PART A: READING (15 MARKS)Read the text below and answer all the questions in the answer booklet.

I Coco nuts are the fruit of the coconut palm. The botanical name of the coconutpalm is cocos nucifera with 'nucifera' meaning 'nut-bearing'. The coconut's nameis a bit of a misnom er since the fruit is classified as a drupe and not a nut. Adrup e is a fleshy fruit wh ich usually has a single hard stone enclosing a see d.Exam ples of drupes are peaches, plums and cherries. In fact, the coconut has 5the largest seed know n. The English name 'coconut' com es from the Spanishand Portuguese word 'coco' which means 'monkey face'. Spanish andPortuguese explorers had found a resemblance to a monkey's face in the threeround indented markings or 'eyes' at the base of the coconu t shell.

II Th e fruit-bearing coconut palms are native to Ma laysia, Polynesia and southern 1 0Asia. Now, they also grow successfully in South America, India, the PacificIslands, Hawaii and Florida. The light, fibrous husk has allowed the coconut toeasily drift on the oceans and propagate in these lands miles away from theiroriginal hom es.

III In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is known as kalpa vriksha , meaning 'tree that gives 15all that is necessary for living' since nearly all parts of the tree ca n be used in oneway or another. The coconut itself has many uses as food. Its meat, milk, sugarand oil are much valued food items and the shell itself can be used as a cup andto serve all the food elements which it contains! The husk is burned for fuel andtoda y, a fibre called coir which is extracted from the husk is used to make 20brushe s, mats, fishnets and rope. Furthermore, from the coconut palm's sap, astrong fermented drink called toddy is made. Coconut oil, a saturated fat madefrom dried coconut meat, is used for commercial frying and in candies andmargarine as well as in non-food products such as soaps a nd cosm etics. In the Nicobar Islands of the Indian Oc ean, wh ole coconuts were once used as 25currency for the purchase of goods until the ea rlier p art of the twentieth ce ntury.

IV Mos t of us love the slightly cloudy yet almost clear, fresh coconut water. Coconutwater has been found to be a natural isotonic drink with the same level ofelectrolytic balance as we have in our blood. Furthermo re, in comp arisons mad ebetween 1 00 ml samples of coconut wa ter and man ufactured isotonic drinks, it 30wa s shown that coconut water contains about 294 mg of potassium while mostsports drinks and energy drinks have about 117 mg of the element. Moreimportantly, coconut water has less sodium (25 mg) than sports and energydrinks (200 mg). Coconut water has 5mg of natural sugars wh ereas sportsdrinks and energy drinks contain 1 0-25 mg of altered sugar. Chloride content is 35also much higher in coconut water (1 1 8 mg) com pared to the amount of chloridein sports drinks (39m g).

V To realize the health benefits of coconut water, one must relate its constituentminerals with how these m inerals are relevant to the b ody's he alth. A diet low inpotassium and high in sodium may be one of the factors which leads to high 40blood pressure. Athletes involved in hard exercise may require higher quantitiesof potassium than normal. In the case of sodium, a high sodium intake may leadto hypertension. A reduction in sodium helps lower blood pressure in all peoplewith hypertension. Chloride in the diet works with sodium and potassium tocontrol the flow of fluid in blood vessels and tissues. Chloride also regulates the 45acidity in the body and also forms part of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Whilehealth authorities feel that sugar intake should be kept to a minimum due tohealth issues, they prefer people to consume natural sugars rather than sugarsaltered or modified chemically or genetically. In many ways, then, coconut waterproves to be a better isotonic drink than its man ufactured counterparts. 50

VI Coco nut wa ter is even considered to be the 'fluid of life'. Malaysians who oftenbuy their fresh cocon ut water from roadside stalls might laugh at this claim asan exaggeration: but how many of them know that during the Pacific War of1941-1945, both sides (the Japanese and the Allied troops) regularly used

VII One other widely-use d product of the coconut fruit is coconut oil. It has receivedmu ch bad publicity for encouraging cholesterol build-up in the arteries wh en it is 60used for cooking. Th us, many people today avoid using it in their cooking. However, recent research has found that coconut oil does provide medicalbenefits. It is being praised by the medical research community as an effectiveantiviral, antibacterial and antifungal agent and is widely used to treat manyforms of viral infections and skin problems caused by bacteria and fungu s. VIII The coconut pa lm and the coconut itself are truly suprem e gifts of nature. It isamazing that such a humble plant w h ic h grows easily even in poor soil can beso beneficial to humans.
