October Calendar 5
From the Desk of the Principal and Vice Principal:
September has flown by at Begley School! We are so pleased with the way the school is looking and the respect students are show-ing for following safety rules, keeping up with their school work and keeping our school looking great! Thanks to all of our parents for supporting this.
October is a time to give thanks. We will take time on the 9th of October to remain at home with friends and family as a reminder of all we are thankful for. Many educators will be involved in activities with our students sharing gratitude for all we have at Begley School. I know that we feel very blessed to be at such a beautiful school, with wonderful educators.
Our focus for October is Responsibility. Help-ing to ensure our students come prepared for school with their agendas, backpacks, homework complete and a healthy lunch, ready to learn is a way to show responsibility. Educators will be focussing on this character trait, helping to build resiliency in our stu-dents.
The first school council meeting of the year was held on Friday, September 29th. There were 7 parents who wished to have their name stand to form our vot-ing group and from these members, the school council executive was elected. The executive consists of:
Elementary School Chair: Stephanie Walsh Elementary School Vice-Chair: Leslie Price Thanks to all of the parents who provide their input at our
meetings on behalf of all the students of Begley. As a reminder, the
meetings are open to all members of the school community and the
next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, at 9:00 a.m. in the
conference room. The meetings are a great way to make sure you
have a voice in and around the school.

Everyday Math Tips! Hello Parents/Guardians, Thank you for your continuous support with helping your child(ren) in learning Math. Please try the following Math tips at home to help your child(ren) engage in Math learning. These tips and strategies are from the Ministry of Education of Ontario (2016): 1. Use household items for counting practice. Practise adding and subtracting with objects
found around your house like spoons or pots and pans. When they've become good at these skills, move on to simple multiplication.
2. Play games together. Show them math can be fun and exciting. Play family games to add
excitement to math activities, like chess or checkers or games in the car such as math bingo or adding licence plate numbers. Lots of board games need math such as Junior Monopoly® or play card games such as Uno®.

Apple Seeds: October 2017
Here are some tips from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit to help
keep you and your family healthy:
Children learn and perform better at school when they eat a healthy
breakfast and lunch. Here are some tips for packing a healthy lunch:
-Change it up from sandwiches by using a wide mouth thermos to give them leftover of
chili, soup, pasta, or stew.
-Make small wraps with a protein, vegetables, and salad dressing, or make mini-pizzas on
an English muffin.
-Lunchables are not healthy. Make your own version with finger foods like crackers and
cheese, small pieces of fruit, and meat cut into small circles and squares.
-Instead of bread, use small pita pockets, dinner rolls, breadsticks, or round Melba toast.
The flu shot is safe and free! All children over six months of age should get a flu shot every
year. Flu outbreaks usually begin with children, who spread it to adults. Find out where to get
your flu shot at https://www.wechu.org/classes-and-clinics/clinics/flu-clinic
Children spend a lot of their day sitting – both in and outside of school. Physical activity
guidelines recommend that children should be active for one hour per day for health benefits.
This can be reached by doing smaller amounts of activity throughout the day, in bouts of at
least ten minutes or more. For example, children can play on the school’s playgrounds for 10
minutes when they arrive, another 30 minutes during breaks and lunch. Then the family can be
active for 20 minutes in the evening. This can include playing sports, playing at a park, riding a
bike, or going for a walk with the family dog. In just three easy “sessions”, your child can be
active for the day!
Family Math Problem - October 2017
To our Begley families! We are excited to explore and encourage ‘Everyday Math’ at Begley. Below are questions to read and solve with your child/ren. Answers can be written on a separate page and submitted in the Math box outside the office to be entered in our monthly draw!
Primary (Grades 1-3) Malik decided to collect donations for the city’s local food bank for Thanksgiving. He started by asking his family and friends. His grandma gave him 25 cans, his best friend Steven’s family gave him 16 cans, and his dad gave him 20 more. How many items does Malik have to donate so far? Show your work using numbers, pictures, or words.
Junior (Grades 4-6) Mrs. Johnson’s class organized a cookie sale to raise money for their field trip. They started their sale with 8 dozen cookies and sold them for $4.25 per half-dozen. How much money would their class have made so far if they sold all the cookies? Show your work using numbers, pictures, or words.
Intermediate (Grades 7 & 8) On Halloween Scarlett’s little sister collected three bags of candy with 75 pieces in each one. She asked Scarlett to help her divide all of the candy evenly among her and their 6 cousins. How many pieces of candy will each person get? Will there be any left over? Show your work using numbers, pictures, or words.
