New structures in the post and telecommunication sector

The Ministère de la Communication et de la Culture, Niamey, announces that in connection with the restructuring of the post and telecommunication sector in the Niger, policy and regulatory functions have been separated from operational activities, and a new Post and Telecommunication Regulation Directorate (Direction de la Réglementation des Postes et Télécommunications – DRPT) has been set up in the Ministry responsible for posts and telecommunications in the Niger.

This Directorate will be responsible for national post and telecommunication regulation and policy, formulation of standards for system equipment and operation, coordination and circulation of information required for the planning and operation of post and telecommunication services and promotion of post and telecommunication development. It will also ensure due coordination of the activities of the different parties involved in the sector (regulators, politicians and public and private operators), encouraging their effective and efficient participation in the various meetings of subregional, regional and international organizations, and to this effect, requests that correspondence relating to meetings in the post and telecommunication sector should accordingly be addressed to it in future. Change of name of Swiss Telecom PTT enterprise to SWISSCOMSwiss Telecom PTT, Berne, announces that it is to become a company under private law, with a new

name: SWISSCOM.This new name will be used from 1 October 1997 for all relations with the company, whose status, in

accordance with the definitions in the instruments of the Union, is that of a recognized operating agency (ROA). From that date, the telephone and facsimile (fax) numbers of SWISSCOM in Berne will be modified. The first three digits of the local number (at present 338) will be replaced by 342.
