Ride for the Band Success!Projected income for the 4th Annual Ride for the Band (RFTB) is in the ballpark of $4,300.00 coming from rider pledges, raffle ticket sales, silent auction income, and donations from sponsors, partners and donors. It is too bad, in my opinion, that we didn’t have more riders; only four riders this year but nonetheless a great event as a fundraiser for the band. Those four riders raised $925.00! There are lots of reasons to ride - one of which is to help the finances of the band; other reasons include, from my perspective

It is great exercise, good for your heart

It is therapeutic – relieves stress

It is exhilarating, AND you can ride for a great cause!

We are grateful to all of the businesses who supported the band with raffle ticket prizes – 38 in all. Congratulations to the winners as well as all of those who purchased raffle tickets. We sold 610 tickets for prizes worth a total of $2333.00. Celestino, a Santa Fe Bicycle Policeman did the drawing for each raffle prize; we presented him with a bracelet from the silent auction that was without a bid. There were nice bids on the other items and we sold 8 of the 25 items, including one bicycle. We have several bikes ready to sell (be sure to see page 5).

The Santa Fe Concert Band is now well into its 2016 season with four performances already and we will continue with another nine until our Holiday Concert in December. All of our concerts have free admission though donations are always welcome. We depend upon contrbutions from people like you. Thank you once again to all of our donors for your continued support.

Elsewhere in this issue you will read about the success of our 4th Annual Ride for the Band (RFTB) – a much needed fundraiser. The RFTB includes cyclists riding for the band and collecting pledges to support their ride (20, 50 or 100 miles), a silent auction, and a raffle. All of this depended upon support from businesses in Santa Fe, band members and their family, friends and support from the Santa Fe Century Committee especially their member Dave Nelson.

There were an estimated 1500 in attendance at the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The program included, for the first time in band history, a musical interlude from the band which was well received. James Sanders, Director of the Santa Fe National Cemetery plans to continue this addition to the ceremony in the future. The cemetery is impressive in many ways. There are over 50,000 burials on approximately 100 acres. In 2015 there were 1,717 burials equal to nearly five each day! Those who gave given their lives for our country truly deserve to be remembered and the band is honored to be part of the Memorial Day Ceremony each year. Paul

Congratulations to 2016 High School Graduates from St. Michael’s High School this year: band members Mark Heltman (trumpet), Senior Class President, and Elena Romero (flute) Salutatorian of the graduating class.

The band now has close to 60 more or less active members, some are here in the summer only, and there are a few subs who fill positions when needed on a last minute basis.

SFCB is composed of volunteers who play out of a love for music, a desire to play, and who enjoy the company of other folks with the same interests. Music stands and instruments volunteer along with their owners.

Bill Humphreys, a native of Columbus Grove, Ohio, was given piano lesson at a very young age and was more excited about makingmusic in third grade flutaphone class. By middle school he was in the percussion section and then on to snare drum and Sousaphone, after he learned to read and play bass clef.

He felt called to the ministry, so he attended Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, and the Princeton Theological Seminary. He was ordained a PCUSA Presbyterian minister. He served pastoral positions in the upper Midwest and was the chaplain at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin, before moving to Santa Fe in January 2016.

A nephew in Los Alamos told Bill about the Santa Fe Concert Band, and he showed up at rehearsal with only a mouthpiece. “Music teacher David VanBuren was quick and kind to provide the rest of the horn for a couple of months,” he says. Since then he has purchased his first tuba and is beginning to work some needed practice times into his schedule. Bill also plays the bass bell in the First Presbyterian church handbell choir. He was fortunate in the past to play tuba and Sousaphone with the Carroll University wind symphony for four concerts in Italy.

He continues his interest in pastoral ministry by performing weddings and funerals. Also he is employed part time as a catering assistant and occasional dish washer at St. John’s College.

Bill especially likes the direction, challenge and accomplish-ments of the SFCB, and the opportunity to meet other Santa Fe folks. “The concert schedule is impressive as we offer and provide music opportunities to the community.”

Biking some of the trails and ice skating, swimming and racquetball at the Chavez Center are some of his spare time pursuits.

The band is open to musicians of suitable abilities; there are no auditions. Instead, we suggest new members attend a rehearsal or two and judge their own ability relative to those of the current band members and, if necessary, consult with the band director about continuing with the band.

RehearsalsThe Band rehearses throughout the year every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, at the Salvation Army Hall, 525 W. Alameda. Brief breaks usually occur after the summer concert sea-son and after the Christmas Concert.

The Santa Fe Concert Band comprises dedicated volunteer musicians who provide free public entertainment throughout the year at a number of venues around the City of Santa Fe. Many of these performances have become an annual tradition, entwined with the Band’s own history within the City. Venues and PerformancesThe band performs free public concerts throughout the year, including Fiesta, national holidays, dedications, public ceremonies, and afternoon summer concerts on the shady lawn of Federal Park on the east side of the Federal Courthouse. The summer concert series includes each year a performance on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, a Midsummer Concert in July, and a Historic Concert in August. The band performs at City celebrations and National Holidays including Fourth of July Pancakes on the Plaza, Memorial Day - National Cemetery, Flag Day and Veterans Day – Bataan Memorial, a Holiday Concert in December at The Lensic and at Santa Fe Place Mall, Kingston Residence in the late summer, and the Plaza Bandstand on occasion.

History The Santa Fe Concert Band was

formally incorporated in 1983 under the directorship of Greg Heltman, who continues as director today. A graduate of Santa Fe High School, Greg holds a music

degree from the University of the Pacific. He taught in the Santa Fe Public Schools from 1989 through 1999. In 1984 Mr. Heltman founded the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra, and has been a trumpeter with it ever since. Since 1996 he has been the General Director of the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Inc. 

A 150+ Year Tradition It all began in 1865 when

Franciso Pérez a native of Chihuahua, Mexico returned to Santa Fe and formed La Banda de Santa Fe - the first civilian brass band in Santa Fe. Pérez first came to Santa Fe as the bugler with the Confederate forces under Gen. Henry H. Sibley while marching north through New Mexico Territory. The Confederates were succeeding as they proceeded north, occupied Albuquerque and then took Santa Fe without struggle. Events changed for the Confederates at the Battle of Glorieta on Friday, March 28, 1862 when Union Forces burned the Confederate supply wagons and killed their horses and mules. This all happened at Johnson’s Ranch in Cañoncito at Apache Canyon just southeast of Santa Fe.

Sibley was hoping to reach Fort Union on his campaign north but after the defeat in Glorieta, the Confederate troops retreated to Santa Fe and ultimately left New Mexico and returned to El Paso. Pérez returned to his home in Mexico but then came back to Santa Fe in 1865 with a half-dozen musicians which formed the nucleus of La Banda de Santa Fe and provided the legacy for the

Santa Fe Concert Band.
