TheTanzaniaTeamhasanothersuccessfulprojectunderitsbelt!AteamofengineerstraveledtoLashaineVillageinJunetooverseetheinstallationofasolarenergysystemandexpansionoftherainwaterharvestingsystematOrkeeswa Secondary School, built and operated by IEFT (www.ieftz.org).Team members were warmly welcomed by the students and staff andamazedathowmuchOrkeeswahaschanged!
Throughagenerous$12,000grantfromBoeing,EWBworkedwithChlorideExide, Ltd., a regional supplier of solar energy systems, to expand Or
keeswas solar system,donated by ChlorideExide in 2009. The existing 160watt systemwas relocated from theclassrooms to an oncampus building thatwill temporarily serveasadormitoryforgirls,untilafullscaledormisbuilt in the future.Despite some thisisAfricadelays,anew1kilowatt solar energysystem, designed andfunded by EWB, wassuccessfully installed! Itwill power classrooms,
staffoffices,anewlyconstructedsciencelabandfuturecomputerlabandlibrary.OrkeeswanowhasasufficientenergysupplytopoweraclasssizecomputerlabandIEFTisreadytoraisefundsforthepurchaseof35energy

students.ThePortlandProfessionalschapterisworkingonprojectsinEcuador,Haiti,Tanzania,andPortland.

I hope all of you havehad rewarding, enrichingandenjoyablesummers! While somehave been busy withourKickball fundraiser,or our active projectsinHaitiandTanzania, Iwelcomeourreturning members and newcomerstoEWBPortland.
In June we fielded project trips toboth Haiti and Tanzania installing awater chlorination system, 60,000 l.waterstoragetank,anda1,080wattsolar photovoltaic system. Also thissummer our Ecuador project teamhad two members journey there toidentifypossiblenewprojectsinthatcountry.
Allof theseprojectsof course couldnottakeplacewithoutthesupportofmany sponsors and individuals. InAugust,ourKickballWithoutBorderstournamentwasahugesuccess,raising over $11,500! Thank you to allthevolunteers,playersand sponsorsforyourtime,effort,positiveattitudeand donations that made this happen!
I look forward to another successfulyearof improvingthe livesofothers,sharing with new friends here andabroad, and all the rewards thatcome with enriching the lives wetouch!

efficient computers. The amazingOrkeeswa students are anxious andexcitedtobeginusingcomputersonan everyday basis. Computer skillswill have a tremendous impact onthesechildrenslives.Bylearningtouse computers, the students of Orkeeswa will have a huge advantageover students fromother secondaryschools, saysMatt Barbian, electrical lead for the project. The realbenefit will be realized years fromnowwhenthesestudentsapplyforcollege.Havingbeenthereforathirdtime,itwaswonderfultoseethemagain;theirhospitalityisalwaysbreathtaking.
The60,000literrainwaterharvestingsystem,constructedbyEWBin2009,wasexpandedwiththeadditionofasecond60,000literferrocementtanktostorerainwatercollectedfromtheroofsoftwonewbuildingsontheOrkeeswacampus.
Themostamazingpartofthetripwasdrivingaroundthevillages,meetingthestudentsfamiliesandseeingtheirhomelife,saysAda,oneofthetravelteammembers.Asengineers,weofcourseenjoyedseeingourdesignsimplemented,butthehospitalityandwarmsmilesofOrkeeswastudents,theirfamiliesandtheliterallyhundredsofvillagechildrenthatseemtospilloutofthebushwhereverweshowupisunforgettableandrewardedthecountlesshoursofdesignwork,reportwritingandfundraisingthatmadethisprojectpossible.ThankyouLashaine!Itwasgreattoseehowallofoureffortsoverthepastyearhavecometofruition,saysBradOstapkowiczanothertravelteammember.YougainalotofperspectivewhenyouareindirectcontactwiththestudentswhotheEWBprojectsarehelping.Italsogivesusincentivetokeepworkingthroughthenextcomingyearknow
ingthestudentswillbeprogressingintheirstudies,inpart,duetothesustainablesourcesofwaterandelectricity.Thankstoallthestudents,staff,andfamilieswhowereextremelyfriendlyandwelcoming!TeammembersalsodiscussedpotentialfutureprojectswithIEFTstaffandthevillagewomensgroup.Theresmuchworktobedone!

PleasewelcomeSteveAdams,ournewChapterPresidentandmemberspotlight!StevehasbeenanactivememberofEWBPortlandfor5years.JoiningtheEWBPortlandProfessionalschapterin2005,andin2006Stevetookonthepositionofchaptertreasurer.In2007hebecameakeyplannerforthe2007WestCoastRegionalWorkshopheldhereinPortlandathisalmamaterPortlandStateUniversity.AfterbeingChapterTreasurerfortwoyears,hewaselectedasPresidentElectandtransitionedintohisroleasChapterPresidentthislastJune.
Inhisdayjob,SteveistheDeputyCityEngineerfortheCityofWilsonville,andworkstooverseebothprivatedevelopmentandcapitalprojectsfortheCity.OutsideofworkandEWBSteve,hiswifeEve,andtwoadultchildrenareoutdoorenthusiasts.Stevehasbeenknowntodomultidaybiketrips,backpackingtrips,andlovestospendtimeoutonthewater.Ifyoureluckyenoughtogettoknowhim,youllbeinvitedonaraftingtrip!

ThispastJuneateamofsixEWBPortlandprofessionalstraveledtoLesAnglaisfortheirthirdfieldtripsincetheprogrambegan.TravelhadbeenpostponedfromFebruaryduetothe7.0earthquakeinPortauPrinceandwasrescheduledafterourpartnersinPortauPrincewerecomfortablesupportingourtrip.
InLesAnglais,theteamsuccessfullyinstalledapassivelycontrolledchlorinetabletfeederandsteelenclosuretotreatpartofthecommunitywatersystem.Theytrainedsixlocalvolunteersasoperators.Sanitationworkshopswereheldwithavarietyofstakeholdergroupstogetcommunityinputonanewsanitationproject.AdditionallytheEWBprogramisintheprocessofdevelopingapartnershipwithanorganizationcalledIFCWorldBanktoprovidefinancialmanagementtrainingtothevariouswaterboardsinLesAnglais.IFCWorldBanksentarepresentativetoLesAnglaisfromSofitraining,theirHaitianpartnerorganization.MadameMichaelleFortuneconductedalargescopingmeetingwiththewaterboardsfromLesAnglaisandneighboringdistricts.UltimatelyEWBhopestoworkwithSofitrainingtocompletetrainingforcommunityleaderssotheyarebetterabletomanagetheirinfrastructureinthefuture.SpecialthankstoParsonsBrinckerhoffandBiampfortheirgenerousgrantsthatdirectlysupportedthiswork.

maintainthechlorinatorandtomonitorandadjustchlorineconcentrationsinthedrinkingwater.
