating Bermuda greens and plenty of eucalyptus and pine trees lining the fairways. A must-play course, accuracy is the key thanks to its numerous doglegs and water hazards.

The longer PGA Sultan course was also constructed by European Golf Design with David Jones. It is regarded as a more chal-lenging course than the Pasha and has firmly established itself as a big favourite with golfers visiting Belek. Despite only opening in 2003, it has already hosted a number of professional tournaments, testing talented players with its combination of water hazards, sand traps, rolling fairways and very tall, established pine trees. The Gloria Old Course was consid-ered to be a Michel Gayon classic when it was launched in 1997, to coincide with the opening of the Gloria Golf Resort. This 18 hole

championship course has seven lakes, deep bunkers and is 6,760 yards long and par 72.

The Gloria New Course is a tree lined, parkland style 18 hole championship course with a hint of seaside, thanks to its undulations. It measures 6,890 yards, has a par 72 with four lakes. The new Clubhouse was especially designed for the Gloria Golf Resort, with restaurant, bar, golfers’ lounge and large pro-shop and locker room. The fully stocked pro shop has PGA Professionals on site. The driving range has two floors with 48 bays plus 30 bays with grass tees. The Kaya Belek hotel and its golf course the Kaya-Eagle make for one of the best value all inclusive holidays in Belek. The Carya Golf course designed by Thomson, Perrett & Lobb has taken its inspiration from classic heathland courses in the UK such as The Berkshire, Walton Heath and Sunningdale. The Heather theme is mostly a cosmetic feature to the course, with characteristic white sand bunkers and water hazards providing the main challenges. The front 9 holes prepare you well for a more testing back 9 so there is a logical progression of difficulty in its design that some courses dont have. The course provides a test

of golf suited to golfers of all levels and its freedom from any particular hotel and its great green fee price make it a great choice for any hotel package. There are wonderful signature holes such as the par three 7th with many deep bunkers, and heather all around the approach, the par 5 6th hole which is over 630 yards from the pro tees! Also the 14th, 15th & 16th which all provide all sorts of tricky shots around the beautiful but punsihing water hazards. It is recommended to have this course in every package.
