Positive signs in the property marketn a changing world over the past year or so one important truth has remainedconstant: the Costa del Sol is still a highly coveted destination for both expatriatesand visitors. The reasons are many – including exceptional climate, first-rate

infrastructure and services, and convenient transport links – but a key conclusion can bedrawn. In spite of the current economic situation, the local homes and interiors industry islikely to be the first to sprout the green shoots of recovery that an increasing number ofmarket observers are referring to lately. People are still moving to and settling on theCoast and the rental market is starting to show signs of new-found buoyancy – and that iswelcome news. In fact, the mood is so positive that Bespoke Media, the Marbella-basedpublishing company that launched Society Living magazine in May, is also pleased thismonth to present the first issue of Beautiful Home.

Bespoke is committed to providing readers with a magazine, published bi-monthly, that– while offering news about latest style trends around the world – principally focuses on therenowned southern Spanish lifestyle. To that end, the cover for this launch issue was shot inMarbella by CJ Hadlow, featuring a splendidly Baroque chair and organza provided byHouse Interiors, jewellery by Stephen Webster and a corset by Agent Provocateur – allexquisitely modelled by Nicola McGeorge.

Also this issue, Trish Dynes explains how to invigorate our homes in white, revealsways of creating a superb garden area and gives an in-depth insight into house plantsfor health and beauty; while the main featured property is the magnificent AdmiraltyHouse – considered Gibraltar’s most prestigious property. Elsewhere, Linda MindelCarvell discovers some luxurious interior indulgences; and Nicola McGeorge, wearingher other journalistic hat, offers valuable tips from the experts.

We hope you find this new magazine – which is being distributed in prime outletsalong the Coast (including rooms in leading hotels) to ensure the best possibleexposure for advertisers – an interesting and informative read, and welcome yourcomments and suggestions. Contact us at: [email protected]

HOME COMFORTSMany modern homes now have an extra bedroomor basement area that generally just collects allthose household items you think you want andneed but never actually use. BOLD AND TRANQUILWith so many ideas about how to design and decorate your

bedroom, it can often seem a daunting task and inevitablymany people decide to stick to safe colours and design.

But why not be bold and take risks? More often than not, guests or friends who see the room will be jealous and

wonder why they didn’t think of it first. By using a differentdesign or shape of a bed and keeping the colours matched,

as well as only using two or three for the whole room, youwill be able to ensure that you create a haven of peace and

tranquillity. RWK have some great ideas for the perfectbedroom, with a round-shaped bed – modern and trendy –and three primary colours: silver, beige and bright blue. The

blue stands out well against the other two colours and, because it is not overpowering and can be matched with

cushions and other items, it looks striking rather than garish. www.rwkmarbella.com

When considering colours fordecorating our homes there is a whole palette ofcolours, shades and tones with which to play. And yet one of the most exciting decoratingexercises is to get back to the basics of interiordesign and strip away all colour in order to startwith a clean slate – and that means going backto white.

White, if used properly in a homedecorating palette, can create a peaceful andserene backdrop for any room, but don’t use itas a crutch just because you’re afraid of colour. It’s often assumed that white is a standard tonewhereas, in fact, white is a wide range of tonesand hues like any colour; you only have to lookat the selection of whites in your local DIY tosee there’s off-white, linen white, snow white,

chalk white, and that’s just for starters. In factone British-based paint company boasts 50shades of white.

Using a preponderance of white in your homeis a matter of balance and lifestyle. If you havefallen in love with a white room in a glossymagazine think really hard about who will usethe room before you try to copy it. Will everyonein your home love white and how soon will it bebefore your beautiful room is covered in scuffs, stains and mucky paw prints? However, if thechildren have all grown up and left your colourfulnest you can now celebrate with a white onwhite room that is just for you.

If you decide to go ahead be sure to planevery detail; it’s not just a matter of sloshing afew litres of brilliant white paint on the walls, sobefore you get your painting gear on, buy a fewtester pots of different whites and see how theylook in natural and artificial light. The preciseshade of white is dictated by the undertone. When decorating with fine antiques and richwood floors, opt for whites that are slightlyyellowed. This adds an authentic patina totraditional rooms since the white pigments usedprior to the 20th century had a tendency todarken and yellow with age.

In an ultra modern space such as an urbanloft or apartment, nothing defines the space likea crisp white. Brilliant whites often have a blueundertone which is stunning paired with gunmetal silver, icy blue and charcoal; or try addinga shot of black to a white scheme for a chic, edgy look. Romantic whites are grey-based andbring a dreamy, ethereal presence to walls, andwork well in both traditional and contemporaryinteriors. A grey white marries well with any grey-toned colour, as well as Wedgwood blue, sagegreen and a dusky rose.

White provides a blank canvas that you candress up or down according to your preference.

You will need to choose pieces of furniture thatare a slightly different shade of white or if youhave mismatched pieces of furniture just paintthem white. With a room that is heavily reliant onwhite, you can play with colour by tossing a fewcolourful cushions around; citrus orange orturquoise look stunning against a whitebackdrop. However, there are practicalconsiderations when furnishing with white soconsider buying sofas and chairs with removablecovers that can be machine-washed so yourroom will always stay crisp.

You can change your cushion covers andthrows in line with your mood or the seasons andwatch your white room change before your eyes. You can place a simple bowl full of water withgrey-green stones on a table and see how itstands out. Add texture wherever you can suchas grainy woods, tufted rugs, plush throws andwoven baskets to make the room snug andinviting. A white background is most often thebest way to show off any stunning work of art, whether it’s a painting, photographs, a sculptureor a piece of well-loved furniture.

Layering objects and textures creates depthand adds interest; piled up cushions andoverlapping picture frames, for example, softenstark tones. Wooden floors look wonderful withwhite. Window treatments should be cream orwhite and sheer to let in lots of light; light has amagical way of bouncing around a white roomand creating warmth.

If you do have a family and pets why notcreate a timeless white on white bedroom withgoose down duvets and pillows covered withbroderie anglais covers. Using white in abedroom can have surprising depth – useseveral shades of white to bring out thearchitectural details in your room and layer thespace with strong forms in different tones andtextures of white and then use some strongcontrasts to outline and bring the white intofocus. The quality of light will come through yourwhite curtains as the morning sun rises, making awonderful start to your day.

Colour saturates our world and affects ourphysical and mental well-being. An all-whiteinterior is not the absence of colour; it’s abackdrop against which colour is free to playand reflect, soothing our hearts and calmingour minds.

GIBRALTAR IS INCREASINGLY BECOMING THE COOL PLACE TO LIVE… A CHIC ANDCOSMOPOLITAN AREA CONVENIENTLY LOCATED CLOSE TO THE COSTA DEL SOL,WITH SOME STUNNING PROPERTIES THAT WOULD BE AT HOME IN THE MOST SELECTAND LUXURIOUS SETTINGS IN THE WORLD. Vice Admiral Horatio Nelsonwas the most famous inhabitant of AdmiraltyHouse in its previous incarnation as a hospital –though unfortunately for him he did not havemuch opportunity to enjoy the stunning setting.Nelson had been fatally injured in the Battle ofTrafalgar, and the HMS Victory was towed toGibraltar with his body preserved in a barrel ofbrandy before being returned to England for astate funeral.

From 1746 to 1922 the plot of themagnificent, newly built property featured herewas occupied by a hospital that tended to thesick and wounded from many epic historicalbattles, including the Crimean War and WorldWar I. The building then became home to naval

and army medical staff and their families, beingused as residential married quarters up to theearly 1980s.

With the reduction of the then militarypresence on Gibraltar, the British Ministry ofDefence transferred the site to the Gibraltargovernment, which tendered it for privateresidential development.

Then followed four years of meticulousdesign work with the dedicated objective ofcreating a stylish, contemporary home, using thelatest building techniques, with a periodcharacter that reflects the site’s heritage.

The result is a spectacular Georgian-stylehome of exceptional elegance and character: amarriage of stunning architectural design and

The Spanish Garden gardenand PatioSpain has one of the most important gardeninglegacies, with examples from the Roman age upto today which have affected many internationaltrends. Because many Spanish gardens arehidden behind garden walls layered with stuccoor screens of cypresses they are intenselypersonal affairs and reflect the personality andaesthetics of the gardener. But you canaccomplish enclosure in a modern plot in manyways. You can screen your garden with cypressesor the more colourful option of fences coveredwith fast- growing plants with spectacular flowerssuch as passion flowers, mandevillas, jasmineand plumbago. Favourite shrubs for yourSpanish garden are hibiscus, lantanas, oleandersand, angels´ trumpets.

Spanish patios are actually courtyards. Patioplanting is exuberant in its countless, colourfulceramic pots hanging on whitewashed walls andterracotta pots brimming over with geraniumsand a variety of plants, along with giant storagejars standing on cool tiles to add interest andtexture to the space. Fragrant plants areindispensable in a courtyard, as the still air trapsscent; these include climbing plants such asjasmine, night-scented annuals such as nicotianaand stocks. Potted palm trees and cordylines area legacy of Moorish times; however, many palmsare being attacked by palm weevils that are sofar indestructible.

Water is an important feature of Spanishgardens and in part due to a heavy Moorishinfluence that is embodied in many fountainsand various water features. Mossy rock- coveredpools are often found in more rustic gardens, but elaborate and decorative tile-work oftenfrequently enhances courtyard pools, basins andfountains and gives them a very distinctive look.

Water is animportant feature of

Spanish gardens

The Family GardenIt’s possible to design your garden so that itevolves with the changing needs of you and yourfamily. If you get the major areas right, you canalter garden features and planting as yourcircumstances change, or as time and moneybecome more available.

It’s essential to have some hard landscapingsuch as a paved terrace or decking, a placewhere family and friends can get together forlong Sunday lunches or summer barbecues. Ahardy lawn, real or artificial, is indispensible for

lazing away sunny days with a book and an icecold drink under the protection of a largeumbrella. A lawn is also essential for children orfamily pets to run about and have fun.

If you have space, a paved path circuit aroundyour garden is a great all-weather track for trikesand bikes. Children love secret places andclosely planted tall shrubs and bushes provideareas where they can make dens. A hot tubunder a gazebo is the ultimate in fun andrelaxation for the whole family and some

companies can provide corner tubs that don’ttake up much room.

The Terrace GardenNot only is a terrace the perfect extension toyour Spanish home but it can also be awonderful setting for a wide variety ofcontainer plants, such as alpines, bulbs, fruit, herbs, roses, shrubs and small trees includingcitrus trees. You can also plant climbers andtrailing plants to spill over the edge and soften

the severe effect of hard landscaping. You canenhance railings and handrails on steps bygrowing climbers, or by strategically placingpots and containers spilling over with bloomssuch as petunias and busy lizzies.

For privacy and beauty, a trellis or screencovered in vines or climbers will also protect youfrom the wind. You can include an arbour orpergola to provide a framework to supportcolourful bougainvillea, fragrant honeysuckle, clematis and roses.

The Cottage Garden Originally, cottage gardens were small areascrammed with fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowersand shrubs and even a beehive. The essence ofa cottage garden is a riot of colours and plantsthat intermingle in what seems an uncontrolledfashion. The traditional plants for sweepingherbaceous borders rampant with colour arehollyhocks, delphiniums and lupins as well asold-fashioned hardy annuals like forget-me-notsand love-in-a-mist that grow beneath apple treesand shrubs.

Many of these perennials and annuals are notavailable in Spain; however, the advantage ofplanting native perennials and shrubs ensuresglorious colour all year round, but if you have thetime and the patience to grow your own you canbuy seeds through the internet. Suttons have arange of Cottage Garden flower seeds puttogether by one of Britain’s favourite gardeners,Alan Titchmarsh.

A cottage garden is also the perfect place tohave a wildlife corner to attract birds andbutterflies and to grow some of the wonderfulwildflowers of Spain. Find a corner if you can fordelicious home- grown fruit and veg such assimple to grow strawberries; peppers;courgettes; tomatoes; and lettuce.

The Contemporary GardenThe term “contemporary style” is difficult todefine, but is a useful term for drawing togetherthe many different strands in garden design fromthe Bauhaus in the 1920s to the present day. However, the contemporary garden style is notto everyone’s taste, and the minimalist approachin particular will not appeal to those who enjoygrowing a wide and varied range of plants.

Use plants with strong shapes and textures;grasses are great for this unfussy style that ismuch loved by owners of modern homes orthose with roof gardens. The best contemporarygardens reflect the lifestyles of their owners andcapture the mood of society at a particular time.

The Japanese GardenIn Japanese culture, creating a garden is a highart linked to the arts of calligraphy and inkpainting. A Japanese garden is a formal area oftranquillity that uses plants sparingly and simplehard landscaping, usually decorative stone androckery. Water is a dominant feature and is oftena randomly shaped stream bordered by rocks ofdifferent sizes, mimicking nature. Grasses cangrow through the gravel as if self- seeded. Youcan create a Zen garden in the smallest ofspaces by raking decorative stone in symbolicpatterns, and position large rockery stones torepresent the natural landscape.

The Poolside GardenYour pool will be even more inviting if yousurround it with the right plants. Create alandscape that frames your pool and makes itthe focal point of your garden. Choose plantswith the minimum of litter; the idea of having

plants is to make the area more inviting, notincrease maintenance, so for colour try Zinnia, which hold their petals and leaves for a longperiod, and croton, a houseplant in coolerclimes, with its yellow, bronze and green leavesthat love plenty of light. Cacti and succulentsthrive in the light and many have beautifulblooms;, however, plant them well away from thepath to prevent injury or damage to inflatables.

This luxury Andalucian villa, regallysituated on top of a hill near Estepona, wasbought as a shell in 1997 by a well-known Irishpersonality on the Costa del Sol. From humblebeginnings, it has benefitted from years of loveand attention.

A huge four-bedroom house surrounded bysun and outstanding vistas, it also has a naturepark on its doorstep. It would be a shame not tomake the most of these natural resources, andthe owner has certainly not been guilty of that:hints of wildlife patterns can be detectedthroughout the house; and, to make the most ofthe sunlight and views, floor-to-ceiling windowsoffer a panoramic view over the Mediterraneansea and mountains – and, on a clear day,Gibraltar and northern Africa.

Light is a very important aspect to the house, teeming in through every strategically placedwindow and ensuring natural sunlight indoorsthroughout the day. In the evening, adjustablelights give the reds, oranges and yellows that runthroughout the home a warm and cosy glow.

It truly is an aesthetic delight, with nearlyevery wall adorning beautiful paintings that areeclectic in style and theme. The decorationcould best be described as rustic, with naturalmaterials such as stone and wood taking centrestage. Other attractive touches include a stonefireplace in the main family living room, with tworailway sleepers above it serving as a ledge.Near the main living room there is a smaller,

more intimate lounge area for less formal evenings in frontof the television. The three-floored house has split levels, adding yet another interesting dimension.

There are also some surprises! The master bathroom islavishly designed in gold and marble with a statue to boot –a fun room where you could totally self-indulge in a hotsoapy bath and feel like Caesar. Another room that offerssomething unexpected is the modern cinema room, whichcan also be converted into a function room with seating forup to 40 people.

Outside, a beautifully set up terrace leads out to theswimming pool; and, when you look beyond, all you see isthe glistening Mediterranean sea. Around the front of thehouse, the driveway accommodates 10 cars quitecomfortably; and at the side is a huge garage which couldalso be converted into separate accommodation.

Research into the beneficial attributesof plants was first conducted by NASA in the1970s. NASA scientists discovered that houseplants were able to purify polluted air and water.Since then many countries and authorities havedeveloped their own research programmes. InGermany a research programme, funded by theBavarian state, was started in January 1998, whichstudied the effect plants have on people who

spend a lot of time indoors. In 1994 CSIRO, theCommonwealth Scientific and Industrial ResearchOrganisation, Australia’s national science agencyand one of the largest and most diverse researchagencies in the world, found that the indoorenvironment may be five to seven times morepolluted than the exterior.

It seems that the result of all this researchis that plants are the best natural air filter

DURING THE LAST TWO MLLION YEARS PEOPLE EVOLVED IN OPENSPACES, SETTLING AROUND CLUSTERS OF VEGETATION. of natural light and you place your plants awayfrom radiators and draughts. While most houseplants are tolerant of quite a wide range ofconditions many will not tolerate too muchdirect sunlight; nevertheless, some plants suchas Beaucarnea (ponytail palm), Yucca and Annas(pineapple) will thrive in a sunny spot. Goodplants for darker corners are Philodendron,Blechnum (hard fern) and Epipremnum (devil’sivy) but there are many more.

Think of the plants as an integral part of yourliving space and decorate the whole room withplants. Many house plants look fabulous when anumber of the same variety of plant is groupedgeometrically in the same container; this isparticularly effective in contemporary designs. Some plants look stunning when one or two areplaced singly along a plain wall; chose anarchitectural species such as Dracaena or a bigblousy plant such as Alocasia Portadora – ahybrid with bright green ruffled leaves andgraceful stems that can grow to over two metreshigh. Some house plants, like garden plants, canlook stunning when arranged in mixed groupsbut consider how the colour, size and form of theplants complement each other.

While you are happy that your plants will carefor you remember to care for them. Lack ofhumidity is a problem when our homes areclosed up. Without moisture in the air the leavesbegin to dry, and as they do, the tips turn brown.Soon the margins of the leaves will turn brownand eventually the lower leaves will becomeyellow and fall. No amount of extra watering willcorrect the problem of low humidity. Moisturemeters can be an effective tool in determining

there is. The spider plant, the original ‘60shouse plant, is perfect as a desktop plant ifyou are one of the thousands who spend longhours at the computer each day. Other topplants are the Peace Lily, English Ivy, Ficus andPhilodendron, which all work during the dayto keep pollutants out of the air. For nighttime the newly fashionable Sansavieria(mother-in-law’s tongue) will breathe in carbondioxide and give off oxygen to refresh the airas we sleep. To get the benefit from thesenatural filters you will need at least one largehouse plant for every 10 square metres ofliving space.

Foliage plants not only have a smallerenvironmental footprint than manufacturedproducts, but will also produce the additionalbenefit of removing harmful chemicals such asformaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene andammonia from the air, chemicals found in paints, varnishes and some carpets and furniture. Theyalso absorb noise and minimise dust in thehome. Plants lower blood pressure, helpconcentration and improve memory, as well asreducing feelings of anxiety, anger and sadness.

House plants not only improve our health andwellbeing: they also transform any room in thehome. The choice of plant is obviously a matterof personal choice but generally there are someplants that complement a contemporary schemeand some that suit traditional styles better. Mostinterior plants, particularly palms, look good inalmost any setting.

The environment in which you place yourplants can be important, but there is a plant forany location provided there is at least a glimmer

Page 48: Beautiful Home Magazine Issue 001

when your plants need water; just make sure youpush the probe down towards the bottom of thepot. One way to provide humidity for your plantsis to set your plants on oversized saucers filledwith fine gravel; the gravel will also prevent theplant from sitting in the water. Grouping plantstogether indoors also helps to keep thesurrounding air moist; while spraying your plantswith a fine mist of water helps to stop them fromdrying out.

Leaves that wilt and curl then become brownand dry are a sure sign of not enough water. Feedyour plant with fertiliser in its growing period toboost its minerals – usually six to eight weeks afterpurchase or re-potting. Potting on to a larger potin a plant’s growing period is necessary for plantssuch as ferns. Don’t pot on when the plant isresting as no new roots will grow. Re-potting aplant usually occurs in spring to add fresh pottingmixture, but is not necessary for all plants. Monitoryour plants for pests and disease and treat themimmediately if you spot any problems.

Some plants are sensitive to the fluoride andchlorine in tap water. Spider plants andSpathiphyllum (peace lilies) are most commonlyaffected by fluoride, developing brown leaf tipsas a result. Excess salts from fertiliser and watercan also cause leaf tips to brown. Occasionally, accumulated salts need to be leached out of thesoil. To do this, apply large amounts of waterrepeatedly, to dissolve the salts and wash themout the bottom of the pot.

Plants growing outdoors are washed regularlyby rain and feather dusted by the wind. But it’sup to us to clean indoor plants, especially the

hard-working ones – the ones that clean our air.Dust, grease, oil and other airborne particlessettle on leaves, making them unattractive anddull-looking. Leaves that are dirty can’t absorb asmuch sunlight as clean ones.

Feng shui (pronounced fung’ shwa’) is theChinese art of positioning objects based onthe principle that arrangement affects thebalance of yin and yang and the flow of chiwithin an area, which can have positive ornegative effects, including effects on health.Whether you believe in feng shui or think it’stoo fanciful to be true the fact is that forcenturies the Chinese have successfully usedhouse plants to create living energy in theirhomes and workplaces.

So why not suspend your disbelief for awhile and, as you water your house plant, visualise the plant as strong and healthy andwith every drop of water you see it becomesmore vibrant. Give a purpose to your houseplant. For example, make it responsible forbringing wealth and abundance into yourhome. As you water the plant, visualise eachflower or plant leaf as a €500 note. For thewealth to grow you must care for it so it willgrow into a vibrant and healthy plant. Nameyour house plants and as you personalisethem you are more likely to give them moretender loving care. If a child names a plantwatch them say hello to it as they pass by. Asyou watch your plant grow you watch your selfesteem grow, and with each new leaf yourelease your old negative thought patternsand replace them with positive ones.

n recent times, the use of our free time hasbeen changing. There is no longer the habitof going on long holidays away from home;instead we are having more and more short

breaks, and in the meantime savouring our freetime at home.

Homes are more and more comfortable, withluxuries such as a private cinema, gym, sauna orgourmet kitchen, and several other additionalcorners or areas – including fully-equippedhome offices.

What about the outdoor? This is alsochanging and receiving more and moreattention. Not only is the outdoor identified withthe garden and the pool area, which on theCosta del Sol are the most sought after

I comforts, but it is the patio area that is actuallygetting a new identity.

Interior designers are developing additionalskills in order to integrate the indoor style withthe outdoor, by focusing on the interaction ofspaces and considering the outdoor as a naturalextension of the indoor.

This way the outdoor starts replicating thecomfort and uses of the indoor. Outdoor livingroom, outdoor kitchen, outdoor dining area andoutdoor bar area, to name a few.

The wellness area of the indoor completes itsrange of activities in the outdoor: the usualoutdoor pool, sun lounge, jacuzzi/hot tub/showerarea, and usually a pool house with completetoilet and changing rooms for pool guests.

Metalco Home has interpreted fully this newtrend, and offers prime outdoor furniture with animpeccable design and the necessary all-weather-proof finish.

It includes a complete stainless steel kitchen, with its own barbecue, a self-standing cocktailbar and a wine tasting corner with its own winefridge. These are all brand new products that areextremely hard to find in the market.

The beautiful design of the outdoor furniture, which includes sun beds, dining tables, chairs andoutdoor showers, is the result of more than 25 yearsof experience in the outdoor urban furniturebusiness, with the sophisticated design of primeItalian and international designers such as Staubach& Kuckertz, Alfredo Tasca and Marco de Luca.

LOW-ENERGY LIGHTING IS BEING TOUTED AS THEPRODUCT OF THE FUTURE, BUT NICOLAS DONICI OFMICRONETICS INC LTD EXPLAINS TO NICOLA MCGEORGEWHY HE BELIEVES THE FUTURE IS ALREADY HERE

LED lighting is the buzzword of the moment ininterior design. Light-emitting diodes, or energy-saving lights to you and I, are growing inpopularity due to their use by famous architects. However, Nicolas Donici saw their potential longbefore this and decided to become part ofMicronetics Inc Ltd, a company which designsand manufactures high-power, high-brightnessLED lighting products uniquely marketed to thecommercial and industrial main lighting andauxiliary markets.

Though British, he has spent the majority ofhis life between Spain and Switzerland. “Myfamily were originally involved in the musicindustry,” he explains. “We supplied them to themusic industry and still to this day are thebiggest supplier of traditional electron valves.”

Eventually he wanted to find his own path andbegan looking for a different direction.“I wanted to find something that was notperishable, that I wouldn’t need a degree inspace science to understand, yet also had a longshelf life and that everybody needs. When itcomes down to it, LEDs are basically anotherelectronic component, aren’t they? Instead ofgiving off sound, they give off light. Therefore itwas simply a natural progression for us.”

The company now has offices in Switzerland,Bahrain, Qatar, Argentina and Panama, and newrepresentatives in Russia. “We went to Chinaand bought into a group of factories. Eachfactory has its own speciality. For instance, one isfor the emergency lightings, another is for day today lights, others for street lighting and the last

Page 62: Beautiful Home Magazine Issue 001

one is for pretty amazing radar sensor lighting. Infact, arriving next week from that particularfactory will be lighting for a new car showroom inSan Pedro. The building will be illuminated andchange colour.”

Nicolas has worked on many remarkableprojects. In 2005, after the earthquake inPakistan, they supplied the LED lights to assistthe helicopters in landing at night.

As LED’s are constantly evolving at anincredible rate, it means they are becomingmore accessible to the general public. Theyrepresent many advantages over traditional lightsources including lower energy consumption(saving between 80 and 95-plus per cent on yourlighting bill), longer lifetime (50,000-plus hours),improved robustness, smaller size and fasterswitching. The light is mostly cool, even duringoperation, which will save from having to use somuch air-conditioning. Finally, most lights andlamps come with a two-year unlimited hourswarranty. However, they are relatively moreexpensive than traditional light sources.

So, why did he decide to bring his companyto Spain? “The Spanish government said by2010 everyone will have to change to ecolighting. This means we have a captive audience:either you buy it or you won’t have any light,” helaughs. “It has been harder to convince theSpanish than say the Swiss. They are used to thewhole green movement. Electric cars are thenorm in Switzerland. However, Spain is changing. For example, Seville requested that allgovernment buildings and hotels reduce theirenergy consumption by 40 per cent.”

Here on the Coast, Micronetics have alreadyworked with Manolo Santana Racquets Club andwill soon be putting LEDs on the courts. OtherSpanish projects include a hotel in Valencia, afive-star hotel in Madrid and a couple of townhall buildings. “Soon we will set up an office inMarbella employing local staff. We will try tospend as much time as possible here but wecan’t neglect my other companies.

“Our overall mission is to provide the bestlighting solutions to meet all the requirements ofour valued customers. To bring long life spanand other benefits of LED lighting to generallighting applications, etc. It’s a win win situationfor our customers and partners. We want tomake a better world, a brighter future.Remember, LED lighting is the future and thefuture is now.”

business file

Let there be light

hat made you decide to get intothe lighting industry? It has been in the family for three

generations; it’s what I know. Both my mother’sside and my father’s were involved with lighting. That’s how they met.

Why did you choose Spain to launchKSR Lighting? We sold the business in the UK and, having afamily home here, I realised there was a gap inthe market. I saw the opportunity to providegood quality lighting at good prices to thewhole of southern Spain.

Was it difficult to set up the business here?I already had all the contacts for the products; Ijust had to find the right location. We ended upturning what was an empty shell at San Pedropolígono into our showroom. The only problemis that we are probably the only lighting storethat doesn’t have electricity at the moment. Weare running on temporary electricity.

What makes KSR different? We import directly from the manufacturers, sellingdirectly to the electrical trade and the generalpublic. By cutting out the middleman we can offerfantastic prices. We also keep our products in

stock; therefore nine times out of 10 you can walkout with your lighting there and then. We are acustomer-friendly service and offer next-daydelivery anywhere in southern Spain.

Most recent jobs in Spain? We just did all of Ocean Club with LED striplights. For Novelli’s (restaurant) we supplied allthe lighting for the outdoor area, restaurantand bar.

What is the importance of lightingwithin a home?Lighting creates the mood, the ambience, andsets the feeling within the home. If you arewanting to relax in your living room, just turndown the lights with your dimmer and you havea totally different setting.

Describe the lighting you have chosenfor your own home…I have just finished the outside. I used all LEDs tomake it more energy efficient. We put an LEDstrip on the roof of the gazebo to light it, whichlooks really funky. We also used some greenLEDs just to soften it and give it some colour. Then we have white and green highlighting theshrubs and palm trees, bringing out the colourof the plants.

Future trends?Definitely LEDs. As they get brighter andmore usable, as in dimmable (we havesamples coming) they will replace normallighting. They are small, cheap… LED is thefuture, watch this space!

Proudest moment?Oh, there have been a few. We lit the first everRolls-Royce Phantom up. There was Armani inHarrods, the O2 contract, all the outdoorlighting in Victoria and David Beckham’s place inEngland. We have also done some work toRoman Abramovich’s place and even sentproducts to the Queen’s Sandringham house.

What is next for KSRWe are already focussing on the MiddleEastern and Asian markets. I am not just goingto settle with Marbella; I plan to take on thewhole of Spain.

Q: I want to put spotlights in mybathroom, including over the bath. What should I use?Teresa, 38, Estepona

A: Over a bath or shower you mustuse a minimum of a IP65 down light. This is a weather-proof rating. If youhave an open fitting over a bath andsay, for example, your child is playingwith the shower and flicks it into thedown light, water could get in there, set a spark or even cause an electricshock. It needs to be a fitting that istotally sealed so there is no exposureto moisture and water.Matt Callander. KSR Lighting:Tel. 951 704 707;www.ksrlighting.com

Q: What is the highest temperaturesetting I can have my hot tub on? Tina, 50, Nueva Andalucía

A: The spas from Aquapool Spasall have a temperature range from27 to 42 degrees Celsius. Your spashould be especially designed togive you all the benefits of

their spa at around 39-40 degrees toget the most benefit. At thistemperature – which is two or threedegrees higher than bodytemperature – veins will dilate, leading to better blood circulation.

Muscle fatigue, stiffness and painis eased; your brain releasesendorphins, which are the body’snatural “feelgood” chemical; andyour whole body will feel relaxed.People who suffer from insomniaalso benefit greatly fromhydromassage before bedtime. Anja Mynster Keelson, Aqua Pool:Tel. 952 665 435; www.aquapool.es

Q: I want to put my plasma TV onthe chimney breast. I use myfireplace during the winter: will thisharm the plasma? Carmen, 52, Mijas

A: It is possible to put the plasmaabove the chimney. However, certainmeasures need to be made. You mustisolate the plasma and cables from the

heat of the fire; this may be done usingspecial thermal insulating material orheat-refracting bricks. In new builds, the flue is normally a metallic cylinder;this should be wrapped in the thermalisolating material then bricked upand plastered. Then the plasma maybe installed. Q: Do you need planningpermission for a gazebo? Sally, 45, Marbella

A: It all depends on what design ofgazebo you choose. In general youdo not need planning permissiondue to the fact that:1. It is classified as a removable

structure.2. It is not enclosed with walls or any

other concrete material.3. No windows, plumbing,

electricity or doors are installed,4. In our case, the materials we use

are natural.
