Dear CATS & DOGS:

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food.

Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your

food and dish. Nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object.

Tripping me doesn't help, because I fall faster than you can run

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king- sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on

the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to

sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out

and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to

get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge

and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom

for years - canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

Elsie the bed hog Beagle came from a home where the humans were prosecuted for neglect. It is apparent that in her many years, Elsie had numerous litters and little else. Even so, she maintained her positive attitude and loving spirit. We have found Elsie to make a well-behaved, gentle, easy house pet. During walks, she stays right with us and keeps her eyes on us. Elsie has had surgery to remove mammary nodules and nasty teeth. Her only negative is an obsession with cats. Not necessarily a desire to hurt them, but definitely get them slimy.

Not recommended for homes with cats who do not see themselves as gummy bears. Estimated b-day 1-9-98.

Elsie after lots of love

I received a wonderful email regarding Lizzy [the Beagle] after she appeared in our newsletter that I would love to

share with all of you:

You put my Lizzy in the newsletter!!! I am so proud of her and Sheila, they are amazing. I don't know if I told you the

story of Lizzy or not, but here it goes. I was going through a difficult time and felt the need for another dog. For

months I fostered dogs but never felt that this was THE one. Then came Lizzy, I fell in love with her at the shelter

and brought her home to foster with the intention of adopting, so I gave her the name I had picked out a few years

ago for my next dog, Elizabeth..

My friend Sheila fostered dogs whenever she wasn't traveling but she never had a dog herself. She loved her fosters

but they were never THE dog. For years we kept waiting for her and Tim to find THE

dog, but just never happened. Two weeks after I brought Elizabeth home

Sheila volunteered at BarkPark. Lizzy jumped in her lap and it was love at

first sight. She called Tim to come meet her thinking this was just another one

of my fosters. When Sheila and Tim told me they were head over heals in love

and wanted to adopt her, my heart sank, how could the only dog they have ever

wanted to keep be my Elizabeth? But after seeing them all together I did probably the most selfless thing I have

ever done and let her go with them. I was heartbroken but so happy for Sheila, Tim and Lizzy.

Two weeks later [Beagles rrrrrrr Us] brought up some of the crew to ... BarkPark. Included in the gang was Bob. You

know the rest Maybe there is a greater plan.

Marcia, BarkPark

After receiving the email from Marcia I felt it was only fair to get a story about the wonderful beagle

she ended up adopting from Beagles rrrrrrr Us.

“What can I tell you about Bob? He's ornery, hates Tucker and Bert, gets into everything, and is totally

untrainable. After almost two years I still can't get him completely housebroken. I've housebroken 8 year old

male coonhounds that have never seen the inside of a house and fostered over 100 dogs, none of which

left unhousebroken, but I can't manage this 18lb. beagle. He is horrible and we love him more than you can

imagine.

Bob came along when things weren't going well in my life. After Lizzy was adopted I was feeling a little down

and needed something, someone, to snap me out of it. Then a crew of adorable Beagles came to BarkPark. I

had met Bob at a few of the mingles but didn't pay attention to him. I know myself well enough to not interact

too much with hounds needing homes. But at BarkPark he was the most adorable dog I had ever

seen. The deformed legs, sway back and under bite made him look so helpless but when he ran and played with

the other dogs you would never know he had one thing wrong with him. I watched him all through BarkPark and

when Liz was getting ready to leave I asked if Bob could stay

I think it was almost a whole day before Lennie and I fell madly in love with this dog. He runs the house. He is

so spoiled that when I remodeled the house we did it around Bob's needs. A few months before we adopted

Bob our sweet Jessica passed away. She and Priscilla Perry, my white cocker/beagle mix were best friends

and Priscilla was very depressed. Then came Bob and Priscilla has a best friend again. They play, sleep to-

gether and you seldom see one without the other close by. Bob has a thing for female beagles. With Bob we

never have an empty lap and he is our hot water bottle in bed, sleeping under the covers curled up next to

you. Lennie and I actually fight over who gets to hold Bob when we are reading or watching TV. In our home I

have always been the caretaker for the dogs but on Lennie's bathroom sink next to his own toothbrush sits

Bob's toothpaste and brush, Lennie is the one who keeps Bob's teeth pearly white

With all of this said Liz messed up and Bob actually is in the wrong home. He could care less if he goes out-

side, we live on 27 acres. He loves children, ours are grown and gone. He hates large male dogs, we have two.

He doesn't like other dogs in his yard, we had BarkPark and a large circle of friends who visit regularly with

their dogs. Bob should really be the only dog living in an apartment with a family full of children. But Lennie

and I cannot imagine life without him, he has brought so much joy into this house. People think that rescuers

are such selfless people, but sometimes it's the dog rescuing us”.

Hi This is Smokey Peacenick. I AM the Beagle of wisdom. Each

month I will provide you with words of wisdom.

Against my better judgment I will give you the poop on two of

our favorite things—Anal glands and tapeworms.

Next Issue: Meet a couple of our visually impaired beagles

Carpet Scooters Anonymous

The existence of anal glands is adequately explained by neither Darwin nor Lamarck. Intelligent Design misses the target as does Murphy. Fortunately, they are easier to manage than explain.

Anal glands are found on all dogs, on either side of the private place. They can be felt by pressing gently at the 4- and 6-O-clock positions. The glands fill with an odiferous secretion which is then released by the me-chanical action of the dog passing stool. Nice plan, but it doesn’t work. Sometimes the glands plug up and become painful or infected and sometimes they release their contents at inopportune times. Doggie scooting is a sign of gland discomfort. Glands are serious business -- if an impacted gland is left untreated, it may become infected and rupture, which is life threatening.

Impacted glands can be expressed by gently pressing inward and upward by (gloved) hand. The material that comes out may be watery, cottage cheesy, muddy, clear, white or brown. Do not do not do not try to look too closely at what you are doing!! If you cannot open the gland without causing discomfort, it is time to go to the vet. This is a tender area and your vet will be more than happy to show you how to do this correctly. Two web sites provide diagrams, more information and an animated demo! These are veterinarian-written sites with a wealth of reliable information on many topics.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms have absolutely nothing to do with anal glands except that when fussing with the glands, you are in the correct place to notice the tapes. You may find a ½ inch long moving segment or you may find rice grain-like dried segments in the fur around the tail and rear legs. In spite of your first instinct, tapes are not an emergency. The same web sites explain the very interesting natural history of tapeworms. And treat-ment too!
